ok so im trying to avoid having emotions about the shitshow that is the local elections so i dont yknow breakdown and ive been meaning to make a post for ages abt muriel’s route i have so many thoughts. obvious spoilers ahead not that i have more than like 2 followers who play arcana game
firstly....i was kinda underwhelmed with the second half/ending of his route. disclaimer i haven’t replayed it and haven’t got the reversed ending, only upright, and my memory sucks and i played it a while ago. SO, things that I....don’t understand:
1. SUCH a massive deal is made out of muriel (and MC) having to learn to fight, the plot literally hinges on it, only for it to swing off the plot all together into oblivion and for the final showdown to be....a series of literal games.* And I wouldn’t disagree with this as an ending tbh!!!! I think it’s fucking great actually -- a non-violent resolution to further signify Muriel’s journey from violence and isolation to peace and fun and family, and tbh sort of a massive fuck you to lucio; LITERALLY RETURNING to the coliseum only to BEAT Lucio WITHOUT returning to the violence that lucio forced on him, turning it into a place of actual joy. Like fuck!!  BUT with the whole first part it just doesn’t fucking fit lmao? Muriel could have faced his demons in the beginning without learning to fight at all, he still could have had that journey. Morga could have just traveled with them right? Or even better he could have refused to fight and then the ending would have been even better. We could have had a moment of Morga acknowledging their strength??? Acknowledging their non-violent victory WITH PRIDE??? Bringing her to reflect on her choices as a mother and a leader??? Devs why couldn’t we have had that :(  I may be remembering wrong but the apparent necessity of Morga teaching them to fight is the biggest source of tension for at least a book. It’s the reason for his first kiss with the MC!  Also yeah speaking of tension with Morga
2. SUCH a big deal is made out of morga becoming/reflecting as (?) a mother figure to muriel (which in itself is a very bold way to go story-wise)....only for her to be killed off. Again, I don’t disagree with this decision, I like her but story-wise it could fit. But I can’t help feel like it was really premature. This is something I feel all routes suffer from, and perhaps I am expecting too much from a game that can be played for free very easily, but every single route has pacing problems, none more than Muriel’s imo. Considering the maternal aspect of Morga (for both her and Muriel!) is sooooo fucking loaded and intense like, you cannot drop that and then kill her and not really mention her for the rest of the story. Her “ghost” made an appearance sometime later and a few sentences were said and that was it. Her and Muriel’s past was so brushed over  and idk clearly they didn’t have the time or money or whatever to develop it which is a real shame. Their journeys could have run parallel or gone in opposite directions literally anything but Morga dying in a moment of weakness from a cheap trick by lucio :/ bc YEAH like that was not actually weakness but certainly what morga considers weakness!!! that mistake could have split her away from muriel+MC entirely OR brought them closer together. she could have been disgusted with herself and decided once and for all to let go of lucio as a son and go her own way to destroy him, or she could have woken up to what she can do differently now and work with Muriel and co and let go of lucio that way. idk man it was just a waste
Right then....onto the romance. or. lack of :( this is completely subjective, I know some people were v happy with it but like, this could not have been a drier route and im so fucking sad about it. There were definitely some sweet moments, but that was sort of it for me. I get what they were going for, but it’s personally sad to me that Muriel’s contentedness seems to have come at the expense of sensual intimacy/tension. like there was just absolutely no spice whatsoever. I saw someone describe the MC relationship as basically platonic and...yeah. Very little intimacy that wasn’t like, cuddling or holding hands, which since there wasn’t much to build on anyway just came across as nice but unexciting. It felt like it became too easy and too normal too quickly?  Naturally touch was such a precious and important thing in the beginning as Muriel was learning to trust, but that just did not get explored imo. The first kiss wasn’t...the worst, but it was sort of OOC to me. They could have got so deep with that first kiss -- the opportunity, the trust, the choice. “Happy accident” scenarios can be great and definitely could have worked for his story, but for the first kiss i was like oh ok we’re here now?? and..muriel’s ok with that considering we were just uhh sobbing about his forced servitude and violence?? idk how i haven’t mentioned it yet but the way the tone was all over the fucking shop in that book gave me serious whiplash. Anyway  it’s so disappointing bc c’monnnnn this whole relationship is brand new to BOTH mc and muriel.  At the start every touch is a small turning point and i think they did that so well, you feel excited at the development and where it will go, but then it’s like “ok well we’re together now so everything is easy and breezy”. you can create emotional tension (the good kind) through touch EVEN if they’re both ace. which the MC is not bc its the self insert character so. yeah. i feel like im probably being a bit harsh in retrospect but this is what has stuck with me.
This leads me to Muriel himself, and what to me was the biggest opportunity to do blow everyone’s minds bc he was SUCH a mystery before his route. Dark and brooding but shy and caring, anti-social through anxiety and fear but lonely, his reluctant but consistent support of Asra and his friends. And that was all teased in the beginning! ....and then completely fell flat. Similar to my first point: they had some deep emotional development going, Muriel literally coming face to face with the past he never knew, and the past he wishes he could forget, learning to actually be around people, learning to trust people (and ngl i fucking loved the beginning stages with MC so much), and overcoming his anxiety and pessimism. He and MC literally travel together alone for weeks. WEEKS! And much of that is skipped by. We have big emotional scenes but not much in between. And then...and yknow im not sure where it changes...after khamgalai dies? (and dont get me started on that what the fuck was the point of THAT?) after MC goes to the arcane realms? I can’t remember but at some point it’s like...all tension is gone lmao. Including tension between MC and Muriel, and he becomes quite two dimensional. It was just rushed.  Vesuvia is in ruins, Nadia and co chased out of the palace, Lucio taking control etc but like...it doesn’t feel like it matters? Im really not saying that his route has to be all doom and gloom at all but don’t MAKE it doom and gloom and then do a 180 yknow? I remember Julian’s route in particular being so fucking tense, even though I knew I got the upright ending, that dinner scene was...phew. (and i do get that naturally the first 3 routes are bound to be a more exciting experience bc i was less familiar w the game etc but still, there was just 0 tension).
im not even gonna talk about the MC’s past reveal bc i have issues with it in every route so whatever
so yeah i love muriel and i still like the arcana but it’s writing and pacing is just so inconsistent and it makes me sad. I will continue to fanon Muriel’s route to death.
*It’s occurred to me that the reversed ending may be more violent and actually fit with where the story seemed to be going in the start, but I stand by the opinion that it doesn’t matter because it still doesn’t make sense. I shouldn’t have to play the reverse ending to be like “oh ok that was the point of that” bc it should make sense and serve purpose in both endings, which i dont think it does.

Apartment AU Chapter 7: You Could Call It Luck
Hello! I don’t remember my usual format for posting fics on here so please bear with me. Anyways this is that chapter I had sitting in my drafts forever and couldn’t bring myself to finish it or post it because a. motivation is broken and b. I’m a full time student and it be like that. It’s not 100% my favorite writing but please enjoy!
Read it on AO3: Here!
Adrien was pretty much entirely convinced he was going to get fired, no matter whose son he was. The morning had played out terribly; he was stumbling over the other model, posing unnaturally, and despite his best efforts, his smile looked more like a grimace. The director of the shoot was furious, to say the least. Despite how many times he told Adrien to take a break and clear his head, Adrien continued to make mistakes he hadn’t made since he was a teen.
He couldn’t stop thinking about Marinette.
He couldn’t figure out why he was so hung up on what had happened the night before. Sure, maybe it seemed like she could potentially be using him to get to his father, her being a designer and all, but there were people who had done much worse. Men and women alike who had tried to get close to him to advance their modeling careers, and people who had tried to sabotage him. He had even had anonymous death-threats sent to him and his father.
Thinking back, he was pretty sure none of them had bothered him as much as this.
At his break for lunch, he took the opportunity to text Chloé back after she had sent him an incomprehensible drunk text that night. It wasn’t unusual, and often times he would reply to them during the day when his hangover had subsided.
1:43AM Chloé: drieen this guy i wnet home with was terible just liek terribleeee god how lame
1:43AM Chloé: thtat the last time i go home with a MAN
1:44AM Chloé: its onyl ladies from here on out babeye!!!!!!!
12:10PM Adrien: uh Chlo, i have no idea what any of these mean
12:10PM Adrien: “babeye” ?
12:12PM: Chloé: i don’t know what you mean, those are TOTALLY readable
12:12PM Chloé: the guy i went home with last night was a huge bore and i’m swearing off men forever, duh
12:13PM Adrien: ooooh okay yeah that tracks
12:13PM Chloé: anyways how is work? i’m suffocating over here, i have like 400 meetings in the next 2 hours
12:14PM Adrien: uh it’s not great honestly, i’m totally out of my mind here
12:14PM Chloé: did you drink too much last night? adrikins i told you to stay away from tequila
12:16PM Adrien: no, i just have something on my mind
12:16PM Adrien: or, i guess, someone on my mind
Adrien watched the small bubbled that indicated she was writing continuously disappear and reappear on the screen as Chloé typed out and deleted her messages at a rapid rate.
12:18PM Chloé: WHAT? WHO? TELL ME WHO THEY ARE
12:18PM Chloé: ADRIEN AGRESTE YOU TELL ME RIGHT NOW
12:18PM Chloé: is it someone i know?
12:19PM Adrien: she’s just someone in my building, and it’s not like that
12:19PM Adrien: i’m pretty sure i made a huge mistake last night and freaked out at her without giving her a chance to explain
12:19PM Adrien: and now i’m pretty sure she’s pissed at me
12:20PM Adrien: pls help :(
12:20PM Chloé: omg
12:20PM Chloé: i like wouldn’t even stress about it, just like say you’re sorry and flirt with her or something
12:21PM Chloé: you know, like really turn on the charm
12:22PM Chloé: like idk buy her something with diamonds in it or something, poor girls love diamonds, like you can even have some of the ones i’m giving away (they’re so last year but she probably wouldn’t be able to tell)
12:23PM Chloé: omg hold that thought i’ve got to go, they need me in this meeting! let’s meet up later for dinner! ciao sweetie xoxoxo
Adrien stared at his phone for a while before signing and slipping it into his bag. Chloé had the best intentions (usually), but she wasn’t great with advice. You know who would give really great advice in this situation, he asked himself. Marinette. He shuffled back to the studio and prepared for another four hours of botched photo shoots. His hatred of the work he did only increased with the number of mistakes he made, and he almost wished they would fire him.
What seemed like an eternity passed, and finally Adrien was able to leave work. He met up with Chloé at their usual place, a high-end club that, thankfully, also had a quiet bar area where the two could chat. Chloé was already sitting at their usual table when he arrived, tapping away at her phone and sipping a gin and tonic.
“Hey Chlo, who ya textin?” He gave her a quick peck before sliding onto the stool across from her.
“I was completely serious when I said I was swearing off men, Adrien. I’m texting this cute girl I met at one of my events a little while ago.” She shot him a smug look and continued texting. “I’m never even looking at another man ever again,” she huffed. “Except you, of course, but we all know you’re off limits.” She said in off limits a breathy voice, raising her eyebrows. “It would be gross to even think about it.”
Adrien chuckled. “You’re right, that would be gross. Even though you were so in love with me when we were 14,” He snickered.
Chloé practically shrieked. “Ugh! I told you never to talk about that again! How embarrassing,” She shook her head. “I was just convinced I liked you because I didn’t know any better. Now I know that I’m way out of your league.”
Adrien laughed again. “Alright, alright, you make a fair point. You’re totally out of my league,” he said, humoring her. The playful tone of his voice was not convincing, but Chloé chose to drop the subject altogether.
“So, who is this mysterious person you’re having trouble with? What could you have done to piss her off so badly?” Chloé put down her phone on the table for the first time since he had arrived and looked at him intently.
“Ah well... you know how everyone is always trying to get close to me so they can meet my dad or get some kind of modeling gig, whatever it is really. Well... I kind of accused her of trying to do the same thing, which now that I think about it, I really doubt she was. She’s a designer, and I saw a flyer for my dad’s competition on her desk, so I sort of freaked out?” Adrien shrugged, looking embarrassed.  “I had also been drinking, which didn’t help. I mean, when I told her who I was she seemed genuinely surprised that it was me, but seeing the flyer made me immediately assume she had the worst intentions for being my friend. You know what I mean?” He was sure Chloé knew exactly what he meant. She was staring at him with a look that was practically dripping with sympathy.
“I know it’s hard sometimes to let people in because we’re afraid they want to use our status, but if she didn’t even know who you were before, maybe it was a misunderstanding? I don’t know anything about the girl and frankly I don’t like the idea of you hanging out with a designer,” Chloé made a face. “But I think if it’s really bothering you, you should ask her what her side of the story is first, and then you can talk it out.”
Adrien stared at Chloé. “Chlo that’s actually... Really solid advice, thank you.”
She gave him a smug look and shrugged her shoulders. “What can I say, I’ve matured a lot since we were kids. It’s you that needs to grow up now,” she pointed at him with a mocking tone, but the look on her face was one of brutal honesty.
Adrien knew this was true, of course. Chloé had, apart from her party habits, matured far more than he had since they were teens. He had always considered himself a pretty level-headed kid, and only realized later that there was so much more bubbling beneath the surface of his feeble good-boy model persona than he knew. He was angry, and he was bitter, and he was going to have to change that.
——————
It was a little past midnight when Adrien finally made his way back to the apartment building. He was glad that, instead of dancing and drinking at the club like they usually did, he and Chloé had stayed up late at her house, marathoning movies. It was just as they had done as kids, except instead of the rare soda their parents would allow them, they sipped on wine.
The landlord was long asleep when he walked through the lobby. He climbed the stairs to the apartment building quietly, careful not to disturb his neighbors. Most nights he would stumble up the stairs in a stupor after partying without worrying about how loud he was being, but tonight any of the wine he had had at Chloé’s was well out of his system. He felt strangely nervous tonight, being back in the building. It wasn’t because Marinette lived there, although he was nervous to see her again. It was an anxiety he couldn’t quite put his finger on—something just didn’t feel right, and he couldn’t tell if it was his sobriety that was the cause of his discomfort, or something amiss in the building.
He was so deep in thought as he walked up the stairs that he almost passed the second floor without noticing that the door to apartment 204 was slightly ajar.
Marinette’s apartment.
That’s strange, he thought, slowly making his way closer to her door. This… isn’t right. She’s not the type of person that would leave her apartment door wide open.
He felt the hair on the back of his neck raise as he heard shuffling coming from beyond the door. A knot formed in his stomach as he carefully pushed the door open as quietly as he could. It was completely dark inside, and the muffled shuffling continued, now accompanied by voices coming from somewhere further back in the small apartment.
A sharp scream pierced through the darkness.
Adrien rushed in.
—————
Marinette had come home earlier after some light errands. She had forgotten, in her giddiness earlier that day, to pick up some supplies for one of her latest projects. It was one of her best pieces, really—a soft, delicate dress made of some of the most difficult material she had ever worked with. She was hand-stitching the beading into the top of it, through shear, light fabric, and had the bottom flow out and behind the legs, nearly resembling the tail of a jellyfish.
It was almost ten now, and she planned to pull an all-nighter to finish the dress so she could show it to the design team she was working with the next day. Humming softly, she made her way up the stairs to the second floor, thankful to finally be back at the apartment. She balanced her bag of materials in one hand as she fumbled with her keys. When she went to unlock the door, however, she noticed something odd. There were strange scratches around the keyhole, ones she didn’t think were there before. She inspected them for a moment, wondering if she had accidentally scratched the door, or if Adrien trying to get into her apartment that night did the damage. Putting the thought aside, she opened the door and stepped into her dark apartment, leaving it ajar behind her.
“Tikki! I’m home! Here, pretty kitty!” She said loudly into her apartment as she flicked on the light to the entryway and placed her purse in the closet. She passed the bathroom door and clicked on the light in the living room. Panic rose in her chest.
There was only silence.
The fact that Tikki didn’t come when she came through the door signaled to Marinette that something was very wrong. She always came to her, mewling enthusiastically at the return of her dear owner. She needed to leave, she needed to go find help. There was someone in her apartment.
Slowly, Marinette backed up, careful not to make any sounds. Her eyes darted around her small apartment: bedroom light is off, kitchen light is off, no one is in the living room.
The bathroom.
Marinette whipped around just in time to see the face of her assailant as he knocked her unconscious.
Marinette woke up in the dark. She was still in her own apartment, on her own bed, with all of the lights turned out. At first she thought she had dreamed being knocked unconscious, but as she awoke she realized that her mouth was taped shut and her hands were tied behind her back. She laid still for a moment, assessing the situation. She had been knocked unconscious, and now she was being held captive in her own apartment. Panic gripped her and she thrashed about in the bedding, crying and struggling to break free. She looked around frantically in dark for anything that could cut her free. If only I really did keep a knife under my pillow, she thought absently.
She heard a sound in the darkness that made her freeze.
“Shhh, Marinette. Struggling won’t help you, sweetheart,” the voice cut through the dark and sent chills through her spine. A figure cloaked in shadows stood in the corner of her bedroom. “I’ve been watching you for some time now, and I know no-one will come to help you at this hour,” The figure cooed.
Marinette tried to speak, but though the tape came strangled noises instead.
“The baker’s daughter, so sweet and innocent. It was love at first sight. The first time I stepped through those doors I knew instantly that you had to be mine.” The figure came closer, stepping into a small patch of moonlight that came through her bedroom window. “But you never even saw me, not even when I was standing directly in front of you.”
Marinette caught a look at the figure’s face in the moonlight. He was vaguely familiar as a regular at the bakery, but she had never had more than a couple casual conversations with him about the pastries or the weather. He was right—she had never noticed him. He was unassuming, and out of the hundreds of people that had passed through her parents’ bakery while she worked there, she hardly even remembered him.
She would now.
He stooped next to her, clicking on the light at her beside. The sudden brightness made Marinette flinch. He grabbed her by the shoulders and, against her struggling and crying, sat her upright on the bed.
Caressing her face with the back of his hand, his bland face cracked open wide with an eerie smile.
“You are so beautiful up close,” he cooed. “When you stopped coming in as often, I grew tired of waiting for you. I didn’t know how to live without seeing your face every day. You broke my heart.”
He stood up. “I know you’ll come to love me too, Marinette. I’ll do anything for you, anything you would like. I’ll take care of you as soon as you agree to come with me.” He gave her a sympathetic look. “Those bindings aren’t very comfortable, are they? It hurts me to see you like this.” He thought for a moment.
“If you promise not to scream, I’ll take the tape off you mouth? Let’s have a talk.” As he said this, he pulled a knife out from behind his back and held it firmly in his hand.
Marinette had been scared before, but at the sight of the knife she recoiled, shaking violently. Tears streamed down her face as a million thoughts raced through her mind. She thought about Ayla and Nino and how she needed to design the clothes for their wedding. She thought about the projects she hadn’t done yet. She thought about all of her friends, scattered about Paris now, years after school had finished. She thought about her parents, just down the street, asleep in their beds.
Among all of these thoughts came a quiet plea for help. Please, she thought. Please, anyone. Please save me. She thought of him.
In an inexplicable instant, she knew that he would come. There was no denying the feeling in her gut that he was nearby, that he was going to come by her apartment, maybe to apologize, or maybe just to pass by on his way to his own apartment. Whatever the reason, she knew; you could call it fate,
You could call it luck.
She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. He’ll trust me if I seem calm, he’ll trust me if I comply. She nodded, and the tape came off.
Adrien, please.
She screamed.
It all happened so fast. Her bedroom door slammed open, revealing a disheveled Adrien, green eyes sharp with anger.
He lunged at the intruder, grabbing his wrist and pushing him against the wall. The man struggled out of his grasp and leapt forward at Marinette, who was sitting stunned on the bed. Adrien quickly grabbed the man from behind, and Marinette could have sworn his eyes were glowing a piercing green. Spinning him around and slamming him into the bureau across from her bed, glass bottles were sent crashing to the floor. He snarled into the mans face like a wild animal.
“Don’t you dare,” He panted, his voice strained and rough with anger. “Touch her.”
The man panicked, slashing out wildly in front of him, but Adrien was too quick. A sharp pain shot through his arm as he felt the knife graze him, but the adrenaline in his system won out, and he moved with trained speed.
Grabbing the arm he had just tried to strike him with, Adrien pulled it behind the man’s back and, and sweeping him off his feet, he slammed him face down on the ground. Grabbing the closest blunt object he could find, Adrien hit him across the back of the head, hard enough to knock him out but not hard enough to to any serious damage. He scrambled around the room, searching for something to tie him up with, eyes settling on a phone charger thrown carelessly on Marinette’s bureau. After making sure he was tied up securely, Adrien’s full attention was on Marinette.
He rushed over to her, panic and concern written across his face. Using the knife, he freed Marinette’s hands and helped her remove the tape from her mouth. “Are you hurt?” He asked, looked her over several times.
At first she seemed paralyzed, sitting stiff and dazed, blue eyes wide and wet. She looked at him, searching his face for a moment. He saved my life, she thought numbly. She realized that he was shaking.
All at once feeling returned to her, and she crumpled into him, sobs wracking her body.
“I w-was so stupid!” She sobbed. “My door!” Was all she could say.
“Shh shh, it’s okay now Marinette.” He wrapped his arms around her and buried his face in her hair. “I’m sorry I didn’t get here earlier.”
Marinette looked up at him, tears still dripping down her face. “You shouldn’t be apologizing, stupid alley cat. You came at just the right time.” She tried to smile, but it quickly turned into a grimace. “I thought I was going to die. I really…” She trailed off. “Thank you, Adrien.”
It was his turn to cry. Tears welled up in his eyes as he looked down at her, and he pulled her in close once again. His voice cracked as he spoke.
“I was so worried about you, the minute I saw your door open I knew something was wrong,” he said, his voice muffled by her hair. “I’m so sorry about getting angry at you, about the thing with the flyer. I didn’t even give you a chance to explain yourself, and I said all of those things…” Adrien hugged her tighter.
“I know you didn’t mean it Adrien, I know,” She said, reaching up and stroking the hair out of his face. “We can talk about this, but first, we should really call the police.” She gave a half-hearted chuckle, still shaking with fear.

Felix Jaehn: Don’t Worry, Be Happy.
Felix Jaehn Interview.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ever since he charted at number one in more than fifty-five countries with his remix of OMI’s Cheerleader, the platinum-selling DJ and music producer Felix Jaehn whose real name is Felix Kurt Jähn has captured the attention of the international Electronic Dance Music community.
youtube
Jaehn, who started his DJ career at only age sixteen and has now accrued more than 2 billion streams (and counting), has made him one of the most sought-after DJs in 2019. His last single So Close, a collaboration with the Swedish duo NOTD, songstress Georgia Ku and Los Angeles-based trio Captain Cuts continues to simmer at mainstream Top-40 pop radio.
youtube
The German producer was recently in the BPM Supreme-Nexus Lounge Miami during Miami Music Week to promote his latest single with Alok and The Vamps called All the Lies. And he was very impressed with Nexus Radio host Adam Turner’s pronunciation of his last-name.
Adam Turner: This is Adam Turner here in the Nexus Lounge in Miami on Miami Beach and I’m joined by Felix Jaehn, how are you?
Felix Jaehn: Hey Man, what’s up? Thanks for having me.
Adam Turner: Did I pronounce your surname right?
Felix Jaehn: You did, I’m quite impressed. Like, there aren’t that many people who get it right [laughs].
Adam Turner: Is it German?
Felix Jaehn: It is German. We have the […], “a” with two dots on top of it. You don’t have that in the English language. That’s why a lot of people get confused.
Adam Turner: Where in Germany you from?
Felix Jaehn: I’m from Hamburg originally and now I live even further north by the sea in like a really small village, literally 80 people live there.
Adam Turner: So, how is your Miami (going)?

Felix Jaehn: It’s great. I love it. It’s actually the first time I’m in the warmth this year. I’ve been in Europe most of the time this year and it’s been freezing, so I’m enjoying the sun. I’m enjoying wearing shorts and I’ve actually been to the beach as well. The first day we got here, I woke up jet lagged at 6:00 AM and I called my photographer. I was like, ‘sorry to wake you up, but let’s go to the beach, watch the sunrise, take some epic shots and go for a swim.’ It was beautiful.
Adam Turner: Amazing. I mean, you’re not going to get that much of a chance to do that in Germany, so why not do it while you’re in Miami. How long are you here for? Are you here all week?
Felix Jaehn: I’m leaving on Friday, so tomorrow.
New Music.
youtube
Adam Turner: Are you going to play anywhere?
Felix Jaehn: I did an appearance together with Alok who’s also going to be here in a bit. We have a single out together, it’s called All The Lies, so that’s why I came basically, to promote that record.
Adam Turner: Fantastic. Let’s jump straight in. I’ve got five questions for you. So, what are the five essential things that you carry in your DJ bag?

Felix Jaehn: USB sticks, headphones, ear-savers (ear plugs), […] a generation of MacBook that I need a USBC to USB adapter [laughs]. It’s always in there.
Adam Turner: It sounds like a big bag [laughs].
Felix Jaehn: That’s just four (items on the list) though, isn’t it?
Adam Turner: Sorry. Yeah, you’re right. One more.
Felix Jaehn: ..and then (pause), that’s it. That’s all I need (pause) really [laughs]. I just need four things.
Adam Turner: What is your favorite Emoji?
Felix Jaehn: My favorite Emoji at the moment is the rocket. Because that’s like my vibe, let’s go to the top!
Adam Turner: I like it!
Felix Jaehn: Let’s skyrocket! Let’s go to the top!
Don’t Worry, Be Happy.
Jaehn, who came out publicly as bi-sexual to a German newspaper recently, shared a few words to live by “Don’t worry, be happy.”

Back then I spent weeks looking for the right music for my birthday party with thirty friends. I knew exactly what time I wanted to play each song. I thought about how to build the vibe so my friends would hopefully dance. Today I still do the same. For thirty thousand sometimes! This pic just made me remember how far I've come. It's over nine years ago… but I still have the same passion!
A post shared by FELIX JAEHN (@felixjaehn) on Dec 19, 2018 at 5:41am PST
Adam Turner: If you had a time machine, Felix, where would you go? Which decade would you go back to?
Felix Jaehn: I think I wouldn’t go back.
Adam Turner: You’re going to go in the rocket forward?
Felix Jaehn: No, I was going to say I wouldn’t go back very far. I think I would go back to my childhood actually.
Adam Turner: When was that?
Felix Jaehn: I would go back like 15 years ago now, when I was like nine years old and just tell this little kid that everything’s gonna be okay, and don’t worry, and just be happy.

I had a chat with @attitudemag!
Tumblr media
'Before releasing and touring his debut studio album, I, Felix finally took a break from his hectic schedule and decided the time had come to come out publicly as bisexual. Inspired by contempories like Troye Sivan and Olly Alexander, he did so in February this year, telling a German newspaper he was ready to find "the person I want to share my life with, man or woman.“ Nine months on from that announcement, Attitude's Will Stroude caught up with Felix […] to find out how his life has changed for him since, and how the search for Miss or Mister Right is going…'
A post shared by FELIX JAEHN (@felixjaehn) on Nov 4, 2018 at 2:43am PST
Adam Turner: Who do you stalk the most on Instagram?
Felix Jaehn: I don’t know. Who do I stalk? I don’t really stalk people. Like, there must be someone (thinking that) I ‘stalk’ right? Like, nobody believes me [laughs]. I must say, I don’t stalk [laughs].
Adam Turner: You know, when you hand over your phone to someone like ‘oh! Look at this on Instagram’ and they look at the who like the top follower is…
Felix Jaehn: Let me see who’s on top right now. It’s usually the artist that I collaborate with at the moment because I want to stay up to date with what they’re doing. I don’t use Instagram privately a lot because…..yeah, it’s NOTD at the moment, we have a song out together, it’s called So Close. There you go! [laughs]
Adam Turner: Oh! By the way, that’s an amazing record! I’m a big fan of it, it’s really good. I heard it on the radio in L.A. just last week.
Felix Jaehn: Sick! I heard it on the Uber here last night and I was really happy. Like, I asked the Uber driver ‘Do you like this song?’ I went all in.
Adam Turner: Last one (question) on the Take 5. What career path do you think you would have gone down if you didn’t do music?
Felix Jaehn: I would have gone down a business career path, but I think I would’ve realized quite soon that it’s not the right thing for me to do because I would have done it just because that’s what my parents do.
And if music [does not] work out anymore at some point, which I don’t believe (so) because I’m doing great, and I have so much music coming up, and I don’t want to stop. But I would like to become a youth care worker at some point, and just work with kids and hopefully inspire them and share my values and all of that.
2017, Sorry, 2019 And Beyond.
Adam Turner: That’s fantastic! That’s Take 5, now tell me, what is 2017 (look like)? You’ve got a track out of the moment…
Felix Jaehn: 2017? Is that your time-machine vibes still going on [laughs].
Adam Turner: I don’t know why I did that, what is ….
Felix Jaehn: Why would you like to go back to 2017? What happened that year that you love it so, so much? [laughs]
Adam Turner: That year was quite good for me. I was happy with that (year)…. 2019, what’s going on for you this year?
Felix Jaehn: It’s a lot of music basically. Like last year… everybody always says line [laughs].
Adam Turner: Yeah, they do.

Felix Jaehn: But last year [I was] songwriting so, so much. I’ve been to L.A. for two weeks, London two weeks, Stockholm two weeks. I do songwriting camps at my little village in Germany and I invite songwriters to come over.
And, what’s new for me? I’m also co-writing all the songs and I’m involved with (lyrically). Even though I’m a DJ-producer, I try to make the songs as personal as possible. So, my next single is going to be about self-love for example. All those things that [were] going on in my head growing up […] I try to bring them into my songs and share the vibes.
He’ll Be Back.
Adam Turner: Fantastic, that sounds great. Are you going on the road? Are you deejaying? [Where] are you playing?
Felix Jaehn: Yeah, I’m playing a lot. I’m actually going to Dubai next week, then it’s Tokyo, Bali coming up. A lot of European shows, then there’s actually some U.S. shows confirmed already as well: San Francisco, Las Vegas. And in September, we just blocked off the entire month to do a U.S. Tour. I’m going to be here all September and I’m going to try to go everywhere!
Adam Turner: Fantastic! It sounds like you’ve got a crazy 2019.
Felix Jaehn: Yeah, it’s going to be big.
Adam Turner: Yeah, it sounds great! Felix, thank you so much for joining us in the Nexus Lounge, have a great Miami, and I will come and ….are you spinning this week?
Felix Jaehn: No, I don’t have another show coming up here.
Adam Turner: Did you play already?
Felix Jaehn: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Adam Turner: Damn! I missed it.
Felix Jaehn: But we’ll be back!
The interview.

[Breeds] Looking for a dog for our young family via /r/dogs
[Breeds] Looking for a dog for our young family
Looking for a dog that would like hiking and would enjoy living in our London suburb mid-terrace house with our 2 year old son and our cat. A rescue would be wonderful if we could make it happen.
Introduction
1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?
My wife and I both had medium sized dogs growing up (a retriever and a some sort of lurcher mutt). We both remember our parents training them and are pretty confident we'll do okay. My wife dog-sat for neighbours as well
2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?
We'd love to rescue, but with a toddler (2 yr) and a cat we may be out of luck. The dog homes here in the UK are notoriously cautious. Would love recommendations on how to handle them and adopt the right dog!
3) Describe your ideal dog.
Cheerful and playful, safe around kids and grandparents. Ready to play fetch or wrestle a bit. Perhaps a bit smarter than the average. Doesn't need to run constantly, but will happily come along with us on hikes around 10 miles.
4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?
Some spaniels seem like a good balance of this. Considering schnauzers, bigger terriers or beagles as well, though I'm not sure how well they hike.
5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?
I'm not fussed about tricks, but it would be super useful if it was comfortable traveling on public transport. Fetch would be great but plenty wonderful dogs won't even let you near their sticks.
6) Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?
No thanks
Care Commitments
7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?
We don't expect to do much training beyond basic obedience, housebreaking and public transit. In the post-covid world at least one of us will be working from home every week day so they won't get lonely, but we will need to work during that time so a dog needing constant attention would be a problem.
8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?
We are expecting as much as an hour's walk including a dog park in the morning, with a shorter walk in the evening. Plus running in our back garden during the day (~30 meters), and longer walks at weekends.
9) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?
We would happily do the grooming as necessary and there are plenty of professionals in our area. I think we lean away from the truly hairy breeds, but more guided by their comfort in our climate.
Personal Preferences
10) What size dog are you looking for?
Probably small to medium. We love large dogs, but while our house is decent size for London it is not huge and will need to be shared with 2 adults, a toddler and a cat.
11) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?
Slobber and shedding is fine and fun and part of dog life. Barking we are less keen on (and we also have neighbors with whom we share walls)
12) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?
The dog will have to be able to behave itself at a basic level to handle parks and country walks. I would say this is probably pretty important.
Dog Personality and Behavior
13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?
Probably medium? Love having a dog that puts their head in our lap and tries to lick our face. But again we will need to work from home around them, so yapping until we pick them up could become a problem.
14) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?
I like anywhere on that spectrum, though perhaps not fully aloof. I would say it's more important that they are able to relate to kids. Guess would probably be more eager to please, but not really sure.
15) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?
I'd rather they be open to strangers. Having a dog with a guard mentality might be tricky in a mid-terrace house with neighbors close by. Barking a bit when someone knocks is fine, but they should accept people when we bring them inside.
16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?
I don't think that's a good idea. Just too many around here.
17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?
Avoiding too much barking is probably the main one. We can manage if they turn out to be yippy (you never know) but we are keen to be kind to our neighbors.
Lifestyle
18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?
One of us should be working from home every weekday and we will be around weekends. I would say that it would be good to be able to leave them for half a day sometimes, but we should be able to get people to look in on them if it's longer than that. We have good neighbours and friends locally who could help.
19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?
Us two adults are both very keen. We will see about our toddler as he ages but mostly seems fine.
20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?
We have a rescue cat (normal british short-hair) whom we have had for 3 years now and is about 5 years old. She has a cat-flap and we are planning to keep the dog out of at least a room or two to help her.
21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?
Yes, being good with our kid and their friends is essential.
22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?
We own and are planning to stay.
23) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?
London, UK. There are laws about breeds which are said to be violent.
24) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?
Summer hovers around 20°C most days, but gets up to 25-30°C, almost never more than that. Humid but not muggy. Winter is not below freezing all that often. A week or so of light snow in total is not unusual, but fairly mild overall.
Additional Information and Questions
25) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.
We would really love to rescue a dog, but are not sure how we could do that since we have a toddler and a cat. Rescue charities here are very restrictive and we have so far not seen any dogs listed as ok for both small children and cats. Should we just give up on this approach? Is there anything we should try?
26) Feel free to ask any questions below.
I loved my mutt growing up. I recognize breeders would probably not call any of their dogs mutts, but is there any way to let breeders know we would be interested in, let's say unconventional cross-breeds?

A Day in the Life of Samantha Michelle, a Toronto-born DJ Who’s Opened For Mark Ronson
“About five years ago I plugged in my iPod at a party. Next thing I knew I was DJing, and next thing I knew I was playing Glastonbury at a secret garden party.”
Samantha Michelle’s life has taken her all over the place, figuratively and literally—studying religion and foreign policy at NYU, acting in plays and learning about European cultural history at Oxford, running a vintage shop in Toronto (where she grew up), writing and directing her own short films, and most recently, DJing at high-profile gigs and developing a female-focused film festival in New York.
“Opening for Mark Ronson for the Wall Street Journal at their Cannes Lions closing party was amazing,” she says of her favourite recent gigs, when I meet her over tea at a Toronto cafe. “I DJ’d at Drag on Queen here in Toronto—I got to open for a bunch of drag queens, which was really fun. I also work a lot with the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York. I did a CBGB tribute show for them and Debby Harry turned up. I was like, do I play Blondie in front of Blondie? I think I should!”
Aside from DJing gigs, she has directed two short films (her most recent, In the Campfire Light, will be premiering at the Ojai Film Festival in California in November) and is part of the creative team behind Female Voices Rock, a female-focused film festival that will hold its inaugural edition in New York in October. Here, a behind-the-scenes peek at a day in her very busy calendar.

8am Every day is so different, which is one of the things that I love about it, but on average I get up around 8am. I live in New York now, but I’m probably only there about half the time. (I travel a lot and also come to Toronto around once a month, which is great because it’s where I’m from and I get to see my family and friends.) So I get up around 8 and usually go and get a coffee or a tea—I used to be a smoker but I quit smoking six months ago so I still need to go through the morning rhythm of the walk to just get fresh air, see what it feels like outside. I try to avoid Starbucks as much as I can; it’s nice to go to independent places. There’s a great place called Newsbar near me, in Greenwich Village, which I love. Then I get home and open my laptop.
9am I normally do about an hour or so of emails, phone calls, text messages, just catching up on stuff. As creative director of the film festival, I’m managing our partnerships, so I’ve been doing a lot of outreach to different women’s organizations through people in my network and the film world who care or can help spread the word. I’m also in post-production on my film which again is all really working from home—phone calls, emails with different people and the team. I like working from home because I’m on the road so much. I’d say most days I’ve not had a shower or put on any makeup until maybe 2, 3, 4 in the afternoon.

11am I typically work on playlists in the mornings. It gets me too excited—if I try to do it in bed at night I won’t sleep. I get really jazzed about it, so it’s something I’ll normally do in the mornings before I work out.
Noon After that I usually will go to the gym, or do a yoga class or do Pilates or something. If I don’t feel like working out I will go for a long walk and call my dad and he’ll be walking the dog in Toronto, and I’ll be going in circles around Washington Square Park.

2pm Then normally I’ll eat. I’m not a very good cook, but I’m a total creature of habit when it comes to food, so I’ll go and pick up an omelet from Grey Dog. I live really close to an independent equivalent of Whole Foods and they have big salads and stuff. Sometimes if it’s a slower-paced day and I have time to make a salad at home I will, but usually I’m just picking something up.
3pm In the afternoon I’ll usually have a couple of meetings. I tend to try and make my meetings in the afternoon as much as I can so I have an uninterrupted morning at home. For the film festival, I’m also working on amazing sponsorships so there’s a lot of back and forth emails, meetings and conversations with different write-ins and partners and people who want to join the coalition, and just managing all of those relationships.

6pm If I’m not DJing I usually see friends and I like to do stuff like go to the movies, go to the theatre, or go for dinner. My friends and I really like this place called Fish on Bleecker Street in the West Village. They do a really great wine and oysters special. I love ordering in too. Because I’m out so much, there’s something so nice about getting breakfast delivered to you at 11 o’clock at night (I often eat dinner quite late). I love the movies, I take myself to the movies all the time if I just feel like getting out. I love going to the theatre, that’s one of my favourite things. I recently saw this fantastic play called What the Constitution Means To Me which is a one-woman show about how the constitution has failed to serve and support women. It’s phenomenal.
8pm If I’m DJing, I’m pretty low maintenance when it comes to getting ready. If I spend more than five minutes on my makeup, I’ll just keep on putting on more eye-shadow or more blush or whatever, and then the next thing I know I’m like, uh, what happened to my face. And I hate looking like I’ve been too made up; it feels really un-me.
In terms of what I’m wearing, I’ll never make a decision until it’s five minutes before I leave the house. Comfort is really important, so I don’t wear shoes I can’t walk in or clothes that are too tight. I never want to feel like I want something to be over, just so I can be comfortable again. I love super tall shoes but I won’t wear high-heels that are flat under the toe, because I just feel like I’m going to fall over. So wedges were life-changing for me. I think my style’s quite ’60s and ’70s-influenced, so I like big tall wedges, silky flowy things, colourful things. I like things that are a bit androgynous, like a pantsuit. I have tiny boobs, so I take absolute advantage of it and wear crochet tops and dresses strategically pinned together with safety pins.

9pm I make a really conscientious effort to make sure that at least one night a week I just have no plans and hangout with myself and do whatever I feel like with myself, usually it means sitting on my sofa eating vegan ice cream and watching TV. I wander into a different space creatively in the evenings because I’m not getting people texting and emailing me. So this is the time to write, and work on scripts, and read and just dream things up in my head.

BDaMan's Show Log: Go 953's Shut Up And Rap (10/25)
Tumblr media
*The following events take place on October 25th, 2018.*
1:35am - After what seems to be not only a long day, but stressful day - I'm finally winding down for the night. Only thing left to do - cue up an episode of one of my go-to shows. Options are between King Of The Hill or The Bernie Mac Show. Choices, choices...
1:43am - Bernie Mac it is! And it's a choice I don't regret!
7:27am - Up and at 'em, getting ready for work. Gonna be an interesting day at work, I can feel it. As I think about it a bit, I'm gonna have to be a bit smarter today. My coworker/homie, Jeff is rolling with me and giving me a ride to Modist Brewing, but is working until 5. I normally work 9:30-4, so I'm gonna work 10:30-5 today to still get my usual hours in. That being said, it's time for some cereal and more Bernie Mac Show!
9:47am - Sometimes, I easily miss a bus if I leave just a minute or two too late. That was the case with my normal route. However, today, I managed to catch the freeway bus (the 535 for my Metro Transit friendly peeps) and am now on my way!
11:23am - Time for my usual phone check of the day while at work! One of the texts I get is from my big bro, B.Allen. He asks if I'm ready for today. I tell him the truth, that I'm low key nervous but I think I'm ready.
1:35pm - Jeff has arrived to work and him and I briefly chat about tonight's performance. Again, admittingly I'm nervous for multiple reasons. Our supervisor Melvin asks if I have a show tonight and I let him know that I'm performing tonight for Shut Up And Rap. As I figured by his hilarious facial expression when I asked if he was gonna make it, he won't be able to make it tonight, but he did wish me luck.
1:50pm - A few more co-workers wish me luck as well, as some saw me post about it on Facebook this week.
3:13pm - As I finish up my lunch break, I discovered that the judges for tonight are gonna be DJ Bonics, Mr. Peter Parker and Ander Other. I've been a fan of Peter Parker since the B96 days, so my nervousness just shot the hell up lol.
4:43pm - Off work, now we head to Modist Brewing! But first, we make a couple of pit stops. First back to Jeff's place briefly, then to Walgreens to get quarters.
4:57pm - Time to get a rough run through in. Jeff and his roommate, Ryan are watching a little bit of South Park. Perfect time for me to get into my own headspace.
5:12pm - Probably a quarter way into my typical performance zone. Hopefully the good luck text from my lady helps a bit.
5:42pm - Getting cash back is always so awkward if you need exact change. We're on our way!!
6:01pm - Back road travel all the way to Modist is an interesting journey thus far. One thing on my mind is that I always get in my head about is a lack of support at performances. I love all the support I do get via text/in person/etc., I just get really disappointed by not having the same support at shows as others. That being said, I'm trying to deflect from those thoughts and focus on putting on a dope performance.
6:31pm - Fresh in the parking spot and we've arrived! It's weird being on the other side of the fence in terms of being a performer for Shut Up And Rap vs. a spectator.
6:46pm - Auggie 5000 and $aibot have arrived! Shook up with Auggie and told him thanks for the opportunity. Also got to chat with $aibot briefly. Looks like I might be performing somewhere in the middle or close to last based on what $aibot last saw from votes.
6:55pm - After listening to a classic Ric Flair promo, I'm finally near where I should be. It's on now!
7:14pm - Se7en is up now. With him as the first one up, it sets the tone for the night.
7:20pm - The big bro, B.Allen has arrived! Hearing the feedback from Bonics, Peter Parker and Ander Other has me nervous as fuck.
7:42pm - With B Dot here, along with Jeff, I'm feeling better knowing that I have some support system here to back me up here.
7:49pm - Braylo Waves is up now. He's got a unique vibe to him.
8:04pm - Antonio Fixx is up now. I really dig this guy's energy!
8:20pm - Auggie announces that I'm up next before playing some music before my performance. Time to get some fresh air quick and get my last minute hype in. B Dot comes outside to check in on me quick. As much as he wasn't trying to accept his credit to how far I've come as a solo artist because of him, I thanked him for helping me grow through our S.O.S performances and always striving to be better. I'm hoping my performance will give him a well needed spark.
8:26pm - Another one in the books! Much love to DJ Bonics, Peter Parker and Ander Other for their props and feedback. Their feedback definitely made me feel better about choosing "Infobahn".
8:44pm - $aibot killed it!! Last week's champ, Solo Star is up now. She's icy with the bars!
8:53pm - Yo, I'll gladly take the L tonight. Solo Star absolutely killed it. 2 time champ! Much respect to her!
9:07pm - The night has ended and damn - despite me not winning, I feel real good about my performance. Got to shake up with Auggie and tell him thanks again for the opportunity, as well as get some final words in with Peter Parker and some props and constructive criticism. Shoutout to Jeff for strongly encouraging me to submit for this week. Shoutout to the big bro, B.Allen for coming out and showing some brotherly support. And shoutout to Weather Check (Mono, Ross and Trevor) for showing love. Time to get back into the swing of the music and just create!

How to Write Good Instagram Captions (With Lots of Examples)

How to Write Good Instagram Captions (With Lots of Examples)
Writing good Instagram captions is hard.
I mean, it’s easy coming up with funny captions for your personal account. After all, your friends and family don’t really care too much about what you write.
But once you start using Instagram for your business, it introduces all kinds of things you need to think about, from the types of captions you share to emojis, hashtags, mentions, calls-to-action, and sponsored content.
To help get you started—or kick-start your existing efforts on Instagram—I’ve put together this handy guide to writing good Instagram captions.
Let’s dive in!
How to #write good #Instagram captions, with examples Click To Tweet
Why are Instagram captions important?
“Um,… Last time I checked, Instagram was a photo-sharing platform…”
Yep, Instagram is all about sharing beautiful images. But don’t be fooled into thinking your words don’t count.
Writing good Instagram captions is incredibly important. They give your images context, they let you show off your brand’s personality, connect with your audience, and compel followers to take action.
Feel like getting outside and stretching your legs this weekend? Consider taking one of our new guided runs for a spin! You set the pace, we’ll be the guide. Head over to the link in our bio to get moving on the Headspace app.

There’s also a lot to say about the power of storytelling. Our brains are hard-wired for stories. We tell stories when we catch up with friends for drinks or relay a funny joke at dinner.
Stories engage people, drawing you in and help users make sense of brand’s and products that at first might be confusing or feel overwhelming.
On Instagram, images draw people in. But it’s the captions that help businesses form connections with your users and build a community around your brand.
If you want the Brooklyn Bridge to yourself, you need to get up at 4am and rug up for 1degree C 😉❄️👍🏼 …and even then we still got a couple of peeps in the shot 😝 haha #brooklynbridge #newyork ab♥️x
A post shared by Amanda Bisk (@amandabisk) on Jun 16, 2018 at 4:43am PDT
Why is it important to connect with your followers? Because it helps fuel engagement. The Instagram algorithm favors posts that get a lot of likes and comments. Basically, engagement sends a strong signal to Instagram that you’ve got quality content, your followers love it, and other users might want to see it too.
Ultimately, good Instagram captions give you the words to tell your brand’s story, build relationships with your followers, and expand your audience.
How to write good Instagram captions
Firstly, let’s get one thing straight: you don’t need to be a literary genius to write good Instagram captions.
There’s also no secret formula or template that works every time. How successful your captions are all comes down to your audience. You need to understand who they are, what they like, and what kinds of content resonates with them.
It’s important that in your captions you come across as authentic. Use your words to give your images context, and always include a CTA to inspire your followers to take some sort of action (more on this later).
Most importantly, show off your personality! Whether you run a yoga studio or an architecture firm, your captions give you the opportunity to tell your business’s unique story.

A post shared by Madewell (@madewell) on Aug 10, 2018 at 5:40am PDT
Captions are limited to 2,200 characters and are truncated after the first three lines of text. This gives you a lot of room to get creative with what you write. While some businesses take advantage of all this space, others post very short captions.
Length-wise, according to CoSchedule, captions perform best at 241 characters.
It can be hard to know what to write. Should you be funny? Serious? Promote some aspect of your brand? Don’t have a caption at all?
There’s no silver bullet. What works for your audience will take some experimentation.
What I do recommend is taking your time when writing your captions. Rather than write a quick caption in 10 seconds, write and rewrite your captions. It often helps to write a bunch in bulk when you’ve got the time and you’re in the right headspace.

Using a consistent brand voice
It’s important to work out your brand voice early on as this will influence not only how you write your captions, but also what kinds of images and videos you share.
If you don’t already know what your brand voice is, think about the qualities and values you want your business to represent. Try writing down a few words that you think best describe what you offer. For example, a business that sells hiking gear might be “adventurous,” “bold,” and “friendly.”
Your brand voice should be consistent across your website and social accounts, i.e. if you use fun and quirky language on your website, use this, too, for your Instagram account.
It’s best to keep your tone of voice light and friendly. It’s not often you use formal or serious-sounding Instagram captions, though it all depends on the industry. For your own account, put your personality on display.
A great example of brand voice is MailChimp. The company’s style guide details how their “voice doesn’t change much,” and their “tone adapts to our users’ feelings.” MailChimp’s fun voice carries through to its Instagram captions.
Sometimes, after a long day, you just need to screenprint some mugs to unwind.

Using emotion
Your emotions heavily influence what you buy. Tapping into your followers’ emotions by using the right kind of language in your captions can help evoke particular feelings and increase sales.
1. Fear
Fear of missing out, aka FOMO, can drive followers to purchase your product. Simply by saying you have limited stock, or your products are on sale for a limited time only, you can stir followers to action.

2. Belonging
People crave connection and want a sense of belonging. Using language that speaks directly to your followers like they are part of your community can help foster relationships that help sell your brand.
#MYMUMROARS ! Mother's Day is coming up and we wanted to do something special to honour our mums. Because let’s face it, without them Hey Tiger would not be what it is today. So, as a thank you for their love and support we wanted to introduce you to the Mothers of the Hey Tiger team. 3. Inspiration
Aspirational captions that showcase how to use your product can inspire your followers to make a purchase, even if they can’t physically see or hold your product first. Lorna Jane inspires its community to be healthy and active while wearing its clothing.

A post shared by LORNA JANE UK (@lornajaneuk) on Jun 12, 2018 at 8:22am PDT
Using calls-to-action
Including a call-to-action in your caption is a simple way to inspire your followers to action, whether it be leaving a comment or clicking the link in your bio.
To create a call-to-action, all you need to do is ask your followers to do something! It’s that simple.
For example, you could ask your followers to answer a question, tag a friend, click the link in your bio, or use your branded hashtag.
Asking a question, like “red wine or white wine?” encourages followers to weigh in with their opinion and leave a comment, which is a great way to drive engagement.
Likewise, asking people to tag their friends in the comments can help increase your brand awareness and increase your follower count. It’s also a great way to draw attention to contests and giveaways.
Tag the person who looks at you like this 💕 #DUPLO #LEGO #love #robot
A post shared by LEGO (@lego) on Aug 26, 2018 at 2:58am PDT
If you want to drive traffic to a new blog post on your site, or just your website in general, you can ask followers to click the link in your bio. When you include the 👉 emoji just before a link, it makes it obvious that you want followers to click it.
Again, captions are cut off in users’ feeds after three lines of text, so you need to convey your key point or call to action right away.
It’s a good idea to include one or two words at the start of your caption to highlight what it’s about, such as “giveaway” or “travel tips” to grab people’s attention.
As far as writing your calls-to-action go, try and use action words like “free,” “now,” and “hurry” in your captions. Action language is more likely to spur followers to take action than passive words.
You only get one link in your bio, so use it wisely! Many brands regularly rotate their link, but services like Linktree let you display a landing page to followers who click your link.
Using hashtags in captions
Using hashtags in your captions is a simple way to highlight important words and help followers discover new content and communities around your business.
There’s a limit of 30 hashtags, but there’s no reason you need to use so many. Track Maven research recommends including no more than 11 hashtags to maximize engagement.
Figuring out what works for your brand will take a bit of experimenting. It’s best to do your research and see which hashtags people in your niche are using and which ones are most active.
A lot of people dump all their hashtags at the end of their captions, but there’s no reason why you need to do this (and you certainly won’t win any brownie points from Instagram for doing so!)
Including hashtags throughout your captions can help with readability and add context to your words.
It’s common practice to post the bulk of your hashtags in the first comment of your post (or after a few empty lines). This ensures followers don’t get distracted and instead focus on reading your caption and acting on your CTA rather than clicking through to another hashtag and leaving your account.
Using emojis
There are no hard and fast rules to using emojis, except that it’s a good idea to use them because they can draw attention to important information in your captions and at the same time show off your personality.
Including an emoji at the start of your caption can set the tone. For example, using a 🚨 tells people there are important details in your caption or you’re running a giveaway.
Feel free to sprinkle as many or as few emojis in your captions as you like, even replace whole words! They’re a great way to add personality when writing good Instagram captions.

Mentioning other Instagram accounts
Whenever you’re posting images that feature other people or brands, it’s nice to give them a shout out.
Including other Instagram accounts in your captions is a great way to connect with other users and build your audience through (hopefully) some cross promotion.
Arrive relaxed. Leave confident. At Mint Dental, we give you the confidence to start everyday with a smile. . Say hello to our mint (haha – get it?!) client @mintdentalgc 💚 who have just la-la launched their new sparkly website. . Um. Talk about the coolest. dentists. ever. #notbias #okalittle

Using branded hashtags
Branded hashtags are a great way to promote product launches, promotions, contests, and sponsored events.
To create a branded hashtag, just go ahead and invent one! You might want to include your brand name, your products, or the name of a specific campaign.
Photo of the Day: #GoProAwards recipient @norm.morrison makes friends with the locals on a morning stroll in #Aruba. ☀️ Share your adventures with us at gopro.com/awards. 📷 . . . #GoPro #GoProTravel #ExperienceDifferent #Flamingos
A post shared by GoPro (@gopro) on Jul 20, 2018 at 9:52am PDT
Interestingly, 70% of hashtags on Instagram are branded.
Always check if others are using the hashtag before you start using it. The last thing you want is to find out it’s been used in some weird or wonderful way after you start your promotion!
Disclosing sponsorships and endorsements
It’s important to let your followers know when your posts are sponsored. With the rise in influencer partnerships and endorsements on Instagram has come an increased interest by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
To avoid a warning letter, always disclose sponsored posts simply include “#ad” or “#sponsored” near the start of your captions. This lets followers know that you’ve been paid to promote a product or brand.
California Dreaming…✨🌻🌼 Spontaneous drives along this golden coastline we found ourselves watching the sunset from the other side of the Pacific Ocean – Thanks to @americanair for this new adventure! 💛 #GdayAmerica #AmericanAirlines
A post shared by Hello Emilie (@helloemilie) on Jun 21, 2018 at 6:05am PDT
You can still disclose sponsorships without a hashtag but you need to make it clear that the post is an endorsement. For example, in the post above, photographer Emilie Ristevski includes “Thanks to @americanair for this new adventure!” in her caption.
Remember, the goal is transparency. Your followers should be able to clearly tell the difference between your regular and sponsored posts.
Types of good Instagram captions
Now that you’re up to speed with how to write good Instagram captions, let’s look at some of the different types of captions you can use.
1. Minimalist
For Tesla, less is more. The company’s captions are usually short, usually featuring just the model of a particular car, and sometimes just an emoji.

2. Informative
National Geographic often includes long captions with detailed information, providing context for its stunning photography while educating followers.

Year-round water is a rare thing in the Utah desert and Calf Creek is an oasis of green among the red rocks of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The Monument was established in 1996. Late last year, the administration reduced the size of the monument by nearly fifty percent. While the falls is still within the monument, the headwaters of Calf Creek are not.

3. Ask a question
With more than 10 million followers, personal trainer Kayla Itsines is incredibly popular in the fitness world. When she posted recently asking her followers to share their best piece of advice, she got more than 2,000 comments and 30,000 likes.
I often get asked this, but I want to hear from YOU! Let’s Motivate Each other. What’s YOUR best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?? Comment below! www.kaylaitsines.com/app

4. Quote
Using images with quotes is popular on Instagram. But using quotes in your captions can be powerful, too, especially when the person or group in your image has something special to say.
“I always have that positive mind.” – @cristiano #JustDoIt

5. Story
The New York Times’ captions usually feature information and facts taken from recently published stories. This type of caption gives followers a sneak peek of what they can expect to read in a full article.
A weed is, by definition, unwanted. “It’s a plant that we have deemed to have no value because it contributes nothing to our life,” @ligayamishan writes in @tmagazine. 🌿 But the weed’s time has come. Weeds are shacking up with more “respectable” flowers in grand floral arrangements and shaggy bouquets. The current obsession with these unruly plants speaks to a larger cultural moment. Something has shifted in “what we consider beautiful,” says Sophia Moreno-Bunge of @isaisafloral. “It’s the story of the intrepid underdog,” says @emilythompsonflowers. What a weed gives a floral arrangement. she says, is a sense of authenticity. 💐 @guido_castagnoli_studio took this photo while on assignment for @tmagazine. The floral arrangement is by @ruby_marylennox. The lamb, Lammy, was tempted. Visit the link in our profile to read about how the common weed has grown on florists — and chefs. #TMensIssue

6. Instructional
Pinch of Yum includes recipes in their captions so users can follow along as they watch a dish being made. This type of post is ripe for bookmarking!
it's normal to get emotional even just READING the words "Golden Graham Bars" – it’s a PEAK nostalgia dessert (or breakfast). these are super smoresy with marshmallows, chocolate, and those lil crispy graham cereals. OH AND HELLO THEY’RE NO BAKE. ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ you'll need:⠀ 6 tablespoons butter⠀ 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips⠀ 1 bag of mini marshmallows⠀ 1 teaspoon vanilla⠀ 1 12-ounce box of Golden Grahams cereal⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ set one cup of the mini marshmallows aside. melt the butter, chocolate chips, the rest of the bag of marshmallows, and vanilla until smooth. mix in the Golden Grahams and remaining marshmallows. press into a 9×13 and let them cool until ready to cut!⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #dessert #sweettooth #chocolate #marshmallows #eeeeeats #easyrecipes #recipe #video #recipevideo #buzzfeast #buzzfeedfood #bhgfood #feedfeed #instayum #onthetable #eatingfortheinsta

7. Giveaway / contest
The folks who run the Instagram account for the Empire State Building regularly run contests encouraging followers to share their photos of the famous landmark.
A picture is worth a thousand words… but yours could be worth 5k! The best places to find queer joy on Instagram
Tumblr media
This post is part of Me, online, Mashable's ongoing series digging into online identities.
If you were a queer kid growing up in the early '10s, Tumblr, not school, was where you found community.
Tumblr was home to some of the internet's gayest Disney Princess memes. It was where you went for the best transmasc fashion, queer Harry Potter fan fiction, lesbian spells, and sometimes even a little bit of love. Queer teens disproportionately used the platform, studies found.
But Tumblr's financials are bleak, and its role in queer culture has quietly diminished. Instead, it's Instagram — an equally visual medium somewhat sheltered from Reddit's trolls, Twitter's bots, and Facebook's morons — to which queer culture has moved.
And it's a beautiful thing. There's just so much greatness to witness, experience, and fave.
SEE ALSO: Hollywood hasn't gotten any better about LGBTQ inclusivity onscreen
Here are a few of the best queer accounts on Instagram, from queer Appalachian meme culture to LGBTQIA+ astrology— and some non-tearful reminiscing about queer platforms past.
1. For "All things dyke and beautiful," aka, vintage photos of K.D. Lang, Godimsuchadyke
Unlike many queer accounts on Instagram, the account's founder chooses to keep Godimsuchadyke anonymous. The result is less a glimpse of one person's life than it is a bird's-eye view of queer women's culture, history, and art.
It's hands down the best place on the web to find hot vintage photos of Ellen and contemporary paeans to Lena Waithe. Think of it as a collage board of 21st- and late 20th-century queer women's life.
"When I started Godimsuchadyke, it transformed Instagram from a platform that I didn’t find very useful beyond content consumption to a platform where I felt that I could share freely," the account founder told Mashable. "I think a lot of that sense of freedom has to do with my decision to keep the account anonymous and also to keep the posts curatorial, as opposed to sharing images of myself or my personal life."
It's a phenomenal account for anybody, but particularly those in the Xennial queer community desperate to see images of '90s dykes other accounts lack.

Pam Grier’s lesbian icon status knows no bounds. The Lesbian Avengers, “We Recruit,” Designed by Carrie Moyer 💣⚢ (“The Lesbian Avengers began in New York City in 1992 as a direct action group focused on issues vital to lesbian survival and visibility. They refined media-savvy tactics, often creating actions for their visual appeal, and touched a nerve with the Lesbian Avenger Manifesto. The group quickly spread worldwide after the Avengers organized a Dyke March for lesbian visibility on the eve of the Lesbian and Gay March on Washington in 1993 that mobilized 20,000 lesbians. The Avengers also developed a civil rights organizing project that championed "out" grassroots activism, that not only fought homophobic initiatives, but worked to train activists for the longterm”) #pamgrier #lesbianavengers #werecruit #gay90s #dyke #lesbianculture #lesbianstyle

While @Godimsuchadyke is proud of their work on Instagram, they're also making a call for increased representation on the platform, namely: "more archival and cultural accounts that are run by QPOC, trans people, and people with a wide array of experiences with diverse bodies, socioeconomic backgrounds, gender expressions, and sexual identities."
2. For nerds who love to read about LGBTQIA+ history: queerbible
Account founder Jack Guinness solicits people to write about their favorite LGBTQ heroes for queerbible, then posts snippets of their always poignant essays on Instagram. There's also really charming original art, for those of us who hate to read more than 100 words on Instagram.
As a queer person, I'm not afraid to admit I always like to read about other people like me throughout history. Queerbible provides the super-gay history my high school textbooks just didn't.
SIR IAN MCKELLEN Today on The Queer Bible: ‘A major reason for me becoming a professional actor was because I’d heard you could meet gay people. Where else could you go? Hundreds of gay men explored and occupied the spaces that were made available there during this time, turning the haunting, broken buildings into makeshift canvases for radical art, and into a sprawling sexual cruising ground shot through with danger. Hujar’s photographs of this precarious pre-AIDS utopia illustrate crumbling, deserted interiors - walls covered in poetic verse or lewd, witty cartoons - contrasting them with the scantily-clad bodies sunbathing and making merry out on the riverside during the summer months.’ . 3. and 4. For the coolest contemporary queer superheroes:  Hayley Kiyoko + Janelle Monae
We all need celebrities to fantasize and gossip about with our equally mildly shallow friends. Kiyoko has been called the "lesbian Jesus." Janelle Monae made pansexual a household term.
For that, they deserve all our likes and love. The best place for that? Instagram.

5. For the best queer rural Appalachian memes (and social services), Queerappalachia
Queerappalachia is Instagram's best account for rural queer Appalachianism, even though competition is, uh, limited. It provides breaking Appalachian news, Dolly Parton memes, BDSM gingerbread iconography, and addiction recovery services for queer and trans Appalachians through a telehealth program.
"These queer [Appalachian] kids need to know about people who got out and did things," Gina Mamone, one of the founders of the account, told Mashable in May. "And that it's okay for them to stay! Stay home and build things. Or not. Whatever they want to do, it's okay. They're okay."

6. For LGBT history, high and low: LGBT_History
If you're the type of person who complains that LGBT history was so much cooler back in the day, this account is for you. LGBT_History goes back — all the way back — and provides an eclectic collection of cultural images at all points along the queer timelines. The account, which has more than 283,000 followers, reflects on key moments in history as well as minor cultural shifts.
It's delightful to look at the protest aesthetic of generations past. Teachers and gay fashionistas, take note.

7. For the history they never taught you in school: BlackLesbianArchives
Queer history often bends to the cis, white, and gay. Even if you don't care about history, BlackLesbianArchives is an awesome corrective to the trend. At fewer than 1,000 followers, the account doesn't currently have the following of some of the others on this list, which is exactly why you should follow it. The account zigzags back and forth through crucial moments black lesbian history.
"The BLA was created in June 25, 2017, due to the lack of resources and representation of Black Lesbian history on the web," the account's founder, Krü Maekdo, told Mashable. "As I started coming into myself, I started to research history on my people of the past. I'm a huge history archivist, so having this information available is crucial to me. I figured if I'm searching for this, then I know there's other people in the world probably wondering where we at."
Black Lesbian Archives has since expanded into an exhibit at Affinity Community Services in Chicago.

@xigammas Pat Parker’s activism included involvement with the Black Panther Movement, contributing to the Women’s Press Collective and serving as medical coordinator for the Oakland Feminist Women’s Health Center. Cheryl Clarke has said of Pat that she articulates “a black lesbian-feminist perspective of love between women and the circumstances that prevent our intimacy and liberation.” She toured with Varied Voices of Black Women, published multiple volumes of poetry, and, in 1980, founded the Black Woman’s Revolutionary Council. #WeAreBlackHistory #BlackHistory #BlackLGBTHistory #LGBTHistory #PatParker #BlackPantherParty

8. For overall excellence in funny memes: Xenaworrierprincess
Let's not lie, 2018 is a low point for planet Earth. But Xenaworrierprincess offers some of the funniest damn queer memes on the internet, and for that, we should be grateful.
"@xenaworrierprincess is a niche lesbian meme page and queer advice zine. I started making memes after moving to a winter-y, strip mall city in the midwest for a Women's Studies grad school program," Madeline Court, the account's founder, told Mashable. "I was researching and writing about lesbian culture all day, but I didn't know any lesbians. It was a really surreal, lonely relationship to my sexuality," she says. "I started making memes and sharing them on my personal Insta because I wanted to feel some kind of connection."
XenaWorrierPrincess doesn't think that Instagram always supports their queer artists — it's not uncommon for the platform to take down posts that include the word "dyke" — but Court is glad the platform doesn't seem to have the same negative energy Tumblr once did: "Instagram prizes curation and deliberateness, I think. It's also a photo app; captions and comments are secondary. Tumblr was really, really text-heavy. A lot of the queer discourse was bad. We were all babies, trying to make sense of the world without any lived experience."
hey! if you are questioning your gender or sexuality or both your gender AND sexuality, here are some amazing resources (a lot of these are aimed at teenagers, but are really thoughtful and applicable to all ages): Autostraddle.com, scarleteen.com, and the Trevor Support Center. If you have access to a city or a university, chances are there is a LBGT community center or space that provides counseling/support. I am a dog with a blog and a creative writing MFA, but I’m sending you so much love 💕💕💕

9. For representation that matters: BlairImani
Blair Imani is a black queer Muslim activist and, with more than 28,000 followers, an Instagram star. Imani's account defies constricting stereotypes that people can't be queer and Muslim or a person of color.
"A lot of people assume that I'm homophobic, or that queer Muslims could not and did not exist. I do exist," Imani told Teen Vogue recently.
Her Instagram is testament.

10. For all the best queer women's history, high and low: Herstory
With more than 133,000 followers, Herstory is the leading queer women-specific history account on Instagram.
"I started the lesbian culture Instagram h_e_r_s_t_o_r_y, which I have been running for about three and a half years now. I post mostly herstoric photos and images from the 1800s to the late 1990s," founder Kelly Rakowski told Mashable. "It all happened organically. I didn’t plan for it to have been so popular. People seem to really respond the images and stories I post. About one and a half years ago I started @herstorypersonals, now renamed @_Personals_, on Instagram. It’s a dating and community account where followers write personals based on old-school newspaper personals ads. I’m currently fundraising on Kickstarter to turn this account into a text-based dating and community app for queers."

11. For queer astrology that'll make you feel all the feelings: Chani Nicholas
Astrology is having a moment, and queer astrologers like Chani Nicholas are leading the way.
You can head to her Instagram for the best queer-friendly, loving, affirming horoscopes on the internet.
"Queer, trans, and gender nonconforming folx, and many marginalized communities, in my experience, have always been attuned to wisdom traditions, art practices, mythologies, and story-telling that explore the value of life beyond the normative conditions we've been given, but cannot exist within joyfully," Nicholas told Mashable earlier this year.
We need more public spaces that welcome and help us hold our grief. So much of this world is constructed to make us suffer. So that we feel less than. So that we will buy more of. Forgetting who we are. Forsaking so much of what we have to give. Depression is a natural side effect of the violent systems we live within. May we all do what we can to recreate the world today as we need it to be. With room to grieve. Give. Love. And receive. Sending much love, protection, and sweetness to you and yours ❤️

Mercury enters Cancer today, reminding us that when we don’t have people and places where we can articulate our feelings, they are so much more of a burden to work through. Emotions need to be expressed. Unpacked. Investigated. Left alone they fester. Twist themselves into strange monsters that lurk in the shadows of our lives. Threaten to wreck what is working. . The world is a dumpster fire of injustice. It is constructed to keep us separate from our power. From our wisdom. From our wildness. We need to both construct, and get ourselves to, the spaces that reflect our beauty and our becoming. The spaces that help us sort through the situations that bewilder, betray, and become too difficult to carry alone. . Each interaction that is done in kindness can become one of those spaces. . This month’s new moon workshop goes into great detail in regards to Mercury’s journey as it will trigger the July 12th eclipse point as it opposes Pluto. If you want to know more, please join me for A Workshop for The New Moon in Gemini and The Full Moon in Capricorn, which is now available for immediate download. . In it you’ll receive meditations, altar suggestions, and rituals specific to your sign for both the new and full moon. I’ve geared the whole course to help cleanse and clear in preparation for this summer’s eclipses as well. Hope you enjoy! #Tuesday #Mercury #NewMoon #Gemini #Astrology #ResetYourSystems

12. For excellence in Samira Wiley: Whodatlikedat
Samira Wiley doesn't provide queer history or astrological wisdom on her account, and that's okay. Sometimes all you need is a simple, relentlessly positive, thirsty queer account in your feed. Bonus: she's apparently in a healthy, happy marriage that should make all of us who've experienced queer drama feel really good.

14. If you feel like you want to understand queer culture but don't get half the terms: gayglossary
Listen. I'm queer and 34 years old, and I still feel like my queer vocabulary is out of date. Gayglossary provides helpful explainers and super-pretty illustrations to make learning all the less irritating. At fewer than 1,000 followers, gayglossary is still a young account, but it's growing, as well it should.
"I wanted to create a really visual glossary that helps to make sense of all LGBTQIAA+ identifying language. Honestly, even a lot of the people I started talking to about the idea didn't even know what LGBTQIAA+ stood for," Kate Carter, the account's founder, told Mashable. "Which made it even more obvious there was a need for a modern resource."

29 Trends from the Turn of the Millennium That Seem so Ridiculous Now
The early 2000s were a transformational time for fashion, hair styles, and technology. Not a lot of what we did and wore made sense, but hey, if Lizzie McGuire was wearing it, I was most likely going to wear it.
Get ready for a few ridiculous and laughable trends that will remind of you some awesome and some awful memories.

Plastic Chokers.
These stretchy chokers could be found on the necks of every girl and could be worn with any outfit.
Sometimes, with enough tickets, you could get them at Chuck E. Cheese.

Tiny sunglasses were all the rage for girls. This is one of those trends that is actually coming back and I don’t know if I’m ready for yet.

Frosted lip gloss was in the back of every girls pocket as they strolled around the mall waiting for their mom to pick them up. You had to layer it on for at least five minutes and then reapply maybe five minutes later.
The next trend will be a serious throwback and might make you cringe a bit.

I miss flip phones. So simple, but so dramatic.
Nothing like giving that thing a good snap close and rolling your eyes to make it feel like you were in a movie.

Lace Up Jeans.

These sexy jeans dressed up any outfit. Thankfully, you never actually had to untie them but they gave a really cool impression.

Neon Colors.
I mean, I don't think I mentioned it in my review, but if you need something on hypervisibility, I grew up in the '90s…I can handle this. Everything was neon and, like, HELLA-visible!! pic.twitter.com/sUKr7Z7e7J
— Jeremiah Graves (@jeremiahgraves) April 26, 2018
Bright colors, bright attitudes, bright future. Neon was so in. Mostly found in tee shirts and sunglasses, neon was always somewhere on your outfit.
For the next trend, you might need to put on those tiny sunglasses to shield your eyes.

Metallic Silver.
Shiny dresses and shoes was quite a ridiculous trend. Silver clothes felt like a futuristic trend, kind of like a fashionable robot.

Bedazzled Anything.
Hats. Jeans pockets. Jackets. Shoes.
If you didn’t have rhinestones, your outfits were seriously slacking.

Tanning Beds.
Glad we finally got this trend over with. This is just a dark part of our past that made you look ridiculous, no matter how natural you thought it looked.

Popcorn Shirts.

These things were way too cool. It was the definition of one size fits all because this tiny tee could stretch to fit four people if you tried it. They always come in weird patterns and colors, almost too irresistible to pass up.

The Internet.
Yeah. That was pretty freaking groundbreaking and kind of life changing. The next trend goes hand in hand with the internet, ridiculousness and all.

These shoes were no joke. Probably the coolest shoes to be made and when you saw someone wearing them, you were always a little jealous.

Lava Lamps.
I used this as a nightlight but it wasn’t lame because it was a lava lamp so it was cool to be afraid of the dark. So many colors and lights. Some lava lamps had glitter which was just incredible. Does anyone else remember how hot they used to get though? It felt like it could burn down your house.
The next trend was as risky as it was ridiculous.

Let’s Leave It In The Past.
Okay these trends were so fun, right? But let’s leave them where we found them…in the past. Except for the internet. We love that. And the inflatable backpacks. I’m okay with those coming back.

Ed. Note: You asked for Blake to write about beer bars, so here you go! These are just a few of the many great beer bars in Memphis. Don’t forget to check out the blog’s Beer Lovers Guide.  I Love Memphis has highlighted plenty of beer bars over the years. We all know the Saucer has alllll the beers and that Young Avenue Deli has an amazing selection  – and they are both awesome bars – but sometimes the day-to-day beer drinkers of Memphis may want to branch out when they go out after work to unwind. Here are five great spots (in no particular order) to get a cold one and relax. 1. The Dirty Crow Inn (855 Kentucky St.) With a laid-back atmosphere, friendly staff, and mouth-watering food, it is easy to understand why the Dirty Crow is exactly what people look for in a chill beer bar. Because everything sounded appetizing, we had a tough time making up our mind what to order.  How do you choose between Poutine fries with smoked chicken and Soy Ginger wings???  We had great service at our table, plus they had a very nice beer selection for a neighborhood-sized bar; I had no problem finding different beers that I liked. Their sign inside says it all: they’re a 5-star dive bar from the the nostalgic posters plastered on the ceiling and tables, to their “Grizzly Wiggly” wall art. You should check out The Dirty Crow if you haven’t yet. Table decor at Dirty Crow. 2. The Green Beetle (325 S. Main St.) Make a pilgrimage to the Beetle, Memphis’s oldest bar on South Main downtown.  In fact, it’s one of the 365 Things To Do In Memphis. They have a continuously changing beer selection and provide patrons with a beer flow chart to help beer drinkers find the right brew.   They first find your overall opinion of macro beers (Budweiser, Miller, Coors, etc…) and based on your opinions of those, take you through a range of options based on whether you like your beers dark, fruity, hoppy, etc… so that you can choose your best route to dive into the craft beer options or stick with something safer for the less adventurous beer drinkers who still want something new. I love that they provide this! The bartenders are always nice and the food menu is solid and deserving of its own separate post. This is a bar where you can sit and not talk to anyone and be happy, or you can find friendly conversation across the bar.  3. The Blue Monkey (2012 Madison Ave or 513 S. Front St.) Like slipping on a comfortable shoe, going to the Monkey is relaxing and predictable every time I step inside one of their two locations. I slide up to the bar, order a beer and know that I’m going to see Memphians having a cold beverage and a good time.   They’ve got a draft and bottle selection that has something for everyone, including local and craft beer options, but besides the beers on tap and the macro beer selection, they don’t do much to let you know what is available. A post shared by The Blue Monkey Memphis (@thebluemonkeymemphisoffical) on May 21, 2016 at 8:49pm PDT When I go to the midtown location, I just walk over to the beer fridge that is tucked behind the server’s station and look for myself, because it’s usually quicker that way than asking servers who aren’t big on beer knowledge. The downtown beer cooler is much more accessible. The Monkey is 21+ and they do allow smoking inside, but they deliver the classic beer bar experience that a lot of us are looking for. They have live music often, pool tables to enjoy and the people watching is second to none. 4. Lucchesi’s Beer Garden (84 S. Reese St.) Nestled quietly off Poplar Avenue at Reese (a bit west of Highland) the Beer Garden sits as one of Memphis’s great neighborhood bars. They have a large group of regulars who come from the area. With over 150 beers to choose from, they easily satisfy any beer drinker’s desire.   The bar staff typically consists of one bartender and one cook in the kitchen, which is important to know if you’re in a hurry and there’re five other food orders in front of yours.  The bartenders are usually very attentive, but on busy nights you might have to wait a few minutes to get your next round. A lot of people confuse Lucchesi’s Beer Garden with Raffe’s Deli, which used to both be owned by Raffe Sakan, before she sold the bar to her daughter Basma and son-in-law Tony (Lucchesi) and sold the deli and beer store to another party.   A post shared by Lucchesi’s Beer Garden (@the_beergarden) on Feb 24, 2017 at 4:55pm PST Tony comes from a long line of Lucchesi’s that reside in Memphis, but he won’t serve up Italian specialties like over at Lucchesi’s Ravioli & Pasta Company off Sanderlin (now owned by the Robilio family).  Instead he creates the Syrian specialties of his in-laws like paninis, gyros, baba ghanouj, grape leaves, and their own sandwiches like the Memphuletta and the Tiger Bite. I highly recommend the Big Bad Blake (just think lots of meats, cheese, olive tapenade, hot sweet mustard, done panini style).  It’s been waiting for Holly to put on a list of 100 things to eat in Memphis for far too long. 5. Patrick’s (4972 Park Ave) Photo via Patricks on Facebook When I sat down at the bar at Patrick’s, three regulars immediately said hello to me.  This is how I know that Patrick’s is a great beer bar. They only have six beers on tap (two are local) plus 18 different bottled beers to choose from. They hit all the regular beer styles that drinkers want, but they’re not going to impress any beer aficionados out there, which is fine because sometimes you have to give your palate a break from all those Barrel-aged Chocolate Stouts and Double IPA’s.  Sometimes a Killian’s Irish amber or a Coors Light are all you need to be happy. They also have a good neighborhood group of regulars that are always talking Memphis sports.  You can get normal bar food, but they also serve up meat and two plates (or multi-veggie plates if you don’t eat meat for some strange reason) that taste like they just came from your grandmother’s kitchen. Catfish, country fried steak, chicken & dumplings are just a few of those options available. A post shared by Christina Hartle (@cswartle) on Oct 18, 2016 at 11:43am PDT During Italian Fest, some of my teammates brought us back some Rueben sandwiches from Patrick’s which saved our souls.  My next trip there I’m taking on “The Mempho” a mac-n-cheese slab grilled on jalapeno cornbread with pulled pork on it.  These are the things that dreams are made of. What Makes a Great Dog Selfie?
There’s nothing a proud dog parent likes better than to post images of and with their dog. The dog selfie is not a new phenomenon, nor was it born with the advent of reversible cameras and social media platforms on which to share them. Regardless of medium — whether the image is committed to stone, carved from marble, executed in paint upon canvas or taken with a mobile phone — no sooner is a new art form developed, than artists of all skill levels find ways to work their dogs into the picture.
A quick peek into the annals of art history shows this to be the case. The 18th-century English painter and engraver William Hogarth, for example, owned a series of Pugs throughout his life. One of his best-known self-portraits gives a Pug named Trump pride of place. Likewise, the 20th-century Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, whose self-portraits rank among her finest and most memorable works, also painted herself with a favorite dog. The 1938 painting, Itzcuintli Dog With Me, portrays Kahlo seated with her beloved Xoloitzcuintli, Mr Xoloti.

Dogs taking selfies
What constitutes a great dog selfie? Let’s start with a few photos where the angle of the image and the position of the dog gives the illusion that a dog wants to take a selfie! Check out this happy little fellow, having a leisurely nap amidst the clover! How intently he stares at the tiny flower, reveling in the first signs of Spring!

Prior to the availability of accessories like the selfie stick, photographing oneself often meant that one’s arms and shoulders necessarily made for bulky intrusions in the foreground. The need to twist your limbs to get yourself or your dog into the frame could make for an awkward image. In this dog selfie, our four-legged friend mimics not only the bipedal stature of their owner, but also the fore-leg contortions required to show itself off!

Even the most callous and high-minded art critic has to admit that they receive, chuckle at and hit the “like” button when they see pictures of their friends making silly faces. A truly funny dog selfie conveys the serendipity of getting the perfect shot at just the right moment. When it looks like a text you might get during your lunch hour from a happy-go-lucky pal, it’s even more precious!

One of the best composed of our dog selfies, this one is particularly good because of the consistency of its color scheme. Shades of blue dominate the background, framed by a series of brown tones, including those on the selfie-taking Jack Russell Terrier‘s head. The neutral whites of the two dogs’ coats stand out more against the blue and brown, and lend a harmony to the whole scene. It’s interrupted only by the bright orange quilt which forces our eyes to meet with those of the canine photographer.

Selfies with dogs
We started our survey of dog selfies with a discussion of how artists portray themselves with their own pets. We now return to that theme, because as hilarious as it is to think of dogs taking their own self-portraits, what we really love to share are photos of us with our dogs. What makes a great entry in the “selfie with dog” genre? Is it the triumph of managing to get the shot when both you and your dog are in the ideal configuration against a gorgeous landscape?

Or is it a sense of spontaneity? Sometimes the stars align, and you end up capturing the moment that your dog surprises you just as you hit the button on your phone. Candid dog selfies like this one can sum up your life together and all of the adventures you shared. In later years, these stolen moments are powerful reminders, simultaneously evoking the sorrow of loss as well as small moments of forgotten joy.
I think we nailed this #dogselfie.

Just like the rest of you, I’m forever trying to take that one picture with my own dog. It’s a goal that’s proved elusive so far with Baby because she’s basically a ball of limitless energy. Every time I try to take a photo of us together, she inevitably hears a twig snap or catches the scent of a nearby squirrel. The resulting images usually find her looking away from the camera or feature a blurry dog head. After 20 or so of these failures, I usually give up. Once in a blue moon, though, everything comes together.

Share your best dog selfies!
The inevitable cultural backlash to anything that brings anybody any joy whatsoever has long since reached the selfie. Scholars of art and art history have been voluminous in their tongue-clucking and finger-wagging, going to great lengths to make distinctions between self-portraiture as high art and the selfie as low art. This distinction is largely academic, and therefore meaningless, as is the very notion of “guilty pleasures.”
Whether you’re the toast of the art world or a clock-punching manual laborer, the advent of digital photography and reversible smartphone cameras makes creating and sharing images of yourself and your beloved pets easier than ever. What makes a dog selfie great is ultimately the joy it brings you, and the delight of sharing it with your friends and family. There must be more true gems out there; share your best dog selfies in the comments below!

No matter what your preferred social media platform is — be it Instagram, Facebook or Twitter — we’ve all seen our friends and coworkers post the “It’s so hard getting out of bed” style of selfie. This adorable Yellow Lab seems like a clever dog for being able to express the all-too-human look of exasperation and world-weariness universally associated with Monday mornings. Welcome to the working week, buddy!

Dogs taking selfies with their friends!
Our next few dog images remind us of the great times and hilarious misadventures we share with our friends and family. It’s amusing enough when it looks like a dog took a selfie of their own volition. What happens when dogs bring their puppy pals in to share the fun? Meet Molly and Taffee, whose photo together reminds me — for better and worse — of most of the photos I took in college! Ah, memories of my misspent youth; the word “selfie” didn’t even exist in those days!

Cheese.

Tiny Sunglasses.
Every time I see a blogger wearing those tiny sunglasses I keep thinking it’s from an old Delia’s catalog pic.twitter.com/sksACaKqG6
— Samantha Raisher (@sraish) April 23, 2018
The smaller the glasses, the more stylish they were.
Tiny sunglasses were all the rage for girls. This is one of those trends that is actually coming back and I don’t know if I’m ready for yet.

Clear Framed Sunglasses.
A post shared by 90’s CHICAS (@90s.chicas) on Apr 27, 2018 at 1:53pm PDT
Every fashion icon was sporting these clear framed sunglasses. Usually they were pink or blue and had little rhinestones on the corner.

Asymmetric Hair Cuts.

— Kim Kimble (@KimbleHairCare) August 18, 2016
Asymmetric haircuts usually were bobs and involved intense highlights or bright colors. It really made quite a statement when you walked into a room.

Frosted Lip Gloss.
Remember when we thought frosted lip gloss was a good look? https://t.co/c4IzgWZYlM pic.twitter.com/iKLo9pU3Xu
— Iris (@heyiris) December 13, 2016
Frosted lip gloss was in the back of every girls pocket as they strolled around the mall waiting for their mom to pick them up. You had to layer it on for at least five minutes and then reapply maybe five minutes later.
The next trend will be a serious throwback and might make you cringe a bit.

Pants That Unzipped Into Shorts.

— Justin Pelazza (@justin_pelazza) August 16, 2017
This might have been one of the most advanced fashion trend ever. Is it too hot? Unzip. BAM. Shorts. There’s a breeze picking up? Zip. BAM. Pants. Truly incredible.

Trucker Hats.

— Kari Cruziiie Cruz (@Cruziiie) December 3, 2015
Von Dutch hats, anyone? A lot of lady celebs rocked these as they strolled downtown with smoothies in hand and maybe their pet pooch in their purse.

Flip Phones.
I miss flip phones. So simple, but so dramatic.
Nothing like giving that thing a good snap close and rolling your eyes to make it feel like you were in a movie.

Lace Up Jeans.
A post shared by YM Bombshell Boutique (@ymbombshellboutique) on Jan 18, 2018 at 1:48pm PST

A post shared by Saturn Collection Vintage (@saturncollection) on Dec 19, 2017 at 6:30pm PST
Colorful Technology.
20 years of iMac (who knew early models were fanless?) https://t.co/005mcTbdt6 pic.twitter.com/T5B5tIuSw2
— FanlessTech (@FanlessTech) May 2, 2018
You better believe I ran straight to that purple iMac in the computer lab when I got to school.
Nothing more exciting for kids than seeing blue and orange computers.
Halter Tops.
via: Twitter
If Baby Spice wore halter tops, I was going to wear a halter top.
Gauchos.
gaucho pants are going to make a comeback I can feel it pic.twitter.com/26RghGO0Cw
— ace (@GraceDuddy) March 21, 2018
So much flow, so much stretch, so much style. You knew you were the “it” girl if you stepped out of your moms’ minivan strutting these gauchos.
Nike Shox.
A moment of silence for old Nike Shox please pic.twitter.com/lviMJyVnuN
— Candice (@kick_tha_CAN) December 13, 2015
These shoes were no joke. Probably the coolest shoes to be made and when you saw someone wearing them, you were always a little jealous.
Lava Lamps.
I used this as a nightlight but it wasn’t lame because it was a lava lamp so it was cool to be afraid of the dark. So many colors and lights. Some lava lamps had glitter which was just incredible. Does anyone else remember how hot they used to get though? It felt like it could burn down your house.
The next trend was as risky as it was ridiculous.
Belly Button Piercings.
Remember when camila performed with Britney during the iconic performance of slave for you at the 2001 VMAs pic.twitter.com/XLeTqjtciN
— Julia 💧 (@trumanregui) April 21, 2016
This went great with your halter tops and any crop top really. These weren’t just the regular button piercings, it was the ones with charms on them and dreamcatchers. Parents hated them but all Britney Spears fans loved them.
Air-Brushed Tee-Shirts.
A post shared by Southcoast Airbrush (Frank) (@southcoastairbrush) on Jan 15, 2018 at 5:43am PST
Every mall had a kiosk where they sold these extravagant air-brushed tee-shirts. Amusement parks also had a great selection.

Inflatable Backpacks.
A post shared by Strictly Hot Deals (@strictlyhotdeals) on Apr 18, 2018 at 10:59pm PDT
I can’t believe these ever went out of style. These were so cool and came in a bunch of different colors. They also doubled as a floatation device if you were ever in an emergency situation.
Studded Belts.
A post shared by Christina Cox (@xtinaecox) on Apr 22, 2018 at 6:19pm PDT
The biggest punk rock accessory of them all. Studded belts were bulky but versatile and sometimes even the preppy kids would try to wear them with their Abercrombie & Fitch tops.
Dresses Over Jeans.
okay but who the hell thought that wearing dresses over jeans would be a good idea pic.twitter.com/glXeghMuFn
— deenerys (@cdaenerys) November 13, 2017
This was my biggest fashion faux pas. You can look back on many of my childhood pictures and find a bright dress on top of some of my dirty old jeans. I don’t really know why this ever caught on.
The next trend is an accessory that every girl owned and revolutionized our hair styles.
Butterfly Clips
A post shared by ContraLuz (@contraluzshop) on Apr 6, 2018 at 4:02pm PDT
These were my life. Butterfly clips were found in every girls hair, no matter the age. It was the perfect way to pin back your baby hairs or make a super twisty up-do. Even celebrities found them stylish and trendy.

Colorful Sweat Suits.

You better believe every girl owned a brightly colored sweatsuit. If it had rhinestones on the back it was even better. I would like to thank The Cheetah Girls for making this a thing. Oh, and Paris Hilton. Such fashion icons.

Denim Everything.
Iconic … if my man not trying to create looks with me like Britney and JT did in '01 that's not my man 😂 pic.twitter.com/aKSkLStOJH
— Youtube: BabsKinks💕 (@babskinks) January 8, 2017
This is one of the most iconic fashion pictures of all time.
The denim on denim choice could only be pulled off if you had total confidence and some chunky highlights really helped tie it all together.

Low-Rise Jeans.
I'm not emotionally prepared for low rise jeans to come back around https://t.co/Q97x9qrG23 pic.twitter.com/kjgvdmfwtZ
— Man Repeller (@ManRepeller) September 9, 2017
These jeans rested just below your hip bones and could almost guarantee a wedgie. Low-rise jeans were seemingly the only option and some girls chose to wear them with crop tops, making their torsos seem extra long.

Let’s Leave It In The Past.
Okay these trends were so fun, right? But let’s leave them where we found them…in the past. Except for the internet. We love that. And the inflatable backpacks. I’m okay with those coming back.
Share this article with your friends who rocked some of these trends back in the day and can have a good laugh at the ridiculousness of them.
