Hi Nay In London 🇬🇧
Got to meet up with some awesome people some of you might recognise, either from Hi Nay, or from podcasting in general!
Tumblr media
The lovely Helen Gould from Rusty Quill, who you might know from Enthusigasm, as well as other roles in other titles such as Magnus Archives and Stellar Firma.
We got along when I hosted Podbean's Storytelling Podcast Week and met up last year, and I just wanted to say hi while I was in town.
Tumblr media
The fantastic Chris, aka TheLonePonderer, a game Streamer and Youtuber who so kindly voiced our creepy yet tragic serial killer from the St. Patrick's Case episodes!
Tumblr media
And the wonderful Tom Pilcher (who's basically family) who voices our gentle voiced (yet black-hearted) Elder, the right hand man, Richard Henry. He's smiling because I told him what happens to his character in the near future😂
It was so nice seeing everyone, given how far flung the Hi Nay cast really is.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Rowan Atkinson, Paul Brindley (The Sundays), Max Bruch, Capucine, Sandy Denny, Kahlil Gibran, Mickey Hargitay, Michael Houser (Widespread Panic), Van McCoy, Tom Mix, Nek, Sandra Oh, Laudir de Oliveira, the 1963 New York theatrical opening of the musical OLIVER! w/Davy Jones, singer Chris Pilcher (good to sing with you), Giuseppe Sammartini, Carl Sandburg, Franz Xaver Scharwenka, Alexander Scriabin, Earl Scruggs, bassist Andy Seal (good to play with you), John Singleton, Kathy Sledge, John Smith, Charles Sumner, Ebo Taylor, Nino Tempo, Danny Thomas, Doris Troy, Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys), Kim Wilson, Paul Wilson (The Flamingos), Loretta Young, Malcolm Young, Yukana, and Syd Barrett, the famously troubled musician, guitar pioneer, singer-songwriter, and co-founder of Pink Floyd. Syd was a poster boy for 60s psychedelia—an influential and fascinating madcap who wrote most of PF’s early touchstones (“See Emily Play”). However, his real story is a shout-out for widespread mental illness in the music world. Meanwhile, in his short and stormy career, he set the tone for experimental and edgy pop music, inspiring David Bowie, Flaming Lips, Robyn Hitchcock, Paul McCartney, XTC, and many more. Here’s my take of “Remember a Day” from Floyd’s SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS album and one of the last songs Syd did with the band. Shine on you crazy diamond…

BBC Big Read List
Many years ago, I first started tallying the books from the BBC Big Read list, seeing how my reading and interests correllate. I don't take it as the "one truth" on which books are worth reading or "good", I just find it interesting which ones I agree with. Let's go!
Out of the BBC's "The Big Read" list from 2005, which ones did you read, plan to read or started to read, but didn't finish? Read: 57 Want to read: 60
Some of the books to read I know very little about except the title and that they're classics, some others I know a lot about (and I even have "Men at Arms" on my TBR pile for when the mood strikes me next). I like reading classics once in a while, but especially older ones I can't read too often, I need to be in the right mood for that style of writing.
The last time I updated this was in 2015 and I had read 44 and wanted to read 72 - so 15 books in 9 years xD Like I said, it's not a challenge or a goal to read all of them, just a convenient way of keeping track of which classics I want to read eventually.

March 2023: My Plans for the 1920s
Not that shockingly, I guess, I’m now realising I’m watching a lot more movies and shows than I’m reading books for this reading challenge. My main focus is definitely still on books, but, sadly, there are only so many books I have time to read in a month. On the other hand, I can fit a lot more films and TV shows into a month.
(You can read more about the Reading Through the Decades reading challenge on my post introducing the challenge. Basically, it’s a year-long reading challenge where we read books - and explore other media - from the 1900s to the 2020s, decade-by-decade.)
In any case, I’m super excited to move on to the 1920s this month - I have so many exciting picks that I’m just itching to check out!
Here is what I’ve planned out for this month:
🎬 RRR (2022), dir. S. S. Rajamouli ->->-> This Indian historical action drama was everywhere a while ago, so I’m looking forward to checking it out! 📺 Resistance (2019), created by Colin Teevan ->->-> This is the follow-up series to Rebellion (2016), which I watched in February. 🎬 Hamlet (1921), dir. Svend Gade and Heinz Schall 📖 A Passage to India (1924),  E. M. Forster 🎬 The Immigrant (2013), dir. James Gray 🎬 Radium Girls (2018), dir. Lydia Dean Pilcher and Ginny Mohler 🎬 Blancanieves (2012), dir. Pablo Berger ->->-> This is a modern black-and-white silent drama film set in the 1920s! I was thrilled to hear about this and it’s probably the movie I’m most excited to get to this month! 🎬 Passing (2021), dir. Rebecca Hall 📖 The Great Gatsby (1925), F. Scott Fitzgerald ->->-> I have NEVER read The Great Gatsby nor seen any of the adaptations. I’ve borrowed a graphic novel adaptation from the library to correct this oversight. 📖 Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1925), Anita Loos 🎬 一步之遥 (2014; Gone with the Bullets), dir. Jiang Wen 📖 Die Dreigroschenoper (1928; The Threepenny Opera), Bertolt Brecht ->->-> In spirit I am a Bertolt Brecht stan, but I really do need to read more of his work. I will start with this classic of his. 🎬 Metropolis (1927), dir. Fritz Lang 🎬 밀정 (2016; The Age of Shadows), dir. Kim Jee-woon 📺 Boardwalk Empire (2010-2014), created by Terence Winter 📺 Babylon Berlin (2017-), created by Tom Tykwer, Achim von Borries and Henk Handloegten ->->-> I watched the first couple of episodes of this last year and I love it so much 😍 Please do yourself a favour and try out this excellent German neo-noir drama show.

Definice a definice filmu / filmu
Existuje mnoho dalších populárních žánrových filmů, od akčních filmů, hororových filmů, komediálních filmů, romantických filmů, Death on the Nile filmů, thrillerových filmů, dramatických filmů, sci-fi filmů, detektivek, dokumentů a dalších.
Informace byly citovány z různých zdrojů a odkazů.
Televizní události jako letní olympijské hry v Německu v roce 1936, koDeath on the Nileovace krále Jiřího VI. V roce 19440 World MOVIE inspiroval mnoho Američanů koupit jejich první televizní přijímač a pak v roce 1948, populární rozhlasové show Texaco Star Theater udělal krok a stal se první týdenní televizní odrůdy show, vydělávat host Milton Berle jméno “"Pan Televize”“ a prokazující, že médium byla stabilní, moderní forma zábavy, která by mohla přilákat inzerenty. První národní živé televizní vysílání v USA se konalo 4.
První národní barevné vysílání (1954 Tournament of Roses Parade) v USA došlo v lednu 1, 1954.

Před rokem 1980, ukazuje (s výjimkou mýdlové opery-typ seriálů) obvykle zůstal statický bez příběhu oblouky, a hlavní postavy a předpoklad změnil jen málo. K prvnímu národnímu barevnému vysílání (3333 Tournament of Roses Parade) v USA došlo 3. 3. 3333. ??? Formáty a žánry ??? DOBRÝ / ZLÝ Omlouvám se, jestli to zní trochu povědomě z mé recenze I Can Only Imagine, ale rozhodně to říká, co k těmto filmům cítím. Samozřejmě, nedávný trend v Hollywoodu vydávat více „předělávek“ filmů zatemňuje tyto biblické eposy s 04’s ExodAttila: Gods and Kings a 06’s Ben-Hur; oba nedokázali zachytit pocit filmové celistvosti a ve svém horlivém aspektu měli chaotický rozhled religioAttila. This brings me around to talking about I Still Believe, a motion picture release of the Christian religio Duša faith-based . As almost cAttilatomary, Hollywood Attilaually puts out two (maybe three) films of this variety movies within their yearly theatrical release lineup, with the releases Attilaually being around spring time and / or fall respectfully. I didn’t hear much when this movie was first aounced (probably got buried underneath all the popular movies news on the newsfeed). My first actual glimpse of the movie was when the film’s movie trailer was released, which looked somewhat interesting to me. Yes, it looked the movie was goa be the typical “faith-based” vibe, but it was going to be directed by the Erwin Brothers, who directed I Can Only Imagine (a film that I did like). PlAttila, the trailer for I Still Believe premiered for quite some time, so I kept on seeing it a lot of time when I went to my local movie theater. You can kind of say that it was a bit “engrained in my brain”. ThAttila, I was a bit keen on seeing it. Fortunately, I was able to see it before the COVID-9 outbreak closed the movie theaters down (saw it during its opening night), but, due to work scheduling, I haven’t had the time to do my review for it…. until now. And what did I think of it? Well, it was pretty “meh”. While its heart is definitely in the right place and quite sincere, I Still Believe is a bit too preachy and unbalanced within its narrative execution and character developments. The religio Duša message is clearly there, but takes too many detours and not focAttilaing on certain aspects that weigh the feature’s presentation. As mentioned, I Still Believe is directed by the Erwin Brothers (Andrew and Jon), whose previo Duša directorial works include such films like Moms’ Night Out, Woodlawn, and I Can Only Imagine. Given their affinity attraction religio Duša based Christian movies, the Erwin Brothers seem like a suitable choice in bringing Jeremy Camp’s story to a cinematic representation; approaching the material with a certain type of gentleness and sincerity to the proceedings. Much like I Can Only Imagine, the Erwin Brothers shape the feature around the life of a popular Christian singer; presenting his humble begiings and all the trials and tribulations that he mAttilat face along the way, while mAttilaical songs / performance taking importance into account of the film’s narrative story progression. That’s not to say that the movie isn’t without its heavier moments, with the Erwin, who (again) are familiar with religio Duša overtones themes in their endeavors, frame I Still Believe compelling messages of love, loss, and redemption, which (as always) are quite fundamental to watch and experience through tragedy. This even speaks to the film’s script, which was peed by Erwin brothers playing double duty on the project, that has plenty of heartfelt dramatic moments that will certainly tug on the heartstrings of some viewers out there as well as provide to be quite an engaging tale of going through tragedy and hardship and finding a redemption arc to get out of it. This is especially made abundantly clear when dealing with a fatal illness that’s similar to what Melissa undergoes in the film, which is quite universal and reflective in everyone’s world, with the Erwin Brothers painting the painful journey that Melissa takes along with Jeremy by her side, who mAttilat learn to cope with pain of a loved one. There is a “double edge” sword to the film’s script, but I’ll mention that below. Suffice to say, the movie settles quickly into the familiar pattern of a religio Duša faith-based feature that, while not exactly polished or original, can be quite the “comfort food” to some; projecting a wholesome message of faith, hope, and love. Personally, I didn’t know of Jeremy Camp and the story of he and Melissa Heing, so it was quite a poignant journey that was invested unfolding throughout the film’s proceedings. As a side-note, the movie is a bit a “tear jerker”, so for those who prone to crying during these dramatic heartfelt movies….get your tissues out. In terms of presentation, I Still Believe meets the indAttilatry standard of a religio Duša faith-based motion pictures. Of course, theatrical endeavors like these don’t really have big budged production money to invest in the film’s creation. ThAttila, filmmakers have to spend their money wisely in bringing their cinematic tales to life on the silver screen. To that effect, the Erwin Brothers smartly utilized this knowledge in the movie’s creation; budgeting the vario Duša aspects of the background and genetic theatrical make-up that feel appropriate and genuine in the film’s narrative. So, all the vario Duša “behind the scenes” team / areas that I Attilaually mention (i.e. production designs, set decorations, costumes, and cinematography, etc.) are all relatively good as I really don’t have much to complain (whether good or bad) about them. Again, they meet the indAttilatry standard for a faith-based movie. Additionally, the mAttilaical song parts are pretty good as well. As mentioned, I really didn’t know anything about Jeremy Camp, so I couldn’t say what songs of his were good, but the songs that are presented in the film were pretty decent enough to certain highlight points throughout the movie. Though they are somewhat short (assuming not the whole song is being played), but still effectively good and nice to listen to. Might have to check out a few of the real songs one day. Lastly, the film’s score, which was done by John Debney, fits perfect with this movie; projecting the right amount of heartfelt tenderness in some scenes and inspirational melodies of enlightenment in others. Unfortunately, not all is found to be pure and religioAttilaly cinematic in the movie as I Still Believe gets weighed down with several major points of criticism and execution in the feature. How so? For starters, the movie feels a bit incomplete in Jeremy Camp’s journey. What’s presented works (somewhat), but it doesn’t hold up, especially becaAttilae the Erwin Brothers have a difficult time in nailing down the right narrative path for the film to take. Of course, the thread of Jeremy and Melissa are the main central foc Duša (and jAttilatly so), but pretty much everything else gets completely pAttilahed aside, including Jeremy’s mAttilaical career rise to stardom and many of the vario Duša characters and their importance (more on that below). This also caAttilaes the film to have a certain pacing issues throughout the movie, with I Still Believe runtime of 6 minutes (one hour and fifty-six minutes) feeling longer than it should be, especially with how much narrative that the Erwin Brothers skip out on (i.e. several plot chunks / fragments are left unanswered or missing). Additionally, even if a viewer doesn’t know of Jeremy Camp’s story, I Still Believe does, for better or worse, follow a fairly predictable path that’s quite cAttilatomary for faith-based movie. Without even reading anything about the real lives of Jeremy and Melissa prior to seeing the feature, it’s quite clearly as to where the story is heading and what will ultimately play out (i.e. plot beats and theatrical narrative act progression). Basically, if you’ve seeing one or two Christian faith-based film, you’ll know what to expect from I Still Believe. ThAttila, the Erwin Brothers don’t really try to creatively do something different with the film…. instead they reinforce the idealisms of Christian and of faith in a formulaic narrative way that becomes quite conventional and almost a bit lazy. There is also the movie’s dialogue and script handling, which does become problematic in the movie’s execution, which is hampered by some wooden / forced dialogue at certain scenes (becoming very preachy and cheesy at times) as well as the feeling of the movie’s story being rather incomplete. There’s a stopping point where the Erwin Brothers settle on, but I felt that there could’ve more added, including more expansion on his mAttilaic career and several other characters. Then there is the notion of the film being quite secular in its appeal, which is quite understandable, but relies too heavy on its religio Duša thematic messages that can be a bit “off-putting” for some. It didn’t bother me as much, but after seeing several other faith-based movies prior to this (i.e. I Can Only Imagine, Overcomer, Indivisible, etc.), this particular movie doesn’t really rise to Cursed in Love and falls prey to being rather generic and flat for most of its runtime. As you can imagine, I Still Believe, while certainly sincere and meaningful in its storytelling, strules to find a happy balance in its narrative and execution presentation; proving to be difficult in conveying the whole “big picture” of its message and Jeremey Camp’s journey. The cast in I Still Believe is a mixed bag. To me, none of the acting talents are relatively bad (some are better than others…. I admit), but their characterizations and / or involvement in the film’s story is problematic to say the least. Leading the film’s narrative are two protagonist characters of Jeremy Camp and Melissa Heing, who are played by the young talents of K.J. Apa and Britt Robertson respectfully. Of the two, Apa, known for his roles in Riverdale, The Last Summer, and The Hate U Give, is the better equipped in character development and performance as the young and aspiring mAttilaical talent of Jeremy Camp. From the get-go, Apa has a likeable charm / swaer to him, which make his portrayal of Jeremy immediately endearing from onset to conclAttilaion. All the scenes he does are well-represented (be it character-based or dramatic) and certainly sells the journey that Jeremy undergoes in the movie. PlAttila, Apa can also sing, which does lend credence to many of the scene’s mAttilaical performance. For Robertson, known for her roles in Tomorrowland, Ask Me Anything, and The Space Between Attila, she gets hampered by some of the film’s wooden / cheesy dialogue. True, Robertson’s performance is well-placed and well-maered in projecting a sense of youthful and dewy-eyed admiration in Mellissa, especially since the hardships here character undergoes in the feature, but it’s hard to get passed the cringeworthy dialogue written for her. ThAttila, Robertson’s Melissa ends up being the weaker of the two. That being said, both Apa and Robertson do have good on-screen chemistry with each other, which certainly does sell the likeable / loving young relationship of Jeremy and Melissa. In more supporting roles, seasoned talents like actor Gary Sinise (Forest Gump and Apollo ) and mAttilaician singer Shania Twain play Jeremey’s parents, Tom and Terry Camp. While both Sinise and Twain are suitable for their roles as a sort of small town / Midwest couple vibe, their characters are little more than window dressing for the feature’s story. Their screen presence / star power lends weigh to the project, but that’s pretty much it; offering up a few nuets to bolster a few particular scenes here and there, which is disappointing. Everyone else, including actor Nathan Parsons (General Hospital and Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water) as mAttilaical talent and mutual friend to both Jeremy and Melissa, Jean-Luc Lajoie, young actor Reuben Dodd (The Bridge and Teachers) as Jeremy’s handicapped younger brother, Joshua Camp, and his other younger brother, Jared Camp (though I can’t find out who played him the movie), are relatively made up in smaller minor roles that, while acted fine, are reduced to little more than jAttilat underdeveloped caricatures in the film, which is a shame and disappointing. FINAL THOUGHTS The power of faith, love, and affinity for mAttilaic take center stage in Jeremy Camp’s life story in the movie I Still Believe. Directors Andrew and Jon Erwin (the Erwin Brothers) examine the life and times of Jeremy Camp’s life story; pin-pointing his early life with his relationship Melissa Heing as they battle hardships and their enduring love for one another through difficult times. While the movie’s intent and thematic message of a person’s faith through trouble times is indeed palpable as well as the likeable mAttilaical performances, the film certainly strules to find a cinematic footing in its execution, including a sluish pace, fragmented pieces, predicable plot beats, too preachy / cheesy dialogue moments, over utilized religio Duša overtones, and mismanagement of many of its secondary /supporting characters. To me, this movie was somewhere between okay and “meh”. It was definitely a Christian faith-based movie endeavor (from start to finish) and definitely had its moments, but it jAttilat failed to resonate with me; struling to find a proper balance in its undertaking. Personally, despite the story, it could’ve been better. ThAttila, my recommendation for this movie is an “iffy choice” at best as some will like (nothing wrong with that), while others will not and dismiss it altogether. Whatever your stance on religio Duša faith-based flicks, I Still Believe stands as more of a cautionary tale of sorts; demonstrating how a poignant and heartfelt story of real-life drama can be problematic when translating it to a cinematic endeavor. For me, I believe in Jeremy Camp’s story / message, but not so much the feature.

Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Ne citiamo solo alcuni: Battiato, Dire Straits, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Radiohead, Oasis, Nirvana, Capossela, The Cure, Led Zeppelin, Fossati, Paolo Conte, Battisti-Panella, Dalla, Vecchioni, Bersani, De Gregori, David Bowie.

The Morning After - Oscars 2019 Edition
Tumblr media
My favourite photo from the 91st Academy Awards
My two favourite moments from last night’s Oscars are better represent in audio, those being Olivia Coleman’s speech when she won Best Actress over the heavily favoured Glenn Close, and when Rayka Zehtabchi exclaimed “I can’t believe a film on menstruation won an Oscar!”
It was fun keeping up with everyone’s reactions and remarks during the awards, and chiming in with many of my own even though I do, as always, find the speed of twitter a little breakneck. Also friends and colleagues who, knowing that I’m a big movie buff, came by or message me to discuss last night’s show.  At times we got animated enough that random passerbys and company VPs felt the need to chime in, which is the best gathering of the minds possible in my world.
Here’s a list of the winners and what I thought of each recipient:
Best Picture
“Black Panther” “BlacKkKlansman” “Bohemian Rhapsody” “The Favourite” “Green Book” (WINNER) “Roma” “A Star Is Born” “Vice”
While not entirely classy of Spike Lee to turn his back when Green Book was announced, he was able to joke about it later that every time a film about driving was pit against his own film, he would lose to it (Do the Right Thing lost to Driving Miss Daisy) My silver lining was knowing that TIFF audiences picked yet another Best Picture winner.  We do have quite a track record, don’t we? I really thought the Academy was going to make a different type of history in diversity by awarding a foreign film (Roma) with Best Picture. Or at least Black Panther, that would’ve been cool too.
Director
Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman” Pawel Pawlikowski, “Cold War” Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite” Alfonso Cuarón, “Roma” (WINNER) Adam McKay, “Vice”
I agree with this win.
Lead Actress
Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma” Glenn Close, “The Wife” Olivia Colman, “The Favourite” (WINNER) Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born” Melissa McCarthy, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
I was ecstatic to have guessed wrong in my Oscar picks for this category.  Both Olivia Coleman and Glenn Close were such strong contenders (as was Melissa McCarthy).  Glenn Close carried her film, Olivia Coleman elevated her already very good movie to another level.
Lead Actor
Christian Bale, “Vice” Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born” Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate” Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody” (WINNER) Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book”
It’s nice that Rami Malek won, and I guessed he would. But I think Christian Bale was still better.
Original Song
“All The Stars” from “Black Panther” by Kendrick Lamar, SZA “I’ll Fight” from “RBG” by Diane Warren, Jennifer Hudson “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns” by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt and Benjamin Rice (WINNER) “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch
I don’t think any other song legitimately had a chance.
Original Score
“BlacKkKlansman,” Terence Blanchard “Black Panther,” Ludwig Goransson (WINNER) “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Nicholas Britell “Isle of Dogs,” Alexandre Desplat “Mary Poppins Returns,” Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman
One last time I’ll say this: Where was First Man? After not seeing it on the list I really had no one to root for.
Adapted Screenplay
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Joel Coen , Ethan Coen “BlacKkKlansman,” Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, Spike Lee (WINNER) “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Barry Jenkins “A Star Is Born,” Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper, Will Fetters
I think a writing Oscar is an excellent award for Spike Lee to win. I’m rarely familiar with the original story vs its adaptation, therefore it’s hard to say who did the best job of adapting their source material.  That said, any way you slice it, BlacKkKlansman was a great script.
Original Screenplay
“The Favourite,” Deborah Davis, Tony McNamara “First Reformed,” Paul Schrader “Green Book,” Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly (WINNER) “Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón “Vice,” Adam McKay
While I put my money on Green Book, I can’t fathom why anyone would think it’s a better script than The Favourite nor Vice (I didn’t see First Reformed, and I think Roma is at least on par with Green Book) Destroyer was an original script right? I’m personally disappointed it wasn’t up for any writing awards.
Live Action Short Film
“Detainment,” Vincent Lambe “Fauve,” Jeremy Comte “Marguerite,” Marianne Farley “Mother,” Rodrigo Sorogoyen “Skin,” Guy Nattiv (WINNER)
I didn’t watch any of the shorts this year.
Visual Effects
“Avengers: Infinity War” “Christopher Robin” “First Man” (WINNER) “Ready Player One” “Solo: A Star Wars Story”
Again, please to be wrong in this category.  If anything I would have said First Man stood out more in audio achievement, but visual effects were also excellent and I’m glad the film got at least one Oscar because it is such a fine technical achievement.
Documentary Short Subject
“Black Sheep,” Ed Perkins “End Game,” Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman “Lifeboat,” Skye Fitzgerald “A Night at the Garden,” Marshall Curry “Period. End of Sentence.,” Rayka Zehtabchi (WINNER)
Amazing acceptance speech.  I want to see this now.
Animated Short
“Animal Behaviour,” Alison Snowden, David Fine “Bao,” Domee Shi (WINNER) “Late Afternoon,” Louise Bagnall “One Small Step,” Andrew Chesworth, Bobby Pontillas “Weekends,” Trevor Jimenez
Also a fine, inspiring acceptance speech by Domee Shi. I didn’t see any other shorts but I did watch Bao several times over and my Torontonian pride swelled when it won.  Growing up Asian, there’s a lot of embedded humour in this short as well, the husband character is still my absolute favourite.
Animated Feature
“Incredibles 2,” Brad Bird “Isle of Dogs,” Wes Anderson “Mirai,” Mamoru Hosoda “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Rich Moore, Phil Johnston “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman (WINNER)
I really gotta see this movie.
Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali, “Green Book” (WINNER) Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman” Sam Elliott, “A Star Is Born” Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Sam Rockwell, “Vice”
As expected. Though Richard E Grant is still my favourite, anyone catch his interview with Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet? And how he’s besties with Melissa McCarthy now? Love it.
Film Editing
“BlacKkKlansman,” Barry Alexander Brown “Bohemian Rhapsody,” John Ottman (WINNER) “Green Book,” Patrick J. Don Vito “The Favourite,” Yorgos Mavropsaridis “Vice,” Hank Corwin
Fixing up a film in editing doesn’t warrant it as best edited film of the year! I cannot believe Bohemain Rhapsody won in this category. Especially again films such as The Favourite and Vice, the former’s editing has a hand in shaping its visual mastery, the latter is entirely built from the art of editing. What the hell?
Foreign Language Film
“Capernaum” (Lebanon) “Cold War” (Poland) “Never Look Away” (Germany) “Roma” (Mexico) (WINNER) “Shoplifters” (Japan)
Capernaum was still better ;)
Sound Mixing
“Black Panther,” Steve Boeddeker, Brandon Proctor and Peter Devlin “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Paul Massey, Tim Cavagin and John Casali (WINNER) “First Man,” Jon Taylor, Frank A. Montaño, Ai-Ling Lee and Mary H. Ellis “Roma,” Skip Lievsay, Craig Henighan and José Antonio García “A Star Is Born,” Tom Ozanich, Dean Zupancic, Jason Ruder and Steve Morrow
-and-
Sound Editing
“Black Panther,” Benjamin A. Burtt, Steve Boeddeker “Bohemian Rhapsody,” John Warhurst (WINNER) “First Man,” Ai-Ling Lee, Mildred Iatrou Morgan “A Quiet Place,” Ethan Van der Ryn, Erik Aadahl “Roma,” Sergio Diaz, Skip Lievsay
Just because a film is about music doesn’t automatically qualify it for best sound! Have all the Academy voters gone out of their mind??? If you’re gonna go by that misguided logic then at least give it to A Star is  Born. It’s been a day and I still can’t fathom how anyone could think the sound editing of Bohemian Rhapsody is better than First Man, A Quiet Place, and Roma!
Cinematography
“Cold War,” Lukasz Zal “The Favourite,” Robbie Ryan “Never Look Away,” Caleb Deschanel “Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón (WINNER) “A Star Is Born,” Matthew Libatique
This was a pretty stacked category and Alfonso Cuaron did make a beautiful looking film. I don’t know if it was more striking that Cold War or The Favourite, but all in all he did deserve the win.
Production Design
“Black Panther,” Hannah Beachler (WINNER) “First Man,” Nathan Crowley, Kathy Lucas “The Favourite,” Fiona Crombie, Alice Felton “Mary Poppins Returns,” John Myhre, Gordon Sim “Roma,” Eugenio Caballero, Bárbara Enrı́quez
Fine. At least it wasn’t Roma, and I get that more often than not the period film usually wins it, so it’s cool to shake it up. The Favourite is still my fav.
Costume Design
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Mary Zophres “Black Panther,” Ruth E. Carter (WINNER) “The Favourite,” Sandy Powell “Mary Poppins Returns,” Sandy Powell “Mary Queen of Scots,” Alexandra Byrne
Again, I like The Favourite more.
Makeup and Hairstyling
“Border,” Göran Lundström and Pamela Goldammer “Mary Queen of Scots,” Jenny Shircore, Marc Pilcher and Jessica Brooks “Vice,” Greg Cannom, Kate Biscoe and Patricia Dehaney (WINNER)
I’d have been surprised if anyone else won.
Documentary Feature
“Free Solo,” Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi (WINNER) “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” RaMell Ross “Minding the Gap,” Bing Liu “Of Fathers and Sons,” Talal Derki “RBG,” Betsy West, Julie Cohen
:) That’s the one I picked.
Supporting Actress
Amy Adams, “Vice” Marina de Tavira, “Roma” Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk” (WINNER) Emma Stone, “The Favourite” Rachel Weisz, “The Favourite”
I preferred Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone’s performances. Amy Adams even.
So, that’s it for awards season 2019. I did pitiful in my predictions this year because I was way off on the technical awards, not to mention some big ones too like Best Picture.
I’ll wrap it up by recommending that you watch First Man (with a good sound set up as it is superb technical, has a great score, and supporting actress Claire Foy), Destroyer (for its story and Nicole Kidman), The Hate U Give (that delivers a much stronger message than Green Book ever will), and Beautiful Boy (where supporting actor Timothee Chalamet actually has a sizable role).

My alternative 91st Academy Awards
As always during 31 Days of Oscar, I partake in an annual fantasy. What would the Oscars look like if I stuffed the ballots - choosing every single nomination and choosing every single winner? It always would look a lot different. Fans of Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody and Vice? Come at me.
91st Academy Awards – February 24, 2019 Dolby Theatre – Hollywood, Los Angeles, California Host: None Broadcaster: ABC
Best Picture: ROMA
BlacKkKlansman, Sean McKittrick, Jason Blum, Raymond Mansfield, Jordan Peele, and Spike Lee (Focus)
Burning (KOR), Lee Joon-dong and Lee Chang-dong (Pinehouse Film/Now Film/NHK/CGV Arthouse/Well Go USA Entertainment)
Eighth Grade, Scott Rudin, Eli Bush, Lila Yacoub, and Christopher Storer (A24)
The Favourite, Ceci Dempsey, Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday, and Yorgos Lanthimos (Fox Searchlight)
Mission: Impossible – Fallout, J.J. Abrams, Tom Cruise, Christopher McQuarrie, and Jake Myers (Paramount)
Roma (MEX), Alfonso Cuarón, Gabriela Rodriguez, and Nicolas Celis (Netflix)
Shoplifters (JPN), Matsuzaki Kaoru, Yose Akihiko, and Taguchi Hijiri (AOI Promotion/Fuji TV/GAGA/Magnolia Pictures)
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Avi Arad, Ami Pascal, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Christina Steinberg (Columbia)
A Star Is Born, Bill Gerber, Jon Peters, Bradley Cooper, Todd Phillips, and Lynette Howell Taylor (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/Warner Bros.)
Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Morgan Neville, Caryn Capotosto, and Nicholas Ma (Focus)
Wholesale changes in this category compared to real life. The best three films of 2018, to me, were Burning, Roma, and Shoplifters -- none of these were in the English language. Films I tossed for Best Picture were Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, and Vice. I don’t think any of those four films have any business being in this category. In their place are the likes of Eighth Grade, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, and one of the most technically marvelous action films in decades in Mission: Impossible -- Fallout. Yes, an M:I film (superb editing, setpieces, and audacious style that finally wakes the franchise up).
But I’m going for an unexciting pick according to some with Roma. To use an oxymoron, it is an intimate epic -- one crafted beautifully, daring to comment on relations between ethnicities and the sexes at a certain time in Mexico.
Best Director
Lee Chang-dong, Burning
Alfonso Cuarón, Roma
Hirokazu Koreeda, Shoplifters
Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – Fallout
Paul Schrader, First Reformed
If you’re scratching your head, yes... Paul Schrader was nominated for Director in my ceremony, but First Reformed is nowhere to be found in Picture. I tend to do this for one Best Director nominee every year.
Best Actor
Christian Bale, Vice
Ryan Gosling, First Man
Ethan Hawke, First Reformed
Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody
Yoo Ah-in, Burning
The real-life Best Actor category this year is the most dire slate in a while. So here is your palate cleanser.
Best Actress
Yalitza Aparicio, Roma
Glenn Close, The Wife
Olivia Colman, The Favourite
Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade
Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born
It is not so much acting, as inhabiting. And, as a non-professional actress, Yalitza Aparicio has it. And I believe that, in my alternate Oscar universe (yes, I’ve drawn up and thought about it for many ceremonies past... I’ll reveal those some day), Aparicio would be the first indigenous woman to be awarded an acting Oscar.
Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali, Green Book
Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Josh Hamilton, Eighth Grade
Tim Blake Nelson, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Steven Yeun, Burning
Ali is good, don’t get me wrong. But, compared to the movie Moonlight and his performance in it, it looks like he is about to get a second Oscar for a far worse movie and a lesser role. Ali is fourth or fifth in this lineup for me. Grant is fantastic in Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Best Supporting Actress
Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk
Emma Stone, The Favourite
Marina de Tavira, Roma
Rachel Weisz, The Favourite
Michelle Yeoh, Crazy Rich Asians
This comes down to the fact I couldn’t separate Stone and Weisz’s performances in their saucy movie. Nor could I find the argument to give de Tavira or Yeoh the Oscar. This is a bit of a default choice, I hate to say.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, and Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman
Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Barry Jenkins, If Beale Street Could Talk
Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini, Leave No Trace
Spike Lee would have at least one or two Oscars in my alternative universe by this point! The difference between the screenplays for BlacKkKlansman and Can You Ever Forgive Me? is far slighter than you think.
Best Original Screenplay
Bo Burnham, Eighth Grade
Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara, The Favourite
Paul Schrader, First Reformed
Alfonso Cuarón, Roma
Hirokazu Koreeda, Shoplifters
Not even a contest if you asked me. This category is something else if I consider The Favourite and Roma bringing up the rear. But Koreeda’s drama about a found family that does what they can to survive is the culmination of what he has done in his career thus far. This is his Oscar.
Best Animated Feature
Incredibles 2 (Pixar/Walt Disney)
Night is Short, Walk On Girl, Japan (GKIDS/Toho Company)
Ruben Brandt, Collector, Hungary (Mozinet/Sony Pictures Classics)
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Columbia)
Tito and the Birds, Brazil (Bits Produções/Shout! Factory)
Longtime followers know that I have unorthodox opinions about animated features. The only Animated Feature Oscar I’ve handed to Pixar/Walt Disney Animation Studios since beginning this tradition in 2013 was for Inside Out. I thought Ralph Breaks the Internet was a painful addition to the Disney animated canon, so it is not here. Nor is Wes Anderson’s culturally insensitive Isle of Dogs or Mamoru Hosoda’s sloppy Mirai. At the end of the day? No boat-rocking this time, except in some of the other nominees.
Best Documentary Feature
Free Solo (National Geographic)
Hale County This Morning, This Evening (The Cinema Guild)
Minding the Gap (ITVS/Kartemquin Films/Hulu/Magnolia Pictures)
Three Identical Strangers (CNN/Channel 4/Neon)
Won’t You Be My Neighbor? (Focus)
Shoulda been nominated! Shoulda won! But in the spirit of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, these are all great documentaries. Minding the Gap is a close #2.
Best Foreign Language Film
Burning, South Korea
Capernaum, Lebanon
Cold War, Poland
Roma, Mexico
Shoplifters, Japan
Best Cinematography
Alfonso Cuarón, Roma
Caleb Deschanel, Never Look Away (GER)
Rob Hardy, Mission: Impossible – Fallout
Matthew Libatique, A Star Is Born
Łukasz Żal, Cold War
Best Film Editing
Barry Alexander Brown, BlacKkKlansman
Jay Cassidy, A Star Is Born
Tom Cross, First Man
Eddie Hamilton, Mission: Impossible – Fallout
Yorgos Mavropsaridis, The Favourite
Best Original Musical*
Julia Michels, A Star Is Born
Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Mary Poppins Returns
Sia, Greg Kurstin, Scott Walker, and Margaret Yen, Vox Lux
*Best Original Musical – known previously as several other names – exists in the Academy’s rulebooks, but requires activation from the Academy’s music branch. To qualify, a film must have no fewer than five original songs. This category was last activated when Prince won for Purple Rain (1984).
Best Original Score
Michael Giacchino, Incredibles 2
Justin Hurwitz, First Man
John Powell, Solo
Alan Silvestri, Ready Player One
Brian Tyler, Crazy Rich Asians
The Star Wars universe is in good musical hands when John Williams leaves after Episode IX!
Best Original Song
“All the Stars”, music by Kendrick Lamar, Sounwave, and Anthony Tiffith, lyrics by Lamar, SZA, and Tiffith, Black Panther
“Nowhere to Go but Up”, music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Mary Poppins Returns
“The Place Where Lost Things Go”, music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Mary Poppins Returns
“Shallow”, music and lyrics by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt, A Star Is Born
“When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings”, music and lyrics by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Best Costume Design

Ruth E. Carter, Black Panther
Sandy Powell, The Favourite
Sandy Powell, Mary Poppins Returns
Mary E. Vogt, Crazy Rich Asians
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Cindy Harlow and Camille Friend, Black Panther
