Series writers stop taking meaningful things from the comics without giving your characters the same thoughtful storylines

i hate this i’m all in a fuff about game of thrones bc the new series is airing and i’m EXCITED bc i’m a desperate book loser who’s LOVED this story for like 9 years and i just want to know! what happens! and i can’t even get that from the show except mayybe very broadly speaking because the fuckheads making it hate the books and have completely changed (and as a result DESTROYED) almost every important AND unimportant character/story arc in the entire show! like....how!?!??! the books are all written! it’s all right there already written! and as a bonus they’re written WELL!! and they still couldn’t manage it! alksdjnf i love asoiaf sooooo much and i am SO salty bc i don’t hate game of thrones (even though i should!!!), i was thrilled by the first season and watched as all the actors were cast and was so excited to see everything come to life and it was about as good as could be hoped for, i loved the cast, loved the music, and certainly had some quibbles but it was mostly tolerable stuff (Ros. Jesus christ why. Tyrion’s introduction in the show...STILL fucking pisses me off it’s so stupid but was indeed good foreshadowing of what utter fuckwits D&D are) but then....they never recovered from the mistakes they made in series two when they proved themselves totally incapable of handling the LARGER (IE THE ACTUAL) story they’d taken on. :/ The structural changes/mistakes they made in series two have basically carried through the entire show and just gotten worse and worse and worse with each series up to series 6 which was...slightly improved in watchability if nothing else. Like these are major (MAJOR!!) character arcs they've RUINED just off the top of my head lmao

JON SNOW. Oh my god I can’t it breaks my HEART man! I fucking love Jon to DEATH!  Also tbh Kit Harrington is not a good actor. 😩

DANY. Emilia Clarke is so so soooooo horribly miscast it physically pains me. They obviously cast her solely based on Dany’s arc in S1 (by far the most compelling part of her story in the show) and wholly neglected to consider the range her actress would require to portray her in future seasons. That and they can’t write for shit, as we know. S2 and S4 are especially disastrous.

Catelyn. This was like one of the earliest signs, when they sidelined Catelyn, one of the most important POV characters, to make HER story about fucking King Robb, that these dudes were morons who either did not understand or actively disliked (actually both tbh) the source material lmao. And cutting Lady Stoneheart? Unforgivable. Lunacy.

Bran. I genuinely think they hate Bran and are among the obnoxious segment of readers who consider his (very! important! representative!) character arc as “boring” bc they use him purely for exposition and as a supplement to Jon’s arc? wtf is wrong with them?

Jaime. They’re actually insane for the shit they’ve done with Jaime’s character lmao, like Jaime’s character is about redemption and identity, his entire arc is about him DETACHING and growing AWAY from Cersei and beginning to see himself as a whole person APART from her! oh my god. also they made him a rapist? Unforgivable.

Sansa. The butchery of Sansa’s arc is a lot more subtle than the others until they marry and rape her in S5 for shock value but literally the way they hobble her arc in King’s Landing is absolute bullshit lmao. They give her basically no character development for 3 whole seasons bc they spent so much time fucking around with characters like Margaery and Olenna and Loras and the Tyrion/Shae relationship but then she’s whisked away by littlefinger and all of a sudden becomes an Exceptional and savvy liar who can read people and play their hallowed Game with ease. They are fucking morons.

I can’t even talk about the Martell’s lmao. Oberyn is one of the best, most magnetic non-pov characters in the books and a) he’s horribly miscast and b) they turned him into an absolute JOKE!! I don’t need to go on about the sand snakes bc i refused to watch past ep2 of S5 and enough people have done that already lmao, they made the whole of Dorne into an extremely racist and disturbing JOKE. The changes they made to the Stannis/Renly/Melisandre characters/arcs left gaping holes that FUCKED the rest of the show lmaaaoooo is2g season 2 was truly their absolute structural downfall. Stannis and Renly are colossally miscast and I fucking can’t stand the way Melisandre was written, she’s literally just played as this abhorrent manipulative mole, and Stannis as her fanatic fool. 😩 Arya’s arc didn’t fair quite as badly but it's been heavily watered down. Her time at harrenhal and journey across the riverlands is probably the most harrowing part of the entire story you can FEEL her losing herself, like, the scene of her kill in ASoS is UNFORGETTABLE, but in the fuckin show the whole time it’s just like, Arya and Friends on some more Shenanigans, now with some sexual violence in the scenery. I’ll never forgive them for the shit they did with Ramsay and Theon. Like of everything they’ve done Ramsay is probably ACTUALLY...the very very worst of their abhorrent decisions. LIttlefinger is such a stupid character like, they reduce him from a savvy and unreadable but INTERESTING piece of shit businessman with investments ALL OVER the country to the piece of shit owner of this ONE SPECIFIC brothel that he micromanages and apparently uses as his ~base of operations~ lmao so they have an excuse to fill the screen with softcore porn at every opportunity. oh my god they lose so much ground in littlefinger’s brothel with worthless scenes and exposition at the start of s2 i literally wanted to strangle them. all their dialogue makes me wanna strangle them lmao (HOW??? when Martin they have so much good dialogue to work with???). basically the only character who’s arc they don’t unutterably destroy is Ned, and that’s only because he dies before they get the chance.

Basically game of thrones is a terrible show, save yourself and avoid at all costs, unless you wanna read the books in which case ENJOY the hell.
