I'm devastated. They just announced that PAFA is closing their college (degree earning programs) after this academic year.
While they're continuing the museum, certificate programs, commitment to K-12 arts programs and continuing education classes —the college and graduate degrees are ending.
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts is the first and oldest art school in the United States. And the college is closing.
So so many famous artists attended or taught at PAFA!! All kinds of them too! Thomas Eakins. Mary Cassatt!!!!! Mike Berenstain (son of Stan and Jan, who took on illustrating the Berenstain Bears!). Apparently David Lynch? Don Martin! Howard Pyle!! Barkley L. Hendricks! James Metcalf, Henry O. Tanner, William Rush, Sarah Peale, Anna Peale, Jessie Willcox Smith, Maxfield Parrish, Henrietta Myers Miller (known professionally as Peter Miller). Thomas Cole. Robert Henri. Cecelia Beaux.
(it is also the first and oldest museum in the US, which thankfully isn't also being closed).
I wish the US funded the arts better. The college deserves to be saved as an iconic and immensely influential american institution, similar to the Smithsonian network of museums — with government funding. Hell, congress people should be FIGHTING to bail out PAFA, sustain it and treat it as a PAFA-Smithsonian arts institute funded by the government. Or SOMETHING. :(
It's going to close after reaching 220 years.

TERRIFIER 3 | Teaser & Poster
Cineverse, in partnership with Bloody Disgusting, unveiled today the online teaser for Terrifier 3.
This development follows the recent announcement that Terrifier 3 will hit theaters nationwide on October 25, 2024.
During the re-release of Terrifier 2 in theaters on November 1, which came in at number 5 in gross box office, fans had the opportunity to catch the Terrifier 3 teaser. The teaser also revealed an intriguing twist—the upcoming installment will be Christmas-themed, adding an extra layer of anticipation for horror enthusiasts. In the third installment of Damien Leone’s breakout horror film, Art the Clown is set to unleash chaos on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they peacefully drift off to sleep on Christmas Eve.
The release date of Terrifier 3 is 2 years after its predecessor, Terrifier 2, which was released theatrically on October 6, 2022. The ultra-gory, 138-minute unrated film ravaged theaters during its highly publicized theatrical run, pulling in over $11 Million in domestic box office. During that time, Terrifier 2 found its way to mainstream press with Variety detailing how Terrifier 2 “became this year’s unlikeliest box office success” and how the film “is inspiring horror fiends and skeptics to go to their local cinemas in droves to assess the hype for themselves.” Terrifier 2 became CERTIFIED FRESH by Rotten Tomatoes and the movie even found its way onto Stephen King’s radar with the “IT” author Tweeting that Terrifier 2 is "grossin' you out old-school." The New York Times called Terrifier 2 “the little horror movie that could” while calling it “the most talked about horror movie this Halloween.”
Terrifier 2 marked the next horrifying chapter in the Art the Clown saga; in which the demonic killer, portrayed by David Howard Thornton, returns with a vengeance. Lauren LaVera became a breakout star and fans across the world embraced her as the next Final Girl. Terrifier veteran Samantha Scaffidi reprised her role as Victoria Heyes, and horror icon Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp) and professional wrestler Chris Jericho (AEW) made unforgettable cameos that had audiences talking.
Writer/Director Leone said, “Terrifier 2's remarkable success was driven not only by the insatiable appetite for new and thrilling horror icons like Art the Clown but also by its unparalleled theatrical release and marketing, along with its unyielding spirit. In a cinematic landscape where risk-taking is scarce, I will continue to push boundaries in Terrifier 3,and I can’t wait for you to see what’s in store for Art the Clown.”
Set one year after its predecessor, Terrifier 2 continued the gruesome story of Art the Clown and his insatiable thirst for murder. When a sinister force resurrects Art, he is once again upon the unsuspecting residents of Miles County. Back for another Halloween, Art sets his sights on a teenage girl and her little brother, portrayed by LaVera and Elliott Fullam, respectively, delivering a chilling and relentless tale of horror.
Terrifier 2 is developed by Dark Age Cinema and Fuzz on the Lens Productions and features an original score by Paul Wiley. The film is produced by Phil Falcone, Steven Della Salla, Jason Leavy, and Michael Leavy. The list of executive producers includes Cairo Ben Amen II, Joshua Anderson, Steven Caruso, Lisa Falcone, Hank Greenberg, Marcus McGill, Larry Bilello, Steven Barton, and Thomas Smith.

you should talk about Howard the Duck!!
okay okay okay
so today is the 37th anniversary of the howard the duck movie!! it's like.. a lot-
it's a really weird movie for sure I guess i should list the pros and cons. let's start with the cons so we end on a positive note :
cons
-it's really not a faithful adaptation. like the writers straight up pretty much admitted they don't understand the source material which is veeeeery questionable
-the movie just can't decide what age it's for. like it tries to be a kid's movie but there are too many weird sexual references for it (i guess nothing too blatant just duck boobs for a few seconds, Howard's weird duck condom, that infamous scene that ultimately never went beyond kissing and well okay the worst one is probably that weird bathhouse scene. i legitimately don't understand why that even exists.)
-the weird genre switch. it's SO out of nowhere and it's just.. a really jarring transition. one second you're watching a romcon about a duck and singer and the other second you're in a high stakes sci fi and you get basically no time to adjust you just have to accept it
-phil blumburt tends to be the most annoying man sometimes. and then sometimes he's just a funny guy. they can't decide i guess.
-THE FUCKING 7 MINUTE CHASE SCENE I HATE IT SO MUCH
-sometimes the duck puns can be a lot
okay but of course I don't hate this movie at all it's actually a big comfort for me so
pros
-Lea Thompson as Beverly Switzler is such a casting choice she SLAYS it genuinely changed my life her version of Beverly is the most iconic to ever
-also Chip Zien voicing Howard. can't get better than that. he's a damn good voice actor tbh. people say they wish the movie kept Robin Williams but tbh? they're cowards. Chip Zien Howard is best Howard i take no criticism
-the howarly plotline is definitely the heart of the movie and it's set up so well. it's a liiittle cheesy but it also makes me squeal every two seconds. they've got the angst the fluff and everything in between and you KNOW I'm a sucker for them! seriously they made a point to show how much they understand each other and care for each other and Howard basically makes it his life mission to fix all of Beverly's problems while Beverly makes it her life mission to protect Howard from this wirld that tries to hurt him and they're just so soft and i love them they have SO MANY big moments in this movie and it feeds me
-THE. MUSIC. OH MY GOD. between John Barry's score (the howarly leitmotif titled you're the duckiest is genuinely BRAINROTTING to me) and Thomas Dolby cherry bomb songs (ughhh they're all perfect) the music is such a strong point in this movie
-speaking of: cherry bomb!! they don't have a big part in the movie unfortunately but Ronette, K.C. and Cal are just so charming i want a sequel just focusing on the band without any of the alien stuff. i want more spotlight to my girls!! and of course also Howard and Beverly and even Phil but i need my girlies to get something!!
-this is bit of a minor thing but every single outfit Beverly wears is iconic
-there's some very explicit acab messaging and Beverly aims a gun at a cop <3
-just. the vibes. they're fun. i wish people would just accept this movie as a fun time instead of expecting some kind of deep philosophical whatever because then of course it will disappoint them! take it for what it is! because for what it is it's cute and fun and comforting! and i love it.

THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY
based on: The White Crane Institute's 'Gay Wisdom', Gay Birthdays, Gay For Today, Famous GLBT, glbt-Gay Encylopedia, Today in Gay History, Wikipedia, and more …
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1466 – Erasmus was a Dutch humanist and theologian, who merits serious consideration by queer people of faith. Born Gerrit Gerritszoon, he became far better known as Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam: Erasmus was his saint's name, after St. Erasmus of Formiae; Rotterdam, for the place of his birth (although he never lived there after the first few years of early childhood; and "Desiderius" a name he gave himself - "the one who is desired".
He left a legacy as a scholar and church reformer. His career spanned the years leading up to, and after, Martin Luther's break with the Catholic Church that became the Protestant Reformation. Prior to the split, Erasmus had himself been fiercely critical of the Church, arguing forcefully for reform of the many and manifold abuses. He had close relationships with Luther and many other leading members of the Reformation movement, which his ideas strongly influenced. However, when the break came, he chose to remain formally inside the church structures, and not outside of it.
Some LGBT activists have hailed Erasmus as a gay icon from history. Circa Club for instance has no doubt, using that precise term and including Erasmus in it's collection of historical gay icons. The primary basis of the claim is a series of passionate love letters he wrote to a young monk Servatius Rogerus. While at the Augustinian monastery at Stein near Gouda around 1487, Erasmus wrote passionate letters of friendship to the fellow monk, whom he called "half my soul", writing, "I have wooed you both unhappily and relentlessly"; this correspondence contrasts sharply with the generally detached and much more restrained attitude he showed in his later life. There were also allegations of improper advances made to the young Thomas Grey, later Marquis of Dorset, while employed as his tutor.
Erasmus's best-known work was The Praise of Folly, a satirical attack on the traditions of the Catholic Church and popular superstitions, written in 1509, published in 1511 and dedicated to his friend, Sir Thomas More.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1903 – British poet and novelist Evelyn Waugh was born on this date (d.1996). The English writer is best known for such satirical and darkly humorous novels as Decline and Fall, Vile Bodies, Scoop, A Handful of Dust and The Loved One, as well as for broader and more personal works, such as Brideshead Revisited and the Sword of Honor trilogy, that are influenced by his own experiences and his conservative and Catholic viewpoints. Many of Waugh's novels depict British aristocracy and high society, which he satirizes but to which, paradoxically, he was also strongly attracted. In addition, he wrote short stories, three biographies, and the first volume of an unfinished autobiography. His travel writings and his extensive diaries and correspondence have also been published.
The overt homosexuality of his brother Alec Waugh may have caused Evelyn to hide his own tendencies behind two marriages and seven children. Alec Waugh, like their father, publisher Arthur Waugh, had gone to school at Sherborne, and it was assumed that Evelyn would follow. However, in 1915 Alec was asked to leave, after a homosexual relationship came to light. He departed for military training, and while waiting for his commission to be confirmed wrote a novel of school life, The Loom of Youth, which was published by Chapman and Hall. The novel, which alluded to homosexual friendships in what was recognisably Sherborne, caused a public sensation and offended the school sufficiently to make it impossible for Evelyn to go there. Much to his annoyance he was sent in May 1917 to Lancing, in his view a decidedly inferior establishment. He later went to Oxford.
He arrived in Oxford in January 1922; in October 1922 the arrival of the sophisticated Etonians Harold Acton and Brian Howard changed Waugh's Oxford life. Acton and Howard rapidly became the centre of an avant-garde circle known as the Hypocrites, whose artistic, social and homosexual values Waugh adopted enthusiastically; he later wrote: "It was the stamping ground of half my Oxford life". He began drinking heavily, and embarked on the first of several homosexual relationships, the most lasting of which were with Richard Pares and Alastair Graham.
After gallantly protecting T. S. Eliot from "the specious assumption that he was homosexual," T.S. Matthews in Great Tom, suddenly became viciously ungallant: "It is peppery, glaring little men like Evelyn Waugh who are sexually suspect - as his diaries bear witness."
Indeed, his diaries do clearly reveal him as a Gay man. But then so do his novels, particularly Brideshead Revisited, in which the friendship of Charles and Sebastian, despite the limitations of what he was allowed to write in the early 1940s, is magnificently drawn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1909 – The Anglo-Irish born painter Francis Bacon (d.1992) was a descendant of the Elizabethan philosopher Francis Bacon. His artwork is well known for its bold, austere, and often grotesque or nightmarish imagery. Bacon's painterly but abstract figures typically appear isolated in glass or steel geometrical cages set against flat, nondescript backgrounds. He began painting during his early 20s and worked only sporadically until his mid 30s. Before this time he drifted, earning his living as an interior decorator and designer of furniture and rugs
Bacon early discovered that he attracted a certain type of rich man, an attraction he was quick to take advantage of, having developed a taste for good food and wine. One of the men was an ex-army friend of his father, another breeder of race-horses, named Harcourt-Smith. Bacon later claimed that his father had asked this friend to take him 'in-hand' and 'make a man of him'. Francis had a difficult relationship with his father, once admitting to being sexually attracted to him. Doubtless, Eddy Bacon was aware of his friend's reputation for virility, but not of his penchant for young men. In the early Spring of 1927 Bacon was taken by Harcourt-Smith to the opulent, decadent, "wide open" Berlin of the Weimar Republic, staying together at the Hotel Adlon.
His visit to a 1927 exhibition of 106 drawings by Picasso at the Galerie Paul Rosenberg, Paris, aroused his artistic interest, and he often took the train to Paris five or more times a week to see shows and art exhibitions.
In 1929 he met Eric Hall at the Bath Club, Dover Street, London, where Bacon was working at the telephone exchange. Hall (who was general manager of Peter Jones) was to be both patron and lover to Bacon, in an often torturous relationship.
In 1964, Bacon began a relationship with 39-year-old Eastender George Dyer, whom he met, he claimed, while the latter was burgling his apartment. A petty criminal with a history of juvenile detention and prison, Dyer was a somewhat tortured individual, insecure, alcoholic, appearance obsessed and never really fitting in within the bohemian set surrounding Francis. The relationship was stormy and in 1971, on the eve of Bacon's major retrospective at the Paris Grand Palais, Dyer committed suicide in the hotel room they were sharing, overdosing on barbiturates. The event was recorded in Bacon's 1973 masterpiece Triptych, May-June 1973.
In 1974, Bacon met John Edwards, a young, illiterate, handsome Eastender with whom he formed one of his most enduring friendships, eventually bequeathing his £11m fortune to Edwards after his death.
Bacon died of a sudden heart attack on April 28, 1992, in Madrid, Spain. Bacon bequeathed his entire estate (then valued at eleven million pounds) to John Edwards after his death. Edwards, in turn, donated the contents of Francis Bacon's chaotic studio in South Kensington, to the Hugh Lane gallery in Dublin. Bacon's studio contents were moved and the studio carefully reconstructed in the gallery. Additionally draft materials, perhaps intended for destruction, were according to Canadian Barry Joule bequeathed to Joule who later forwarded most of the materials to create the Barry Joule Archive in Dublin with other parts of the collection given later to the Tate museum.
Bacon's Soho life was portrayed by John Maybury, with Derek Jacobi as Bacon and Daniel Craig as George Dyer (with some lovely frontal nudity on Craig's part) and with Tilda Swinton as Muriel Belcher, in the film Love is the Devil (1998), based on Daniel Farson's 1993 biography The Gilded Gutter Life of Francis Bacon.

1949 – Caitlyn Jenner (born William Bruce Jenner), known as Bruce Jenner until 2015, is an American television personality and former track and field athlete.
A former college football player, Jenner came to international attention as a decathlete, winning the gold medal in the men's decathlon event at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, and setting a world record not beaten until 1980. With the unofficial title of "world's greatest athlete" for the Olympic decathlon win, he was also an American cult hero winning an event dominated by Soviet Union athletes during the Cold War. He leveraged his celebrity status to endorse products and subsequently starred in numerous movies and television specials including several made-for-TV movies, and was briefly Erik Estrada's replacement on the TV series CHiPs.
Jenner was married for 23 years to Kris Jenner (née Houghton; formerly Kardashian); the couple and their children appeared beginning in 2007 on the television reality series Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Following their divorce in 2015, Jenner came out in a television interview as a trans woman, initially preferring masculine pronouns until his transition was more complete. In June 2015, Jenner revealed her new name, Caitlyn, and a preference for being referred to using feminine pronouns. Many news sources have described her as the most famous openly transgender person in the world.
Tumblr media
Bruce Jenner that was.
Jenner is a professed Christian, leans politically conservative, and is a Republican. Prior to her public gender transition, she had been married three times. Her first marriage was to Chrystie Scott (née Crownover) from 1972 to 1981. They have two children, son Burton and daughter Cassandra, known as Burt and Casey. Jenner and Scott's divorce was finalized the first week of January 1981. The same week, on January 5, 1981, Jenner married actress Linda Thompson, in Hawaii. By February 1986, Jenner and Thompson had separated, and they subsequently divorced. They have two sons together, Brandon and Sam Brody, known as Brody. The two sons starred on the reality show The Princes of Malibu and Brody Jenner was also on the reality show The Hills.
Jenner's third marriage, to Kris Kardashian (née Houghton), occurred on April 21, 1991, after five months of dating. They have two daughters, Kendall and Kylie. While married, Jenner was also the step-parent to Kris's four children from her previous marriage to the late lawyer Robert Kardashian: Kourtney, Kim, Khloé and Rob. The couple announced their separation in October 2013, though they had actually separated a year earlier. Kris filed for divorce in September 2014, citing irreconcilable differences. Their divorce terms were finalized in December 2014 and went into effect on March 23, 2015, because of a six-month state legal requirement.
In an April 2015, 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer, Jenner came out as a trans woman saying she had dealt with gender dysphoria since her youth, and that, for all intents and purposes, "I’m a woman." Jenner cross dressed for many years and did hormone replacement therapy but stopped after the romance with Kris Kardashian in the early 1990s became more serious. Caitlyn recounts having permission to explore her gender identity on her own travels but not when they were coupled, and that not knowing the best way to talk about the many issues contributed to the deterioration of the 22-year-long marriage which formally ended in 2013.
Tumblr media
1990 – Placido Domingo and Andre Watts raised $1.5 million at a fundraiser for the Gay Men's Health Crisis.
Tumblr media
2008 – Gus Van Sant's Harvey Milk biopic premiered to a star-studded audience at San Francisco's Castro Theater. Milk would go on to win various Oscars at the 2009 Academy Awards.
Tumblr media
2009 – President Barack Obama signed the The Matthew Shepard Act (officially the "Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act") into law. The Act expanded the 1969 United States federal hate-crime law to include crimes motivated by a victim's actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. It was finally passed after almost two decades of attempts to pass it through Congress and over stiff opposition by members of the Republican party. During debate in the House of Representatives, Republican Representative Virginia Foxx of North Carolina called the "hate crime" labeling of Shepard's murder a "hoax."

“Miami Vice:” The Pilot Episode
When “Miami Vice” premiered in Sunday night prime time on NBC September 16, 1984, Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas were fledgling thirty-something actors, each with credits in film and television, and Miami a midsize Latin American resort city and port on Florida’s southeast coast.
By the time the show went off the air five years later, the two men were household names and Miami had become an internationally known destination and bona fide cosmopolitan metropolis.
Tumblr media

When the two part, two hour pilot episode titled “Brother’s Keeper” was broadcast in the early 1980s, Miami had garnered the notorious reputation as one of America’s most dangerous cities, with one of its highest per capita murder rates.
Beside the 1983 University of Miami Hurricanes football team winning its first national championship under head coach Howard Schnellenberger, Miami had few draws to outsiders for the city and surrounding Dade County and its one and a half million residents, with ongoing racial strife, a thriving drug trade, and a sudden influx of hundreds of thousands of immigrants fleeing nearby countries like Cuba and Haiti amid ongoing political and economic instability.
It was against this backdrop that NBC executive Brandon Tartikoff greenlit the flashy crime drama of “MTV cops” in Miami, making it among the most expensive new television shows at the time.

By the time the show’s second season premiered in September 1985, Johnson and Thomas, who played Miami cops James “Sonny” Crockett and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, appeared together on the cover of a Time magazine issue which dubbed the program, “Cool Cops, Hot Show,” and its theme song topped the Billboard Hot 100 that November.
The first episode introduces viewers to supporting players Saundra Santiago (Gina), Olivia Brown (Trudy), Michael Talbott (Stan), and John Diehl (Larry). Miami Police Lieutenant Marty Castillo, played by famed actor Edward James Olmos, debuts in episode six, replacing Gregory Sierra of “Sanford and Son” fame, whose character is killed off in the fourth episode.
The first scene is set in a dilapidated Miami Beach on Ocean Drive, and the episode goes on to showcase panoramic views of Dade County’s beaches, Biscayne Bay, and a growing Miami skyline.

A nighttime driving sequence with Crockett and Tubbs in a black Ferrari Daytona set to Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight” became as iconic as the clothes the buddies wore, and was the beginning of a trend that made the show and its two stars leaders in men’s fashion toward the latter end of the decade.
With a screenplay manifested by legendary filmmaker Michael Mann, the pilot episode of “Miami Vice” transformed the show’s namesake city, the careers of Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, and the landscape of television forever.

Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns the name of the most notable and iconic champion to come out of Detroit’s Kronk Gym, the legendary and intimidating birthplace of some of the most talented prizefighters ever.
Hearns was provided with the opportunity for greatness by competing in the Golden Age of the legendary ‘Fabulous Four’ alongside Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and Roberto “Hands of Stone” Duran. These men dominated 1980’s boxing, cementing themselves in boxing folklore with their historic encounters in boxing’s last truly great era.
However, Hearns would have been a stand-out great in any era. His warrior mindset, destructive nature, and phenomenal talent would have made him a force to be reckoned with in any era in boxing history.
Hearns was born on 18 October 1958 in Memphis, Tennessee. His mother, Lois Hearns, a single parent, moved her family to Detroit, Michigan, when Hearns was five. Young Tommy began boxing at age 10, becoming a renowned amateur hailing from Emanuel Steward’s Kronk Gym.
“The Motor City Cobra” had a stellar amateur career with a record of 155-8, having fought the likes of Aaron Pryor, Howard Davis Jr, Bobby Joe Young and Ronnie Shields. He won the National Amateur Athletic Union and Golden Gloves titles in 1977, the same year he laced up his first pair of gloves in the paid ranks.
Once Steward taught Hearns about the benefits of leverage and the proper technique to generate power, how to use his 6-foot-1 inch height and 78 inch reach to devastating effect, that demonic long right cross of Hearns started wreaking havoc, and ‘The Hitman’ was born. Hearns hit as hard as any welterweight that ever lived.
With a piston-like jab, he had one of the best ‘sticks’ in boxing history. "That jab is a thing of beauty, it’s not just fast, it's hard too,” said Leonard when reflecting on their iconic first fight.
With the famous decimating right hand which came behind the jab, Hearns was utterly formidable. There was also the laser-guided precision and fast-twitch explosiveness, which made his jab, right cross and hooks to the body all the more devastating with the speed, power and accuracy at which they were delivered.
Moreover, his boxing ability was elite. Hearns was more than just a power puncher. It was his pure skill and ring IQ which enabled him to compete as a world-class light-heavyweight.
Hearns was a truly phenomenal fighter. Athletic, tall, and powerful. His slim body frame, coupled with his style, made him a unique fighter who became a true all-time great.
Hearns turned professional in November 1977 with a second-round knockout victory against Jerome Hill. Hearns’ first 17 opponents failed to hear the final bell before Alfonso Hayman managed to last the 10-round distance in April 1979. Over the next year, Hearns blazed through the welterweight division, going through men such as Harold Weston, Bruce Curry, Angel Espada, and Eddie Gazo.
With a record of 28-0 with 26 KOs, Hearns’ first title shot came against long-reigning WBA welterweight champion Jose Pipino Cuevas in August 1980.
Cuevas was the champion for 4 years with 11 title defenses and ten knockouts under his belt. This fight was unlike anything the untested Hearns had faced before, or so they expected. The fight concluded, and Hearns was still untested. The Hitman’s power, speed, size, and ranginess proved too much for the long-reigning, dominant champion, scoring a 2nd round KO.
Hearns was voted Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year for 1980.
In 1981, the much-anticipated classic billed as “The Showdown” between Leonard and Hearns took place for the undisputed welterweight championship.
Heading into the bout, Hearns had left behind a venomous trail of destruction with 30 KO’s in 32 fights.
Leonard won via TKO in the 14th round, inflicting Hearns’ first professional loss in one of the greatest fights of all time, showcasing two in-prime all-time greats displaying their greatness in an ebb and flow of dramatic action.
Even in defeat, Hearns was a winner because he showed everybody he was more than just a slugger who could bang. He had heart and great boxing skills. Leonard was perceived as the superior boxer by far. However, Hearns used his jab to out-box Sugar Ray for long periods of their fight. Hearns had his immense toughness and unbelievable courage contained in his lean, long frame preventing him from crumbling in the seventh round when Leonard was teeing off on The Hitman and battering his hurt opponent from pillar to post. An ordinary man would have been bed-bound for a month after taking the beating that Hearns took in rounds six and seven, but Hearns is no ordinary man.
Nobody realized how much of a great boxer Hearns was, more so than Leonard. Speaking to Ring Magazine, Leonard recalled: “I don’t remember anyone being superior to me with their feet, but Tommy used his feet in our first fight. His height and reach, plus his movement, gave me problems. I said to myself, “This son-of-a-bitch can box too.””
If it wasn’t for Leonard pulling off one of the greatest victories in history, Hearns was capable of dominating at 147 pounds for a long time, until the point when he would outgrow the division. Hearns had appeared unbeatable, knockout power in either fist on the end of his tremendous reach. Leonard’s win on this night was truly great and pointed more towards Leonard’s standing as one of the true all-time greats of boxing and the greatness of one of the most complete fighters in history rather than any deficiencies on Hearns’ behalf.
For a man who has also beaten Hagler, Duran and Wilfred Benitez, Leonard stated years after his retirement in an interview with The Independent regarding beating Hearns, “I think that was my defining moment, the pinnacle.”
That is true testament to Hearns’ ability and what it takes to have beaten a peak, Hearns.
Following his first loss, aged only 22, Hearns moved up to have three tune-up fights at middleweight before challenging defensive genius WBC super welterweight champion Benitez. Hearns used his rangy jab and underrated boxing ability to control Benitez and win a majority decision with some room to spare, and then embarked upon a period in his career when he staked a serious claim to be the greatest super welterweight in history.
Hearns made three successful defenses of his title, which included a coldcocking of one of the toughest men to ever enter a boxing ring, the iron-chinned Panamanian legend Duran, in two rounds. Hearns was the only man to ever knock Duran out during the Panamanian’s legendary 30 year professional career. A harmless double jab to the body to disguise the savage overhand right, one of the greatest scored in history, which shockingly left the always-granite chinned Duran face flat on the canvas. After this, Hearns’ standing and reputation had fully recovered from his first professional career loss to Leonard.
Hearns was again awarded Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year for 1984.
Having dispatched Duran and with Leonard ‘retiring’, there was one man left for Hearns to face and determine the king of boxing, and that was ‘Marvelous’ Marvin Hagler.
Hearns moved back up to middleweight, and they shared the most exciting and action-packed three rounds in boxing history.
The Hitmans’ unforgettable battle against the undisputed middleweight champion, accurately named “The Eight minutes of Fury,” is on everyone’s lips when talking about the most action-packed, mesmerizing wars ever.
Hagler detonated a final right to the chin of Hearns in the third round, and the fight was over.
Hagler later referred to that fight as ‘the very highlight of my career’.
Hearns lost to Leonard, the best welterweight since arguably the greatest fighter in history, Sugar Ray Robinson. There has not been a better welterweight than Leonard since. The other man to defeat Hearns was Hagler, and there has arguably not been a better middleweight than the ‘Marvelous’ one since he hung up his gloves, either. During his prime, Hearns only lost to two all-time greats, the best to compete in their divisions, who adapted their styles to put up career-best performances in order to defeat Hearns, and both felt a victory over ‘The Hitman’ was the highlight of their legendary careers.
Hearns proceeded to stop Dennis Andries to become WBC light heavyweight champion in 1987 before dropping back down to middleweight in the same year and ensuring that victory over Juan Domingo Roldan meant Hearns became WBC middleweight champ, becoming the first four-weight division champion in history.
Hearns’ legend was established, but he did not stop there.
In 1988, Hearns also became the first five-weight division champion in history when he defeated James Kinchen to win the vacant WBO super-middleweight title.
He ultimately became a six-weight division champion, from welterweight to cruiserweight, in a career that spanned an incredible 29 years, from 1977 to 2006.
The fighters that Hearns defeated to become champion in six weight divisions were Cuevas, Benitez, Andries, Roldan, Kinchen, Virgil Hill, and Nate Miller. Other men that Hearns fought included Leonard (twice), Duran, Hagler, Iran Barkley, and Bruce Curry.
Quite simply, Hearns’ accomplishments and resume stand amongst the best in history and make him a bona fide boxing legend.
What makes Hearns so adored by boxing fans is that he accomplished what he did whilst being one of the most exciting fighters in history, win or lose.
Hearns once said: “My thought was always to make sure the fans got their money's worth when they saw me fight. I never wanted anybody to say Tommy Hearns gave a bad show.”
Mission accomplished.
Hearns is one of the greatest, most uniquely gifted, and entertaining fighters to ever enter a boxing ring and his achievements, along with his lasting bond with Leonard, Hagler, and Duran, will never be forgotten.
