Have you ever wanted to ask Totsuka questions such as:
How do I enjoy life to the full?
What is the most important thing when it comes to cooking? Do you have any tips for cooking well?
For a long time I’ve been telling myself ‘Let’s go on a diet!’ but it never lasts long so I’m stuck in a cycle of gaining and losing weight. Do you have any advice?
I want to be like Totsuka and try all kinds of things, but always get stuck on the first step. What do you do to try start things off?
I always fall asleep in class. Is there anything that makes you fall asleep? If you know any good ways to stay awake please teach me.
If so, this is the post for you!
Disclaimer: Advice columns are long and boring and even if its totsuka i cbb putting in any effort into bad!translationsummarything-ing it. AKA don’t blame me if its all wrong :D *sparkles*
Q: "How do I enjoy life to the full?"
Hmm. Well. I'm not especially experienced in that and its not like i lived for that long anyway so idk if I'm the best person for you to ask advice from but since it’s my turn I’ll try to answer the best I can.
I didnt really think that deeply about it but here’s roughly what i think.
People never know when theyre going to die.
But its not like thats a bad thing, that just how it is.
People will die eventually.
And we don’t know when that will happen.
It’s important to think about that, but you also shouldn’t overthink it.
That’s why with my camera, travelling, cooking, bonsai, and guitar, rather than put it off until the future, ‘let’s fully enjoy it with all my heart right now!’ is what i think.
Everything you can do now, do it now. (... something about if you say it willfully it could be like his motto... idk) And what else... Smile as much as you can I think?
Both bad things and good thing, in the end they’re both going to happen in the future. At the very least, it’s more fun to smile. During the bad times, it makes you feel just a little better, during the good times, it makes you feel even better than you already feel.
Same goes for having friends with you. With your friends, fun times can be more fun, in hard times rather than sharing the burdern, its more about being resilient together and supporting each other.
Friendship is very important to me.
And so for me, these three things are the secrets to enjoying life as much as possible I guess...
And even if isnt very enjoyable for you at the moment, that’s alright too.
Hey, don’t sweat it. It’ll surely work out somehow.
Come to Bar HOMRA some day, and talk with us.
It’s full of carefree folks so, we’ll help make your troubles seem minor.
Q. “What is the most important thing when it comes to cooking? Do you have any tips for cooking well?”
I like cooking, but Kusanagi-san’s probably better at it you know? The omelettes he makes are fluffy like the ones by professional chefs, they’re like masterpieces.
Are you sure you’re fine with me answering instead of Kusanagi-san? Thank you! Well then since you’ve picked me to answer this let me think about it for a while.
Hm... tips for cooking well... Well, I guess first of all it’s important to like food. That goes for both cooking as well as eating.
For example in my case, if I eat something delicious at the diners then I’ll get on good terms with the chef and ask them about their recipes.
Also, if I hear about a good shop that I’m interested in then I’ll go there, even if it’s far, to have a taste myself. I’m not so much a gourmet, rather I’m just interested in cooking itself. (? That’s why when I cook I try to practise the skills I get from investigate and being taught in order to improve ?)
Of course you won’t be perfect on the first try so you’ll have to keep making mistakes.
Ah there’s something else that’s important.
People to eat your food.
It’s impossible to be objective yourself no matter how hard you try, so you need others to try your food and give you feedback. That was you can build on from their feedback and advice, in order to help you improve quicker.
(? If you have someone like Kusanagi-san who gives very precise advice, you can improve your flavours and technique, and if you have someone like Kamamoto who’s happy munching down anything, ?you can compete with him? it makes it worthwhile? idk? ?)
(? Err..... Something about food sampling, Yata’s has children’s taste in food, give him a hamburg steak with strong flavours to make him happy, experiment with arrangement??? i... dont... know...)
Ah and there’s also that. It’s probably cliche to end like this but yes, it’s important to imagine the face of person you’re cooking for and make it with ‘love’. Just kidding~
Q. For a long time I’ve been telling myself ‘Let’s lose some weight!’ but it never lasts long so I’m stuck in a cycle of gaining and losing weight. Do you have any advice?
Hmm. I don’t think there’s that many Japanese women who actually need to lose weight. Is it okay to say ‘I think you’re fine the way you are’? ... It probably isn’t is it.
Hmm, in that case... I’ll tell you about a recommended weight loss method... I don’t know much about weight loss myself but I’ll pass on what I heard from a massage/therapist acquaintence. They’re a top athelete from some faraway place who set up a store in Shizume-cho. So, how do I know this person? One time, Kamamoto strained his back so I took him to that person’s medical centre, (he was heavy, really heavy) and got him treated.
It was a miracle. (? Errrr something something Kamamoto could walk again! Totsuka got friendly with him in a drinking buddies way or something ?)
He said, most people, when they lose weight, dont think about how they’re going to maintain the lost weight. No matter how vigorous the exercise, or how strict the diet, even if you become as fit as a boxer, there’s no point in just doing it temporarily right?
Rather than thinking about how to “Lose weight”, you ought to think about, how to “maintain lost weight”. People who  are aware of that tend to stay slim. In other words, if you try too hard, it’s inevitably going to rebound. It’s impossible to continue and maintain an incredibly strict diet or exercise to the limit. Think about ways to lose weight that you can comfortably maintain for the rest of your life.
And if you continue that for about half a year, I think you’ll get to a reasonable weight.
Try your best and keep it up!
Try your best within a reasonable limit!
Don’t start off thinking about what your ideal weight is, think about what you can do!
Is that alright...?
Well, I tried answering seriously, but if you fail at losing weight, hey don’t sweat it, it’s fine.
As long as you’re healthy, it’ll work out somehow!
Q. I want to be like Totsuka and try all kinds of things, but always get stuck on the first step. What do you do to try start things off?
Ah that tends to be a common struggle for people who do things carefully and without rushing. Always thinking about ‘what if this happens’ or ‘itll be troublesome if this or that’ and stuff like that?
For example, before going mountain climbing to breathe the fresh air and eat a delicious bentou, they’re always concerned about the trail to get there. Worrying about what if an accident happens, or will someone get injured, that kind of thing.
Well, of course no matter how fun a hobby, they’re all going to involve troublesome and time consuming parts.
Like for a photography, you need money for equipment. For mechanical hobbies, you need a lot of time. Or like for guitar, it took me a year before I could perform in front of an audience.
So for me, I just don’t think about the bothersome parts at first. I focus on the fun parts and just start.
In the case of guitaring, it would be fun to compose songs and sing along with everyone in Homura. For photography, I thought about which sceneries in Shizume-cho I’d want to capture.
For the time being just think about what you want to do and start.
Something something?? Er. Along the way you’ll find things you want to do that you haven’t thought of before??
Like wanting to play the climax of a specific song perfectly. Finding a good view and spamming the shutter.
Usually if you get to something you can’t do you can make up for it along the way.
If you look at the whole picture from the start then you wont want to continue.
The first step to figure out where you can find joy in whatever hobby it is.
Q. I always fall asleep in class. Is there anything that makes you fall asleep? If you know any good ways to stay awake please teach me.
Yup, if you feel sleepy then sleep! Thats the best option!
When I got this question, Kusanagi-san looked over sideways and said “They chose the wrong person to ask.”... He’s right.
If I feel sleepy i’ll just sleep so, I dont know much about staying awake...
Ah, but don’t misunderstand me. It’s not like I’m always sleepy or something. I sleep at normal times and wake up at normal times. I get proper sleep at night. When i go to bed, I turn off the light and turn off my pda so I can concentrate on sleeping.
And if I get sleepy during the day, I face plant onto the table and take a 10 minute nap and feel refreshed afterwards. Kusanagi-san who’s next to me right now taught me that. Recent neuroscience shows that taking a short nap during the daytime is very effective. Even big businesses and researcher institutes are adopting that notion. Something ._. Compared to doing things while exhausted, taking a quick nap clears your head. So instead of trying to stay awake, forcing yourself to take a quick nap might be better?
Even school has breaktimes you can utilize!
By the way, King is by far the person who sleeps the most. He often sleeps on the sofa. Though whenever something happens he wakes up straight away so maybe it’s very light sleep.
Meanwhile I usually don’t see Kusanagi-san sleeping. One time, he was sitting quietly on a chair sleeping but that was one of those rare times where he looked very tired.
Anna takes regular afternoon naps. Yata... ??? also??? idk The most troubling one is Kamamoto I guess? He often snores really loudly.
Anyway sleep varies from person to person. Try the afternoon nap method, and I hope you find the best sleep to suit you.
