It was my birthday and I came home way past midnight after work. My family stayed up late to give me my birthday present together; a Nintendo Switch, and with it was this game TvT

Quirk: Projectile (Any part of the body chosen takes on the abilities of any projectile weapon that Akako studies in depth. She must intake Iron rich foods because the amo is made with the iron in her blood. Lack of iron will result in iron deficiency symptoms magnified to extreme levels. She sucks on a special dog tag necklace as an emergency iron replenishment when running low in battle.)

Backstory: Neev (later named Akako)’s mother died of birth complications. Leaving her alone with her father, the head general of the U.S military. He was a loving father and taught her about the army in fun, child friendly ways with games, target practice, flying in jets and sky diving. Her quirk manifested at the age of four in a horrible accident. Her father was playing “war” with her. Firing finger guns in each others directions and throwing imaginary grenades. Neev went to fake fire at her father in a playful manner when a real bullet shot from her finger. The bullet nestled in her father’s head, killing him. She ran over to him in and screamed for help. The second in command, Sir Johnson, came running in and was baffled at the sight before him. From that moment on, she was in the care (more like abuse) Sir Johnson. They trained her rigorously despite her being merely a child. As the years passed they treated her less and less as a human and more as an object. A weapon for the convenience of the military. (They didn’t even refer to her as her name, they called her “Project S.S”.) They experimented her quirk’s limits. (One example is seeing if she was bulletproof by shooting her in the side with a small 9mm hand gun), forced her to labour during the day and study weaponry until ungodly hours of the night. At the age of six years old she was the strongest weapon the U.S Military had. But she was emotionally dead. One faithful day, she found a glint if hope. She was making her way around the Pentagon (her “prison”) when she noticed an open cargo plane. She surveyed the area for witnesses. Seeing there was no one around, then she hid in the cargo plane. The hatch closed not long after, the aircraft took off and she spent several hours in the freezing belly of a plane on a flight to an unknown destination. Upon landing, she escaped into the city. Not knowing where she was in the world, she lived on the streets of (what she didn’t know was) Mustafu Japan for five weeks until she was found by Hizashi Yamada. The young girl didn’t know a word of Japanese, so she was very lucky that Mic was an English teacher. He took her home that night giving her a warm place to stay because a six year old shouldn’t be living on the streets. She explained how she got to Japan and Mic listened carefully, understanding the situation and felling remorse for her. He asked for her name and she told him she couldn’t remember her first name and that the only thing she could remember regarding her name is that her last name was Redman. It was because she was never referred to by her name. Sir Johnson and the rest of the military always called her “S.S” or “Project S.S”. After careful consideration, Mic concluded that he would raise her to learn that there is more to life than fighting, sadness and war. Since she would have to learnJapanese, he diecided it would be wise to give her a Japanese name so she could fit into society. So, staying true to her known last name, he gave her the first name Akako, meaning “Red child”. For her new last name, he saw how courageous she had been through her life and how strong she was. He gave her the last name Kimikatsu, meaning “You win”. Because even though she was in a bad place, in the end she won back her freedom. From that day on, Mic taught Akako how to use her quirk in a non-lethal manner. Having her study the use of tranquilizer guns, paintball guns, harpoons, their personal favourite confetti cannons, and many more... Her being the adopted daughter of the hero, she grew up around many of the popular heroes such as Eraser Head who taught her how to not give any fucks, Midnight who helped her with lady problems and being there when she had trouble sleeping because of nightmares (PTSD), Cementos who tutored her in school, Fat Gum who always gave the best hugs when she would be sad, Mrs. Joke who taught her how to laugh again, and even All Might, who taught her to be noble and to be confident in herself. Mic also taught her a few things. he taught her two of her most loved hobbies, music and art.

Peronality: Akako is very easy going. She is often idealistic, but realistic when she needs to be. Her peers describe her as humourous, kind, supportive, empowering, independent and creative. Her faulty traits are that she’s overly emotional, overly empathetic, impulsive, indecisive, blunt (at times), and makes SERIOUSLY grim remarks at inappropriate times (Not the Hahaha dark humour. I mean the stuff that makes you question if you’re safe around her). Also uses dark humour to cover her emotional distress (but it just makes people even more concerned). When she hangs with her friends she is a literal crackhead. She loves all her 1-A pals as if they were her own children. (She actually refers to them as “Child” or “Children” or “My babies” even though she’s younger than most of them). When it comes to her past, she doesn’t talk about it AT ALL to ANYONE (accept to two people, Deku and Todoroki).

Elaborating on her hobbies: Being raised by Hizashi Yamada got her into many rock bands. Being inspired by her adoptive father figure, she learnt as many instruments as she could. They have jam sessions together, they play all their favourite songs. She plays Bass, electric + accounting guitar, ukuele and piano + keyboard. She had always be decent at art but improved when she started admiring heroes. She would draw all her hero mentors and get her drawings signed by them (because she was like a daughter to all of them). She would plaster them all over her walls instead of buying posters because she didn’t want to waste Hizashi’s money.

A little on her PTSD: Still has nightmares. She gets flashbacks when people mention fathers dying and when she sees news on the U.S army in the newspapers or online. Flashbacks result in her isolating herself or in worst cases, panick attacks.

How she got into the hero course: Reccomendations. Having all these connections to popular heroes, you best believe that they helped her train her quirk. She ended up having 11 different heroes reccomend her for the UA hero course.

Close friends include: Dekusquad, Jirou, Mina, Kiri and Bakugou (Suprisingly).

People who dislike her: Monoma (HATES her 10x more than he hates all of 1-A combined. He can’t use her quirk if he tried to copy it because he knows NOTHING about weapons or projectiles), Kendo (Dislikes her because she thinks Akako has an unfair advantage having the heroes constantly supporting her), U.S Military (Still searching for her),

Supegirl season 5 ep 2 review

Little late to the game with episode! But here goes!

Opening scene..... ugh they really are trying hard with the 'tech is bad' trope aren't they?

Nawww Alex made brekkie and now she's sad she might have killed Kelly! Am I the only one who wants Danvers Blueberry Pancakes?

Nawww Brainy made brekkie!! 😂😂 Nia is hilarious and adorable!

Sooo James is going to be a senator? Oh for RAOs sake! He's a photographer who allied himself with Anti Alien Nazi's and is a bloody vigilante!! Not an ex vigilante a CURRENT out and proud vigilante. Correct me if I'm wrong but vigilantes aren't usually wanted in politics right? Oh but we need to send James off on a high note, so let's give him the worst idea since making him CEO of Cat Co!

I quite like the twist that if a green Martian attacks his brother he gets pain to.

Oh so Kelly is ahead of her time with her tech! Kew waves! Go Kelly!!

Sooo... I know Kara is worried about Jonn by she knew she had a meeting to go to but is taking advantage again?

Awww Lena is talking to Hope like this is her best friend, it's the way she gets excited, like when she used to talk to Kara! It's so sad 😥

Hmm... Lena talks about how humans and aliens lie but it's not their fault it's just how they are programmed. I almost thought this was a suttle way of Lena saying she doesn't blame Kara for lying , like She's making an excuse for her.

Lena's idea is actually a noble one, it's what everyone dreams of. A world where people can't hurt eachother, but it's not a plausible reality. The writers really are trying to make Lena unstable, which to be fair after everything she's been through she probably is.

It's soooo out of character for Lena to want to use or basically steal someone else's tech since people have been using her tech for nefarious purposes since day one! This isn't Lena, she's done a complete 180 that makes zero sense.

Oh so Kara decided to show up to work ? Hang on a sec, Nia called Kara to say Andrea was on the war path because she won't start the meeting without everyone there, but Nia waited until Kara got there to go into it? Is she trying to get on Andrea's bad side? Go to the meeting Nia!!

Kara can't stop looking her nose down at Andrea can she? Oh she was given an assignment but it's apparently below her?? Oh she's trying to get another great story thought someone else she knows.. ugh. Like I know it's good to use for resources but Kara has such unfair advantages. How about going after a story you haven't had handed to you on a silver platter?

Oh so now Kara has been told she can do both stories but Nadrwa wants hers done first (fair) and wants it done by noon (fair) but apparently Kara doesnt have time for this? No!! This is getting silly now, Kara this is YOUR job! You can't decide when you want to do it or decide when it's convenient. If kara can't do the job because of Supergirl she shouldn't be doing it. Kara needs to learn she isn't working for Cat, Lena or James anymore. This is the real world now, no more Molly coddling.

I'm loving Kelly this episode! She's only been around 5 minutes and is already way more interesting than James has ever been.

Lena is frighteningly calm right now. Lena can monitor Eve's brain and Eve is telling her that 'they' are controlling her but this doesn't interest Lena at all? NO!! Lena Luthor would be beyond interested in this!

Oh so now Kara is pissed she has to be 'stuck at work' instead of doing her super stuff. THIS.....IS.....YOUR.....JOB!! She's not even subtle with her muttering when she walks past William. When did Kara get like this?

Kara a isn't trapped in a Tower Alex! Kara is choosing to be there and making life difficult for herself because she refuses to even try and get on with Andrea.

So clearly something is up with Williams wife?

This show really likes it's white Martians.

Ohhh so Jonns brother is the reason the Green Martians downfall.

Oh wow, his brother just killed a teenage Martian and were those mass graves? Supergirl isn't pulling it's punches at the moment.

Oh so that's yet another white martian that was killed when it could have been captured. So that whole "we don't kill rule" really has been thrown out the window. Not that they ever stuck by it anyway.

Sooo Nia's job now is to call Kara whenever she's about to get into trouble? Kara you're putting on Nia now and it isn't fair!

So Kara is back at Cat Co and Andrea is miffed (rightly so) that Kara couldn't do the one thing she was asked to do. Kara thinks by saying 'i was about to file it' which she absolutely wasn't at all about to do then Andrea should shug it off. William did it ans Kara is pissed, well Kara maybe you should have done the one small job you were given to do. I get she has super duties, but that is Kara's choice.

Andrea tells her to do some copy exciting, Kara is surprised and put out by this I'm not a copy editor ' Well Kara, you were given your job to do but apparently couldn't do it.

Kara is so miffed she isn't being Molly coddled anymore by her bosses. William was actually right, Kara should be doing that.

Oh so Kara just had an actual tantrum and dropped the work she was given on Williams desk and told him to do it. Sooo.... Kara once again is above doing the one thing her boss asked her to so! Seriously Kara should be sacked!! I would have sacked her by now.

Ooh Andrea and Lena show down. Hold the bloody phone!! Lena's assistant is Andrea's best friends girlfriend?!! This is another betrayal!! That assistant let Andrea in, and Lena was surprised she's there! Sooo other than Jess, is Lena allowed a freaking assistant that isn't going to double cross her or go behind her back?! Enough writers! Enough with the God Damn betrayals it's getting so old!!

Again, Lena isn't the type to try and mess with someone sense tech and steal it!! No!! This isn't her!

Oh so Lena is addicted to the lenses, Andrea even said she was 'cut off' sooo.. This tech is basically a drug??

Oh so Kara has abandoned work again!! To have a brew with Jonn at her loft? Even Jonn says 'shouldn't you be working?" Yes Jonn she should be! But Kara says he's a welcome distraction, erm... a distraction from what Kara? You haven't actually done any work or really even been at Cat Co all day!! You were given one job!

Oh so another reference to Williams wife? Intriguing 🤔

I love how it only took a touch from Alex to know that wasn't Kelly! Nawww!!

Oh what Lena did Eve isn't OK, I love Lena but this is NOT ok. Lena is seriously needed up right now, but she knows she shouldn't be doing this, you can see the tears in her eyes. That slow Girls Wanna Have Fun is actually really fitting.

The writers have moved Lena here to quickly. The Lena we know would never have dine that. That's like making Nia suddenly evil! It makes no sense!

See Kara, Andrea is good when you actually do the job she asked ya to do.

I don't trust Hope, having a body just marks her more human and capable.

Sooo over all a good episode! Best parts were the Non Alex/Kara show down and the Alex and Kelly parts! Worst bits? Totally OOC Lena that makes zero sense, and Kara's 'I'm above this and can't be bothered' attitude towards her job.

Or her good bits include Kelly and Jonn working together and ALL of Brainy!

Minor worst bit? Everything they did with James.

New comics from Small Press Expo 2017

It’s been a while since I did one of these, but wanted to get back into the habit of sharing my favorite books and new discoveries at cons. As most of you know, Youth in Decline took a hiatus for a lot of 2017 to welcome our daughter into the world.  SPX is a fitting “first show back” as the setting and vibe feels like a high school reunion, packed full of our favorite cartoonists, old friends, and longtime readers. Here is me doing brief, quick, hot(?) takes on most of the new books I grabbed at the show.

Sex Fantasy by Sophia Foster-Dimino.  Sophia’s one of the best contemporary cartoonists working, and this chunky tome collects her multi-year series of mins into one thoughtful book. You can see Sophia working out cartooning decisions over the course of each book, with dialogue / camera / perspective experiments everywhere. The final two chapters haven’t been seen before. Just an incredible, amazing book from Koyama Press.

New things from my alltime favorite cartoonist (hands down), Michael DeForge. A new mini called Loose in his series of sketchbooks, and a massive, oversized new story from Koyama Press called Placeholders. It’s hard to even talk about Michael’s work, it’s so good.  Michael is an incredible writer, and the drawings (where, let’s be real, he can basically draw any & everything) exist to support the writing.  Special shoutout to the early YD logo sketch that made it into Placeholders as an evil startup / corporation, haha 

Two fantastic minis from my SPX tablemate, the incredible Lauren Weinstein.  Both of these comics, Normel Person and Perfect Maine Vacation, were nominated for Ignatz Awards and show the incredible and personal power of Lauren’s cartooning. Perfect Maine Vacation is gutwrenching (in a sweet way that kills me as a new parent) and Normel Person is a hilarious ongoing journal of life in Trump’s Amerika.  Did you hear that Lauren is doing a new comic for Youth in Decline for Frontier next year?  Dude, I know!!!!! (so beyond excited).

Ethan Rilly released the 5th issue of his fantastic series Pope Hats.  Ethan’s sense of his own characters and the knack for small moments and relatable, too real dialogue between friends really shines here. Pope Hats is such a dense and well-appointed serial drama, I’m a huge fan.

Everywhere Disappeared by Patrick Kyle.  Patrick’s new collection of short stories from Koyama Press.  A lot of my favorites from the last few years made it into the book.  Patrick mixes familiar shapes with hyper-present narration that does this weird trick on your brain and unfolds weird contemporary paranoias and ennui. Patrick’s short comics are almost like little polemics, or allegories... upsetting but also hilarious.

I’m Not Here by GG.  Another debut from Koyama Press -- Annie had an unparalleled and unprecedented SPX lineup, I’ve never really seen anything ever before at a show, the r a w  p o w e r of her team.  GG debuts her first long-form narrative, a quiet, slow burn of a story about identity and navigating the transition from un-responsible young adult to the burden of your own parents’ failings (health, decision-making, etc). Very restrained, withholding, and poetic. 

Language Barrier by Hannah K. Lee.  I LOVE THE SHAPE OF THIS BOOK. Both like, literally its formal size (small!) and the flow and design of the book. Included in one tome are Hannah’s incredible type experiments, her comics, her illustrations, and her personal stories. This feels like a true monograph, showing me the many sides and numerous formats of expression from an incredible artist. I loved this book.

Baby Let’s Cruise and We’re Together Now by Jasjyot Singh Hans. I’ve been a fan of Jasjyot’s stuff for a while and following his work on Instagram -- these two minis really brought together a lot of interssting threads. Baby Let’s Cruise is the size & form of an iPhone 7 Plus, and captures the furtive feeling of messaging with someone you don’t know, and navigating the power dynamic anxiously.  We’re Together Now uses an arch-metaphor to capture the earnest passion & paranoiac worry of a long distance relationship.  I’m really excited about what Jasjyot is doing (and will do next). 

The Look Book by Jeremy Sorese. A colorful, exploding collection of imagined (and observed) fashion and bodies and cute men. Jeremy depicts people with a weighty, playful, totally wild eye.  I stared at each drawing for 5 minutes, digging into all the little details.  Really loving the illustration and play Jeremy is doing between his longer works, so exciting to daydream about these outfits.

Starfighter Vol. 4 by HamletMachine!~  100% NOT s FOR w, the latest volume of my friend HM’s ongoing space sex opera is now out. I absolutely love Hamlet’s depictions of bodies, of tension between people -- she has an incredible skill for composition and the gnarly beautiful dance of bodies interacting.  HM has cultivated an incredible fanbase stayed true to her vision and worldbuilding. <3

Daises by Bjorn Daniel Miner.  A short collection of comics by Bjorn, created, conceived of, and produced on Risograph as part of his residency at SVA’s Risolab. Each spread is full of wild textures and color experimentation, pushing the risograph to ends I didn’t think were really possible. Melts your eyeballs, very nice!

A Modest Upbringing by Amanda Castillo.  A touching short story about families (and their pain + baggage) from an exciting young talent. Printed on Youth in Decline’s risograph this past summer as part of an internship helping us out!  <3

Summer Wasting and Sunset Lover by Sunmi.  Two minis -- one huge, one small -- from our friend and former intern Sunmi.  Summer Wasting includes a number of observational comics, sketches & poems, and a really thoughtful book design with little asides bound directly into the body of the comic.  Really exciting watching her work change and mature over the past few years, and so excited about her new press, Dandelion Wine Collective.  <3

Kissing, Waves, and I Can Love You Better From Up Here by Rebecca Kirby (aka reweki).  I somehow wasn’t familiar with Rebecca’s work before this SPX, but was really taken with her composition and use of color.  Her panel structures and experimentation in Waves reminded me a bit of Jesse Balmer and other controlled psychedelic pieces, while the bodies in Kissing and ICLYBFUH both showed an extremely confident and fluid sense of bodies (and color). Kissing was extremely NSFW and rad, while her short musing about a lost pet made me tear up a little. Great work from a creator I’m now following closely.

Drag Race Lookbook by Sasha Velour. Okay, so I didn’t get this at Small Press Expo but it was waiting for me when I got home. A lovely and thoughtfully designed book from the one & only... Sasha Velour!  Such a great recap and reliving of her incredible looks from RPDR, and the commentary at the back is the sort of thing I live for...  Who doesn’t adore Sasha? I have sweet but embarrassing memories of our second-ever proper meeting hungover at MoCCA a few years back as tablemates...  such a vibrant and incredible creator!!! ah

The Spectacularly Sad Surreptitious Spinster Snake Sister: Survival Spellbook by April Malig and The Untitled Queen.  This was an absolutely incredible gift from April!!!!  Sasha superfans will recognize this mini as featured in Velour Magazine #3.  That issue smartly photographed and captured this feature as an object mini-within-a-magazine... and this is one of the rare actual copies April made just for Velour.  Incredible risograph work and color composition... and it’s a little piece of comics/drag history. <3 

The Veggie Team by Ginger Craghead. 9-year old cartoonist creates wild mini about the pranks and misadventures of a team of wild veggies.  What more can I say?  This was legit hilarious (See the 2nd panel on the right page above, hahaha).

Yes by Tom Herpich. Final book from around SPX, this is a new mini from Tom... not exactly a comic, but a short story about isolation and gratification. It was startling and lowkey, and the storybook illustrations showed Tom’s incredible sense of framing and pacing. I’m such a huge fan of Tom’s work, it’s exciting as a reader to see him working through new work in his post-Adventure Time life. Available via his Tumblr still (I think?)
