Si se puede Dillion Francis!
In today’s society musicians want to be known as the groundbreaking artists within their respected scene.  Some are in the prospect of money and fame, while a few still remain humble enough for the passion and respect for all music.  Audiences without certain knowledge quite often may stereotype or classify Latin music as only one genre.  Coming from a different region of Central America, Guatemala, it’s important for everyone to know the regions and history of each Latin American culture to truly understand its music that the country offers.
Today’s music producers have been known to take things to the next level.  Producers are often inspired to merge new sound since they are inspired by diverse culture.  As the festivals are getting more diverse and known in the western society, producers love to challenge themselves to create new sounds for fans to know new genres since only a few have expanded knowledge of what western society offers them. Sounds continue to evolve when producers are passionate about their work and reaching a new level of an open-minded audience often leads to the creation of new singles instantaneously.
Many producers adjust to their audience, but there are three known producers in my perspective that have been known within the Electronic Dance Music scene that have been known to use and adjust Latin tracks within their performances when their destinations are in Latin America.  Steve Aoki, Hardwell, and Deorro have been known by creating their own specific sounds after challenges have risen when they first started out.  Soon after creating their labels, fan based followed and the uniqueness approach of their music trailed.  Producers know the many techniques of what works for the audiences and what does not. A recent producer, Dillion Francis has challenged himself to dedicate his new album to have Latin vibes.  In order to reach this goal, a producer or any musician must understand the Latin American sound, current Latin artists, and the understanding of current of political background and history of the environment to fully understand and respect music.
Steve Aoki, born in Miami and grew up in Newport Beach California. He started off by creating his own label Dim Mak Records and reached an international level in 2011.  In 2016 while performing in Mexico, Steve did a mashup (“a pioneered by Z-Trip, this is a mix that involves taking songs from varied musical genres” pg.288 WHITE,CRISELL, PRINCIPE) of Vincente Fernandez “Por Tu Maldito Amor” and  "El sonidito" by Hechizeros Banda. Mariachi can be looked as “The repertoire is quite diverse, including rancheras, waltzes, polkas, cumbias, corridos, huapangas and son jaliscience, among other styles (Pg.364 Nettl. Rommen).  Performing a Vincente Fernandez track in an environment where the history of Mariachi was made created a magical moment for the fans of Aoki but also a new stepping stone of what mashups of different music genres can do.  According to Nettl and Rommen’s explanation of Marichi explains in details what the importance is, "Using metaphors of women to reference both actual, physical relationship as well as the relationship to nation, land, and region is very common in the repertoire.”  Ranchera is explained a Mexican song genre with rural and working-class associations (PG.364 Nettl. Rommen).
Itunes defines Hechizeros Band as a"regional Mexican group" which track “ El Sonidito” album made their name known. Vincente Fernandez is known as the “Sinatra of Ranchera music” according to Sony Music.  Vincente’s performances of the lyrics that help the audience take a trip to memory lane along with the help of the musical instrumental help of the violins, trumpets and acoustic guitars.  "Eight musicians are often considered an ideal number of the Mariachi (Nettl. Rommen 364.)  Vicente’s biography on Sony music explains how his music destiny started in his hometown of Huentitan El Alto, Jalisco, Mexico.  Vincente learned a musical instrument playing the guitar at a young age and he started learning folkloric music with his mother.  Nettl and Rommen explain the national ideal of the ranchera, which was promoted starting in the 1930s and enshrined within mariachi repertory and was reproduced in a song film throughout the twentieth century.  Which is confirmed by Vincente’s biography on Sony Music, his mother took him to see films at a young age.  Steve Aoki’s choice of two well-known songs and mashing them up and performing it at an event Mexico surprised the audience and the fans sang and went along for the ride.
Robbert Van De Corupt known as Hardwell is a Dutch producer from the Netherlands.  He was born and raised in Breda, which he also shares a familiar sensation of Tij Michiel Verwest, also known as Tiesto, also grew up in the small town.  At a young age, passion for music he was asked from the most well-known music school in the Netherlands to drop out to continue music.  He created his own label since the majority of labels did not want to release his style of music.  Soon afterward he started producing, touring and taking on the world one music festival at a time.  Making a name for himself soon got him reaching his status of the breakthrough artist of 2012. In 2013 he was named as the number one DJ in the world as well as the following year in 2014 (DJ MAG).
In 2014 Hardwell was performing in Monterrey City Festival where his version of the song Suavemente, from Elvis Crespo.  Elvis Crespo is known for his merengue genre.  Martha Davis explains her perspective of merengue tipico as the “social-dance music, represented today by the folk merengue as a musical symbol of national identity, epitomizes the creolism of Dominican culture”.  Merengue is often used as an urban musical genre for example during a fiesta quinceañera. Davis states “merengue were composed for dance bands by composers seeking inspiration in rural, non-literate genres for the creation of songs and dances of the literate tradition with piano or band accompaniment directed toward urban audiences.  Although merengue is not a Mexican description, the Mexican ethnicity recognizes the genre and still uses it to continue their traditions in parties like a quinceañera.  For DJ-producer Hardwell to recreate this nostalgia moment to get his audience pumped up during his shows in a Latin American environment is great example producers can make the audience feel within the moment.  This example of the merengue song of Suavemente proves the importance of a producer’s current knowledge of the culture and the meaning to their fans.
Another example is when Hardwell started using the song Baile de Favela by Mc Joao within Brazil January 31st during the Federal music in Brasilia in 2016.  Brazil is known for its exotic music of tropical forest region.  Anthony Seeger explains the rhythms and songs of Carnaval (Carnival), "which dominate the popular music of the coastal cities of Brazil from November to February.  This pattern probably matches that of other national musical forms elsewhere in the region. (Seeger Pg.286).”  Nettl and Rommen explain Wayno (Huayno) as “the lyrics usually centered on humorous, romantic, or political topics, are rendered in Quechua or in Spanish, further underscoring the Amerindian and European contributions to this genre.   In the track of ” Baile de Favela" I do hear the distinguish patterns of the violins, voices, and Orquesta tipica (Nettl and Rommen 367).  Although for this specific track I do not agree with Seeger’s statement of “music plays an important part in forging and demonstrating community or ethnic identity and sociopolitical positions (Seeger 287).”  The translation of this track is a bit offensive; it explains of a male being excited to see a girl at a party and is excited to sexually seduce her.  It can be a positive perspective if you want to use this example to teach young ladies to have self-respect and not be sexually active at such a young age.
In 2015 Hardwell also did a version Nicky Jam’s reggaetón track, El Perdon. Reggaetón is music can be classified as Caribbean music due to the reggae tone described in Nettle and Rommen’s description  "the presence of musicians from various locations throughout the Caribbean in New York and their musical interactions and negations led to a new genre that has since found a home (and legions of fans) most urban centers of Spanish-speaking Latin America (PG.416) One form of reggae the Niyabinghi “ensemble consists of drums-bass, funde and askete also refashioning African roots.  This year during Hardwell’s Ultra set, he reintroduced Daddy Yankee’s Gasolina.  Reggaeton exists in both Panama and Puerto Rico.  Another form is (Plana) Spanish rap.  Ronald Smith explains "Panama borrowed from regions of the Caribbean. Puerto Rico has reggaetón and plena both forms of rap.  Panama’s plena has a similar rap style but are differ to Puerto Rico’s. (pg 245)”. Hector Vega Drouet explains how Puerto Rico’s plena originated in Ponce around 1900.  "At the beginning, sung texts were not associated with the plena, which were rendered by guitar, concertina, and tambourine; eventually, in 1907, singing was added (Smith 172).“ He also describes "change and often is played by an orchestra with large percussion section of conga, snare, and bass drum added to or replacing the tambourine (173).”  For DJ Producers like Hardwell to have knowledge of the culture of reggaetón, not only it adds to his groundbreaking music resume but also attracts fans who do not know the knowledge of plena.   Many are attractive by contagious reggaetón track beats, especially to any Latino-American audience growing up within the Latin culture.
Erick Orrosquiet known as Deorro within in the EDM community, Erick is of Mexican descent born and raised in Los Angeles. When he was seventeen he was making his own tracks and soon international producers were asking him to remix their versions.  The track “Five Hours” picked up and hit national and international wide in 2014.  In 2016 his most recent rework of Elvis Crespo track “Bailar” became a hit within the Electronic Dance Music World.  Elvis Crespo, Puerto Rican, known for his merengue sound.  Elvis’ most famous hits are “Suvamente” and “Bailar”.   Understanding the Latin American sound merengue, see Hardwell’s merengue definition.
Dillion Francis is an American DJ.  He uses another name as DJ Hanzel. He was born and raised in Los Angeles California.  His mother is Serbian and has an American father.  In 2010 he became famous after collaborating with the song “Que Que” with Maluca.  His fame rose higher once he made a track with DJ Snake, “Get Low” which was released in 2014.  In 2016 he released three new tracks and in 2017 he released new information in an interview with beats one, Zane Lowe. “I’ve been trying to work with all Spanish artists. I want to get the real soul of it.  I want to make the records really vibes and really fun and stuff that people haven’t heard before. Use different instruments people haven’t heard before and not go to nexus patches trying to use real instruments.”
For Dillion to be inspired to create an album that’s Spanish sound will be challenging but I know he’s passionate and will not stop until he’s made it perfect.  He will receive criticism since he’s not Latino descent but as long as he has the right knowledge of both the music Latin American instrumental culture and political history he will have the tools to make it legendary. In my previous short response, I explained how DJ Snake took a different approach to his inspiration R&B and hip-hop culture with a twist of EDM.  Music can emit negative and positive thoughts and like the chapter suggests, “Music’s capacity to profoundly transform consciousness is not only relegated to ritual and religious traditions.”  Religion and music are two different worlds but to some, a combination of both can bring comfort and peace to those who stay open-minded.  Nettl and Rommen’s findings state that music Tatab can heighten a state of emotion that can be described as musical ecstasy. The different types of music genres within dance music people are connected not only with the music and lyrics but are also having a connected spiritual impact.
I see this future for Dillion to make a name for himself.  It’s going to be important for an American DJ-producer not only to create new groundbreaking music but to show the fans of the United States that Latin American music should be cultured and respected; especially during these times of difficult times of political history showing discrimination repeating itself within the Latino culture in the United States. I believe Dillion Francis will use the knowledge and tools of both the history of Latin American instruments and political history which both are crucial to know to fully understand the music of any genre by creating a positive movement in his career by teaching the world of Latin American Music regardless which genre he chooses.
“Music must be considered a potent political tool.  Over the centuries, governments have harassed, censored, banned exiled, jailed, tortured, and killed composers and performers from widely different social classes ( A. Seeger pg.72).”  I agree with this statement since today’s current American political view is being under surveillance throughout the world with its current president.  It seems that history seems to repeat itself even with the facts in front of us.  The harassment with certain ethnicities and the public reacting with violence or protests continue throughout the world. Seeger’s statement of “music is a social resource that can communicate statements of identity and attitudes.”
I agree since musicians have the power to help unite and spread love and positive vibes throughout the world.  There are festivals like Ultra (Miami) and Tomorrowland (Belgium) that take place in different parts of the world the help create an environment where people are there for the love of music.  "Musical performance has been shown to be a resource for expressing the identity of and differences of gender, age, kindship, social class, ethnicity, religion, political persuasion, and nationality (Seeger Pg.73).“ It’s important for DJ Producers to connect with their fans during their sets, especially if the DJ is aware of the cultural environment.  In fact not only it unites the fans with their producers closer but for a fan that’s curious about the meaning of the music their listening to.  They can do research on the music’s history and the cultural background.  That’s a beautiful objective to teach fans different historical genres of music.
