Has anyone realized that our entity name has no word “Sashiko” in it? Keiko’s project name is “Sashi.Co” and my company’s name is “Upcycle Stitches”. There are reasons behind it. We carefully choose the name without “Sashiko”, and it is our way to pay respect to Sashiko. I know it isn’t the best idea in “marketing strategy”. However, advertising ourselves as if we are “the (only) Sashiko” is against the Japanese aesthetic. ☆ From all of my 30+ years of experience in Sashiko, I came to a conclusion that “No one should(can) own Sashiko”. When I started sharing the Sashiko in English, I already knew the potential of my voice - I don’t know many Japanese-Native Sashiko artisans, with many years of experience, who do not need a translator to express their experience. A potential equal to a risk. I do NOT want anyone to consider our Sashiko is “the absolute (only) Sashiko”. We do not own Sashiko. There are numbers of great Japanese Sashiko artisans/teachers in Japan who do not wish to speak up. It is another form of Japanese aesthetic. ☆ I would rather be buried in the ground with the Sashiko if I had to go against the Japanese aesthetic. However, I learned that many people care for what we do & what I say. So, this is the in-between point. I know I can do better in terms of “marketing” and “making profit”. However, please understand that I am the Japanese after all. Patchworking (stitching swatches together) is not only for the “Artistic” purpose. In fact, the primary reason to patch the small swatches is to give them the second stage to be spotlighted. A small piece of (vintage) fabric can be just a waste by itself. However, by stitching together & doing Sashiko for strengthening the material, it can re-obtain the role as “cloth”. It looks beautiful - but the “artistry” is secondary. Bringing the fabric from a pile of trash to the most fashionable cloth is what we may be able to contribute to this society. It is beautiful not only because it is “artistic”, but fabric and we appreciate each other. Sashiko and Art. Especially since I think in Japanese in my brain, I am still indecisive if Sashiko is the Art. I am still learning, but there is one thing I can share. It is our hope to encourage people throughout our Sashiko.  ☆ If the definition of Art is “an expression of human creativity in visual form”, then our Sashiko can be part of the Art. However, for us, “Self‐Assertion (expressing our specific vision via creation)” is secondary. That’s another reason I do not consider myself as an activist. What we would like to do is Not to lead people. We would like to support them from behind.  ☆ By sharing out Sashiko, if we could encourage that we all have the ability to appreciate & care for others, then it is then our “mission completed”. Keiko wants “(old) fabrics” for the 2nd life. I want to protect those people like Keiko. After this crisis of pandemic is over, I would like you to come visit us and touch our stitching. Asanoha (麻の葉) pattern is my favorite. You may realize how much I stitch Sashiko with Asanoha patterns, and you may even wonder why I stitch so much Asanoha - not other patterns. There is a reason behind it as well.  ☆ Enjoying a variety of patterns is a great way to appreciate/celebrate Sashiko. When I have a specific design in my mind, I always wonder which pattern is the great idea to make it more beautiful & enjoyable. However, “the ordinary” is not always about the “result” - it is more about a process, and the process tends to be very repetitive and monotonous.  ☆ I would like to see if there is anything I can see after stitching the same pattern for more than thousands of hours. I don’t know, but that’s probably what the Japanese people did in the past. Stitching the same pattern (or the only lines) as a process of stitching. It is another reason I do not consider myself an Artist (yet). Many understand that we advocate the traditional Sashiko. In fact, it isn’t true. Keiko and I are quite off the “traditional” route. As much as I love the tradition of Sashiko, what I do (Sashiko Denim) and what Keiko does (combination of many colors & types of fabric) are NOT traditional. The Sashiko artisans in my family would not consider them “traditional”. ☆ Keiko’s iconic Jacket, Hitomezashi Jacket, is one example. This is a mixture of her interpretation of Sashiko in 40 years & her artisanship in tradition. Vintage Mud-dye Silk with Sashiko due to the weakness of vintage silk. Her natural dye Sashiko thread will alter its color with the fabric’s history. I can talk about this jacket hours and hours… If one thinks that they know Sashiko by reading a blog article, then it is so sad that they are missing many beautiful aspects of Sashiko. The Japanese rarely call themselves “a master”... A master is a title from someone - not a marketing tool from an artisan themselves. ☆ This 1-year-making Jacket often gets sold out immediately. Or, recent years, She makes one as a backorder. It was my dream to share this in the U.S… so I ordered & will be in the U.S. (when the logistics are better, to avoid lost packages). Sashiko is more than just stitching - it is a culture in a form of simple & mere stitching. (Please do not ask “What is traditional Sashiko, then?”. “Sharing the Sashiko” is my goal. In order to keep sharing, establishing the “Sustainable Sashiko” is very important. Not only the “Sashiko as Sustainable Fashion/Practice”, but also a “Sashiko as Sustainable Business” where we all can continue practicing with supporting suppliers & craftsmen in the industry. That’s the only place where money plays an important role. ☆ In the Edo period (more than 200 years ago, when Sashiko came on the surface of history), the Japanese merchants had established the philosophy of sustainable business. We call it - “Sanhou-Yoshi”, a business good for 3 directions (Seller, Buyer and Society). We are not only merchants but also the artisans. Therefore, I added 2 more directions - good for suppliers & artisans. In short, I would like to operate a business where everyone, including the people who lived in the past, will be happy doing so. It is my core principal in the Sashiko business that I do with my mother. Therefore, I keep saying, the art/freedom/innovation over someone’s pain is not what I would like to do. Sashiko is a hand-stitching practice to mend. If one needs an answer within a few minutes, then Sashiko isn’t for them. I try to care for as many people as possible, so everything slows down. However, it is okay. Only 5 days ago, this big piece of white fabric had no stitching. This week, I had a good amount of time to talk to Keiko & other friends in Japan - about Sashiko while stitching Sashiko. I believe it is one of the original scenery of Sashiko that we would see if we could time-travel, talking and stitching. The only difference today is that we share the same moment over the Internet. ☆ “What is so fun to stitch so much?” - a quite frequent question. It sounds crazy to have 1 million stitches by hand, but we would do. I am trying to verbalize the answer to “what is so fun?” but I cannot come up with it yet, not even in Japanese. My answer is always, “You would understand it when you learn how we stitch”. Speaking from the Sashiko stitcher’s point of view, there is no vivid boundary between Sashiko & Boro. They are on the same line of hand-stitching with care. It is not like “Sashiko or Boro''. It is like, “Sashiko and then Boro”. The exhibition of authentic Boro is opening this Friday at Japan Society in NYC. What I am trying to share is the process of creating such beautiful pieces - Sashiko. ☆ The photo is a “Boro-To-Be” piece by Keiko (Sold). When I was a child, the “tradition” was more strict. Some artisans wouldn’t consider what I do (Sashiko on the Denim) as the authentic Sashiko. Today, it is rare to hear their voice over the Internet. Not only are they old and polite, they only share their “voices” to those who physically visit them for their mastery. They are very kind to us who visit, but not kind enough to make a visit and share. It is rare, and therefore very precious. ☆ On Instagram, I met an eldery lady who shares her insight, “Sashiko Sampler (Hana-Fukin) is not the Sashko.” As you may know, many Japanese enjoy colorful & pictorial patterned Sashiko on the white cloth (dish-towel). She says she doesn’t like it, and they aren’t Sashiko. Many may disagree with her saying “many japanese already enjoy it as''Sashiko”. Her perception is wrong. Sashiko is merely a craft so it should be more free in interpretation.” Some may consider her as a haters, and she leaves negative comments. ☆ Is she wrong? I personally enjoy Sashiko Sampler. So, I am not standing on the same side with her. However, I feel the strong need to listen to her. It is easy to say “This is reality.” and ignore the haters/negative comments. However, is it the real voice that we unintentionally & already re-painted? In fact, the number of artisans who raised me was like her. The internet changed the way we communicate. We used to respect eldery much more - regardless if they are right or wrong, their wisdom was valuable. Here, the same thing. Many are looking for the knowledge of “how to”. However, the core of Sashiko can be passed down by learning wisdom. “BORO” is a result of repetitive Sashiko. Therefore, it contains the “hope/care” of ordinary People. In today’s Live Streaming, I talked about what Boro is for us, for Sashiko artisans. Boro is more than a result. Sashiko is more than technique. It is my goal to share something more than “material” or “result”. ☆ The photo is a Boro (to be) piece made by Keiko, and I keep using it and mending to make it more “Boro”. It can be a museum quality, but I would like to keep using it and encouraging people to feel/touch it when they see me. It is fantastic that people consider Boro as the Art. We all look at the world the way we want to see, listen to what we want to understand, and read things to validate our own ideas. I am the same, although my goal is to learn by being honest and humble. We live in a society of “freedom”. There is Nothing to restrict one’s creativity. Therefore, it is important for me to share the “raw voice” of people behind the words. It is the Live Streaming, writing on the Internet, and the Online/In-person Sashiko class. Listening to the silent voice in the history - especially if they are still available. In order to fully describe the culture of Sashiko, proper understanding of how Japanese culture has developed is essential. What is the proper understanding, then? Well, many people spend their whole life studying it, so it isn’t easy to describe on SNS in one post. Please keep learning, as I keep sharing while learning. ☆ There are, of course, reasons for my frustration toward the word “Freedom (of interpretation)”. It is crucial to understand the concept of “Mura (Village Community)”, which may be categorized as “collectivism”. In extreme terms, the freedom (as an individual) did not “exist” in the ordinary of Japanese peasant life. There are many other stories around this extreme, and I come to understand that “Sashiko” is one form of individualism in the extreme collectivism. However, someone’s saying, “It is free to interpret a word, and whatever is fine” is too shallow to accept. If they don’t use the word “Sashiko”, then I have no problem. When they use the word “Sashiko”, I hope they “try” to respect the culture behind the word. “I want to share the beauty of Sashiko. I just don’t want it to be so different from what it is”. In today’s live streaming, I phrased my feelings like this. It is my pleasure to see the Sashiko inspiring many others regardless of who they are. I believe, however, it is fair to try to share the original form of “it” instead of “free-interpretation”, since my life is(was) around it. ☆ The Japanese accept the “difference” quite well. We “contain” the difference and let it stay simultaneously. As I have been sharing on Patreon & Web, “Futon” you imagine is not the “Futon” in Japan. Same thing goes to Sushi, Matcha, and so on. The Japanese do not fight back so much because “They know they can keep the authenticity by themselves”. How about Sashiko? It was too ordinary for us to discontinue. Not all Japanese know what it is. Therefore, someone has to speak up - and it is me for now. “Matcha” is not the same as grounded Green tea… Futon is not a foldable sofa… Sashiko is not a name for the pattern. Doubt what is normal. Don’t trust what we know. ☆ This is the phrase I always tell myself. My justice can be completely wrong in another culture. Until 2013, my justice was everything to me. I pushed through my “Correct” no matter what others say. Once I made myself “justified”, then it was okay to do “whatever”. My wife changed me, and I am very thankful for it. ☆ We often feel that “It is not in my dictionary”. However, we have to understand that there may be another dictionary, and some dictionaries may say something different especially in another language, in another culture. Therefore, I carefully choose words, and try to write in English because I respect the country where I am living now. ☆ The same concept goes to a fabric mask and Sashiko. We all want to have the correct answer. However, the truth often is not as simple as asking “Alexa” for the population of Japan. Many people ask me what is “Correct” in Sashiko. Yes, I do have my own “Correct” in Sashiko, and I can tell you that. However, it is the same as pushing my dictionary to others. So, I share the stories. I encourage people to do Sashiko as we do. One day, they will find their own “Correct” in Sashiko. I have seen so many students (now, my friends) who found their own Sashiko. Once you find your own Sashiko, then the Sashiko “as a Japanese culture” will be passed down regardless of our voice. I am an ordinary Sashiko stitcher. I know many more great Sashiko stitchers, and I sincerely respect them (wish to be like them). Everything else besides Sashiko, I am quite “clumsy”. Keiko can do a lot of things in fabric-crafting, but we can be who we are thanks to many skilled friends & generous supporters. Therefore, I can speak up the power of “caring”. ☆ I know that the words are insufficient to describe. However, without words, we may lose something very important. As much as I would like to spend more time in stitching & creating, I commit myself to keep sharing my words. I have many other Sashiko friends who learned from me. There are many “skilled craftspeople in fabric (like tailor, patterner, seamstress and such)”. I do what I can do to keep this beauty from “Do whatever”. I often say, “please spend some time researching before asking a question.” There is a reason behind my saying. A “quick information” may tell you what it is - but “what it is” can be someone’s interpretation. A consideration in researching will bring you “wisdom” that creates your own understanding. Many people misunderstand me that I had a comprehensive education in Sashiko from my family background. No. No one had “taught” me Sashiko. I learned by “observing” it. This is how many Japanese craftsmanship has been passed down. Learning by observation is not efficient. Often, it causes a detour by misunderstanding. One may never reach the “core” after spending decades. It can take years of wasting time to fully get it. In this society where quick and instant gratification (IG) dominate the market, I need to balance what I do. Over the Internet, anyone can say anything without learning. One can be a Sashiko teacher by reading one article. Popularity defines what is genuine because the followers also ask for quickness & I.G.. A louder voice offering what the market demands may overwrite a genuine, silent voice. (Well, we may call it capitalism…). A culture may be repainted over this quick movement. And therefore, I established the workshop/Online Class with investing my life.  ☆ We are experiencing a big paradigm shift now. Don’t let others create you by “quick” answers. I am not offering the “quick Sashiko” because Sashiko's core exists in opposite. Read before ask. Stitch with your hands before wondering with your brain.
