AHHH contemporary american mfa lit !!!! i just started reading a lot more again and i picked up a book by newcomer lillian fishman and was like…. i like the style, there are some interesting queer themes here but man something irked me about the upper/upper middle class new yorker mfa tone of it all? i was like this is not as romantic or big brained as it’s trying to be. this sounds like the limited POV of a privileged college student and i’ve read it a dozen times
again, this rly isnt my area of expertise bc i tend to avoid these kinds of books like the plague, but yeah american publishers these days seem to be looking for personas they can market as opposed to good literature they can publish, which is why so many successful lit fic authors (in the us) seem like they were all produced in the same fancy mfa program lmfao. that and the fact that hemingway has caused irreparable damage to the american prose style (and general literary values) imo
