“Wait, Then! Wait up! You’re going too fast!”
A child with blackthorn hair and dirt-stained skin smirked as he turned, shouting, “The sunrise will not wait for you, Li! Get a move on! Let’s go!” Calloused fingers gripped onto hanging scraps of metal, and toes were peeking out of shoes that stepped onto wobbling platforms. “We’re so close, I could taste it! I could smell it! I could--”
“--are you mistaking this wretched stench of junk for dawn? Is this what dawn smells like to you, Thenry? Garbage?” The statement was voiced by a boy noticeably younger, and blatantly tired from their excursion.
“Adventure, Elias; the unknown. You think it’s gonna be peaches and daisies?”
“What are you talking about? We see this everyday.. Why is today different?”
“‘Cos we’re going somewhere. Just trust me. C’mon.”
And so the children hurried, and climbed towers of loose boxes and other debris. They were among robot parts, and crates; literal dumpsters and wooden planks. Their ascend ended at least four stories high on a slab of rock threatening to fall, all because a boy said, ‘Just trust me.’
At the top, Thenry finally exclaimed, “Yes!”
“What?” Elias heaved, placing his hands on his knees as he caught his breath. “Are we here?”
“Yes! Look at it! Look at the sun! This is it! This is it!”
While he appreciated his friend’s enthusiasm, Elias subtly cocked his head in confusion. His eyebrows furrowed as he gazed ahead, but then it softened at the sight of the sun peeking its way over the hills of odds and ends. The mountains of waste turned into a silhouette, getting lost in the gold and shine of the light; the reds, orange, and yellows. He couldn’t help but take a seat, dangling his legs over the edge as he glanced up at the one who led him there. He was untamed and ridiculous; grand and absurd, but.. his best friend.
“So, what’s the occasion?”
“We’re going to make a pact.”
“What?”
“We’re going to be great,” Thenry began, taking a seat, himself. As he spoke, his eyes flickered like amber, revealing just a glimpse of the wonders that went on his head. He was a boy that was always faraway; always there, but never here. For him, the gears never ceased to turn, and at that moment, it was as though hours of thought finally culminated a plan that would change their future.
“I’m going to tell you everything, but promise me something first..”
The hesitancy was out of character, but Elias slowly nodded.
“Anything. What is it?”
“Promise me.. we’ll always be friends. For the rest of our lives. You and me. This can only work with you and me.”
As the sun gleamed down upon them, they clapped their hands and affirmed their promise with a shake.
“I promise.”
And it was then, did Thenry avert his gaze from the sunrise to the gun that was pointed to his head. His heart was pounding, and he felt faint, but didn’t dare let it show. Everything he had ever wanted was gone -- success, fame, and fortune. He wasn’t great; he wasn’t happy.
He had nothing but a bullet waiting for him at the end of a barrel.
His world had come tumbling down just moments after he thought he reached the top.
“At least it’s a nice sunrise,” he mused, looking over Elias’s shoulder, desperate to calm his nerves for what was about to happen next. The memory of their time together came to him in waves, much like the roaring oceans of his home. They were harsh; they crashed into him with a fury that caused him to feel weak in his chest. Did I fail him, too?
Why did I fail you, too?
And you, he thought of Jonas, a man whom he whisked away with the promise of ‘adventure’ -- he always promising adventure. And you, he thought of Emery, a brother whom he never was there for; whom he never knew existed up until five years ago. Where did the time go?
And you, he looked at her.. expression initially apologetic, but gradually transforming into peace.
I deserve this.
He saluted.
I have nothing.
He mouthed, ‘I love you.’
I’m sorry.
The gunshot sounded.

Canopic Jar and Cover of Tjuli, ca. 1279-1213 B.C.E., Brooklyn Museum: Egyptian, Classical, Ancient Near Eastern Art
One of four alabaster canopic jars of the Royal Scribe and Chief lector priest, Thenry. Jars of tall, slender form swelling out at the shoulders and then in to neck. Front of each jar decorated with incised panel running almost entire height of body. On upper part of each panel Thenry stands to right worshipping a standing representation of the same god as represented on cover. Inscriptions: one row above reliefs, one column between reliefs, and four columns below figures. Covers in form of heads of Sons of Horus. Each fitted with collar with interior of cover partially hollowed out. Remains of color. Condition: Excellent. Scattered natural defects in stone probably originally filled with plaster. Front base of cover of Duamutef chipped. Most of color lost
