End of An Era: An Ode to 2G

August 2013.

A weird time.

Picture the scene: I’m living on the Upper East Side of Manhattan...with my ex boyfriend (awkward; would not recommend). We had already agreed to go our separate ways in an amicable and respectful fashion but -- ugh, this is SO New York -- our lease wasn’t up until October.

And neither of us wanted to leave the apartment in September until we found new places to live.

Needless to say, finding a new residence became a bit er, urgent, and I sat at my parents kitchen table one August night and started looking on various websites for apartment rentals in Long Island. I didn’t really know what I wanted; I just knew it was time to get my own place. Alone. No roommates; just me.

Minutes later, I received a text from a broker who asked if I was free to view some apartments the following day. Welp, OK, guess we’re gonna do this faster than I thought.

And fast it was -- the second and last apartment I viewed that day was the one I ended up signing the lease for. The apartment I’d move into a month later and end up staying in for four and a half years. The first apartment I EVER lived in on my own.

Looking back at blog posts back then, I found a post with JUST this photo and a simple caption below:

“I think I’m gonna like it here.” (I’m a big Annie fan)

But like they say, all good things must come to an end. Such is life, and it’s time to say goodbye to the studio apartment I’ve called home during some pivotal transitional years in my life. On April 1st, I move into a NEW apartment with Leo; an apartment only a few minutes from this one. We’re super excited about our new digs and this new journey we’re about to embark on (oh man, brace yourself Leo) but today’s post is an ode to apartment 2G.

The one the broker referred to as “2G as in, 2 Good 2 be True” when I told him I wanted to sign the lease.

First, here’s what I WON’T miss:

My tiny easy bake oven (seriously, this thing looks like Fisher Price made it) and complete lack of kitchen counter space

No outlet in the bathroom, which means for 4.5 years I’ve had to blow-dry my hair sitting on my couch with a full-length mirror leaning on a table in front of me

The god-awful temperature fluctuations; where the heat would blast when you didn’t need it and wouldn’t come on when you did -- forcing me to develop a close relationship with my space heater and electric blanket

CONSTANT construction; especially as of late.

My upstairs neighbors who clearly had an evening ritual of apartment bowling/WWF-style wrestling/furniture moving and constantly making a RUCKUS. (I’m 87)

And of course -- last but not least:

THE CAT SAGA. It started with THIS POST when I moved in and quickly noticed cats flocking to me like I had tuna cans and laser pointers in my pockets. It then transformed into a longstanding telenovela starring me, the cat-hating single woman, and Stewie (UGH), my neighbor’s cat who terrorized my life for years to come.

The grand finale? A few months back, my feline nemesis pulled off the ultimate last prank. I’ll just show you the Facebook post about it:

goodbye forever, Stewie, you dick.

Here’s what I will miss, though. Sure, I love the amazing closets that surprisingly came with this studio apartment. I loved all the amazing sunsets and nights spent on my balcony; the serenity that came after a long day:

I’ll miss the weird kinda-looks-like-a-Florida-retirement-home lobby, where I of course took so many #OOTD pics over the years (Leo is going to have to take these from now on). I’ll miss the encounters I had in the elevator or mailroom with the myriad of adorable old people that lived in the building. I’ll miss the blog fodder that came from living here and inspired posts like The Joys of Living Alone (lol) and Perks of Studio Living. But most of all, I’ll miss all the growing I did in this apartment (*insert joke here about eating too much*). Like I said at the top of this post, I moved in at a really weird time in my life. There were changes happening galore, and on top of becoming single for the first time in five years and leaving the city I loved, I was also turning 31 years old and experiencing a huge shift in my personal relationships; watching everyone around me begin to settle down as I was just starting over.

Like I said, it was a weird time.

But I learned to live and be on my own here. I learned how to become even more independent and self-sufficient. I fixed things that were broken (not everything). I killed bugs that made their way in (not all of them). I learned to cook more and most importantly, to enjoy my own company.

And for all that? I’m grateful. But, it’s time for something new and exciting -- a new chapter in my life. But first, I gotta say:

Thanks for the memories, 2G. It’s been fun.
