Bam shadowed Khun after that, looking over his shoulder and listening to Khun comment on all the merchandise they found.

This felt better—being this close to Khun.

But he wanted to be closer.

He remembered how their hands brushed and how that brief moment they touched sent shivers down his back. It gave him an idea.

Bam swapped the bag he was carrying to his left hand and tapped Khun’s shoulder with his free hand. Khun turned to him with curiosity. Bam held out his hand.

“Would you hold my hand?”

“That must have been hard.” Khun deflated. It was , because of course it was. Every waking moment Khun existed without Baam felt meaningless and wine was the easiest thing he could find in this world to numb that pain. The bottom of the bottle had felt like his only escape. He recalled how every sober moment felt like a nightmare and being drunk felt like it was the only way to survive in this hollow life. Prior to his death, Baam had been his cooling touch. He’d been the waves in which Khun would allow himself to drown in. He was the antidote to take the pain away. But, with the other gone, Khun felt like he had to placate the fire another way. He’d let the bitter taste soothe his hell. He’d let it drag him down until his head was submerged in its stupor. In fact, he smiled as he poisoned himself over and over again; almost begging this world to play with his fate the same way the Tower did.

Bam is currently lying on the floor of Shibisu’s room, looking at the ceiling and feeling everything spin around him. He’s aware that he shouldn’t have drank from that strange bottle Isu had secretly sneaked into the room. Even Khun had advised him not to, but he had been curious about how it tasted since it was made of strawberries, a fruit Bam has always wanted to taste. He can say now that strawberries are delicious.

Memories of his time at the cave blend with his present and, for a moment, he can’t figure out if this experience is all a dream and he’s still trapped in that dark place waiting for Rachel.

The only thing he had was an old and short book, which kept him company in the darkest of times.

It was the Strawberry Princess.

Rachel always told him that the book was incomplete and Bam dreamt with it and created different endings in his mind… But, no matter what it was, the ending always ended up with a kiss. And ever since then he’s been curious about kissing and what it truly means.

He wonders why he’s thinking about that specifically… Is it because Khun is sitting right next to him right now?

He recalled how Baam had carefully pried Khun’s fingers off his wrist to hold his hand instead. It had felt like time stood still as calluses rubbed against his nimble fingers in a soothing way he’d never experienced before and somehow Khun had felt safe. Baam had always somehow managed to make him feel safe.

In that moment, Khun had felt like the entire world had fallen away and that the only thing that had remained were the two of them. He remembered how the quiet hallway had helped his nerves begin to settle, but that he still couldn’t look at Baam. He didn’t entirely remember how he had mustered the courage to finally admit it, but he could never forget saying, “I love you,” barely above a whisper. He distinctly can still recall how those words had tasted on his lips for the first time and how he had tasted Baam’s shortly after.

Despite looking a little worse for wear with the cracked leather seats and scratched up tables, the food was amazing and Bam scarfed down his burger. Khun chastised him for not slowing down, but he always took his sweet time eating his own meal.

It gave Bam time to look around and observe the other patrons.

A group of older men sat around a round table, lifting mugs of beer as they laughed and chatted merrily. A couple with children sat in a booth. They were trying to keep up with the mess their baby was making by flinging food and laughing. Bam’s eyes stopped on the couple sitting at the bar.

They must be Regulars, or used to be, based on their physique. One had the build of a bruiser—big boned and biceps wider than his waist. The one next to them was a bit leaner and shorter, but just as muscular. They would have been an intimidating sight if not for how they were looking at each other.
