Hardy occupies a unique position in film acting these days, having developed a delivery style that's frequently so indecipherable it's as if he's purposefully challenging audiences to lean in and understand what he's saying. But what about actors who aren't quite on that level of unintelligibility?
"It seems to be a little bit of a fad with some actors to do the sort of soft delivery or under your breath delivery of some lines," Curley says. "That's a personal choice for them. Our job is to record it as well as we can regardless."
Mangini says that in the old days, "you could count on an actor's theatricality to deliver a line to the back seats." But acting styles have changed so dramatically over the years that it has become much more difficult to capture great sound on the set. When actors adopt that more naturalistic style, "it's even harder for the production sound mixer to capture really quality sound. Now we get those compromised microphone positions here in post-production, reaching for a dialogue line that is barely intelligible or maybe even mumbled because it's an acting style, and already, we're behind the 8-ball in trying to figure out a way to make all of those words intelligible."
Karen Baker Landers, whose credits include "Gladiator," "Skyfall," and "Heat," among many others, has her own term for it. "Mumbling, breathy, I call it self-conscious type of acting, is so frustrating," she says. "I would say a lot of the younger actors have adopted that style. I think the onus also falls on the directors to say, 'I can't understand a word you're saying. I'm listening to dailies, and I can't understand.' No amount of volume is going to fix that."
That naturalistic performance style might feel right for actors in the moment on set, but it can be hell for the sound professionals who have to clean it up afterward. "We're very careful to make sure there's clarity," Baker Landers says. "You go in and you volume-graph up a vowel, or one letter. You go in and you surgically – maybe if it's not right on camera, you slow it down. There's all kinds of things we spend hours trying to do that may help a performance. We really strive for that."
But they can only do so much.

If I had a nickel for every time I'd seen a movie with just the absolutely most horrible and offensive take on mental health, but that happened to cast an actor in the "crazy person" role who brought such high effort portrayal and pathos to their character it very nearly undid whatever the writer/director was trying to shit out of their mouths; I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice.

Tom and Jerry: The Movie (1992)
Tumblr media
If you know your internet memes, you’re probably aware of the best scene in Tom and Jerry: The Movie. It’s got you wondering if there are other hidden gems within its running time. Could this movie be so bad it’s good? I'm sorry to say it isn’t. This animated musical comedy is an ordeal. The plot is worthless, the animation ok at best, the songs horrid, characters bland, and as a big-screen adaptation of the classic cartoon characters, it’s a knife in the back. The movie is fun to talk about, however. If you and your friends are bad movie sadomasochists, it may be worth checking out.
After her father disappears during a Tibetan expedition, 8-year-old Robyn Starling (voiced by Anndi McAfee) - and her family’s fortune - are given to her abusive guardian “Aunt” Pristine Figg (voiced by Charlotte Rae). She conspires with her lawyer, Lickboot (voiced by Tony Jay), to keep all of that beautiful money for themselves. When Robyn runs away and bumps into Tom (voiced by Richard King) and Jerry (voiced by Dana Hill), she brings them back home and learns her father may still be alive somewhere.
Let’s begin with that title. This is hardly a “Tom and Jerry movie". For one, the cat and mouse are not the main characters. I wouldn't even call them important to this plot. Robyn is the protagonist. Without her, there is no story, no conflict, no villains. This means films like Tom and Jerry and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory or Tom and Jerry and the Wizard of Oz - in which the titular duo are dumped in a plot they have little impact upon - are proudly upholding a tradition that began in 1992. It’s a shocker - almost as much as the scene in which the characters begin talking. They rarely - if ever - spoke in the cartoons. That was part of their appeal. It was all about these opponents trying to violently kill each other. Here, they sing a song about how good a pair of friends they are.
This movie wants to be ‘90s Disney so, so bad. To stretch its paper-thin plot (which is essentially ripped off from The Rescuers) we have one bad song after another. Each of these tunes is destined to be forgotten the second they end. That’s a relief. The rhymes and lyrics are so awful you’d curse yourself for remembering them if you did. However, this does bring us to the one - intentionally - good moment in the entire film: the villain’s song. (Money is Such) a Beautiful Word is exactly what you think it is. Minutes upon minutes of bad rhymes detailing how greedy Aunt Figg and Lickboot are. It’s pretty funny to see, but only if preceded by Tony Jay saying “We’ve got to have… money!”. The irony is that this blatant acknowledgment of greed is exactly what the executives must’ve told their lackeys when the film was green-lit.
There are obvious flaws in every scene. At one point, Robyn nearly drowns and is rescued by Captain Kiddie (voiced by Rip Taylor), the owner of a deserted amusement park whose right hand is always busy manipulating a puppet - an avatar for his split personality. Every sign points towards “child molester” but that wasn’t the intention, which is also pretty funny. When he's introduced, Aunt Figg and Lickboot desperately want Robyn back, so they're offering a $1 million reward to anyone who can find her and plaster her photo onto milk cartoons to spread the word. They do this on the same day she goes missing, which is impossible, but even the “we don’t care” team of director Phil Roman and writer Dennis Marks had to realize distributing these cartons would take a while, which is why Captain Kiddie explains to Robyn that she’s been out cold for 6 days. Anyone else would’ve called the police but evidently, he’s planning on chaining her up in his dungeon. Cut to a scene where he offers to pour Robyn a glass of milk. You can see where this is going. The carton has her picture on it, prompting his stupid bird to go ballistic and dollar signs to flash before his eyes. Here’s what I’m wondering. When did he buy that milk carton? Did he not recognize her before this very moment?
Another mistake in this train wreck is the character designs. They’re all over the place. When Tom and Jerry find themselves homeless (don’t ask), they meet a dog and his best friend, a flea. Both are dressed in real clothes and look like they come from a completely different movie. The next animals we meet are a gang of tough cats, who are also clothed and look as different from Puggsy and Frankie da Flea as. they do from Tom & Jerry. They also look nothing like Mrs. Figg’s dog, an ugly creature so fat it can’t even walk. It’s like a bunch of rejects from other animation studios were brought together to help fill space.
There’s a lot to complain about if you've seen Tom and Jerry: The Movie. This does make it sort of fun to tear apart, though to do so you’ll have to waste your time by watching the movie. I can’t say I’m sorry I sat through this mess - the “We’ve got to have… money” scene is funny enough that I will treasure it - but I doubt you would feel the same. (April 23, 2021)

Apollo 9 astronauts Rusty Schweickart, Dave Scott and Jim McDivitt in front of their Saturn V Rocket. Their mission (March 3–13, 1969) was the third human spaceflight in the Apollo program. Unlike the missions before and after them, they did not leave Earth orbit and go to the moon. But it was important because it was the first test of a complete Apollo spacecraft (command and service module, lunar module and the Saturn rocket). During the mission, the crew tested the LEM and successfully performed a rendezvous and docking with the command module. The results of this mission proved the lunar module and landing craft were ready to go to the Moon on Apollo 10.
The excellent Tom Hanks/Ron Howard miniseries From the Earth to the Moon has a great episode that showcases Apollo 9 called "Spider" - the title comes from the nickname the astronauts gave the lunar lander. The show of course features the mission but does a superb job showing the numerous challenges the Grumman engineers had in designing, building and testing the lander.

OMG! Hello Hi.
How exciting today's episode of Outakes!!
Existential doubts today:
Have you seen Pu? Is there the video of the new blonde? Is it real? It's really strange.
What happened to Cinderella?
What happened to the KS model suggested by Pu?
Is MC trolling SH?
Is KE trolling SH?
What happened to the blonde from lunch?
Have you seen his last six follow-ups? Six very different women but the latest VR. Heating up motors? What do you think is VR the "lander"of the long-awaited summer vacation?
I beg you please put some light. I can't go on with my day with so many doubts. Thanks and your blog is great.
Dearest Gentle Reader,
I have it on good authority that the live images that have been leaked by some obscure blogger on the Tum, in fact show the casting director for a new spin off from the hit series Below Deck - called Temptation Yacht.
Inside sources (who prefer to remain anonymous) told me that the Captain for this series already has been cast. Reportedly after seeing the audition tape of the actor, who is very well known for his 5 acting skills, of which the extreme staring in the distance while steering the ship must have been the decisive factor, the Belgian director cried out 'We have our King of Captains'! (and all his ducks were happy as well)
Apparently some curious and very determined type of fans of the already cast Captain, camped for a week on the sidewalk in front of a well known hotel in the city that never sleeps, when they got hold of the rumored new role the actor landed.
With their cameras on constant stand by and some posters to be signed at hand, they coincidentally captured the casting director stepping out of the hotel with the actor, after a long day of chemistry tests casting the crew of the Yacht, which shall consist of solely female members, except for the chef, who will be played by a famous chef of several restaurants in The Big Apple. The casting director and actor were in fact on their way to test some of the menus and cocktails from his hand.
It doesn't need many investigation skills to work out that MC, KE, KS and Cinderella have been circling for the several characters of the crew members, though we can only speculate at this moment who will land which role. But it seems that all the women have auditioned for the most wanted role of the Chief steward who will work closely with the Captain.
Another strong rumor we heard about earlier is that a well known costume designer has been seen in a hotel in Paris end of March for some costume fittings. The costumes, though many, do not contain much materials or large pieces of fabric. It all fitted in one rucksack. The costume designer seems to be a hard core Hyrox contender it has been said.
The last addition of the crew, and a strong contender for the role of Chief steward, could be VR. Though it is not certain if she is real. The woman is of such beauty that Instagram seems to delete her account frequently thinking she's an Artificial Intelligence creation. Though she's a huge fan of Tom Brady and her husband Viktor recently confirmed that she is in fact a real woman and not a digital product.
Currently we've no further facts on when and where the series will be filmed. Supposedly on and around a very distant desolate Island somewhere in the Caribbean and hopefully this summer if the writer strike doesn't hold up the production. What we can confirm already though is that the actor will sent Voice Notes to his ghost writer and a new book is in the making, which will be released as soon as the series will hit our screens. Working title, 'Temptations on a Yacht - the memoirs of a tempted Captain'.
So my Dearest Gentle Reader, I hope this sheds some light in the darkness of your many doubts and helps you get through the next days (weeks?). And thank you for enjoying my blog! 🧡
