not interested in starting more of an argument with anyone here or you in particular but definitely think you should, like, actually read in-depth about marxism before trying to say what's "realistic" or not with such a huge platform in cdnpoli. i guarantee you and anyone else in the notes that the ideas you have about it are very ingrained holdovers from red scare-era and you should really learn properly about something before condemning it wholesale based on wildly inaccurate conceptions of it

is it ok if i ask what exactly you mean by meta-ethical moral relativist? the term sounds interesting and i think i kinda get what you mean but i don’t fully understand

oh yeah absolutely! i assume you’re mostly asking for clarification on the meta-ethical part because i feel like moral relativism is sort of self explanatory (the idea that morals are relative).

so: there are three main types of moral relativism

1. descriptive 2. meta-ethical 3. normative

they’re in order from tamest to wildest, i think at least. also, each idea is just building upon the previous one!

descriptive moral relativism is the idea that it is possible for people to have moral disagreements. which, to be honest, if you’re... not a descriptive relativist then. how? on earth? have you never argued with anyone? take a philosophy class for one day, dude. look at socrates’s wikipedia page. you will change your mind.

the only reason i can understand not being a descriptive relativist if you think that though you can have disagreements on surface level since there is Objective Morality it’s not “a true disagreement.” but that even has holes, because descriptive moral relativism is not saying that there isn’t a form of objective morality! it’s really just saying that you can tell someone “it’s morally wrong to throw out a book” and they can reply “what the fuck is wrong with you” even if you’re right. or if they’re right! because obviously you disagree, the disagreement goes both ways!

meta-ethical moral relativism, on the other hand, is the idea that you cannot say there is an objective morality because there are disagreements on what is moral and what is not. yes, there are things that are widely agreed to be wrong (murder, r//pe and assault, erica moen) but a lot of that is due to society and the current climate of.

am i saying that murder and r//pe and assault and erica moen AREN’T wrong? absolutely not, i think those are all absolutely horrible. but, the fact that there are people who don’t is... really interesting, especially since so many people agree on it. if you see a murder trial or any type of trial where the person is absolutely guilty of a heinous crime and they show no remorse, you’ll know what i mean better i think.

as a related tangent personally i don’t think Entirely Objective Morality can fully fit with empiricist beliefs, ie that you learn things by experience and they are not innate knowledge, but that’s just me. i’m sure there’s a good argument for why it can.

normative moral relativism, building on meta-ethical, is the idea that because there are disagreements, and no one in these disagreements can be objectively considered wrong, that we have to accept every single thing people do, due to the fact that it is morally right for them. that’s... no... sorry but no. i’m not a fan of normative relativism.

you’ll mostly see this in action around anti-sjws and meninists, so i’m sure you’ve seen it in action even if you didn’t realize it. “so what if i think all you bitches should die, it’s just my opinion!” “are you Triggered that i think you deserve to be physically harmed because of what you wear? all you tumblrina special snowflakes can’t handle other people’s opinions XD”

my best argument is: you believe murder is wrong, yea? so someone murders someone close to you. but you, Normative Relativist that you are, have one of two options: abandon your entire philosophy, or let them murder more people (close to you, acquaintances, strangers, you yourself) because well, it’s morally right For Them. how is the loss of a human life a forgivable offense even if it is morally right in their mind?

so: there you go! a crash course moral relativism from yours truly :’)

hey dude just lyk, referring to lgbt people as queer is frowned upon since its a slur (even if they use it for themselves its prob not a good idea to call others queer unless they explicitly say). also, poc isn't an adjective, so the proper way to write that would be 'lgbt people of colour' or 'lgbt poc', because 'poc lgbt people' reads as 'people of colour lgbt people' which is incorrect obviosuly. no hate or hard feelings! just reckoned i'd say
