                 he  realised,  almost  at  step  one,  that  only  a  handful  of  these  guys  were  remotely  pleasant  to  talk  to.  which  he  expected,  yes,  of  course  he  expected  that  ;  they’re  hardened  criminals  with  a  murdering  vice  against  his  very  own  in  the  department,  but  what  is  it,  really?  you  weigh  the  nicest  in  the  group,  a  man  a  lot  gruffer  than  his  marijuana  stash  probably  implied,  to      ────  WELL,  his  subconscious  will  be  honest  with  himself  here  ;  mr.  blond,  and  there  was  much  to  be  desired.  “ mr.  orange ”  doesn’t  like  being  left  alone  with  him,  but  he  feels  a  bit  of  an  obligation  to  be  friendly  (he  is  the  KID  of  the  group,  after  all  ;  over  sociable  and  always  laughing  nervously,  always  walking  and  looking  around  like  he's  half  high  but  of  course  he  isn't).  newandyke  leans  in  to  turn  the  radio  up.  paul  simon  strumming  away  in  instruction  of  fifty  ways  to  leave  your  lover  (just  slip  out  the  back,  jack!)  doesn’t  do  much  to  ease  the  tension,  though.

         clammy  hands  fold  over  his  knees,  head  hanging  languid  to  the  side  before  he’s  suddenly  jerking  up  into  the  spitting  image  of  perfect  military  posture.    in  that  same  respect  he  smiles,  doesn’t,  and  falls  back  into  the  car  door  again.  ❛ sure  are  takin’  their  time, ❜  he  comments  idly,  and  then  realises  that  he’d  really  like  something  to  fidget  with  right  about  now.  orange  presses  his  palm  to  his  forehead,  eyes  downcast  out  the  window.  ❛ you  have  a  lighter? ❜
