#there is one exception - that being the method for creating what the alchemists call the 'elixir of life'
Text
Talbot had missed his opportunity of taking one of those Dwight Fairfields that had been pulled onto the side of the hunters. They were all broken at this, all in varying ways.
Only one kept his mind, only one escaped his experience with the serum.
The Alchemist will test the serum on him, whether it was messing with time and space or using other...methods.
In the void, any and all things that were tossed aside by the Entity was dumped there; forgotten facsimiles of places drawn from equally forgotten survivors and killers. They all resided there, and for a time, Talbot did as well. It was a maddening place, a different sort of purgatory were none escaped. That is, except, for an exceptional man like Talbot who clawed his way out of that endless solitude of nothingness.
And that is where he will find his lost subject.
The Damned.
And damned he will be again.
---
After finding and bringing back this Dwight Fairfield, this, ‘Fancy’ as many people called this man; Talbot prepared a experimentation chamber for ‘fixing’ this body to the extent of his ability. Using parts from other discarded Dwights that he got his hands on as well. There were many, and many of them were different to one another, but all similar to one another.
There was also restraints being tied to him, after all the shock of resurrection tended to make the once dead unstable.
Back in his Victorian time, the thoughts of what he was doing would’ve been incorrigible, unnatural, and an affront to God. After all, who was man, created and brought to life by the ‘One True God’, be if the creation did the same? Would he also be a god? Sacrilegious and blasphemous.
But there Talbot was, injecting a different breath of life back into this creation of God. Filling his veins with the power of Another, revitalizing and coaxing all the important bodily functions back to working order and more.
It started with a blush of peachy orange cheeks on the man’s face, the twitch of fingers and eyes moving under their lids, a deep inhale of air.
And the choking scream that erupted from his mouth spitting out blight as he was yanked out of the long and peaceful slumber and back into Fog, both around him and within his mind.
No longer was he a angel, but the Damned once again.

Here have some creepy AU Victor and Unnamed Bastard Bird(tm) art (catified victor because I've given up on drawing human beings)
Tumblr media
"It's always there. Watching. Waiting. An eternal reminder of the one promise I refuse to keep."
Sometimes, the dead really should stay dead.
(pretty much listening to the new champion theme from LoL on repeat for this one because hooboy it creepy [and also incredibly fitting... which I only just realized now :| ])
#living for moments when reanimated Victor can be truly absolutely unhinged#abhorred creations#frankenstein au#victor frankenstein#catified#(sure alright i'll give context):#basically bastard bird here is a void where originally the souls/spirits/consciousness/energy of the dead would go to be recycled#unfortunately it became sentient#anyways- i won't go into tons of detail but#basically the only time you would ever see it is just before death#there is one exception - that being the method for creating what the alchemists call the 'elixir of life'#part of that involves invoking some fun ritual stuff on a dead creature of your choice (typically a bird - hence - bastard bird)#and it will briefly assume a physical form via that dead thing so it can give you a piece of itself to add to ye olde potion#but now there's another exception#if that elixir is used to reanimate someone - that someone is still technically dead#their soul/spirit/consciousness/energy/whatever exists both in the void and in the reanimated person themself#but that also means the person is *connected* to the void#and if the void so chooses - it can present part of itself to that person as often as it likes.#Agape is a special case since technically he's a whole new life so his soul/spirit/whatever didn't exist beforehand#He's still connected to the void and it manifests as shadows in his peripheral vision or the way all his dreams are backed by a night sky#but Victor is considerably more connected to it due to being trapped in that sort of limbo space#and it's also fuckin pissed at him for not keeping his end of a bargain#so it likes to make life extra hellish for him by hanging out around him a lot and being a constant reminder that-#he's still in the mortal world#and that means he still has a promise to keep.#Anywho lore about the void is still a WIP so some of this may slightly change but eh. still.

Fun facts 🫀🥀
Vlad’s rapier (all the R-C have one) is called ‘Beheaded Voivode’. He can set the blade aflame through Alchemy.
Louisa was exiled from Altazor at the age of 20, then lived in Venterre and Zadith, were she finished her medical studies. She moved to Balkovia for what was supposed to be a 6 months programme and scientific coven, but then she met Vlad and she ended up staying. She was exiled for opposing the dictatorial regime existing in the country.
While Louisa knows alchemy —which she learnt to become a better doctor— she doesn’t consider herself a magic user. She, however, can lend her life force to Vlad if the need arises. This creates a unity of energy between them which Vlad can channel into more powerful alchemy. This is because they’re beneficiaries of The Lovers.
Thematically both of them are about breaking bad parenting cycles. Vlad’s parents were notoriously irresponsible, neglectful and despondent parents, with Matilda being even cruel and purposefully hurtful. Louisa’s were extremely unaccommodating, strict to the point of traumatising and extremely hypocritical. Neither of them wished to have children until they realised they could do it together.
Vlad and Louisa did not marry until the war in Balkovia ended. It began months before Anatole was born, and it ended when he was around the ages of three/four.
Vlad calls Anatole ‘Lilu’ and ‘Lily’, it comes from little.
Vlad’s monocle is functional. It’s made of alchemy altered glass and it’s the design of a group of fellow alchemists and Vlad himself. He has very little vision on his left eye due to almost blowing up a room trying to stabilise fireroot. He was successful, making him the first person to ever stabilise the compound through a stable, long-lasting method. In the future, Anatole uses his father’s alchemic breakthrough to provide public lighting to the streets of Vesuvia. This method is currently used in Balkovia for public buildings, since it requires very little money to run.
Both of them are quick tempered, but understanding with people they love. It’s if they don’t like you the problem.
Originally, Vlad thought Louisa was an alchemist because she was describing the process of lightening up a Molotov.
Louisa knows how to use firearms. She learnt in Altazor, when she began getting involved in the fight and protest against the dictatorship in it. She still has good aim, but is out of practice and prefers it that way. She prefers to focus in ways to help those affected.
Her best medicine is ER medicine and field medicine. She is trained to be a war doctor and was a volunteer when time permitted in the Balkovian war.
While Louisa’s relationship with her parents eased with time, it is not good. She prefers to keep them at a distance.
Originally, Aureliana and Joaquín opposed Louisa marrying Vlad. They even tried to make her go back to Altazor or at least Venterre when the war began, but Louisa told them she would rather take out her own femur and eat it. She, clearly, harboured a lot of resentment for them, as they were key to her exile.
Louisa’s favourite Radošević outside of her husband was Elysian. It was the first time she had a positive role model whose politics were the same as hers, and didn’t punish her for it.
Vlad’s biggest personality trait is ‘I Love My Wife, I Love My Son’.
Louisa was one of the few doctors to treat poor people in Vesuvia who caught the Plague.
Vlad can only draw objects (for invention designs) and buildings.
Both of them read a lot. It’s not weird to find them having reading dates.
Vlad has a series of Alchemic symbols tattooed around his wrist. He uses them as magic on-the-go.
When raising Anatole, they privileged communication, autonomy, self-expression and support more than anything else. Even through his argumentative teenager phase.
Speaking of their son, Anatole takes after Louisa in terms of politics, moral compass, and determination to see things done and to do what is right.
Vlad’s politics can be summarised in “If you’re told not to tamper with the shelf, and you do, and it falls on your head, then that was your own damn fault”.
Whenever Vlad began brooding because he was “sure” Louisa didn’t like him, his cats bit him.
Louisa housed and protected her sister Paris when she ran away from Altazor looking for her, upon discovering the real reason why her sister was sent away. Paris showed up out of the blue at her doorstep. Their other sister, Alma, helped her orchestrate the escape.
Louisa gets ready in 30 minutes, tops. Vlad in 2 hours.
While Valerius acts like he can’t stand her, he actually loves and respects Louisa a ridiculous amount.
Vlad is more emotional than Louisa but has more trouble showing it. He’s gotten better with time.
Vlad sails. Louisa always makes fun of him for being insanely competitive, but joke’s on her because she’s just as bad. As a true Aquarius sun and a Sag moon, she hates being told what to do. Whenever she gets like that, Vlad just looks at her with heart eyes.
Vlad is closest to Violeta Radošević, Milenko’s mother, out of his generation of cousins.
Except for formal occasions, Louisa doesn’t wear shirts or dresses that go past her ankles. Prefers them to the calf, as she needs to be able to move freely (she moves a lot).
It’s very likely Louisa is the one with undiagnosed ADHD out of the two of them, hence where Nana gets it from. She’s never checked.
Louisa loves dancing (so does Vlad but he hates admitting it), and she taught Anatole most of what she knew. As she grew up, she was constantly in dancing lessons, inspired by her own mother’s love of ballroom dancing. It’s one of the few things she’s fully grateful about.
This is more of a language fun fact than anything else, but Alzor and Nopali are extremely similar languages, and are almost virtually interchangeable.
They both stand by ‘one child is enough’ but end up adopting all of Anatole’s friends on accident, sometimes, even his partners a little, depending on the verse we are in.
Finally, out of the Arcana canon characters, Vlad would get along the best with Nadia, Salim and Aisha. Louisa would get along the best with Nadia, Julian and Portia.

The Sundrop Alchemist (7)
Another chappie! Wohoo! @cinn-a-mom, I’ve added something special we talked about at the end. You’ll know what I mean. ;)
Summary: Hugo and Varian get out of the tunnel only to meet more trouble. The two angry men who seem to know Hugo, the guards and the angry horse... And that's not the end of their worries.
AO3 link is here
------
Chapter 7: Oh, Dam!
A pained grunt sounded from the front of the tunnel. Varian’s face scrunched as Hugo let out several harsh words at the rocky wall.
“Why does it have to be so dark in here?” The older teen grunted, rubbing his forehead.
“Wait, I might have something that can help.” Varian opened his bag and started ruffling through it, which wasn’t easy due to lack of light. Ruddiger swung down from his shoulders and dived inside, emerging with a purple-coloured vial in his mouth. “Thanks, bud.” The boy patted the raccoon’s head and took the vial, shaking it a little.
A purple glow lightened the tunnel, enabling the two humans to see something beyond their own noses.
“There, that should do it.” Varian smiled and Hugo huffed in irritation.
“Couldn’t you take it out sooner?” He grumbled and Varian laughed nervously.
“I kinda forgot with all the running away.” The blue-eyed boy replied, scratching the back of his neck. Ruddiger scurried out of the bag and settled back on his spot on the boy’s shoulders.
They walked in silence, until Hugo finally spoke up.
“So… what’s the deal with the hair, anyway?” The teen asked, eyes glancing at the blond hair trailing after Varian. “Why is it so long?”
“No asking about hair.” Varian replied quickly, feeling uncomfortable by the question.
“Ooookay?” Hugo wasn’t satisfied by decided not to push. “What about the critter then?”
“It’s a raccoon and his name is Ruddiger.” The boy answered, feeling talking about Ruddiger is a safer topic. “I… he appeared one day and decided to stay with me. He’s my best friend.”
“Your best friend is a raccoon.” Hugo’s eyebrow rose mockingly and Varian’s cheeks puffed in anger. The bespectacled teen snorted at the younger’s expression and continued with the questions. “And this ‘mother’ of yours?”
“Not talking about Mother.” The answer was quick and Hugo rose a brow, this time in question.
The boy was so mysterious. Living in a tower with no entrance, except for the window at the very top, in the middle of the woods. He kept his hair long, like really long and refused to talk about it. And this Mother, he refused to talk about, too. And there was also the case of-
“What about the lanterns, though?” Hugo tried another topic. “If you really wanted to see them so badly, why didn’t you yet?”
Varian fell silent at the question. Hugo looked at the boy, more puzzled by the second. The kid could, obviously, take care of himself, although his methods seemed quite… unique. But Varian did manage to stop the thugs from giving him out to the guards, and even seemed to communicate with them and make them talk about their dreams, the situation itself still feeling surreal to Hugo.
Talking about dreams… Hugo felt a little bad for snapping at the younger like that back in the pub. Frankly, he didn’t quite understand, why he did so. There was nothing wrong with Varian asking. And Hugo could have handled the situation much better than yelling at the boy.
His train of thoughts was cut abruptly by the sounds of rushed footsteps behind them. The guards must have somehow found about the secret tunnel. Hugo cursed under his breath and grabbed Varian’s hand, pulling him along.
“Hurry up, Blondie. It seems we are being followed.” He called and Varian picked up speed.
They shot out of the tunnel and stopped abruptly, staring at the place they’ve found themselves in. It was a wide open space, with several cave openings in view, looking somehow like a labyrinth. Some of the tunnels were barred with planks, others unreachable from where they were standing. To their right rose a great wooden dam, a rush of water audible from the other side.
“What to do? What to do?” Varian’s blue eyes scanned the surrounding, trying to find a way out.
There was a sound of wood breaking, and they noticed one of the barred tunnel exits snap open, two large men emerging in a hurry. They took notice of Varian and Hugo standing on the ledge above them and their faces scrunched in anger.
“There he is!” One of them called out and Hugo visibly flinched. How come they were here?
“Who are they?” Varian asked, terrified. The men gave him the chills.
“Uh… they don’t like me.” Hugo replied vaguely and Varian would have argued if not for another group of men exiting the tunnel they just came through, followed closely by the white horse.
“And who are they?!” The blue-eyed boy pointed his frying pan at the group.
“Let’s just assume nobody here likes me!” Hugo grunted, both of them backing away.
Varian noticed a wooden plank above, just in the middle of the gap separating them from the closest exit. Frowning with determination, he grabbed the lock of his hair, before pushing the frying pan into Hugo’s chest.
“Hold this.” He said and threw his hair, securing them around the plank. Then, he jumped.
Hugo let out a scream of terror at the boy’s action, but relaxed quickly, as the younger landed safely on the other side.
A battle cry from behind startled him and the guards attacked. With only a frying pan to defend himself, he tried using it as a sword. To his surprise, he knocked out all of the guards, who now laid on the ground, moaning in pain.
“Holy-! You have to get me one of these!” He exclaimed in awe. Then, he heard an angry neigh. He turned and almost instantly had to block a sword, the horse attacking him. “You have got to be kidding me!” He cried, parrying the attacks, the horse pushing furiously.
Then, with one swift motion, the stallion managed to knock the pan from Hugo’s hand. Both of them stared at the utensil falling down, away from the teen’s reach.
“Um… how about we call it a draw?” Hugo tried, smiling nervously and raising his hands in the air.
Just then, a lock of hair tangled around his right hand. Hugo had only a second to react, before he was yanked back, falling down from the ledge.
Varian struggled under the teen’s weight. Hugo was lighter than Mother, but she didn’t swing on his hair like the bespectacled teen was. The blue-eyed boy noticed the two other men running at flying Hugo and with another grunt, pulled on his hair, the men’s swords missing the teen by mere inches.
Hugo landed safely on top of the water-supplying structure and turned to Varian. He cried in alarm, as he noticed the stallion knocking away one of the planks, creating a bridge to where the younger boy was standing.
“Varian, jump!” He cried.
The boy took only one look behind him, before plummeting down the ledge. His hair acted like a swing again and he landed safely on the ground. Hugo jumped right after him, grabbing the boy’s hair in his arms and urging them both to run. They heard another breaking sound and then water rushed at them. They sprinted towards the closest exit, the shadow of water and tipped stone monument darkening the ground. At the last moment, Hugo managed to grab the frying pan floating into the cave, and then the stone fell on the exit and they were concealed in darkness.
Varian startled, when the enormous stone blocked the exit, but not enough for the water to get inside. He turned to flee but was met with wall.
“It’s a dead end!” He cried in terror, Hugo’s face mirroring his emotions.
The older teen paddled back towards the exit and tried to push the stone away but to no avail. Ruddiger chittered nervously on Varian’s shoulders, the water reaching higher and higher. Soon, they were both floating just under the stone ceiling.
“This is all my fault.” Varian tried to stop the tears from spilling. “If only you didn’t stumble onto my tower, we wouldn’t be stuck here!” Ruddiger tried to comfort the boy, but he was as terrified as his human was.
“I… it wasn’t an accident.” Hugo whispered and, for a moment Varian thought that he misheard.
“W-what?” He asked, eyes read from tears.
“I knew about you and the tower.” Hugo sighed and looked away. “If we’re going to die, you should know the truth.”
Varian felt silent. He wanted to get mad at the teen, but what was the point. And, talking about secrets…
“I have hair that glow when I sing…” He said quietly and this time it was Hugo’s turn to stare at him in surprise. Varian mulled the words he just said and gasped. “Hugo, I have hair that glow when I sing!”
“I don’t see how it’s going to help-” The teen tried to argue but Varian wasn’t listening. He took a deep breath and started singing as fast as he could.
“Flowerglimandglowletyourpowershine-” The rest of the words didn’t make it out, as the water reached the ceiling and they were submerged.
For a moment, nothing happened and Varian feared it wasn’t enough. But then, a familiar golden glow appeared and his hair lightened the cave. Hugo looked completely stunned but Varian was already looking for a way out. He noticed a lock of his hair flowing down. There was a current!
He swam down and pushed the rocks away, creating a opening wide enough for both of them to squeeze through. He pulled Hugo’s hand and they swam, the golden glow of his hair slowly dimming. When it finally disappeared, Varian panicked only for a moment, before noticing a light over their head. He swam towards it, pulling still-frozen Hugo with him. They broke the surface and emerged in the river, gasping for air. They reached the shore and got out, wet and out-of-breath.
“We’re alive!” Varian cried in happiness, grinning at Hugo. The teen’s eyes were wide open in surprise.
“His hair glows! And damn he sings!” Hugo exclaimed.
Varian laughed and got out, falling to the grass with a sigh. They were alive.

[Where My Twin Watches]: Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood Episode 43
Last time: The Mine Crew did a puzzle, Fuery is alive damnit, and Beard became Ling. Onwards!
Looks like we’re back at Briggs, there are some rather large explosions going off over it. Let’s hope the wall holds wait what? Briggs is looking just a bit more unscathed than I thought it would be, it seems they’re firing near unimpeded on the Drachma forces who are… yeah, I can’t even call them a fighting force anymore. The Drachmans are just gone, the Drachma CO is staggering through the remains of his troops and artillery, yelling at Kimblee at the lack of infighting from the Briggs side. Heh, so I’m guessing that Sideburns and Buccy rounded up the Central blokes at the first sign of danger, made the excuse that they had to defend “such important officers” when really they were making sure they couldn’t interfere in the defense? Briggs represent! Yeah with one final barrage the Briggs cannons cease fire, Sideburns and Buccy are standing on the fort with no Central officers in sight. Remarking that that was too easy?... uh oh. Crap. Crap crap crap. [Kimblee]: “The crest is carved.” Son of a bitch. Why take the effort to try and kill off some of the best troops of Amestria, when you can use them as an anvil to smash the weaker northern neighbors? Not like the source of the blood matters, just that there’s enough for a Crest in the TC. Leto damn. Alright I’m assuming that we’re at the Ishvalan village Scar mentioned earlier, going by the complexions and white hair. Inside a hut there’s a bit of trouble in paradise, as May is yelling at Al for not grasping the basics of Alkahestry and Al critiques her teaching style. Scar apologises for his rambunctious children to a villager, who brushes it off. Yelling aside the Mine Crew’s helping out, Winry’s doing laundry and Yoki’s being bait for the kids. Although seriously, pulling out his hair? That’s uncalled for. Toad and Marcoh are helping too, getting firewood. What about Boar?... oh yeah, he was selling them out last episode, wasn’t he? Damnit. Damnit! Yup, he’s run out of town to meet up with a cloaked figure, the face says Ishvalan but the voice says Stupid Arrogant Shapeshifting Goth. Episode 43 - “Bite of the Ant” In Central, Riza’s still stuck serving as Bradley’s aide/hostage, she’s making tea when he brings up Selim’s true identity as Pride. Leto damn it, hearing Riza give these muted “yes” answers to Bradley’s questions hurts, screw the Goths for putting her down. Bradley asks for her opinion. Dude, you’re holding her hostage and are an inhuman monster, how do you think she’s going to respond? [Riza]: “I think it’s sad that the family I’ve answered to and trusted isn’t real. That you don’t even have that much. You’re just putting on an act, pretending to be the humans that you secretly despise.” Huh. Bradley’s talking about how his “son” was appointed by his superior, that his power, his rank, everything in his life has been appointed to him…. Except his wife? He chose her? Huh. Right no can’t get complacent, just because he has a wife doesn’t excuse all that he’s done, and I sincerely doubt that she knows about Bradley and Pride’s real natures. You may reminisce about your wife and compliment Riza for her tea, but you still lie to your spouse and hold Riza as a hostage. Back in the snowy climes, Toad and Marcoh are chatting about the doctor’s old job, when Boar and An Innocent Ishvalan wander up. Boar tries to bluff for a moment, but the Ishvalan interrupts him and the red sparks fly and Marcoh knows what’s up. Welp. Envy’s here. He’s taunting Marcoh for thinking he could wait what ice spikes? Oh yeah, Marcoh was a State Alchemist. Alright so it’s Goth and Chimera versus Alchemist and Chimera huh? Boar’s running towards- oh. OH! Ahahaha! “Now what were you saying about my acting?” Dude I am so sorry I compared you to Raven, this is golden! Boar has rejoined Marcoh and Toad, this was all a trap for Envy! Marcoh knew that Envy would want to capture (not kill, he’s still useful for as a Sacrifice) Marcoh on his own. But now Envy’s pulled himself free from the spikes and nope right into another Alchemy attack. Wait but Marcoh and the Chimeras aren’t moving? Alchemy landmines? But I thought the only ranged alchemy was oh I get it. Envy’s taking the landmine comparison literally and is walking in Boar’s footsteps but nope a “landmine” is triggered and he’s launched screaming in frustration. Marcoh claims they’re set to detonate for Goths only, while just off to the side Al and May snicker in a hut, remotely triggering her Alkahestry traps. Ah, right. That’s a good plan for fighting a human-sized opponent, but Envy has his Titan form. That’ll be a bit harder to put down. Toad’s barely able to get Marcoh away from a tail slam, but Boar nearly blinds Envy with some spikes. Add in some “landmines” but Envy’s just smashing through the ice, it’s not enough- incoming Scar! He’s landed on Envy’s back, he’s prepping a HoD… it’s good! Envy’s down! Buuuuut we’re only a third of the way through the episode, there’s no way that Envy’s already dead MARCOH NO! Crap Envy’s grabbed Marcoh with his freaky tongue, ordering everyone to stay back or the doctor dies. Now he’s talking punishment, killing a village and flicking Marcoh in the face when he struggles. And he’s looking at the village I assume we were just in, don’t hurt the people we’ve had on screen! Aargh it’s getting worse as Envy thinks about taking them back home, they’re running low on “ingredients”. Marcoh screams at Envy for still making Philosopher’s Stones- (Sorry, need to make a side note here: this is my main problem with Philosopher’s Stones, in that I view them as a net-loss power source. You kill humans to store their souls in a Stone, and use that for Alchemy/powering your Goth body. But by doing so you decrease the number of people in the world, and make too many Philosopher’s Stones and you use up more humans than are being born. It’s like a vampire drinking all of humanity dry; good for you on killing all of the “lesser beings”, but now without a food source you’re gonna starve to death. Even setting aside the horrific creation method of the stones, the loss of the human mind that could have worked to better civilization if it hadn’t been stolen as a fuel source, the nonrenewable energy of the Philosopher’s Stones is a losing prospect in the long run.) -and demands that they let his research team go. Yeah, about that… [Envy]: “Huh. Oh, sorry. It’s a little late to release them now that we’ve turned them into Philosopher’s Stones.” Yeah, I’ve gotta side with Envy on this one doc. Did you really think that the Goths would just let those loose ends go? Envy goes on to chide Marcoh for crying over his men, when he made so many other Stones with other people. The others look on in silence as NOPE NOPE NOPE WHO DARES WHO’S THE ASS WHO ANIMATED THE BABY FORM ON ENVY’S TONGUE TUGGING AT MARCOH’S SLEEVE AND SOBBING WHAT THE HELL NOT COOL Ahem. So Marcoh is somehow ignoring that as he growls at Envy, saying that he sacrificed so many making the Stones for the Goths wait. wait. [Marcoh]: “I know better than anyone else how much pain goes into creating them! And not only do I know how to create them! But I know how to destroy them as well!” Fuck yeah Doctor Marcoh! Screw Envy! Blue lighting and screaming Goth and determined Marcoh- Mid-ep pictures of Badass Doctor Marcoh and both Armstrongs this day keeps getting better and better! -and back to the screaming Goth as the rest of the Mine Crew look on in shock, there’s a burst of light and red lighting all over the place, back in the village Winry and Yoki look up to see the light show. Marcoh falls to the ground as Envy’s tongue disintegrates, the Titan Goth is falling apart as Boar pulls Marcoh to safety. Envy’s still screaming about the pain, about losing to pathetic humans and Chimeras (Scar has a lovely DNGAF face as this is going on), the terrifyingly powerful Envy reduced to this mass of flesh screaming about not looking down on him, “You wor What What is that Holy crap Envy’s a Yerk!

Oh my Leto this is amazing. The Big Bad Titan-shifting Envy, the most powerful physical being in the setting, is at his most basic form a weak little “worm”. And hey, Marcoh’s still alive! I was sure that the whole Philosopher’s Stone killing spell would have finished him off. Any reason we can’t just take him to Central and off Wrath and Pride, then? The Mine Crew reunites at the village, and it looks like Worm!Envy is still alive, too! Finally we can interrogate a Goth and get some solid answers. We’ll start with Yoki flicking Envy around and can I just say it’s so, so satisfying that we’ve brought a Goth so far down that Yoki can push them around? Winry’s worrying over Marcoh’s condition, but he says this was something he had to do, he had to deal with his very understandable fear of a Goth and do what was right. Like Winry’s parents! Awwww. Ahahaha! Looks like Envy’s still got some bite, he bit Yoki’s finger and ouch that actually looks like it hurts. Whoops Yoki tripped AW HELL NO LETO DAMN IT YOKI YOU JUST GAVE ENVY A NEW HOST NOW WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH GOTH!YOKI FIRST BEARD AND NOW YOU COULD PEOPLE STOP TRYING TO COPY LING Although… yeah this is Yoki who doesn’t have any Alchemist powers so… short fight? [Envy]: “Now if you want him to live you’ll do as I tell you!” [Toad]: “Nah, he’s all yours. Do what you want.” [Boar]: “It’s not like he’s our friend or anything.” Dudes! What the hell! Yeah it’s “just” Yoki but you’re just going to give him up to the Goth?! Sweet Leto, May and Al are already crying over Yoki’s “sacrifice” and Scar just turns his back, Marcoh, Toad, and Al prepare to destroy both him and Yoki oh I get it now. I mean, yeah the bluff got Envy to release Yoki but seriously. He got you out of Baschool through the mines, and this is how you repay him? [Yoki]: “Damn all of you! None of you guys are my friends! How could you?! You’re dead to me!” Back to the hut, Envy’s griping in a jar, Boar and Toad toss him around as Yoki understandably sulks in a corner. But Envy raises a good point: even if he does tell them everything they’ll still kill him for his earlier crimes, so why bother? He’s more curious why the Fullmetal Pipsqueak isn’t around. Apparently the last he heard was that Ed went missing? Ooh, so the Goths don’t know that Ed survived the mineshaft explosion! Unfortunately that leaves Al and Winry wondering if the third member of the Blond Trio is no more… Later that night everyone’s sitting around figuring out what to do next, Al steps up and declares that they won’t backtrack to Baschool. Ed wouldn’t worry about Al or fall victim to rumors from the bad guys, so they’ll keep going forward. Except Scar? Oh hey, looks like Sideburn’s words got through to Scar, he wants to change Amestris rather than just punish it for the Ishvalan Genocide. So he’s going to go off with Marcoh for some unstated reason, Al’s going to head towards Liore to see if the TC tunnel runs under it as well- hold up, is Scar giving Envy to May? [Scar]: “Here, May. Take this thing and return to your country.” Yeah, I’m with Yoki here, hold on! Don’t tell me you’re putting May on the bus! Who’s going to teach them about Alkahestry, aka the one thing that worked against Uncle? [Scar]: “You need to think about your own country!” …damnit, he’s right. May came here to save her clan, to earn the Emperor’s protection by making him immortal. Unless Ling can shake off Greed he’s out of the picture, meaning any help for Xing rests with May. If she sticks around in Amestris as well, then some other clan will get the Emperor’s favor or he’ll die and the whole nation will devolve into warring clans. May needs to save her own country. Amestris will have to be saved by its own people. Aw, it’s day and the Mine Crew’s at a crossroads. Al promises to find May for advanced Alkahestry lessons in the future (hopefully she’s gotten more teaching practice by that point) and she heads off for Xing, Scar and Marcoh split off afterwards for whatever they’re doing, and the remainder of the Mine Crew head out as well (so Yoki stuck with Winry and the Chimeras, not Scar and Marcoh?) Nighttime in Central, a cat’s rummaging in an alleyway when wait is that a Chimera passing by? He looks familiar… [Chimera]: *sniffle* “Poor Mister Greed…” Holy carp it’s one of Greed’s Chimeras! I thought Bradley and his men wiped them out! Seems that Lizard here managed to slip away. He’s hiding from some MPs who are looking for Izumi Curtis and her husband HA you guys missed the power couple by a few episodes. Lizard hears them mention Bradley, aka the guy he saw skewer his boss, and after wavering for a bit hitches a ride on their car to track down Bradley, and hopefully Mister Greed as well. The Mighty Armstrong! Looking… nervous? Oooh, he’s run into Armstrong the Great, who is currently crushing his foot and snapping at him for failing to address her as a General. Geez, Armstrong the Great is kind of a bully to her little brother. Seems Central has gotten reports about the Drachma forces getting wiped out, but there really wasn’t anything they could have done to prevent the Crest of Blood from being made. Armstrong the Great’s doesn’t care, her troops did their job of defending Amestris. [The Mighty Armstrong]: “Oh my, you’ve only grown more ferocious. How will you ever find a husband if you continue to- erk!” *Boot to the knee* Jeez, ease up on your brother! Just look at him with his cringing chibi artstyle, how could you hurt such an adorable guy? And she just keeps it up, when another officer asks if Armstrong the Great is her brother she snaps that she doesn’t consider him one, after his “cowardice” in Ishval. Once again, a brutal reminder that while Armstrong the Great may be on the side of Good, that does not mean that, barring exceptions like a few of her men (like Buccy, hmmm?), she is Nice. The Officer’s leading her down a metal hallway hey is this the one from the credit sequence? He’s quizzing her on the Three State-Appointed Tenets of Alchemy: Obey the Military Do Not Create Gold Do Not Create People As far as rules set by a Government, the first two rules are understandable: you can’t have a Government if the people don’t obey it, and an economy can’t function if people are making money from nothing. But the Third Tenet? Barring the standard natural reproduction of people, Armstrong the Great says that making new people is unethical, considered a sacrilege against God. [Officer]: *Shiny Glasses* “But that isn’t why. The State has no interest in ‘ethics’, they’re too much of a variable to use as a guideline.” Uh, what’s with the hanging heads? Why is Armstrong the Great freaked out guys Armstrong the Great is shocked what the hell are we looking at? [Officer]: “The true reason is far less abstract. The Third Tenant is to prevent someone from creating their own army, General.” End Credits. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH CENTRAL HAS GOLEMS AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH Post-Credits scene: Hey, the Mine Crew’s made it to Liore already! But they’re a bit peckish, where’s someplace to get some grub well hello Rose. She’s happy to see Al after all this time, and actually wanted to see Ed as well. Hee, I saw that smile Winry, and so did Al. Go on, tease her- [Beard]: “Ok Rose, these pots are as clean as they get! Have anything else-” The heck? Beard stuck around Liore? What about your mysterious plan, declaring war against Uncle? Oh my Leto if you actually stuck around just to help out Rose… Oh! Al wasn’t in Resembool when Ed ran into Beard, was he? This is the first time they’ve seen each other since Beard left home! ...but we’re going to have to wait for next episode to see the fallout. Damnit!

ORMUS : Is It The Philosopher's Stone? - with Barry Carter by Celeste Adams
Tumblr media
Since ancient Egyptian times, alchemists have worked in secret, searching to produce something called the Philosopher's Stone or the Elixir of Life. Barry Carter and other researchers believe that ORMUS is related to this search. Since 1995, Barry Carter has been conducting experiments with water modified by ORMUS. He has written numerous articles on the subject and leads workshops around the country where he demonstrates three methods of producing ORMUS water. ORMUS comes from the acronym Orbitally Rearranged Monoatomic Elements, or ORMEs.[†] It was discovered in the late 1970s by David Hudson, an Arizona farmer who noticed some very strange materials on his land as he was mining for gold. During the next decade, Hudson spent several million dollars trying to understand how to create this substance and work with it. ORMUS, which is made from water and other substances, has also been called monoatomic gold, white gold, white powder gold, m-state, AuM, microclusters, and manna. Adams: There's a quote by D. H. Lawrence that says, "Water is hydrogen two parts, oxygen one part, and something else, though we don't know what it is." What did Lawrence mean by that? Carter: There are many unusual properties of water that aren't explainable by the known properties of hydrogen and oxygen or by any concept of how a compound of those two elements should behave.
Tumblr media
There are perhaps thirty-two anomalous properties of water that are unexpected. We believe that those properties are due to the presence of ORMUS in most water molecules. Generally, it is believed that the water molecule is dodecahedral or icosohedral. In other words, the molecule is the shape of a geodesic dome, and this shape allows for a lot of space inside the molecule. Some of us believe that the ORMUS elements hide out in that inner space, inside the dome. From that space, the ORMUS can change the configuration of the water molecule so that it tightens or expands. This is the way we think that these elements may modify the structure of water. It's very clear that there's something else other than H2O — two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen — in ordinary water. One person that I've worked with said that triple distilled water, weighs eight pounds per gallon, but water that's made by burning hydrogen in oxygen weighs seven pounds per gallon. The difference between seven versus eight pounds per gallon indicates that there's a pound of something else in the water. Adams: What exactly is ORMUS? Carter: We think it's a new form of matter that appears to have properties of Spirit. It seems to be a transition between physical reality and spiritual reality. We believe that it can be used as a communication tool between spirit and matter. It is, literally, precious metal elements in a new form, a new state of matter. In this state they don't assay or analyze as the precious metal elements. They look like a white powder instead of like a metal. They can even show up as an oil. Because these materials look like other things, they have not been recognized by science. We've extracted the ORMUS element from the air, from rocks, and from water, including the water of the body. We believe that, perhaps as part of the water molecule, they are the carrier of the information that restructures water. Any system for structuring water depends on the ORMUS elements. Adams: What elements can be found in ORMUS? Carter: The ORMUS or m-state materials are thought to be the precious metal elements in a different atomic state. Cobalt 27, Nickel 28, Copper 29, Ruthenium 44, Rhodium 45, Palladium 46, Silver 47, Osmium 76, Iridium 77, Platinum 78, Gold 79, and Mercury 80 have been identified in this different state of matter and, with the exception of mercury, are listed in Hudson's patents. Adams: How was ORMUS first discovered? Carter: These elements appear to have been known in ancient times. The ancient Egyptians were clearly working with the ORMUS materials in their alchemical processes, and the ancient alchemists also were working with the ORMUS elements. You hear in alchemy about "oil of gold" — which is something we've made using the various ORMUS processes. David Hudson also spoke of the oil of the elements, or the oil of metals. Some people actually claim that they remember past lives in which they were working with these materials. Hudson discovered ORMUS when he was working with a gold-mining process. He was the first to make it known, but it's ancient knowledge that has been rediscovered. Now we are applying the tools of modern science to this ancient knowledge. The ancient Egyptians talked about the "white powder of gold." They have pictures on their bas reliefs of little cones called "shewbread." They say these little cones are white bread, and they also say they're gold. How could something be white bread and gold at the same time? Well, now we know. We've got the technology to make the white powder of gold and form it into a cone-shaped bread if we want to. Several of the procedures for extracting or making ORMUS have been adapted from ancient alchemical texts. We believe that the Philosopher's Stone and the Biblical manna are both variations on this state of matter. Some recommended alchemical texts related to the Philosopher's Stone are Sacred Science by R.A. Schwaller De Lubicz, Le Mystere des Cathedrales by Fulcanelli, and Occult Chemistry by Leadbeater and Besant. The premier treatise on the subject may be The Secret Book by Artephius. Adams: Why do you think this information has become available now? Carter: I think it's because all of the areas of science are dealing with the question of how Spirit and matter are connected, and ORMUS helps explain this. All the areas of science are bumping up against this question. We see people in physics saying there's a non-physical realm. David Bohm called it the Implicate Order. According to Bohm, the Explicate Order — physical reality as we know it — is a projection or a manifestation of this non-physical template. The ORMUS elements clearly connect the realms of the spiritual and the physical. We like to compare ORMUS to the use of cellphones. It used to be we always had to use hard-wired phones, now we've got cellphones and we can walk around and talk and communicate with anybody else. So imagine that every cell in the body has a cellphone, and that they communicate with one another until the cellphone batteries go dead or the antennae are damaged. In this analogy, we think the ORMUS elements go in and recharge the batteries on the cellphones and rebuild the antennas. Instead of just being able to talk to the cell next door, the cell in your hand now can talk to the cell in your big toe. In other words, all of the cells are instantly and continuously in communication. Physicists and biologists call this phenomenon of instant communication "quantum coherence." Everything is coherent and in total communication, instantaneously, all at once. Each water molecule gets into resonance with every other water molecule in the body. As the water molecules change their shape and structure, the water is patterned, and changes happen in the body. Information is imparted to the cell and to the immune system, as well as to the other systems of the body. These changes allow the body to heal more rapidly because the communication is perfect.
Tumblr media
Adams: Do you have evidence to prove that ORMUS has healing capabilities? Carter: We have photos of a woman's tooth. The tooth had been broken in a stair-step manner, and it literally filled in just from drinking ORMUS water. Hundreds of people have reported benefits that include pain reduction, and improvement or recovery from serious diseases like cancer, AIDS, diabetes, and so on. You can find some of these stories on our Subtle Energies website. Several people have noticed that the ingestion of ORMUS seems to stimulate the kundalini energy flow in the body. A couple of people have said that it's like vacuuming the restricted areas of the kundalini, so that it opens the chakras that are tight or closed. Some people who have a tight heart chakra feel as though they're having a heart attack when they drink ORMUS water. The ORMUS is actually opening the heart chakra. A couple of people with heart problems have gone to the doctor and were told that their hearts had become totally healthy. Different ORMUS elements seem to stimulate the different chakras in a beneficial way. We're not really clear about which ones go with which chakra but there's some speculation about that. One of these days we'll get it nailed down, I'm sure. Adams: What kind of benefits have you experienced yourself from ingesting ORMUS? Carter: I don't hurt anymore. In my mid-forties I noticed that I had carpal tunnel in my wrist, my back ached, and I had general joint pain. When I stood up I would ache a bit. I've been taking ORMUS materials for six years and I don't hurt anymore. Now I jump up from my chair — I don't feel like I have to stand up carefully. I'm fifty-three and I feel great. I feel better than I felt when I was seventeen. I've also been taking one of the other ORMUS elements called ORMUS copper, and my beard is clearly getting dark again. So I've had some very great benefits. I feel as though the clock is rolling back for me.

Analysis/Prediction for Danganronpa: Deadication
Hey guys! I know I barely post on tumblr at all but I just thought... I have something to talk about... That's incredibly long... And about Danganronpa...
So where else to go than tumblr?
I recently started following a fangan ( @dangandeadication ) called Danganronpa: Deadication. If I had to pick a reason why I liked it so much, it would have to be the character design and art. Their Discord community is pretty great and involved as well. I'm a busy boy so I can't be as active there as I'd like...
You can check out part one of the prologue here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5krOHv_ls4
Anyways - what is this post about?
It's about my predictions for this Killing Game. I'm not one to simply pick randomly who lives and who dies, there's a method to my madness. I have this fancy shmancy way of making predictions for Danganronpa, and it's called the Elevator Prediction! We simply take a look at the picture of the students in the elevator before the first trial, and we cross off people based on their position. Any sane artist wouldn't group all the survivors next to each other, now... Would they?...
Wait... Deadication doesn't have one of these yet...
Oh, well. I'll just use my detective instincts to place these characters based on their talent, personality, and official Danganronpa games.
A few disclaimers before we begin:
There will be spoilers for DR1, SDR2, and DRV3
I'm explaining my thought pattern here along with each character and why I predicted what I did. I apologize if I sound overly critical - that's not my intention. I had fun thinking of these predictions and I'm looking forward to seeing how they pan out!
There's one more thing that I'd like to explain as well, and it will help contextualize some of my choices.
One of my favorite writers, Brandon Sanderson, writes some great books involving magic. I bring this up because a few ultimates here (Lucky Student, Psychic, Illusionist, Alchemist) are explicitly "magical". The extent of their abilities is unknown for the most part. Being a writer, Brandon Sanderson created rules about writing magic stories, and being a writer myself, I really took this one to heart. (reference: https://brandonsanderson.com/sandersons-first-law/)
"An author’s ability to solve conflict with magic is DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL to how well the reader understands said magic."
What does this mean? Basically - if the magic isn't explained - it feels like magic can solve any problem at any point without warning. There's no mystery to it at all - it just happens. Explaining magic systems is a really great way to actually add to a mystery - it gives the reader rules to follow when the theories start forming in their head. Now go replace the word MAGIC with ULTIMATE... And this creates a framework for working with ultimates in mysteries. It’s so much harder for readers to solve mysteries if it isn’t what can and cannot be done in the universe.
An example of this is Tsumugi's Cospox in DRV3. Her ability was cosplay, and with it, she could basically disguise herself as any character. It was inevitable that a murder would happen with her disguised as someone else, and there was no telling when, or how... Except that they immediately explained the extent of her powers in Chapter 1 after the first killing. This took that possibility off the table - and made all the future cases that much easier by focusing our minds on what was actually relevant instead of some gotcha that wasn't explained.
Again - this is only a guideline - it's not a hard-and-fast rule that everyone has to follow - so my predictions could be off because of this. It's all guesswork anyways, and I'm sure at least half my predictions, if not all of them, will be wrong. But that's the point, isn't it? XD
Without further ado, let's get started!
Yuuma - lucky student  Ok... He's lucky so he can't die right? We don't know how lucky he is, but if we base it off the first two games, then yes, he'd basically be unkillable. There are a couple ultimates here that could get around that... But that would be weird because those ultimates are magical and it seems that Danganronpa Luck is too big a barrier... Keep in mind we've had a survivor Lucky Student and a victim Lucky Student, so what's left? Verdict - CH1 blackened
Shu - bounty hunter Here's another babyface that basically screams "Don't fuck with me!". Considering the case of Fuyuhiko I'm not pinning him as someone who has a change of heart, and considering his profession I think he's not going to be a blackened. I think that would be too obvious. So what does that leave us with? A victim. Also I'm offing him in chapter 1 because if he's not killed early then he will be a suspect in every subsequent case. Which might be a good thing, but I wouldn't want to deal with that :P  But who could possibly kill someone trained to kill... Hmmm... Verdict - CH1 victim, failed attempt to kill Yuuma
Toru - filmmaker Everyone's always comparing him to the Actor and saying that there's some important story element here since their ultimates are so similar. I can't help but think the same. I don't think this dude is the Mastermind, since that would be too obvious in my eyes, however I feel he's involved in some way. If Deadication pulls the same thing that DRV3 did with Rantaro, then they can have some backstory for this guy while also having him dead, all while throwing the suspicion off him as being involved in this game due to him dying early. Verdict - CH2 Victim
Otoha - basketball Literally Akane and Tenko. One of them died and the other survived. Maybe she's a blackened? I don't have much else to say here honestly. I guess she's cute. Verdict - CH2 blackened
Kyusho - detective Alright this is such a clear reference to Kyoko that there might be something actually relevant here - maybe this is an AU where Aoi and Kyoko mashed their names together and adopted him? Maybe the real Danganronpa is going to be mentioned in this game? I doubt both these points but they're good to bring up. So we haven't seen an evil detective yet from the other games so I'm getting that vibe from him. Especially one that doesn't explicitly commit murder... Verdict - CH2 accomplice, CH3 victim
Ayuna - psychic Ok so Psychic means either two things (1) she's a complete airhead OR (2) she's a complete airhead but also Hagakure. Considering my stance on magic powers as explained earlier, I think her powers are going to be meaningless. Maybe she sees a vision that ends up getting her killed? Verdict - CH3 Victim
Sakumi - alchemist Alchemy means either two things (1) she's another complete airhead OR (2) there will be some poison case in this game. I'm honestly feeling the latter. Alchemy is another vague ultimate that has to be explained - and I can only see this being relevant to poisoning. There hasn't been a poison double murder yet and I'm assuming that Deadication will be keeping the same format of double murder since it's classic. But I could be 100% wrong since I'm a sucker for strict guidelines. PS: She's also cute. Verdict - CH3 blackened
Reika - ??? Hmmm I wonder what it could beeee... With this illusionist/alchemist/psychic/occultist quadrafecta I'm thinking she's along a similar vibe, maybe witch or something. We haven't had a ??? blackened yet... thinking-face-intensifies... I'm thinking their ability will be revealed as the cornerstone to this case. Verdict - CH4 blackened
Minoru - barista  Ace Attorney - Godot's theme plays in the background Wait what slot didn't I assign... Oh yeah that's right Verdict - CH4 victim
Iori - gardener I have no idea. He has a Kokichi Ouma face sprite but he's also very knowledgeable about plants. He's probably gonna be a Gonta type - a Hope Boy. Verdict - Survivor
Megumi - attorney Franziska Von Karma was best girl in Ace Attorney, and now Megumi is giving me that same vibe. Now here's someone who can talk her way in a trial... As I'm pinning Kyusho as chaotic, maybe Megumi will be the voice of reason throughout the game... Although I really am suspicious of everyone. There's always a survivor with a head on their shoulders (Kirigiri, Shuichi, Hajime) Verdict - Survivor
Haru - occultist I totally feel that Haru is going to play a big part in this, and have some sort of change-of-heart that makes them a better overall person. They're also cute as well so I can't just kill them off. If at any point in the story Naohiko dies, I fully expect Haru to take his place. They're the most main-character-like out of everyone else. They'd probably take the Byakuya or Fuyuhiko slot in the survivor list. Verdict - Survivor
Keiji - surgeon Come on now you wouldn't make such a large meme NOT a survivor... I feel he's going to be very much like the survivors Kazuichi or Hagakure or Himiko - thinks he's tough shit but he really can't do a darn thing. Verdict - Survivor
Luna - arctic explorer Um I don't have much to say about her except I like her and she's super cute and I want her to survive. She's the waifu survivor like Aoi and Sonia and Maki. She's also smart as well so her surviving would actually make sense. Verdict - Survivor
Ok guys! That's it! We're done with all the predictions for Dead-
WAIT! WHAT IS IT? I'M FORGETTING ABOUT TWO CHARACTERS?
Oh yeah you're right. Whoops.
Hitomi - illusionist Ah yes, the detective's sidekick, just like Kaito and Chiaki and Sayaka. She's overly optimistic, which makes me think she's evil, but there are two reasons why I don't think she is (1) I can't possibly envision any angry or distressed Hitomi sprites AND (2) With an ultimate like Illusionist, it would be too obvious that she's a killer. Based on the principles of magic as I explained earlier, her illusion abilities should come with some set of rules. And these rules weren't explained to us in the prologue - so I'm sort of throwing her ultimate to the curb for now and ignoring its effect on the story. Which is probably wrong, but ah, what the heck. I have a bigger prediction for Hitomi based on her relationship with Naohiko as opposed to her ultimate. Verdict - CH5 victim.
Naohiko - actor The man of the hour himself, the green haired protagonist. Before we begin - let's go over what happens to the protagonists in the first three games: Makoto - survives. Hajime - survives but his past self is the mastermind Kaede - is a blackened and dies in chapter 1 Considering Kaede's case - I'm doubting that there is a protagonist switch at all in this game. I'm pretty sure that they switched during Chapter 1 because of the Hope Fragments and the character development and attachment. As much as I loved Kaede, there wasn't a real reason to have her die in a later chapter. It just wasn't a good game design choice. Now Deadication isn't a game so this might be different but I'm tossing this aside for now. There's also the possibility of Naohiko dying, but I don't think he'd be the one to die in chapter 1. The main character actually has a relevant ultimate this time - actor. One that can be used as a blackened... and a mastermind... dun dun DUN... Technically this is different from SDR2 since Izuru is his own original character and not Hajime Hinata. What I'm going to propose is slightly similar to Hajime's case but it's different in the fact that Izuru had absolutely no effect on the Killing Game other than starting it. One more thing before I explain what I think will happen to Naohiko - let's take a look at the other masterminds' goals: Junko - Inflict Despair on everyone watching Izuru - Preserve Junko and the Remnants of Despair Tsumugi - Entertain everyone watching Now there's one thing that I think is clearly missing here... And that's a personal motive, one that isn't based on world domination or entertainment. Especially because this is a fangan that doesn't explicitly have to be tied to the main series - and it's getting increasingly difficult to do so anyways. So let's recap - A personal motive that isn't based on the Hope-Despair conflict, yet also requires Despair to work properly. This one really wracked my brain but here's my theory:  Naohiko is a schizophrenic just like Toko is. However, he does not know that he has this other, "evil" side to him. There are a few reasons for this: (1) If he noticed it, he would clearly get it treated. Which spelled doom for this evil persona. (2) He's the ultimate actor. Actors retake scenes often enough and they have so many fans that it's typical if he forgets something. This evil side - let's call it Hikonao because I'm boring - has been waiting for its chance to overtake the real Naohiko - and this killing game is just that. Bring Naohiko to Despair, and then his real side and his evil side will be one and the same. So Hikonao sends a letter to Toru stating something about working with Naohiko - only if he brings 14 other ultimates to this secluded area. The letter is signed H - which implicitly brings suspicion on other characters like Haru and Hitomi. Hikonao can be doing things at nighttime or during the day that Naohiko wouldn't remember - and that could clue the reader in to what is happening... (and it also could get us to suspect Hitomi's illusions instead...) Hikonao's plan is to bring the largest possible Despair onto Naohiko - and that would climax in killing his own beloved, Hitomi. In the chapter 5 trial, Naohiko realizes that he is the one that killed Hitomi - and we have to explicitly argue that he didn't kill her, knowing this - something that hasn't been done before in a game, even with Kaede. And then, just like in game 1, Naohiko isn't actually executed due to some ambiguous reason. And then they find the letter from H, find some more stuff, and the mastermind trial. This also brings up an important point - just like the Gonta case in DRV3. If someone else's consciousness kills someone, are you guilty? I have a feeling that Naohiko will end up expelling Hikonao and everything will end happily ever after... Verdict - CH5 blackened and mastermind. Oh and he's also a survivor too
Now I know that you guys think this is a crazy crackpot theory but it's based on writing principles! Even if I'm entirely wrong, I have become a better mystery writer because of it! The more you think about these things, the more you dive deep into how these games are put together and the best way to order and position the story and killings so that things make sense together.
To those of you who have read the entire thing, thank you so so much! I appreciate it, especially since I rambled at times. I'm really looking forward to this project and I know everyone will do a great job with Deadication!
That's it for now. Team Mike, signing off!

Fullmetal Alchemist OG vs. Brotherhood: Hughes’ Investigation (OG 25, BH 10)
1:1 comparison this time, so Brotherhood comes across a little more favorably.
Fullmetal Alchemist Episode 25: "Words of Farewell"
Deciding to follow Scar to get clues about the philosopher's stone, the brothers take Winry with them when she notices that Rush Valley, a town best known for its automail shops, is en route. As they leave, Hughes investigates the fifth laboratory, discovering a connection between it and the war in Ishbal. He confronts the key suspect in it, Juliet Douglas, but is then attacked by Lust. He escapes the two women and tries to telephone Mustang with his information via telephone booth, only to be attacked by Envy, disguised as Ross before he assumes Gracia's form to deliver the death blow. Hughes is posthumously promoted to the rank of a brigadier general. In a flashback, Mustang and Hughes conspire together to ensure the tragedy in Ishbal never happens again.
We open with a flashback to just after Ishbal. Mustang is a mess. He's planning to resurrect the people he killed. Hughes apparently wasn't there, and scolds Mustang for going to the front lines if he couldn't handle the consequences.
Mustang's gun takes focus in the shot when Hughes says there are easier ways to kill yourself.
Mustang says the only reason he didn't try it was out of fear for his own life.
Bradley notices Hughes is sticking his nose where he shouldn't and pays him a visit to say he already investigated it and it's all handled. His coverup is that Grand was working with Ishbalan radicals, which seems like a pretty dubious story. Given Ed's reaction to Ishbal, possibly the truth of the massacre was kept from the public, so it's not unbelievable Ishbalans would work with Grand.
Hughes has found a list of higher-ups other than Grand who are also connected. The shot focuses on Sloth in the background, calmly writing something.
Bradley encourages Hughes to pursue the matter, I guess to lull him into a false sense of security.
Bradley says Sloth is the only one who knows Marcoh's safe location. We already know from episode 22 that she's working with the homunculi, so this may actually be intended as misdirection – see, Bradley didn't know, maybe he's still a good guy… Which of course is brilliant, because that's just how plausible deniability works in real life.
Hughes notices Sloth's nametag doesn't match the name Bradley called her by.
Brosh is listening in on the strategy meeting, but Ross says she doesn't want to get involved in any more crazy stuff.
Ed says he's given up on the Philosopher's Stone and wants to find another way to restore their bodies, so they're going to ask Izumi for help. Armstrong realizes this is because he doesn't want to place the others in the way of danger.
Comedy when Winry talks about Rush Valley.
Elicia is sad to see Ed go.
Cartoon skit when they talk about how mad Izumi would be.
Ah, what they actually plan to do is get Scar to tell them the secret of Ishbal's Stone. Since Ishbal didn't have alchemy, they think they might have used an alternate method. Seems like grasping at straws, but they are pretty desperate.
Al says Scar isn't a bad person, but Ed can't forgive him for using alchemy to kill.
PTSD dream with Scar and Kimblee. It's an actual dream, very distorted.
The master tells Scar he's wrong to seek vengeance while outside, an Amestrian gang wrecks their camp.
Scar kills them. Once again, the skulls are not visibly damaged in the character models.
Ah, Hughes is pointing out how odd it is that the homunculi are destroying people who get close to the Stone if they want people to make one.
Sloth calls Hughes to say she'll escort him to Marcoh's location. Hughes figures out that her given name matches that of the soldier who started the Ishbal war. That soldier was not only supposedly dead at the time, but continued to rise through the ranks poshumously.
Hughes confronts her on this. What was his plan here, exactly?
Why does Lust only extend her claws halfway instead of killing him outright?
Hughes notices her tattoo.
I do have to wonder why Envy doesn't shoot Hughes in the back while they're running? It's possible he wants to see what Hughes will do, I suppose.
Hughes calls Mustang only to discover he's already left for Central.
Hughes coldly cuts Envy-Ross’ throat, which is a really strong image that really cements how brutal and effective Hughes can be when he wants to.
When Hughes dies, we finish the flashback from the opening: Mustang tells him his plan to become Fuhrer.
Mustang says he's tempted to use human transmutation to bring back Hughes.
Mustang cries, and pretends it's the rain. The sky is clear.
We end with the Elrics reflecting on everything Hughes has done for them. Dramatic irony!
Ed sees… Hughes' ghost…?
Credits roll at the end, so I guess this is the end of season 1.
FMA Brotherhood Episode 10: "Separate Destinations"
Führer King Bradley appears at the hospital and warns the Elric brothers to be careful around the military, and he then exits through a window to evade his subordinates. Edward and Alphonse decide to go to the town of Dublith to visit their alchemy teacher, Izumi Curtis, to ask her for information about the philosopher's stone. They agree to take Winry with them when she notices that Rush Valley, a town known for creating the best automail in the world, is on the way to Dublith. Meanwhile, Hughes links the problems in Liore, the fifth laboratory, and the Ishval civil war. He discovers a connection, but is then attacked by Lust. He escapes her and tries to contact Mustang with his information at a public telephone booth, only to be pursued and gunned down by Envy, disguised firstly as Ross, and then as his wife Gracia. Hughes is posthumously promoted to the rank of brigadier general while his murder is investigated by Mustang, who concludes via Armstrong that a high ranked member of the military may be responsible for ordering Hughes' death.
We open with a flashback to Ishbal, and we get the full speech. So Mustang was openly talking about treason while in a crowd of soldiers. Okay then. We also get a shot of Mustang's super fireballs, similar to the flashback in OG.
Bradley looks directly at him and gives him a death glare. So Bradley apparently knew about this the whole time and at no point tried to kill Mustang, because…?
We cut to Mustang in the present day instead of Hughes because of course we do. He's about to move to Central.
Cartoon shift when the heroes reflect on their leads apparently deadending.
Same scene with Brosh and Ross.
Bradley pays Ed a visit. He gives the same "You know too much LOL J/K" speech he gave Hughes in OG. Ed and Al remain in cartoon form throughout the scene.
Bradley claims there's an enemy faction infiltrating the government. The Stone researches went missing only days before the Fifth Laboratory's collapse, not years as in OG.
Bradley tells everyone to be cautious, but keep investigating.
Comedy as Bradley's subordinates call for him and he sneaks away.
Cartoon face as the brothers freak out about Izumi.
Skit with Winry wanting to go to Rush Valley is very similar, but we see the map and locations more clearly.
Hughes tells Ed to marry Winry. Stop being creepy, Hughes.
Hughes reiterates that Winry can stay with them whenever she's in Central.
Gracia tells Hughes to come home safe. Ohoho.
The brothers really are intending to visit Izumi, apparently? Similar cartoon skit when they talk about how she'll kill them.
There have been rebellions in the north area as well. Hughes is worried the government will be overthrown. Oh no…?
Less of Sheska, but also less of Hughes abusing her. She's just in the background looking tired.
Hughes' logic is much less clear. He just mutters something about the uprisings and human sacrifices and wonders who ordered everything. He for some reason doesn't think it's the Fuhrer, because he thinks he needs to tell him immediately.
Lust ambushes Hughes in the archive room. How do they even know he knows anything dangerous at this point? If this is all it takes to get you killed, they should be killing all the heroes at this point.
Hughes notices the tattoo, and we get a closeup shot in case you didn't.
Hughes is much more badly injured by Lust's attack, visibly staggers and collapses.
I think this is our first confirmation homunculi can survive lethal attacks?
Hughes talks to the telephone operator, who sees that he's bleeding. I'd say that's shoddy planning on the villains' part, but Hughes proceeds to tell her nothing, so the idiot ball's just getting passed around today. Even if he didn't trust her, he could have had her send a coded message to Mustang or something.
Hughes doesn't want to use an internal line, so he goes to the phone booth.
Hughes has to give a code to connect to Mustang from an outside line. This is where he drops the photo: he needs to open his notebook to get the code.
Envy-Ross pulls a gun on Hughes while he's in the phone booth. Why did he even bother transforming? Given what happens later I guess they were planning to frame Ross, but why does Envy put up an act? That this is so obviously not Ross completely ruins the effect. Envy also does not just shoot him immediately, because…?
And Envy is still talking. Why.
No shot of Envy looking at the photo.
Hughes yells "WHAT ARE YOU?!" when Envy turns into Gracia. I'm sorry, that completely ruins the effect of the scene for me. If he had time to talk he had time to throw the knife. Less is more.
We cut away for the gunshot.
Mustang actually does pick up, and Hughes clutches for the receiver before Envy just hangs up. Why didn't Envy use Hughes' voice to screw with Mustang? That would have been actually clever.
Envy sneers about humans being idiots. Except he's in his default form in a place where anyone could see him, so methinks the pot is calling the kettle black.
Hughes' family photo gets covered over with his blood. It works I guess, but I feel like it's over-the-top.
And Hughes gets last words apologizing to his family for being late. Too much.
We see the scene with Ed before the funeral. I don't like that. I think it has stronger impact at the end, especially since it leads us effectively into the next arc.
Elicia's tone is less even: she starts off pretty calm and ends hysterical. I think that's too much like how an adult would behave, not a child. We do get more focus on Gracia crying, though.
We get a date on the grave. Hughes was born 1885, making him 29.
Mustang says the same line about human transmutation, but he adds that he understands how the Elrics felt when they did it.
Nothing about him wondering why Hughes didn't tell him the Elrics were in trouble.
Riza explicitly points out it's not raining, which I think dilutes the emotion of the moment.
We end with Mustang investigating, which I believe is covered in the next OG episode. Armstrong can't tell him who the suspects are, so he deduces someone higher up must have issued a gag order. He also deduces from Armstrong telling him the Elrics were in Central but didn't find the Stone that it's related to the Stone, which seems like more of a stretch.
Conclusion
Mustang's taking over Brotherhood again. He's the subject of the beginning and ending, rather than Hughes.
I'd say that plotwise, Brotherhood is tighter here, but OG is stronger tonally. As usual, Brotherhood feels rushed to me. Everything proceeds too fast; we don't get a clear sense of just what Hughes was onto, and as a consequence it makes less sense why the villains are targeting him specifically. OG feels more professionally directed; the cinematography and the flow of the action just work better for me. Hughes revealing a specific important detail also makes this worthwhile to the audience; his death was not in vain.
I find it notable how different the flashback is in OG. There it's a moment of vulnerability and human weakness. Much like Mustang's suicide attempt, it truly shows how affected he is by his sins. In Brotherhood it's just a vehicle to deliver exposition.
The addition of the Ishbal camp scene in OG is probably a controversial move. I can understand people who feel it's distracting, but personally I like having multiple plates spinning in an episode.
It's annoying how much time the villains take killing Hughes, though, in both continuities. Why were they giving him so much time to investigate, when they already knew he knew too much? Why didn't they just have Envy walk up to his office in disguise and shoot him? I get the impression Sloth was trying to lure him away from witnesses in OG, but that shouldn't have been necessary in the first place. This whole thing is framed like they really are outside infiltrators and not controlling the entire government; it's subterfuge for the audience's sake, not for the characters'. Knowing Bradley is also in on it, he could have just, I dunno, arrested Hughes and rushed an execution without trial. “On what charge?” “I’m a dictator, there doesn’t have to be one!” Who’s going to stop him? It’s not like he can even be assassinated!

Runeterra Retcons 3: Warwick
Warwick is one of the oldest champions in League of Legends, having been added all the way back in 2009. As a certain other content creator is fond of saying: “Older League champions were made to embody an archetype, not undermine it.” Warwick was made to be League’s resident werewolf. That’s about where the concept for his character begins and ends. Despite the simplicity of this concept, Warwick has a rather interesting history in that he’s been retconned no less than four different times since his debut.
Luckily for us, his first few lore states are all fairly simplistic, written before a time when champion bios were more than a couple paragraphs long, if that. I’ll include a link to the wiki for those who are curious, but I’ll also do my best to summarize each of prior bios and their respective issues before moving on to the Warwick we now know today.
In his very first bio, Warwick was a mercenary who was pinned down in a cave while trying to defend an Ionian citadel. He made a potion using things he just happened to have on-hand to give himself a strength boost in hopes of turning the tides and saving himself, because he was also an alchemist, apparently. This potion had the nasty side-effect of turning him into a big angry wolf man that let him slaughter his enemies. Warwick then proceeded to just… Return to being a mercenary, I guess, because apparently being a werewolf-for-hire is a very lucrative business.
I don’t think I need to elaborate much on why this version of the lore is lackluster; it offers no context or characterization for Warwick beyond him being a mercenary and an alchemist. The wolf transformation doesn’t even pose any kind of tragedy; if anything, it makes his mercenary career soar, so what’s the issue? It’s a poorly-written bio, but in all fairness, all of League’s lore from those days was kinda bad. Still, Warwick’s was so bad that he was apparently what of the few characters Riot felt the need to retcon even before the 2015 reboot. Let’s see how he handled his next lore, shall we?
Alright, well… That was a thing. Now, I wanna be clear and state that I don’t mean to just roast the writers here; that’s not what Runeterra Retcons is about. Still, it’s… Kinda hard not to make fun of this, let’s be honest. The only thing it does is give a bit more context for Warwick’s alchemical background and change his transformation from a potion gone wrong to a curse, and by Soraka no less. “Ah yes, this human is indirectly killing people with chemicals, so I’ll force him to kill them directly with teeth and claws as a werewolf.” Good… Job?
Obviously, this was from a time when Soraka was new and she didn’t have much of a fleshed-out lore either, though it does introduce the idea of Riot trying to paint a sort of rivalry between the two, as well as attempt to actually make Warwick’s transformation seem like a tragic fate… Even if it’s more tragic for the people he kills than anything.
Alright, third lore. Let’s see how they try to fix him this time.
OK, so, Warwick is no longer a mercenary, but rather a full-time alchemist. He’s the mentor of Singed, another alchemy-themed character, and he worked with Noxus during their campaign on Ionia. Once again, Soraka cursed him into becoming a werewolf as punishment for his crimes, but… Again, he kind of doesn’t seem to care because it ultimately works in his benefit.
Alright, by this point, a pattern is starting to become apparent. Warwick’s transformation into a werewolf is supposed to be tragic; a literal case of him losing his humanity in pursuit of power. In each of his respective bios, though, the transformation never seems to negatively impact Warwick. Turning into a wolf-man pretty-much just makes him stronger and more dangerous than he ever was, and Warwick doesn’t seem to have any desire to turn back; his final bio even says he’s THANKFUL for the transformation.
The werewolf trope is one of the oldest we have in modern storytelling, dating all the way back to Greek myth. It’s a simple concept, really: you are forced to transform into an unholy union of human and dog, driven by primitive instincts to murder and eat other people. It’s really not hard to see how such a transformation can affect someone, ruining their psychological state and causing them to viewed as nothing less than a monster in the eyes of other humans. The typical response to becoming a werewolf is to seek of a cure of some kind; a means to end the curse.
It’s such a simple concept, one of the oldest cliches in the book, and yet they somehow botched it on four separate occasions by making it work completely to Warwick’s benefit. He doesn’t want or need a cure, so… What does he want or need? Simple: he just wants to hunt and kill stuff. While Warwick’s not necessarily the first nor the last character in the game who causes bloodshed merely for the sake of it, there’s no grander purpose behind it. He doesn’t do it for revenge or hatred or even simply to revel in it; he’s just an animal with no clear goals or motivations. It’s not hard to see why Riot kept trying to retcon him, though it’s also kind of hilarious how they kept making the same mistake.
All that being said, there’s another pattern that starts cropping up in Warwick’s lore here: they started trying to connect him more with other Champions over time. First it was Soraka, then Singed. I believe this was done because, since Warwick lacks a clear character arc of his own, Riot had probably been hoping to use him in others’ stories more than his own. By making Soraka a clear-cut enemy he needs to hunt down and making Warwick a teacher/colleague of Singed, it offers more organic opportunities for interactions with fellow Champions. Unfortunately, this story no longer works for a few reasons, not the least of which was the retcon to Soraka and Celestial beings as a whole in the League universe.
Alright, now that we have all of Warwick’s prior backstories out of the way, let’s take a look at his current lore and see, at last, what the Wrath of Zaun brings to the table that the other bios didn’t.
Alright, so here we have the story of a man turned into a monster forcefully through experimentation. Gone is any mention or connection to Soraka, and now Singed is an antagonistic character rather than an ally. I think, conceptually, these changes work, though I still have a number of issues with how this particular version of the story is written.
For one thing, we know basically nothing about Warwick’s actual backstory. He was apparently a criminal seeking redemption for his past deeds, only to SOMEHOW find himself captured by Singed. It feels like Riot didn’t really know what to do with his origin story as a human, so they left it as vague as possible and tried to use the fact that even Warwick doesn’t know his own past to cover that up. While the experiments performed on him are certainly horrendous, it’s harder to sympathize with a character when we don’t actually know. Where did he come from? What did he do as a gangster? Who was the little girl? His daughter? A past victim? The story is meant to evoke pity, but it’s difficult to feel anything but confusion when new questions are raised with nearly every other paragraph.
To that end, let’s talk about the experiment itself. Singed wants to “awaken the beast hidden inside a good man.” What does this mean? It’s… Not clear. It almost sounds like a sort of Joker mentality, trying to prove that anyone can turn evil after just one bad day, except “one bad day” is literal weeks if not months of actually physically trying to turn Warwick into a monster using some unexplained chemicals and augmentations. What was Singed’s actual end-goal here? What did he hope to create? Once again, we don’t really know. He wants to try to transmute a human, but to what end? How did he figure out this method? Can you only transmute “good people?” How does that work?
To me, Warwick’s new bio is frustrating because it feels like they tried to cling onto the whole “man transforms into a werewolf thing” while also attempting to justify the new cyborg elements implemented into his design. This, to me, was the beginning of a larger issue in League’s lore that I like to call: “The Vastaya Problem.”
For those unaware, the Vastaya are basically a race of animal people on Runeterra, like the Faunus in RWBY or the Beastmen from BNA. The Vastaya as a concept were introduced with the addition of Rakan and Xayah, and this new race of animal people was actually a rather ingenious way of retconning multiple characters all at once. See, as mentioned before, Champions back in the day were made to just be stereotypical fantasy races to throw into the game; Nami was the mermaid, Trundle was the troll, Alistar was the minotaur, etc. This, of course, led to a lot of different races and creatures that had basically no representation or explanation beyond the single Champion chosen to represent them, not unlike the Darkin from our previous entry.
For example: Ahri is your kitsune. She was a nine-tailed fox that wanted to be human for some reason, and she effectively became human by just… Wishing for it really hard when she found the body of a dying mage. Rengar was a tiger cub taken in and raised by a hunter, who over time gained a human-like anatomy because… That’s how that works, right? And then there’s Wukong, literally just Wukong from Journey to the West. Born from a magic rock, goes on a quest to become the strongest warrior, you get the idea.
The whole point of the Vastaya was to retcon these animal people into a single, explainable race… Well, maybe not “race” as Riot calls them more of a Genotype with individual types of vastaya being their own race, but you get the idea. Wukong is a monkey Vastaya, Ahri is a fox Vastaya, Rengar is a tiger Vastaya, and so-on. It seemed like this was going to be how they explained all the animal people in the lore (except the Ascended because they were already made into their own thing back in 2015) going forward. The term “Vastaya” was literally made to be a free retcon for the animal-human hybrid champs, and then they just… Kinda… Stopped using it?
Like, take the minotaurs. They’re bull-people. That means they’re Vastaya, right? Well… No. Apparently minotaurs are just their own thing entirely. What about the Ursine, a race of polar bear people in the Freljord? Well, no, see we’re actually turning Volibear into an elemental thunder deity and the Ursine is now just a name for people who follow him. Well… What about Neeko? She’s a chameleon girl Riot added into the game, and she appears to be Vastayan. Is she? Well… Kind of. She’s actually an Oovi-kat, which is like an ancestor race to the Vastaya?
You probably see where I’m going with this. Riot literally gave themselves an out for all the animal people they were going to have to retcon in the new lore, and then just stopped using it. Warwick’s human origins don’t really even factor into his story all that much, so could they not have just made him a wolf Vastayan that Singed captured and experimented on instead? Apparently not, because Riot wanted to keep his human-to-wolfman transformation even in his new lore.
Alright then. If we absolutely MUST keep Warwick’s origins as a human, then I think I can compromise. Without any further ado, and after several rewrites, I present to all: my proposal for how Warwick’s new lore SHOULD have been handled in his newest retcon. Enjoy.
For many, the Noxian invasion of Ionia was a living nightmare. For Warwick, it was an awakening.
Once an Ionian mercenary, Warwick sold his skills to whoever could afford them.  Warwick harbored a talent for hunting down elusive prey, be they human, vastaya, yordle, or even spirits. What fates befell his marks, Warwick neither knew nor cared. It wasn’t long until Warwick himself became a wanted man by Ionia’s elders, but not even the Kinkou Order was able to keep track of his movements for long. Soon, those who knew of Warwick and his reputation began referring to him by another name: The Prowling Wolf.
When the empire of Noxus came to Ionia, Warwick saw it as an opportunity. He offered his skills to both Noxian and Ionian forces alike, profiting from both sides of the war while ensuring his clients remained none-the-wiser. To the Prowling Wolf, this conflict was nothing but a chance to strike it rich. That perspective quickly changed when Warwick bore witness to the horrors of Noxian chemical weapons.
It was meant to be a simple mission: capture a Noxian messenger and bring him to a small resistance force near the coast. The messenger had been carrying information on a new weapon the invaders had brought from overseas, which Warwick was certain Noxian forces would pay well to have returned to them. With the transaction complete, Warwick left the seaside village behind him. An hour later, he heard the screams of the dying carried on the wind.
Warwick watched in horror as the entire village was bombarded by toxic fumes, granting a slow, painful death to everyone within. This, he realized, must be the new Noxian weapon. As Warwick watched the chaos from a distant hillside, he soon spotted the source of the bombardment: a large metal ship drifting in the distant sea. Horrified by this act of extreme cruelty, Warwick realized that he alone now knew the secrets of this Noxian weapon, and vowed to help his countrymen fight against it.
Warwick allied himself with the growing resistance forces that had banded together under Xan Irelia, putting his talents and knowledge of Noxian movements to use as a spy and saboteur. With his aid, the resistance learned that the deadly chemical weapons were produced by a single man: a foreign alchemist called Singed. Determined to put an end to the madman’s production, Warwick led a group to sneak aboard Singed’s ship, aptly named the Deathmaker, and either capture or kill the alchemist.
Things did not go as planned.
Warwick and his allies were skilled, but they had never encountered anything quite like the Chemtech defenses aboard the Deathmaker. One-by-one, Warwick watched his allies fall to mechanical abominations equipped with spinning blades and hoses that spouted searing acid. Soon, Warwick was alone, trapped aboard the mad chemist’s vessel with no hope of escape. As the horrid machines closed in, Warwick felt something awaken within him: a latent power that lay dormant within his bloodline for years.
Miraculously, Warwick’s wounds began to close themselves. A strange bloodlust filled the Prowling Wolf as he fought with inhuman strength and speed, tearing through the Zaunite defenses in pursuit of their twisted maker. He hunted Singed through the metal corridors of the chemist’s own ship, finally cornering his prey in the engine room. Just as Warwick prepared to rend the chemist to shreds, however, a strange feeling of nausea washed over him. Too late, he noticed the canister on Singed’s back, which had been spouting toxic fumes wherever the chemist ran. Warwick had fallen right into Singed’s trap, and the last thing he saw was his adversary’s gaunt frame looming over him, a wicked smile plastered on his skeletal face.
When next Warwick awoke, he found himself strapped to a cold table in a strange room. He recalled only hazy memories of being trapped in a cage and administered strange drugs. Before he could make sense of his surroundings, Warwick saw Singed staring at him from a glass window on the other side of the room. Above him, strange instruments like those that had killed his comrades whirred to life. Warwick demanded to know was happening, yet Singed only replied with a chilling promise: that he would transmute Warwick into the beast within.
For weeks, Warwick’s life became nothing but agony. The Ionian found himself pumped full of strange chemicals as his limbs were replaced with grotesque prosthetics. Warwick begged and pleaded for death, yet Singed only watched on with intrigue as his captive’s body twisted and convulsed. As suspected, Warwick held latent Vastayan genes within him, and Singed was prepared to do whatever he must to awaken them. He was convinced that pain would be the catalyst needed to set the beast free, but in the end, Warwick’s heart gave out before the transformation was complete.
Disappointed, Singed stored Warwick’s body within the depths of his laboratory, convinced the experiment had ended in failure. It was only on the brink of death, however, that Warwick’s latent ancestry finally began to surface, spurred on by the strange chemicals that now replaced his blood. The Ionian’s body twisted and grew, taking on the likeness of his former namesake. In a fit of rage, Warwick burst from his containment and tore apart the lab, escaping into the streets of Zaun below.
Now, Warwick prowls undercity, driven by feral instincts and scattered memories of who he once was. The only thing Warwick recalls clearly is his desire to track down the man who had transformed him, and the Prowling Wolf always finds his prey…
I will be honest here: it’s not my best work. I’ve gone through a couple drafts by this point, but I mainly wanted to show off the general ideas I had for Warwick’s backstory. Is it perfect? No, far from it, but I think it at least illustrates the general themes and ideas that both I and Riot wanted to execute on with Warwick’s new lore.
Firstly, I wanted to expand on Warwick’s whole “criminal-seeking-redemption” thing. He starts as a mercenary willing to play both sides a war to strike it rich, only to form a proper allegiance to Ionian after witnessing the extremes that Noxus will go to for the sake of victory. Of course, I imagine that the turn-around wouldn’t be immediate; it’s more-so the realization that Noxus is willing to kill innocent bystanders and even their own for the sake of victory that makes him realize that they’re just dangerous to fight FOR than against. After three years of witnessing the horrors of these chemical weapons, Warwick slowly but surely becomes more and more devoted to the cause, willing to risk his life to bring down the madman responsible for them.
Now, I concede the that sudden awakening of dormant Vastayan genes might seem like a bit of a cop-out, but here me out. We already have a precedent for mixed human-Vastaya offspring. That’s Sett’s whole deal, after-all. I’d like to think that Warwick himself is a descendant from one such human-Vastayan couple, as I HIGHLY doubt Sett’s parents were the first to intermingle over literal centuries. I mean, Vastaya themselves are said to have been made from humans mingling with shapeshifters, so I don’t think it’s THAT big of a stretch.
I also wanted to elaborate on how and why Singed captured Warwick in the first place. Singed’s entire gameplay gimmick is running away while enemies chase him through a poison trail he leaves behind, and Warwick’s all about pursuing you like a hungry wolf chasing prey. I honestly would have liked to stretch out the chase sequence a bit more, but the bio was getting long-enough as-is and I feel it does a decent job incorporating their respective gameplay styles into the story itself.
Also, I’d like that the dormant Vastayan genes make Singed’s motivation for capturing Warwick infinitely more feasible than just wanting to “awaken the beast inside every good man,” whatever that means. Now, you might be asking how Singed even knows about the Vastaya in the first place, since there aren’t any living in Zaun or Piltover that we know of. Well, the man was aboard a ship just off the coast of Ionia for nearly three years; I’d imagine at some point he might catch wind of things happening on the mainland, which is how he learns of these strange animal people.
Alas, Singed isn’t permitted to leave the ship, as the Noxians need him to keep making bombs and don’t wanna risk Singed getting captured or killed by sending him ashore. Imagine the Mad Chemist’s surprise, then, when a man comes aboard his ship and starts tearing apart his defenses like a feral beast moments before being torn apart himself. From there, it’s just a matter of capturing this man and keeping him contained until Warwick can be brought back to a proper lab in Zaun and experimented on.
The last chance I wanted to make was Warwick just being discarded into the street when the experiment seems to fail. I mean, Singed equipped Warwick with all this undoubtedly very expensive Chemtech, only to literally dump it all in a gutter when the experiment doesn’t work? I mean, I’m no scientist, but I at least know that you’d probably wanna hold onto the failed samples to see what went wrong. Plus, Warwick breaking out makes the story of Singed coming back to find his lab in ruins a lot more plausible, rather than Warwick coming back, wrecking the lab, and then just… Leaving again when he finds out that Singed has left, at least to me.
Warwick is a very simple character with a very complex history. Not many Champions can claim to have undergone so many retcons over the years, and yet Riot has never found a way to give him a backstory that actually works. You can give the first one a bit of a pass, since everything from that era was kind of sloppy, but the 2015 reboot was Riot’s chance to finally give Warwick something more cohesive, and just… Messed it up again. I’m not saying you HAVE to make him a Vastayan, but so much of his current lore raises so many questions that it doesn’t even try to answer.
It’s honestly very similar to the issues I have with Thresh’s rework: the story is more concerned about rushing to tell us how Warwick became what it is that it doesn’t seem concerned with fleshing out who or what he was before the transformation. In the end, it ultimately feels like the bio was written to explain why Warwick went from being a normal werewolf to CYBORG werewolf, and no other thought was put into it aside from that.

Historical Processes

 Research Paper – Wet Collodion
Every photographer is unique. Everyone has a different perspective on how or why something is worth photographing. In the basics of photography, there are two main options: film or digital. Within each of these realms, all sorts of creative choices can be made. However, photography, like anything else, has a history. Unlike other histories, however, photography has a tactile history. From Talbot’s photogenic drawings to mirrorless cameras, the discovery of photography has taken years. In particular, the process of wet collodion stands out. This paper will give a brief outline of what wet plate photography is, discuss two photographers who work in the medium, and what they do similarly and differently.
Wet plate photography is somewhat simple. In this case, collodion is floated onto either a tin plate or glass plate, sensitized to light with a silver nitrate solution, and then placed into a plate holder. The caveat to this process, versus using color or black and white large format film, is that the chemistry must remain wet in order for the image to exist. In other terms, once the plate has been sensitized, it must be exposed and developed before the chemistry dries—roughly three minutes time for the placement into the camera, exposure, and development. The result is an image that has no grain, is somewhat temporary and incredibly fragile.
This process is mostly often recognizable by the chemical imperfections—swirls and holes in the chemistry—and by the classic portraiture usage. Due to the fact that it must remain wet, oftentimes, the darkroom and camera must be close enough to each other that the chemistry will not dry.
Photographer Alex Timmermans is one of the few that still works in collodion. He calls himself, like many historical processes’ artists, an Alchemist. His exception, however, is the fact that he takes it out into the world. He is not chained down by the fact that the chemistry must remain wet because he has figured out a mobile darkroom. He remains consistent in his use of portraiture; which is important when discussing a historical process. In today’s day and age, the reality is that it is unnecessary to use these processes. For Timmermans, he remains true to the medium by doing portraiture, but places his new modern twist by taking it into the world and creating fairytale-like images. What should also be noted about Timmermans is that he works solely in collodion, or historical processes.
Another notable photographer is Ian Ruhter. Like Timmermans, he also takes his collodion work into the world. His niche: the plates are often times huge. He works with approximately sixteen by twenty-inch glass plates in a mobile darkroom that he created from an old van, and creates nature images. His plates are known for being one of a kind and larger than life. It is difficult to compare the works of these two artists because they are so distinct. They work in the same medium, however, they could not be more different. For Ruhter, most of the excitement from his work—while incredible—seems to be more around the size and process of making the plates. His work is also one of a kind—there are no doubles, so to speak. While he also works with the tradition of portraiture, his work is more closely related to nature and the magnitude of the plates. As for Timmermans, his plates are also originals, but remain in medium and large format. For that reason, he seems to be more successfully following the tradition of wet collodion.
Wet plate photography, like most analog photographic methods, is a dying art. The effort that was once required in order to be a successful photographer has shifted tremendously, and the beauty of analog work has begun to dissipate. It is strange to many people that there are existing images that do not have pixels. In the case of wet plate collodion, not only are there no pixels, but there is also no grain, making it stand out from traditional analog film photography. The plates, if done on glass, can be enlarged to any size without losing quality. Collodion hold many characteristics that are irreplaceable in today’s photographic world, and while it may still be a historical process, it can still be modified in many ways, and Ruhter and Timmermans are only a couple of those examples.

Greubel Forsey timepieces are just more than exceptional timepieces. The brand raises watchmaking at the level of art. Their watches arouse emotions beyond the conscious intellect. I invite you to read an essay about the art of watchmaking sent by the Greubel Forsey team.
Double Balancier
Différentiel d’Égalité
“And beauty? It exists, without its existence seeming, at first glance, the least bit necessary. It is there in an omnipresent way, insistent, penetrating, all the while giving the impression of being superfluous. That is its mystery: there it is, before our eyes, the greatest mystery.” – François Cheng, The Way of Beauty, Five Meditations for Spiritual Transformation.

To understand the philosophy behind Greubel Forsey timepiece, it is imperative to have first glimpsed the beauty of the tiny components that become invisible once the movement is assembled, to have observed the care with which they have been crafted, polished and enhanced. The creation of a Greubel Forsey timepiece – ‘creation’ being the operative word rather than ‘production’, even though it takes place in a watchmaking workshop – is a kind of alchemist’s process of which each stage involves evolution and transformation. The initial idea takes shape on paper, with the original sketch consistently done by hand. At Greubel Forsey, everything revolves around the hand, at each creative stage. Passed from hand to hand, from a manually operated machine to a polishing tool, each component is ‘elevated’ as the hand progressively enhances its inherent characteristics.

At the heart of the Atelier beats a spirit akin to the Neoplatonism of the Medici era: a reflection on beauty regarded as the result of the human touch, itself induced by thought. Within this process lies the very essence of Greubel Forsey hand craftsmanship. A hand-made approach does not preclude mechanical aspects, as the machine is an extension of the human hand at Greubel Forsey. One of its workshops houses a set of venerable hand-operated machines, some of them more than a century old. Take the jig borer, for example, a top-flight precision machine and a champion in its category that caught the attention of the Greubel Forsey workshop artisans. Out of a thousand different machines, one of them stands out from the rest, and such is precisely the case with this jig borer made by the SIP (Société d’Instruments de Physique). Fortunately, there are passionately dedicated individuals prepared to spend time restoring them. These quintessentially traditional machine tools are used to create a maximum of ten timepieces per year.
Différentiel d’Égalité back view
Double Balancier back view
What truly counts is not the age of these pieces of equipment, nor their exceptional capabilities, but above all how they are handled. Everything lies in this handling: if no artisan knows how to operate these complex machines, they sit idle and unable to express their qualities. It takes between ten and 15 years of practice to really know how to operate them, and using these tools to make a part can take 50 to a 100 times longer than on a CNC machine. But time is an ally rather an enemy at Greubel Forsey, and what really counts is safeguarding skills rather than worrying about time ticking away. In an age of robotics, the Atelier is committed to perpetuating these 19th century horological traditions at all costs, as a means of preserving the very soul of watchmaking.

As Stephen Forsey points out: “While technology is fantastic and affords us countless possibilities, it is only a tool in the same way as a pencil, a graver or a screwdriver. It can become a prison from which one must escape in order to return to hand workmanship. Traditional watchmaking lasted until around 1870, when mechanical production methods came on the scene in order to make watches more widely accessible. However, this approach tended to obliterate craftsmanship. The electronic watch freed the mechanical watch from its utilitarian role and enabled the rebirth of mechanical watchmaking as an expression of creativity. While we have been able to implement some of the modern tools available, we are fortunate enough today to still find a few artisans who wish to make parts by hand. This is a new phenomenon. We now have the possibility of creating a hand-crafted timepiece with a degree of precision that would have been unthinkable 150 years ago.”
Différentiel d’Égalité
It takes desire and impetus to drive excellence in all fields. Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey work towards perfecting that which remains unseen, above all for the sake of their art. What would otherwise be the point of pushing a concern for craftsmanship to such dizzy heights? Nobody, apart from their team and themselves, knows the enigmatic splendour of the invisible components concealed at the heart of their movements. Not even the owner of the timepiece. Perhaps he or she should indeed visit the Atelier in order to gain a clearer idea of the miniature miracle that has found its place on their wrist. Each technical draughtsman, specialised artisan, watchmaker and hand finisher works with the same almost sacred fervour, all engaged in the quest for ultimate beauty. Is this sheer madness, or a form of wisdom?
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Dialogue is a watchword at Greubel Forsey, whether between movement designers and constructors or between the hand finisher and the different workshops. Each element must be studied in the minutest detail so as to achieve absolute – or almost absolute – perfection, if one modestly considers that the latter is not of this world.
Double Balancier
This is a quest that is ongoing, endless and involves a path of humility, a mindset found in every workshop. It is perhaps this blend of passion, pride and the quest for perfection that makes the Atelier so unique. The Greubel Forsey artisans ply their craft in a spirit of profound respect for what comes before and after their intervention. The workshops are pervaded by a uniquely keen awareness that each task performed can influence the past and future of the component. When it comes to assembly, each watchmaker must handle the parts without deforming or scratching them, tightening screws without damaging them, all in order to avoid destroying the work of the previous artisan, while elevating each component to the pinnacle of excellence. Assembling such a timepiece takes 10 to 20 times longer for Greubel Forsey watchmakers than for any other. Regardless of the time and expense involved in achieving the desired result, Greubel Forsey deliberately treads the path of virtue leading to exceptional results, with each stage marking a milestone in its own right.
Différentiel d’Égalité
Take the example of movement decoration: at Greubel Forsey, almost all parts of each mechanism are made in the Atelier. Before reaching the hand finisher, each undergoes multiple operations designed to ensure they reach the decoration workshop unblemished. From smallest to largest, each component carries a high emotional charge. Some parts are also decorated in the assembly workshop, for the finishing touches. This requires absolute precision at all stages. Every component – all the way down to the smallest screw, and whether visible or not – is painstakingly corrected by hand. A skilled decorator will ’fashion the part to make it even more beautiful. The angles might be less regular, than when done by machine, but it will be slightly profiled at one end so as to create the illusion of perfection of the proportions. All of this stems from interactions between the brain, eye and hand. Just as in the universe at large, it is asymmetry that creates beauty. At Greubel Forsey, the quest for perfection thus also takes the path of imperfection.
Différentiel d’Égalité
Différentiel d’Égalité
One of the signature Greubel Forsey finishes is mirror polishing (also called black polishing). Historically, watchmakers used mirror polishing to avoid corrosion: the more polished a surface, the less likely it is to rust. Today, this technique is a token of extreme quality. At Greubel Forsey, the polishing of the angles is finished with a gentian stem which has an especially soft core. Mirror polishing is about playing with light. The surface of the part is polished until the reflection itself turns black. It sometimes takes up to four hours of polishing to achieve this result. The artisan must be capable of stopping just in time to avoid scratching the part, which is a matter of expertise and experience. All the senses are alert, since even a tiny noise is enough to signal whether one has gone too far or reached the goal. “It’s a matter of excellence guided by the intelligence of the hand”, says Robert Greubel. “We are motivated by the fact that we simply cannot make a timepiece any other way, given the level of excellence for which we consistently aim. We strive to endow our creations with a face that represents us.”
Double Balancier
When Robert Greubel evokes “a face that represents us”, he is referring to the very origins of the two watchmakers’ training, for therein lies the source of this quest. “When Stephen and I were at watchmaking school, we made components by hand: baseplates, bridges and wheel trains. And when one is accustomed to manually crafting components, it’s as if one were wielding a brush with our own palette of colours: it becomes part of our very being. Hand craftsmanship is where our story began. When we first created our Atelier, there was no team as there now is and it was just the two of us, which meant we had to do everything ourselves. When other artisans joined us, we were able to show them what we wanted to achieve with the visual support of actual parts. The first timepiece presented at Baselworld in 2004, the Double Tourbillon 30°, was not a prototype: it was entirely finished, ready for sale and complete with its presentation box. What the Atelier Greubel Forsey now is, and will become, mirrors what Stephen and I truly are. The logical evolution would be to take hand craftsmanship even further, to its ultimate conclusion. But that’s another story…”
Différentiel d’Égalité
Choosing a Greubel Forsey timepiece means encouraging a determined concern for perfection at all stages of development and betting on human genius. It implies knowing that the timepiece on your wrist is unique, because the hand never performs the exact same move twice. It also involves accepting that some truths are bound to remain hidden.

This review consists of three parts, the Nintendo attention span five hundred word version, my attempt at identifying imbrications with the work, and a TL;DR analysis of Cooper Wilhelm's work situated between the poles of materialist investigation and a pre-historical ghost forest.
Dumbheart Stupidface will be released on 11/13/2017 on the Coping Mechanisms imprint.
THE FIVE HUNDRED WORD REVIEW OF COOPER WILHELM’S DUMBHEART STUPIDFACE
Cooper’s trademark humor is present from the third stanza. Is that a bourgeois thing to say? It’s true.Within the humor, or between it rather, is also emotion expressed in gentle observations. Ephemeral objects of memory like a “light thrown across the table like a scarf...” a thing we’ve all seen and that could be from anytime, but Wilhelm’s lines are decidedly from this time.
The first trope we find in Dumbheart Stupidface is one of necromancy. That is the first thread - a death positive / negative / positivity. There are graves from the very beginning, but graves alongside that kind of life that I can’t write anymore, because I’m old and the patterns are already set. The exploring of the rows and secret Masonic patterns between gravestones are for new poets, like Cooper.
The first bit that I really liked though, was the poem Hummock Bark. I dig the lyrical not-palindrome title play when it happens right. DHSF (is that better? Are acronyms ever better or just cryptic) get’s this bit right.
It isn’t until this poem that you see what’s new, what Wilhelm is bringing to the table, right. Hummock Bark begins the dance with enchantment and a haunting of the twenty-first century that is a continuation of the late nineteenth early twentieth century occult fictionalists. Hummock Bark brings the lyrical play together with the necromantic palor that mists the rest. It doesn’t wane, the momentum continues from this point, quickly, like a made for streaming binge series no longer the Kubrick longshot of last centuries poetry.
What’s missing then, because the perfect Borgesian book of verse has not been written yet, or ever, to be sure. What is missing from DHSF (its growing on me but likely blasphemy, I mean there is a reason poets give their books titles). What’s missing is self, but we find the self in others through elegant abstraction; that tool is sharp in Cooper's bag. The bad joke that goes on too long in 4 AM is punctuated with striking, near (appropriated word use alert) shamanic imagery of holding a heated stone in the mouth of a man we don’t know yet. Something is missing, but it is the same thing that is missing from so much poetry, so it places the work among its peers, which isn’t bad. And like I said, the humor is a larger part of Wilhelm.
Dumbheart Stupidface is built like a talisman of warning.
It’s text tells us nothing we can use rationally, its metadata is the pulse of the jugendstil and an endearing unwillingness to paint the world in Pointillist sketches, which we find is decidedly too our benefit.
IMBRICATIONS
Right, so I’m a middle aged white guy that lives in a midwestern suburb. I’m not going to pretend that I’m tuned into the kind of fast lane glitzy Brooklyn radio host wizard scene that Cooper Wilhelm is privy to. I do have some analogs that I think fit his aesthetic, though, that I’ve seen and filed away (read: stole from other young persons like a ghoul after unbaptized babies).
The Imbrications for my review of Dumbheart Stupidface are almost a type of Stranger Things Upside Down version of the New York witchscene that birthed, as they hail from across the country in the Emerald City of San Francisco.
My sister-in-law, the extra-talented founder of Handfast Hotel, posted some videos of her friends, the group Vanwave, awhile back. The ambience they create in these videos layer very closely over Wilhelm’s work, although their tones come through as blue and dead-lost in the forest green where DHSF gives me more of an sulfur Dante-undead-in-the-mist-orange feeling.
Check ‘em out and let me know if you think I hit the mark.
THE TL;DR
Dumbheart Stupidface is a statement, of sorts, but a statement that plants its feet in dogma / antidogma - in short, DHSF is an irreverent skeleton of a creed. Let's not get confused about this, however. I'm not suggesting the DHSF is the doctrine for a new amoebic religion. Let us listen to our poetic elders speak in 'This Craft of Verse' from Jorges Luis Borges:
“I think of all poetic theories as being mere tools for the writing of a poem. I suppose there should be as many [poetic] creeds, as many religions, as there are poets.”
So each poet is their own creed, and Cooper is no exception. If then, we are to operate under this assumption, what is the truth of Wilhelm's doctrine? We have mentioned the mask of humor and the impressionist sketches, but aren't these just the pointy hats and gilded golf carts of the work? As in most religions, we only gather glimpses of the truth among the trappings. We see the shape of this truth when Cooper writes:
“He tries to stand up from the bed     to shave or find a window, to call out     or find a corner to be alone     with thoughts of what he’s done or the marketplace or you.
Oh, but he is lost at sea.
The cloth of our white sails will fill your cups, set your tables, block     the light of your bright windows, all your days.”
The creed of DHSF is a man inside himself. A religion of solitude expressed through observation of the world he is not fully a part of. Wilhelm sketches himself as a human metaphor. Before beginning an analysis of the more ancient forms of poetry, Borges offers a method through which we can begin to understand Cooper, and indeed, the new witchy generation altogether. Again from 'This Craft of Verse'
“I would like to take some stock patterns of metaphor. I use the word ‘pattern’ because the metaphors I will quote will be to the imagination quite different, yet to the logical thinker they would be almost the same.”
Patterns of metaphor, layered over patterns of biology and sociology in a world where only the maleficicent have coping options. Without these tools, Wilhelm warns us, the meaning in the patters begin to break down:
"How much of the message of your DNA     will your kid remember as his face,     as how she walls her hands around a paper cup     of vending machine coffee in a hospital cafeteria slash gift shop?"
Pattern of biology and patterns of language...
Borges is certainly an outpost in our haunted forest. What does Cooper's work look like through the materialist lens? For this, we visit the mid-twentieth century linguist, Benjamin Whorf, and his seminal work, 'Language, Thought, and Reality'. In this work, Whorf talks about our duality of lenses, framing them instead as a 'form-plus-substance' dichotomy and a 'common sense' view:
“From the form-plus-substance dichotomy the philosophical views most traditionally characteristic of the ‘Western World’ have derived huge support. Here belong materialism, psychophysical parallelism, physics — at least in its traditional Newtonian form — and dualistic views of the universe in general. Indeed here belongs almost everything that is ‘hard, practical common sense.’ Monistic, holistic, and relativistic views of reality appeal to philosophers and some scientists, but they are bad handicapped in appealing to the ‘common sense’ of the Western average man — not because nature herself refutes them (if she did, philosophers could have discovered this much), but because they must be talked about in what amounts to a new language.”
We see this blend in my aforementioned favorite piece in the work, Hummock Bark. Look closely at the stanzas that follow, the punctuating consonant are an analog to Newtonian physics, but the quality and context of the words peel back the folkloric 'common sense' beneath. We see a spirit list of geological substances, of crystals and magically adjacent minerals. In Hummock Bark, Cooper approaches Whorf's new language, a holism of the real and unreal.
“I met Broomhilda milking spiders in the holy den,     making naked worship on low-hung branches,     peeling newts and bones.     Stones of quality, unlike the others in wood,     plagioclase, aplite, feldspar, litchfieldite,     obsidian, breccia, marl,     adakite, granophyre     were our hungry bed.”
The desert of the real, where of course our materialist is located, is such a contrast to our ghost forest. The dangers of both are extreme, but what of the liminal space in between. That half-savanna, half-timber space where the denizens of both worlds meet? This is where myth is born, where man and monster dance. If we are to view Dumbheart Stupidface through our polar lenses, where is it situated, if not in this area of natural dissociation. We've heard from the worldpoet Borges and from the inveterate participant observer, Whorf. Who rules the in-between, except for the Chief Alchemist, the maker of mineral to myth as we see in Hummock Bark, Carl Jung.
I've pulled a quote from Jung's alchemical treastise, Aion, that might help us understand Wilhelm and his new books place in the borderlands:
"Myths and fairy tales give expression to unconscious processes, and their retelling causes these processes to come alive again and be recollected, thereby re-establishing the connection between conscious and unconscious. What the separation of the two psychic halves means, the psychiatrist knows only too well. He knows it as dissociation of the personality, the root of all neuroses: the conscious goes to the right and the unconscious to the left. As opposites never unite at their own level… a supra ordinate ‘third’ is always required, in which the two parts can come together.”
Work in this third place, this metaphysical coffee house, is required so that we can gain a better understanding of the extremes.
At the end of my video-game-attention-span version of this review, I make the claim that Cooper has built his book in the way one constructs a talisman. I'd like to clarify that point here. Peter J. Carroll, the first Chaos Magician (where does he sit in our cosmology of references?), has insight into this process in his work, Liber Null:
“Sorcery is the art of using material bases to effect magical transformations… Four main types of material base are used. Those which contain reserves of a particular type of power such as fetishes, talismans, spirit traps and amulets… Talismans, amulets and fetishes are charged by a process analogous to evocation. Talismans are usually the recipient of some simple charge that evokes strength, courage, health, virility, no-mind, sleep, or some other emotion… If the talisman is well enough made, it should continue to evoke its effect even when it is not being used for concentration…”
Once one reads through Dumbheart Stupidface, the talismanic effect is obvious. We see all of the magical powers Carroll mentions in these stanzas; strength, courage, health, virility, no-mind, sleep... They are all present. We are even given the materials of construction, as is proper in any grimoire worth its ink:
"A copper cross hung just so     as good luck to keep the babies out. Oppenheimer kept     a horseshoe nailed at its arms above his door     like lamb’s blood, said,     “They tell me it works     even if you don’t believe in it.”     He was maybe unaware     that the tradition is a Wiccan way     to bring the Horned Man into the house.     More than unaware, which is to say,     beyond caring, already become     so much more than death."
With these materials, it might even be possible to create an iteration of this book, a magical experiment bent to our own will. With Borges in our forest, and Whorf in our desert, Jung in our border lands, than must Carroll hover above our borderlands as a representative of the patternless cloudscape. To complete our cosmology, let us look beneath the mythical ground of this analysis, let us travel to the underworld in order to view the work from all sides.
As our guide, I've chosen another psychologist, James Hillman, and his work 'The Dream and the Underworld'. In this truly fantastic book, Hillman helps us define what he calls the 'dream-work' and those archetypes that help build this chthonic space:
“Let us imagine the dream-work to be an activity, less of a censor than of a bricoleur. Censors suggest morals, or they implicate us in spies, codes and detection. But the dream bricoleur is a handyman, who takes the bits of junk left over from the day and potters about with them, tacking residual things together in a collage… Death is the scrap dealer, stripping the world for spare parts, separating, destroying connections…”
Cooper is our bricoleur, piecing together the post-modern fragments of our geomantic spirit list, of the unknown but immediate goals of the young in the twenty-first century, of the Western Magical Diaspora. While this view of dreams and dream-work is 'practically' problematic, it is not poetically problematic and might even be poetically necessary.
I'll close this TL;DR with a final few stanzas from Dumbheart Stupidface that touch every being in our analytical cosmology:
"18.9 hertz is hidden in a tiger’s roar and hearing it reminds us   death swoops down to meet us like a pigeon   leaving the top shelf of a bookcase in a haunted mansion   owned by a deceased uncle we never met but who left it to us   on the condition we risk our lives inside it for just one night   at which point we earn the right to risk our lives inside it until we die”
