I don’t know if this was previously asked but how would the troll language sound like to the human ear? I was also wondering if there are different dialects depending on the caste.

In most of my fics I don't really go into it, so everybody's speaking Space English lmao. But in the fics where Alternian as a language is actually a point of note, I like a very insectile vibe. I kind of like the idea that it's difficult and uncomfortable for humans and trolls to learn to make the noises for each other's languages--trolls do a lot of work with parts of their throat/chest/thorax that humans don't actually have, and are bewildered by how much jaw, tongue, and breath human languages require. Humans aren't physically able to make some of the noises trolls use for language, because they don't have the parts, and learning to make imitations of the various clicks, rattles, chirrs and trills is quite a learning curve.

RE: dialects, I could probably ramble for 1000+ words about,,, actually let me bullet point some thoughts because this paragraph is massively rambling.

my god though, the conflicting linguistic possibilities of a race that's apparently pretty aggressively homogenized overall, but also has incredibly disparate lifespans between very clear castes

do seadwellers speak an older version of Alternian? did shorter lifespans and rapid generational turnover among warmer-blooded trolls lead to "low class" vs "blueblooded vernacular", ie "load gaper" vs "toilet"?

Does the social pressure to stay on top of all the castes below you lead to more heavy enforcement of that divide??

ALSO the concept of like, the vocal posture of USING a "highblood" word being considered a dominant posture or power move--either just because of the associations of it, not using the most respectful language, making it clear "i'm a lowblood, a lower blood than you, I respect that", or for practical reasons! Saying this simpler (more archaic??) highblood word shows your fangs, the longer lowblood terminology developed partially to avoid that sign of disrespect! AHH

And also how much regional dialect DOES one want to write on Alternia?

I think I've written once or twice that Gamzee's got a "seaside accent", because I was thinking that rather than a certain section of land further on-shore, lots of purplebloods might gather spread out along the coast, as the caste right on the border of land- and seadweller. divides along location, but also along bloodcaste and color...

Does Alternia have countries? Does one assume those countries or continents have their own language and culture, when the population apparently only lives there for some short period of years/sweeps before being shipped off into space?

On Beforus we have evidence that other languages are a thing, but Alternia has apparently done away with all sorts of things in the name of the empire--conflicting languages seems like a liability in the march of conquest, so it seems reasonable to me that the language would all be the same--and how does it effect localized dialects and accents, if grubs are all hatched in the same place and then shipped out to different cities, continents, etc?

Or out to different planets/ships! Apparently the empire is ludicrously huge--do settlements on ships far from Alternia develop their own linguistic drift??

Or only if they're colder-blooded trolls, maybe, since trolls as we get them in canon can't reproduce amongst themselves and have to send back to the home planet to create a new generation--so therefore warmer bloods who die or get culled more quickly don't have much chance to develop and pass on new culture before a fresh wave of younger trolls from Alternia come in the follow them?

Does the new generation that's shipped out have its own weird culture drift in a DIFFERENT direction, as Alternian youth culture goes one way and a ship full of adult trolls far from their central civilization goes another?

The concept of a version of PoF where I went in with this as a focus is fascinating to me--Meenah whose mode of speech is written exactly the same but when younger trolls hear it they note that she sounds to them like she's speaking some ancient like, vintage dialect, ala someone who talks like a fancy victorian vampire. Kurloz is hard for the baby clowns to understand sometimes because he's speaking Old Clown and the slang and terminology has shifted over the hundreds and hundreds of sweeps he's been alive. a mix and match of his own speech and hundreds of sweeps of evolution along the way. Young trolls sometimes use terms/slang/dialect that even the generation shipped out before them don't recognize.

Relatedly though it feels like it would shake out to some degree ala various German dialects versus Hochdeutsch, but cranked up to a million--one Technically Textbook Correct version that a person could speak and be understood, maybe that you'd learn in schoolfeeding and that hasn't changed since basically forever, and then whatever billion personal little spins

just, holy shit, the subtle indicators you could get on someone's color, age, location, the amount of time they've spent with their elders off-planet, how old those elders have gotten, the linguistic habits they have--and the linguistic habits they enforce, what's considered polite, how rigid those rules are

I need to go to bed but holy shit man, there are so many axes you could fuck around on, I'm so damn feral thinking about this shit. it makes me into a wild raccoon. I am turning the concept of alien culture over in my pink little hands and splashing it in the water so I can consume it for power

I just.

Okay, I am going to rant a bit, and this is not going to be kind to pagans. Not deliberately unkind, I just have issues with the concept of an eternal runic tradition to be rediscovered.

I had the good fortune recently to be on the receiving end of an impromptu belly dancing lesson. Some of the first words out of the teacher's mouth were, "This is at least two generations removed from source culture," meaning that it has inherently lost meaning and been reinterpreted.

There is no continuous source culture for Norse paganism. We're about fifty generations removed from source culture.

But, I say to myself, let us be realistic here. You believe in math as something that can be discovered independently. You believe in capoeira as something that can be discovered independently. Why not runic magic?

Because runes are, inherently, scratches on rock. Or marks on paper, whatever. They have the meaning we assign to them. There isn't any electricity running in them, there is no special meaning to them. They're neat. They're inherently interchangeable with any other mark, or replaceable, especially in a society that usually writes on paper rather than carving in stone.

(Side note, the way that the medium a society writes in shapes the shape of the letters is very cool.)

It's like the thing about water having memory. Very simple experiment: write a word on paper, attach it to a container of water, freeze it, and look at the crystals. Supposedly if you write a kind word like 'kiss' or 'light' the crystals have a much more even pattern than if you write a mean word like 'Satan' or 'maim'.

Does water have a language? Of course not, water is universal, water is for everyone, water is what it is wherever it is.

So what happens if you write 'hell' on a piece of paper attached to a container of water? Obviously it has bad connotations and the water freezes in an amorphous 'bad' shape, right?

Except that 'hell' means 'bright' in German. So does German water freeze differently than English water? Obviously not.

So it does not matter what the runic shapes are. We do not know what they meant to the source culture, four dozen generations later. If you want to assign meaning to it, and use this to in some way have your personal intentions interact with the intentions of the universe, that's fine, that's a way that humans interact with the universe.

But there is no eternal truth of the runes, they are just shapes. If we did not have any record of Futhark, would we recreate those shapes? Sure! Probably! They're easy to carve in stiff mediums! Would those shapes inherently make sounds, or have associations with gifts or fire or Mercury's position in the sky? Definitely not! I could assign ehwaz to mean the first partial derivative, that is 100% something I would have done when I was studying calculus. It's a useful simple shape. It does not contain inherent meaning.

Math, depending on your choice of axioms, does have an inherent, discoverable quality to it. There is a concept of a fundamental unit, a 1, that I cannot conceive a reasoning species doing without. (If you can, writers, it would make a fantastic alien species.) Once you have 1, 1+1 is not far behind, and suddenly you have positive integers. Things escalate from there.

Capoeira, given the existence of humans and monkeys, does have an inherent, discoverable quality to it. This is a farther leap; capoeira has a lot of weird, non-intuitive motions to it. But a primate is going to learn to run and leap and even turn backwards over itself. This sort of play is going to evolve into some form of gymnastics, and in imitation of itself and other primates, both martial arts and dance are inevitable. It's surprising to me that there aren't more forms that combine the two. I'm not saying capoeira is inevitable, but something akin to it is.

Runes do not have an inherent, discoverable quality. They are scratches. They are symbols that can mean anything. The things they represent may have inherent, discoverable qualities. The things they are meant to do may have inherent, discoverable qualities. There is not anything inherently linking the concept of a certain set of scratches and a certain set of ideas.

I should write my stepsister a letter in futhark, I haven't done that in ages.

Okay re: moirallegience being platonic or romantic... my answer is complicated but basically. Yes, depending on who is interpreting it? What i mean by this is that moirallegience is a very very culturally specific type of relationship that is inherently tied to troll culture and inextricable from the violence and power structures of troll society. imo humans likely cannot replicate it faithfully without that context with maybe a couple exceptions depending on life experiences & disposition. But also we are shown repeatedly that there is a language barrier and so although the trolls have labeled it in English as a type of romance, we can't necessarily take the label at face value because it is entirely possible that there was not a word in English expansive enough to fully describe the nature of all the quadrants and romance was the just closest fit. To me though I think the closest humans get to understanding/replicating moirallegience is like queerplatonic partners BUT that is still missing a HUGE amount of social and political context for the purpose and nature of real moirallegience. Also also I take every depiction of quadrant interactions in the comic with a grain of salt because they are 13 years old imitating relationships adults would have and I would not trust an 8th grader to demonstrate the romantic relationships of adults in a healthy or accurate way yk

Which is all to say. Who knows! Just vibe 😌 🤷

this!!!!! i think the thought that there isn't exactly a translation of it is a really good way to explain it (same with what defines a relationship as being 'beyond' quadrants- there can be many ways a relationship can go beyond those definitions)

there are also a lot of discussion that have been made and can be made on how forced quadrants are in alternian society, especially because these are kids who are being coerced, and they are already dealing with so much due to simply being trolls in modern day alternia (which is so incredibly packed with child-on-child violence that they cannot understand why they're committing this violence as well as the need to y'know, reproduce)

growing up reading homestuck is a whole lot of oh god. oh no. OH GOD. OH NO. and being fucked up and having to understand that all of this happens to children, teenagers who are desperately trying to figure out their world and their identities in the middle of a literal apocalypse. it's so fascinating (albeit fucked up) to think about

Okay the difference between The Lost Boys/Vampire!Doe's spooky ass wild-animal-imitating-human-english voice is DOE KNOWS EXACTLY what she is attempting to say and it's meanings. Doe UNDERSTANDS English; she's spoken the language her entire life, the only issue is her voice can't actually carry the words as they're intended to be spoken. Doe SOUNDS like she may be parroting phrases, but that's only because her physical body is restrictive on her communicating ability.

Doe is NOT dumbly repeating phrases or parroting and, honestly? I'll say her voice sounds VERY pretty when she sticks to speaking a language that is suited to her new vocal cords, that's song-like and pretty, like birds at night! Human language though? There is an undeniable incompatibility there!

Friday night to Saturday night is the only weekly seventh-day Sabbath for all who would be the cherished and righteous true students of the authentic life and teachings of Jesus Christ, because Jesus Christ, His apostles, and all of His followers and believers kept the seventh-day Sabbath holy every single week. And isn't it interesting that those suffering under the 5 generation curse of the antisemitic, genocidal, ethnic cleansing, antichrist/satanic Sunday "Lord's Day" were, and still are, unable to accurately translate the same original Hebrew scriptures that Jesus Christ studied, lived, taught, and died by and for; yet the Hebrews who keep the seventh-day Sabbath holy and keep the commandments of the Almighty Abrahamic G-d of the Abrahamic faiths can and do translate the Hebrew TANAKH scriptures accurately so they're a perfect match for the Christian "New Testament"? The simple, obvious, and undeniable answer is: Psalm 1:6 (JPS Hebrew-English TANAKH), Page 1413: For the Lord cherishes the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked is doomed.

Apologies in advance for the long post there's no Read More on mobile. I'll edit it later i promise.

So like, Team Fortress 2 is a Spy-Fi set in the 60's, where two businessmen, brothers Redmond and Blutarch Mann, wage war over the right to be the sole owners of their inheritance, which their father explicitly left for them to share.

Thing is, this war had been going on since the 1800's. The Brothers Mann had invested in both the cutting edge of technology and the greatest mercenaries on Earth in order to both extend their lifespans and kill the other.

While doing so, both men hired a woman, The Administrator, to direct their forces. Playing both sides, The Administrator locked them into a stalemate to last several generations of assassins, manipulating the brother's fortunes and amusing herself with the unending bloodsport.

Now the thing is, the world of Team Fortress isn't quite the same as ours. Australia is the single most technologically advanced country, due to it being the only source of Australium in the world. A mineral that looks exactly like a bar of gold with a man punching a kangaroo on it, exposure to Australium turned even the biggest moron into an engineering genius with massive muscles, a big mustache, and bushy chest hair in the shape of Australia. It turned, in The Administrator's words, "a nation of idiots" into the most powerful force on the planet, and she used the Mann's fortunes in order to study it and used it to create their life-extending technology.

Speaking of idiots, the current crop of mercenaries are the most unstable and ridiculous batch yet. Nine of the dumbest, deadliest men in their history, all gathered to fight over what is by the 1960's a completely worthless plot of land.

Scout is a young American (specifically Boston) guy who can barely read, loves baseball enough to go to war with a bat, and was created by God to have sex with every woman on Earth. He's not very succesful in that regard. He has a crush on the Administrator's assistant, Miss Pauling. The middle child in a large family, he learned that the only way for him to ever get attention was to arrive first and be as loud and annoying as possible. He also has the amazing ability to defy physics and double jump.

Soldier is a rocket launcher using American soldier, who is heavily brain damaged due to drinking water filled with lead. He's paranoid, violent, and very stupid, but an incredible combatant and a master of rocket jumping, or the act of shooting your feet with a rocket and riding the blast upward. His roommate was the dark wizard Merasmus, who his team must battle every Halloween. He once fought a bear naked and covered in honey, and won. He also once put the whole team in mortal danger by creating a massive bread monster.

Pyro is a mask wearing pyromaniac who terrifies everyone else. Nobody knows who they are, what they're saying, or knows what they look like under the mask. Their teammates believe they are a monster and the most cruel being on Earth. Secretly, Pyro is literally unable to comprehend violence and sees the world through rainbow lens. Their axe is a big lollipop and their enemies are baby angels, and their flamethrower is a bubble blower, and they're playing around and making friends with everyone.

Heavy is a big Russian man with a bigger minigun. He's the most normal and well-adjusted of the mercs, being a fan of Russian literature, teddy bears, and good food. He is however, prone to temper tantrums and he enjoys danger a little too much. His best friend and constant partner is the Medic. His English is slightly broken, but nobody dares make fun of it in fear of their bones getting very broken. Later on the comics introduce his little sister, who's also a gigantic woman with an even greater dangerlust than he does. She gets engaged to the Soldier after they kill a few dozen men together with their bare hands. Heavy is not pleased.

Demoman is a black, Scottish explosives expert with only one eye. Despite being a raging alcoholic, he is shown to be the most succesful of the mercs, being extremely rich and housing his mother in a giant castle. He is however, a great shame to his family, who pride themselves on losing both their eyes in battle. Despite Demoman trying his best, he's simply too good a fighter to lose his other eye in combat, and his mother berates him for this daily. He's also very skilled with a sword and shield, and can build to be a melee fighter. He lost his missing eye after discovering the Bombnomicon, Merasmus' cursed spellbook, and enchanting his eye into a bomb spewing monster. His team does battle with his haunted eye every Halloween. He and Soldier used to be best friends, but suffered a bad breakup through The Administrator's manipulation.

Engineer is the grandson of the first man the Administrator dosed with Australium. A mechanical genius from Texas, his sentry guns, teleporters, dispensers, and occasional cyborg arm are often the biggest nuisances in the game. Like the Heavy, he's quite normal and well-adjusted, although maybe TOO well-adjusted to all the bullshit.

Medic is a quack doctor from Germany whose lack of morales is only matched by the sheer insanity of whatever the fuck he's up to. Having lost his medical license ages ago, he implanted his teammates with megababoon hearts in order for them to survive the steroids his medigun hits them with (which he calls ubercharge). He once sold his soul to the devil for a pen, and then scammed him in order to revive from death. He has a pet pigeon called Archimedes that he sometimes leaves inside his teammates' bodies. He keeps the severed heads of his enemies alive and inside his fridge, where they can talk to him and beg for death. He's very close with the Heavy.

Sniper is the one Australian who doesn't sport a giant mustache and a giant chest. An extremely professional assassin, he seems alright at first... Until you realize he makes bombs out of his pee. He's very focused on his job and may be a little paranoid; one of his personal rules is to have a plan to kill absolutely every single person he ever meets. He's also skilled with a bow, and likes to fight with kukri knives.

Spy is a Frenchman with the amazing ability to shapeshift and perfectly imitate anyone's appearance, voice and mannerisms. Able to kill with a single backstab, his disguises and invisibility cloak allow him to infiltrate the enemy base and take them out from the inside. He likes to think of himself as above his teammates's bullshit, but really he's one of them in every single way. He once taught Scout how to romance a woman, after Scout begged him for help since his only pickup line was "Hey we both got buckets of chicken, wanna do it?" but it went disastrously. His relationship with Scout in general is weird since he once fucked Scout's mother. He later realizes that he may in fact be Scout's father. Knowing that Scout would both never accept him and that he had no right to call himself that, he also disguised himself as Scout's idol Tom Jones in order to comfort Scout as the younger man lay dying, while telling Scout about how he had dropped a Sex Bomb on his mother. When Scout went to heaven, the angels helped preserve the lie by snapping the real Tom Jones' neck just as Scout was about to meet him. In heaven. Since the real Tom Jones was dead. To Spy's chagrin, God raised Scout back from the dead.

There's a lot more - I haven't even touched on the third Mann Brother or Saxton Hale or Miss Pauling yet - but this should be the general gist of TF2.
