Tigerland (2000, Joel Schumacher)
27/03/2024
Tigerland is a 2000 film by Joel Schumacher.
In September 1971 a group of recruits undergo training before being sent to Vietnam. The training consists of a perfect simulation of what the boys will face in war, and takes place first at Fort Polk and then in Tigerland, a Louisiana swamp very similar to the Vietnamese environment. Among all the recruits, the Rebel Roland Bozz stands out, allergic to the rules, who does not hide his anti-patriotic attitude at all.
Shot on a very low budget and with a handheld camera and in 16mm format. The actors did not have at their disposal make-up artists, hairdressers or any of the luxuries that actors are normally accustomed to. Filming lasted 38 days, from February to March 2000 in Florida.

Are you watching Masters of Air? I loved Band of Brothers and think it is one of the best series ever, but I didn’t like The Pacific much, unfortunately.
One thing what keeps shocking me is that most depictions of modern warfare are like: "OK! There are guys out there with very rapidly firing machine guns, so what you're gonna do, you're gonna run into that and fucking die, mmkay? And we're going to do that until they're overwhelmed, because ultimately, they can't shoot all of you. It's a gigantic game of chicken about who retreats first. Us, when they have too many guns. Or them, when we have too many people."
The Pacific is full of that, where in Band of Brothers there's at least some military tactics on display. It matters what they decide. They're not simply sent out to get riddled with bullets, and when they are, after Bastogne, that is shown to be because of terrible strategic misjudgment and tactical incompetence and sending in someone competent at the last moment matters.
And if they simply sent people to the Pacific to be mawed down, wave after wave, that's just depressing. If that's the situation, I massively prefer Tigerland, about a draftee that does everything in his power to get people out of the Army and back home. Because there is no valour in running into a hail of bullets and taking cover behind a shot comrade at best. The human component ceases to matter if you're nothing but a sack of flesh. And even if you are - who are all these madmen charging first? Your best hope is trailing behind and hoping they're out of ammo or tired. Band of Brothers is human smarts and strength against an equally strong opposing force. There's humanity in there.
I hope there is in Masters of the Air, too - I hope that being a good pilot could make a difference. If it didn't, the message is: "Whatever you do, don't enlist, and if they draft you, don't believe the bullshit about serving and hide. Treat it like an order to go to a relocation center. Don't. Don't go. Whatever they claim. Only fight if you're being invaded or if you're 100% ready to be just one of too many bodies to effectively repel with a machine gun. I mean it. Only do it if you would 100% shoot yourself in the head to harm the other side. Because your life is worth less to the higher ups than a cup of their morning coffee. Those Russian immigrants to Argentina have the right idea."
Important message, but not great entertainment. Because all the bonding in the world doesn't matter to a machine gun.
