Kyoko giving Byakuya her room key because the group doesn't trust her...Makoto being given the knife because the group trusts him...The whole fifth trial where Kyoko not having her room key and Makoto having the knife are core pieces of evidence, and it's Makoto's trust for Kyoko that decides which of them faces execution...

Kyoko not having her room key and therefore avoiding suspicion is a reward for being distrusted, and Makoto having the knife and therefore being placed under suspicion is a punishment for being trusted. Byakuya and Kyoko both having their relationships with trust challenged in the trial and the aftermath, while Makoto's relationship with trust is interrogated wholesale.

I've been thinking about the Future Foundation watching the events of Jabberwock Island lately.

This is specifically meant to be the first murder. I imagine no matter Byakuya's actual feelings on the imposter, seeing someone who looks like you get murdered is pretty jarring.

naegirigami shippers are so often afraid of kyoko and byakuya loving each other as they love makoto. is it because they cant fit into the conventional relationship dynamic that they can with makoto? is it because theyre so fixated on the idea of makoto being the glue that ties everyone together that they can't fathom that kyoko and byakuya can have a relationship that also stands up on its own? is it because one of them is really just a side bitch and there's only focus upon makoto and one other in the relationship? or do they really just ship makoto with both of them individually.

thinking about byakuya and kyouko and intimacy…they didn’t have loving parents around to give them that when they were young. they didn’t grow up like normal kids. they’re far from normal; they’re exceptional. they have had expectations set upon them since the day they were born. but now the world has ended and none of that means anything anymore and the only thing that’s left is the shattered remains of what was home and a boy who looks at you with those big eyes of his and is willing to give you anything, anything at all, and the only thing that he could ever even imagine expecting you to be is yourself. and what are you supposed to do with that?

Byakuya being the possessive type and Kyoko being the obsessive type. (About partners and friends.) So Byakuya will be the one absolutely grilling anyone Makoto plans to go anywhere with, or issuing snide put-downs to the people Kyoko works with. And Kyoko will be the one who can recognize a strand of Makoto's or Byakuya's hair, versus someone else's hair of ostensibly the same color, on sight, and noticing the differences in how each of them ties their shoes. (Edit: This also manifests in her needing to understand any minuscule change in their behavior.)

Both of them think the other is going way overboard but they themselves are definitely not.
