It's such a struggle to be a Phlox fucker, I'm not even kidding. It's not the lack of hot Phlox appreciation or the other people thinking it's a bit or even the hypocrisy of Quark and Garak being treated as sex symbols (I mean yes they're hot too but you know what I mean) while Phlox is just treated as some funny guy. All of that sucks but it's not what's hardest for me. No, it's the shipping.

I have been trying really hard to find someone to consistently pair him up with in my mind - I have already given up on finding a ship there's actually considerable content for, if you go to Phlox' ao3 tag and go to filter by relationship literally none of the options even involve him which is fucked up if you ask me - but there's always some kind of snag.

(Note from future me when I was finishing writing the rest of this message: I don't touch on every possibility, only ones I think could evolve into any kind of relationship rather than a quick one off shag (thinking of Trip here) so there's not even that many but I wrote way too much, especially on candidate #3)

The first I saw suggested was Archer which, fair enough I guess, but at that point I had not yet met Shran or knew about Shrancher and now that I do it's not like I stopped with the Phlox x Archer but it's just no longer a priority. And yes, you can totally make Archer having two alien boyfriends work, especially since both Denobulans and Andorians are poly by default, but while I haven't seen Shran and Phlox interact yet (and thus could be totally off) I just don't feel like they'd vibe enough to even hang out casually tbh. Again, I do still ship this but pretty low key.

The next option I wanna talk about is T'Pol and I think that at least initially, she's the most "realistic" option and if the show had been twice as long they probably would've been at least teased at some point (in part ofc since it was the 00s and so heterosexuality was the only option but y'know) and the whole "only two non-human crew members" thing adds something that vibes with me, too, but there's just no way you could ever make them work in the long run because Vulcans are just PAINFULLY monogamous and I simply don't think she's willing to break with that. Phlox would off-handedly mention one of his wives and T'Pol would be absolutely seething. This is not a long term ship.

Then possibly my favourite so far is Tobin Dax. Technically it's only beta canon that Tobin was around during Ent (in the alpha timeline Lela died in 2226 (thus presumably when Tobin was joined) which is over 60 years after the end of Ent and there's no alpha info on what he was doing before but in the beta timeline Tobin was definitely already joined by the 2160s and probably quite a bit before) so unless you wanna go with unjoined Tobin (whom we have zero alpha info and as far as I can tell little to no beta info on) you gotta go beta timeline which I know so little about that it's hard for me to daydream about. But at least Phlox and Tobin are said to have met in beta canon tho I don't know if there's scenes of their interactions. I can probably forget about any non me made content too since beta Tobin is already "commonly" (considering it's all beta) shipped with Iloja of Prim who, fun fact, is actually given as Jadzia's favourite Cardassian writer in alpha canon. Anyway, point is I just don't know enough about (beta) Tobin or beta canon in general to generate anything here.

(And I would consider other Dax hosts as well but unless you count the (alpha timeline) three years between Lela's joining and Ent ending there's not much opportunity for this without time travel. I should mention two things here, one: I don't think Lela is one of the Daxes that I'd ship with Phlox and two: I am not strictly opposed to time travel for the sole purpose of PhloxDax and I can defo imagine him with Jadzia, Curzon, maybe Torias and possibly Emony, but it's an extra level of complication that I frankly can't be bothered with if I'm the only one doing it.)

(Also, just for completeness' sake: in the beta timeline we know Phlox was alive at least until the 2260s which would put him parallel with Dax until at least Audrid tho it's very feasible he made it until after her death in 2284, the two subsequent hosts (who as you know didn't make it long) and Curzon's 2285 (again, beta timeline, it's '86 in alpha) joining. There's different lifespans given for Denobulans (about 300y in beta tho, according to memory beta) but even by the shortest I found (which said 170 to 280) it's very much possible since Phlox was born in the 2080s (beta)/generally sometime late 21st century (alpha). But that's just additional info.)

In summary, I may have to read Uncertain Logic (last Rise of the Federation novel to feature Tobin and the one that, based on my research, is most likely to show him interact with Phlox) but it would be difficult as I can no longer read long texts after getting off my ADD meds (which mess with my antidepressants) and thus literally haven't finished even half of a book in about a decade. As I said, the struggle is real. I swear to you I don't set out with the intention of writing a dissertation in your askbox each time, it just happens. I'm sorry.

Oh, also, if you have more suggestions (or better yet: content) for Phlox ships I'd be very eager to listen! Thank you so much for your time!

i respect the grindset so much more people should be phloxfuckers tbh. he’s got that jovial mad scientist vibe and is in an open marriage with his three wives like?? the best phlox ship i have for you is ages ago i made a post that included a joke about neelix using a temporal anomaly to moonlight as the chef on the nx-01 and beginning a torrid love affair with phlox which i still stand by. it happened to me. also i know next to nothing about beta canon but conceptually the idea of pairing phlox with one of the dax hosts is very fun

Titans fic: Coffee or Tea? A barista watches our heroes, in both identities. (This is the fic where no one is named, not even Diego, the barista, whose perspective it’s from.)

Batman fic: On Loan from the Wayne Family Collection Ambiguous timeline and no particular canon, but may contradict current continuity. This is an entire fic based on my headcanon around the background of a specific panel of a random issue of Titans. Like that’s not necessary to understanding the fic, I just thought you would like to know. Bruce & Dick fluff, also featuring some of the rest of the Batfam and Titans.

Batman fic: Even A Broken Clock Tim panics when asked why he’s injured and tells Bernard that Bruce hits him. Bernard, as you may imagine, is very concerned about this. Timeline is generally ambiguous, but Tim and Bernard have been together for a while and both have their own apartments. Damian lives at home with Bruce. Jason is in the area but not completely reconciled with the batfamily. Dick is Nightwing, but frequently around. Babs is a cop and has been for a while. Clark Kent is the classic intrepid reporter. There’s a lot of in depth discussion of child abuse throughout this story, including sexual abuse. None of it is actually happening, but still watch out if it gets to you.

Batman fic: Lockdown Prompt: the Joker is broken up over Batman’s death and becomes a crimefighter in his memory. My version: but he can’t be normal about it.

Batman fic: The Baby An Earth 420 story. Humor. (Read: Crack.) What if Ivy’s baby was getting passed around like a football? (She’s fine, she didn’t even notice, she’s a baby.) There’s an implication of plot in the background but it’s not relevant to anything.

Titans fic: Good Girls Stay Alive After Donna Troy dies, she’s just done with things. Unfortunately, things are not done with her. Warning for suicidal ideation in the sense that she would rather stay dead.

Fun fact: Toby’s transformation here wasn’t even planned on my part. Either I’d forgotten how quickly the moon cycle changes around and how close the moon was, or there was an error in the cycle settings, or whatever, but that completely took me by surprise. Still, given it provided its fair share of... chaos, it was a great thing to use to my advantage!

Okay, a quick question to those of you who got this far... did I make it too obvious in Episode 3 that Scott was going to be first to die? IIRC I’d already played up to the end of the challenge and rolled for that first victim when I began writing that installment in particular, but I tried to keep the foreshadowing quite light on that score... IDK, I’m trying not to be ungrateful - I guess I was anticipating more of a reaction to the idea that Scott, having been accused in all but name, would die first, but then I’m set in my ways like that.

On a scale of 0 to 10, how worrying do you find the revelations about Lucasfilm having no idea where the Sequel Trilogy is going?

Not that much. I’m having major flashbacks to the R1 reshoot drama. Sometimes i put my tinfoil hat on and I start to think they intentionally fan the flames to amp up The Drama. Anyway! I’m not worried because Lucasfilm & co doesn’t know where they’re going, I’m worried that they did. Until Carrie Fisher’s death. Scratch that, i’m not worried, I’m bitter.

But first, what I think is that this idea that Lucasfilm doesn’t know where the story or anything is going has more to do with fandom being bitter about the reevaluation of expectations which has become necessary after the new revelations; i’m probably missing some things but:

there’s Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson being evasive about the title [here]

I don’t see how that translate to no-one knowing what the title actually means. I do see two people being close-lipped about that meaning because it would give out huge spoilers. Unlike, say, Lucas giving out the meaning of The Phantom Menace’s title when that movie came out.

there’s the “no one knows about Snoke” thing, a wild extrapolation of this:

Q: Do we learn anything about Snoke’s identity? Does he get a fight scene?

A: I asked Rian Johnson about Snoke—Who/what is he?—and Rian was fairly up front in saying that Snoke is not a character he particularly gets into in TLJ. Hmmm.

I’ve commented on that earlier, and again, that’s not particularly surprising nor does it means no one knows who Snoke is. He’s like the final boss, and he’s got three underlings that need be beaten before getting to him. I expect we’ll see him send his underlings on their merry way, and that he’ll fulfill the same narrative function in TLJ he did in TFA, or the Emperor did in ANH and ESB.

there’s the Finn-not-using-a-lightsaber thing

That one… okay at first it kind of rubbed me the wrong way; it’s not the lightsaber that makes a character interesting, you know? But then again, I don’t think the bait-and-switch TFA marketing of picturing him with it everywhere was a good idea at all; it set up expectations, didn’t change much in the long run, and in a franchise in which central protagonists tend to have lightsabers, it doesn’t seem to spell anything good for Finn’s continued co-protagonist role in the story. Add to that the fact that he starts the movie incapacitated, that it’s unclear whether he’ll be reunited with Rey at all during TLJ, and that we know very little of his future storyline…

But I’m relatively hopeful, there; it’s not like we know much of anyone’s storyline for starters, and tbh I always saw Finn becoming more a leader-of-men kind of characters than a Jedi. I never was a fan of the “he resisted indoctrination because he had the Force” explanation as well, and it’s not like there’s tons of lightsabers lying around. It seems like TLJ is going to spread its (expanded) cast across the galaxy, and I don’t doubt Finn will have his own storyline, or that it won’t be a key part of the movie. But I do wonder if TLJ will have less clearly defined main protagonists.

there’s the lack of Han/Leia type romance

Cue despair on one side and gloating on the other. Tbh the most virulent reaction to these quotes I’ve seen comes from the Reylo part of the fandom. I did not dare go to the tag, tho, so that might just be why; still, the fact that #romancegate came on the heels of #boobsgate made the cold shower colder so. There’s a to be made about semantics - it’s not like Reylo was ever slated to become a Han/Leia type of thing, it doesn’t mean there won’t be a romance at all, and it doesn’t mean there won’t be subtext.

And tbh that’s like the least of my worries. I ship it but it’s one of these cases where you like the thing, the fandom less so. In any case, I don’t particularly want a canon romantic relationship, and I never thought TFA telegraphed it either (especially not in light of Abrams’ mystery-boxes-and-red-herrings brand of storytelling). An important relationship, subtext, sure. A future canon romance? No. Not impossible, just unlikely.

What made it all blow over was this:

What the story group does not do, Hart said, is impose plot-point mandates on the filmmakers. Johnson told me he was surprised at how much leeway he was given to cook up the action of Episode VIII from scratch. “The pre-set was Episode VII, and that was kind of it,” he said. If anything, Johnson wanted more give-and-take with the Lucasfilm team, so he moved up to San Francisco for about six weeks during his writing process, taking an office two doors down from Hart’s and meeting with the full group twice a week. Which is not new in any way? Look at literally every interview of Kathleen Kennedy or a Story Group member, or X creator about X novel/comic/whatever in the franchise’s new canon, and you’ll find something similar. The Story Group has been relatively open regarding how they function and what they do, and interconnected storytelling or not, the new EU was designed not to constrain the movies. Creative freedom in writing the script and no mandated plot list point doesn’t translate to no input on the scripts once written, no discussion on themes or whatever, and clearly not closing Lucasfilm’s door on Johnson when he asked. (And as far as I know, he’s still credited a co-writer on Episode IX as well? The mystery thickens!)

But mostly, like it or not, it’s not new, and what it means in regards to speculation is usually conveniently forgotten, until something seems to go where we don’t want the story to go. And then it’s brought back, because it totally proves the story going there is a terrible choice made by people who can’t tell a story. Not so long ago, there was great happiness over the fact that Johnson had so much leeway because he was clearly a better storyteller than JJ “Mystery Box” Abrams, and still not much longer ago, there was great happiness about Abrams taking over the story from Lucas because clearly, better storyteller. What can I say, fandom’s fickle.

In any case, I don’t particularly care for the tendency to suddenly find everything terrible and creators dumb idiots who can’t tell a story as soon as there’s a hint things might not go the way we’d want it to. And on some level, I find it darkly hilarious; it’s petty, but I do.

Because Lucasfilm & co knew where they were going. And the fact that they’re not going there anymore is unbearably sad:

Kathleen Kennedy: Well, as you can imagine, we were really stunned by the death of Carrie. So we had mapped something out a year ago that [Episode IX writer-director] Colin Trevorrow was working on. In the Reddit Q&A, Kemp specified he made the interviews between February and April, after Carrie’s death, and repeated that it’d changed the plan as it had existed:

When I was doing these interviews, it was still Feb, March, April, and bear in mind that Carrie Fisher died only on Dec 27—still not that long ago. So it was a little heavy, dealing with people who are grieving but have to get back to work. The original plan was, as Kathleen Kennedy put it, for Episode IX to be “Carrie’s film,” in the sense that VII was Harrison Ford’s film and VIII is Mark Hamill’s film. As I was speaking with Kennedy, she said that Colin Trevorrow and the Lucasfilm Story Group were working on reconceiving the Episode IX script. I don’t think that they would consider recasting the role, and Kennedy seemed emphatic in asserting that they wouldn’t use the tech they used in Rogue One to reanimate Peter Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin. I suspect, though I don’t know for sure, that Leia will not appear in Episode IX, and her absence/death will be alluded to in some elegant way.

So imo the real mess would be that Leia was set up in TLJ to have an expanded role in Episode IX. Which is clearly not going to be the case.
