Polin Drabble: Wallow
Chapter 20 - Wallow aka The one where Anthony and Benedict are too old for this sh*t
----
Penelope so wanted to stand here and wallow in self-pity but she had to put up a facade of joy in the face of the new Viscountess.
“I think they make a most agreeable match, don’t you Miss Featherington?”
“Oh yes, indeed,” Penelope has had enough practice to not let her smile become a grimace.
On the dance floor, Edwina Sharma and Colin Bridgerton danced with joy on their faces. Their laughter carried past the two women as Colin twirled Edwina, his eyes focused on his dance partner.
It felt a little like Marina all over again.
She had gotten closer to the younger Sharma sister due to their love of literature, so much so that they would find themselves spending a large amount of time at the Sharma’s new home in Mayfair or in Penelope’s residence. It was not yet the closeness she had once had with Eloise but it was very nice to have a female companion once again who she could have interesting conversations with.
It was one of times they were walking behind the Viscount and his wife that Colin walked over to say hello. He had just recently returned from a trip abroad and was sporting a tan on his now scruffy face.
His laughter rang out as Anthony quipped ahead of them about unkept brothers. Her heart hurt to look at him due to the words she had overheard last season but it did not stop it from racing at seeing his handsome countenance.
She had kept to herself as Colin and Edwina bantered beside her. She could not help that feeling of dread in her heart as she looked at Colins singular focus on her new friend. It got worse when she caught Kate looking at the two with interest.
Later, Colin would stand beside her as he looked on at Edwina leaving with her mother. “Miss Sharma is quite beautiful isn’t she Pen?”
With his eyes still on Edwina, Colin did not see the hurt flash on her face.
“She was last season’s diamond after all,” She tried to answer nonchalantly.
“That she was. Pen do you think it would be improper for me to court Miss Sharma?” His gaze finally turned and looked at Penelope,” After all, she was engaged to my brother.”
She bit the inside of her lip to keep her composure before replying,“ Would that stop you if you felt a connection with her Colin?”
“I suppose not,” He turned his gaze back at the retreating lady.
Penelope blinked quickly to bat away any tears that were starting to fill her eyes and swallowed quickly before continuing,” Your happiness is important too. If Miss Sharma is a lady you can imagine yourself courting then you are already halfway there in your decision. As you said, she is beautiful and it looked like the interest is reciprocated.”
Seeing Anthony make his way to his wife, Penelope made her excuses to Kate, and with one last look at the happy couple, Penelope turned away and made her way to the gardens.
Alone in the quiet silence she could finally let herself cry. She had replayed Colins words inside of her head multiple times every day since that night and she thought that she could shed no more tears over him, yet here she was crying over Colin Bridgerton.
“Is this a way for you to punish yourself for your sins?” A female voice interrupted Penelope’s soft cries.
Wiping her face quickly and with her heart on her throat, Penelope turned around to see Eloise standing just a couple feet from her.
She has been the best of friends with the taller girl for years so she knew the look of concern hidden behind sneer.
She drank up the sight of Eloise, she had missed her dear friend so very much. “I am so sorry for my words to you from when we last spoke, I said things in anger that I did not mean and I hurt you. I am so sorry Eloise,” Penelope took a step towards her.
Eloise crossed her arms in front of her before waving off her words,” So, will you be writing about it for tomorrows papers?”
She looked at her in confusion,”Write…?”
“My brother and Miss Edwina Sharma,”Eloise raised an eyebrow,” You know, the man you love?”
Penelope froze and looked at Eloise in terror. It seems that the other girl had a penchant for finding out her deepest secrets.
“Don’t look so surprised, you didn’t hide it very well,” the taller girl rolled her eyes then sighed,” The only one who probably doesn’t know is my oblivious brother, himself.”
“Eloise…I..I..I…,” Some writer she was.
“…am in love with Colin Bridgerton. Yes we’ve already concluded that,”Eloise face was like a marble stone,” You really are a coward aren’t you. You stand there looking like you are a victim to his cruelness when he doesn’t even know of the depth of your feelings for him.”
Penelope took a deep breath to center herself,” I know that Colin would never look upon me as a woman much less turn his eyes to court me. Trust me I know, I heard him say so - much to his friends delight last season.”
At that, tears fell silently on her face which Penelope wiped just as quickly. There was a crack in Eloise’s icy exterior.
“What are you talking about?”
“I was looking for you that night to apologize when I overheard Colin with Lord Fife and his entourage of gentlemen. It seems that one would have to be MAD to court me. Laughable too. So yes, I know your brothers feelings well when it comes to this matter. I hold no hopes or illusions otherwise. “
“Yet you still love him?” Now Eloise sighed.
“…yet I still love him,” Penelope looked at her friend sadly.
“He’s an idiot,”The other girl frowned.
“ But a handsome one,” Penelope grinned softly to lighten up the mood.
Eloise made a face of revulsion,” Well, your view on that matter is both disgusting and objectable.”
“You are erroneous about the former but your opinions of the latter is understandable,” Penelope nodded before her face dropped again,”My love for Colin, I find, is quite enduring with no hopes of it being reciprocated. He doesn’t even see me as a woman. I do not count. I am …Penelope.”
“What does that even mean?”Eloise starts to tap her left foot impatiently.
“It means that when it comes down to it, your brother would never …could never imagine me as someone he could love with a passion. It’s not even that he finds me lacking in some way, I’m sure. Eloise, I do not doubt his platonic affections towards myself, it is simply that I could not ever be even considered comparable to the likes of Marina Thompson and Edwina Sharma because he simply does not see me in that light.”
Eloise was now looking off to the side but Penelope continued, “I hold no ill will or resentment towards him. He was being truthful that night and at least I now know for sure where he stands. I still wish him happiness and for his love to be returned to him tenfold.“
Silence stretched between them.
“As I said, my brother is an idiot.” Penelope saw that Eloise was not looking at her but over her shoulder - behind her. She felt her eyes widen as she gasped. Not wanting to know but needing to know - Penelope turned around with fear as her heart started to race.
And then she wanted whatever deity or higher power there was out there to strike her down, have the earth swallow her whole, or better yet for her to just disappear into thin air as her eyes locked onto green ones.
NOPE.
Eloise was most definitely correct in her assessment of Penelope it seems.
This was her thought as her feet made haste to put as much distance between her and Colin Bridgerton.
She WAS a coward.
Finally luck was on her side as she hopped into a carriage to take her home. She looked back briefly to see that his long strides almost caught up to her before he stopped in the realization that he could not catch up to her now.
Penelope dropped her face to her hands and wished this night never happened.
——
Penelope tossed and turned all night, dreading the morning.
How long has he been standing there? What did he hear? What he must be thinking now?
She was mortified.
Maybe if she asked nicely, her Mama would let her move in with a very distant aunt in Scotland?
And so she waited, all day.
Nothing.
Colin has made himself perfectly clear with his words so Penelope could not understand why she thought or hoped he would come.
One day, stretched into two and before she knew it - it’s been a week and neither he nor Eloise came to visit.
Penelope had feigned sickness and has been able to convince her Mama that going to another ball in her constitution would not look well for the family.
And so they went, leaving Penelope at home alone.
It was quite late and so she dismissed the staff as she knew her Mama and Prudence would not be home until the early hours of the morning.
She was on her bed trying to read a book to keep her mind preoccupied when she heard a muffled curse. She stopped to look up and easily dismissed it. Going back to her book before another muffled curse rang out - this one a little louder. Finally putting the book down, Penelope stood up and made her way to her window.
It was then she heard a loud whisper, “Colin! Get down here!” And an arm startled her as it came inside from her opened window.
“Colin! (Muffle curses)”
Colin’s inebriated and grinning face popped up as his other hand grabbed the windowsill,” Pen!” He was looking at her as if he was both surprised and pleased to see her face.
Oh good God!
Penelope rushed to help him get inside before the DAMN fool fell from the tree branch that he was precariously standing on.
He fell inside in an uncoordinated and disheveled heap on her bedroom floor.
“Colin Bridgerton!” The male voice outside was now frantic.
Penelope peeked her head out of the window to see Benedict, looking quite inebriated himself, looking down on the ground as he ruffled his hair in frustration.
Arms wrapped around her middle pulled her back in and with a yelp she tried to dislodge herself from its grip.
“You smell so nice, Pen!” She felt Colins breath above her ear just before she felt him use his cheek to nuzzle the same space.
“Colin, this is highly inappropriate,” Penelope placed her hands on his arms that was wrapped around her middle to pry them off of her when he continued to talk.
“But you always smell good. Pen..Penny..Pen Pen..Pennnn-elope. I’ve missed you. I wish I could put you in my pocket and take you with me when I travel. I’m sure you’d appreciate that places I’ve been to more than anyone else. My Pen, my Penelope,” with that, Colin started to sway behind her as if they were dancing to a song only he could hear.
“I am too old for this…”(muffled curses from outside, a thud, then a groan)
“…Colin,” Penelope whispered. The air around them felt too intimate.
She felt his arms loosen before she was spun around, his hands now on her shoulders as he peered down at her. His green eyes searching her face and it made her self-conscious and highly aware that she was wearing her night chemise.
“Pen, you love me? Truly?” He was looking at her in wonder.
She kept silent as he lifted a finger to tuck an errant curl behind her ear, then drag the same finger from the side of cheek, down to her jaw, and rest under her chin. His thumb now lightly caressing her lips.
She licked her lips in nervousness and saw his pupils dilate - his dark gaze flicked back up to her eyes before going back to her lips.
“What do you mean he’s bloody inside her room!” Anthony’s unmistakable voice from outside pierced the silence.
Her eyes widened in terror while Colin seemed unperturbed,”So do you Pen?”
“Do I what?” She whispered as her thoughts become fuzzy once more as he lowered his face so that she could feel his breath on her lips.
“Do you love me?” He was so close…She blinked repeatedly at the closeness of his face.
“Yes,” He pulled the breathy answer from her right before closing the distance between their lips.
His lips were soft but demanding. His hands now rested on her jaws as he tilted her face up - using his experience to make her first kiss more amazing that she could have possibly imagined. She raised her hands and let it rest on his chest, fingers curling as they used his shirt to keep her standing and steady.
He tilted his face as his tongue asked for permission to taste hers. Oh this was very nice.
They both let out twin moans.
“Colin! If you don’t come down right now I shall refuse to fund any trips abroad for the foreseeable future!” Anthony’s harsh whisper floated up to their roam.
“Colin, you should go” She reluctantly pulled back, not wanting this stolen moment to end but she knew how much his travels mean to him. Tomorrow he will sober up and regret his actions. No doubt, he would want those funds to travel as far away as possible from her person.
Colin surprised her yet again,”That’s fine. I am not planning on going anywhere. At least not without my wife.”
He was smiling so wide that it hurt,”…you are getting married?!”
He nodded.
She was going to start crying. Why was he doing this?
His face transformed to concern before his eyes widened in realization,”..to you!”
“What?” Penelope was so confused.
“My wife. You. (Takes a deep breath) I’m doing this all wrong,” Colin got down on both of his knees, his face now showing a serious expression that is seldom seen on his face.
He looked up at her and held both of her hands,”Penelope, I love you too. I’ve come to a realization that my feelings for you are far more than what one would feel for just a friend. I love you as a man would love a woman, as I would love my wife. MY WIFE. Please forgive this fool in front of you for realizing so late how much he loves you. Please put me out of my misery, I cannot imagine a life without you by my side. I love you Penelope. I need you. I want you. I love you. “
He punctuated those last several words with kisses to her hands, eyes never leaving hers,” I would be lost without you. In return I promise to love you until my last breath and beyond. I will worship the ground you walk upon. Cherish every moment with you. I promise to be the best husband to you and father to our children. “
She was crying at this point.
“So what do you say, Pen?” She looked down at him, sniffling and nodding her head, “ is that a yes?”
“Colin Bridgerton, when I get my hands on you…” They were startled by the THUMP of Anthony falling inside her bedroom from the window. He stood up, one hand behind his lower back and groaning.
They watched wide-eyed as Anthony took in Colin still at his knees and Penelope standing in front of him, their hands still intertwined. His face turning a shade of red that they didn’t know was possible.
“Pssssst! Anthony! Colin! They’re home! Come back down now!” Benedict’s frantic whispers could be heard outside. Portia Featherington could be heard going up the stairs already.
Anthony grabbed Colin by the collar and was pushing his brother out the window with record time.
“I love you! I’ll be back tomorrow with a ring!” Bang Colin’s head hit his head on the open window where Anthony was trying to stuff him to go outside.
“Penelope? Are you still awake?” She heard her Mama’s footstep head towards her room.
“Good evening Miss Featherington, I do apologize for the inappropriate intrusion!” Anthony then followed Colin out just as her Mama opened the door without knocking.
“What in good heavens are you doing?” Portia looked at Penelope who was standing in the middle of her room smiling at her open window.
“Oh nothing Mama. I was just about to go to bed. How was the party?”
Thud
Groan
Thud
Yelp of Pain
Muffled cursing
“Did you hear that?” Portia started to walk over to her window.
“HEAR WHAT MAMA?” Penelope raised her voices, causing her mother to pause and look at her incredulously.
Silence
Portia shook her head and headed out of the room, muttering to herself about how many drinks she must have imbibed that night.
Penelope closed the door to her room and ran to her window.
She looked out just as Anthony, Benedict, and Colin come out from behind the big oak tree. It looked like Anthony had just smacked Colin upside the head because he was rubbing it with a sheepish look on his face while Benedict looked at them with amusement.
Colin had looked up - a smile already lighting up his face when he saw her.
“Pen! Pen! I LOVE YOU!” He started to sing before Anthony put his hand over his mouth.
“You bloody idiot, let’s go!” Head shaking, the older man dragged Colin away as Benedict shuffled after them. The artist gave her a small smile and a wave.
Then the three figures are lost in the shadows of the night.
As Penelope laid in her bed that night, she pulls her pillow to her chest and allowed herself to dream of tomorrow.
TBC ???
Thank you so much for all the likes, kudos, reblogs, and comments for my Polin Drabbles. The amount of love and support I've received for them has brought me so much joy!
The Polin Drabbles are winding down - never fear I will finish Transcendent and Formidable as they are part of the Words series. I do love writing shorts/drabbles/one shots so keep an eye out of a new series from me much like this one but with another theme.

Polin Drabble - Adulation
Adulation
Eloise turned the key and opened the door to her and Penelope’s apartment.
“Pen! Did you get my text? I’m starving. We making something or are we going ou-,” Eloise stopped on the edge of their living room. She eyed the two people on the couch suspiciously. She then smacked her lips and shrugged quickly, “What are you guys up to?”
On the couch was her best friend and her brother sitting quite far apart on the couch and staring very hard at the movie playing on the television.
Colin lazily shifted his eyes from the tv to his sister and raised an eyebrow,” I thought you were the smart one? Watching a movie. Obviously.” His tone imperious and his eyes seemed to look down on her even though he’s the one that was sitting.
Eloise just stuck out her tongue in response. Childish. Yes. You would have to be when dealing with a child!
With an eye roll, she looked over at Penelope instead. The red head seemed to still be hyper focusing on whatever regency movie was playing. Unblinking eyes staring at the screen. Pride and Prejudice? Sense and Sensibility? Doesn’t matter,”Penelope?”
Her friend turned towards her as if surprised, “Oh! Eloise! Welcome home, I didn’t see you there. This movie is just so..interesting! How was your day?”
Poor Pen’s face was turning a cherry red color and her rambling stopped abruptly as she looked at Eloise with a hopeful face.
On the corner of her eyes she noticed Colin turn his head towards Penelope in amusement, he didn’t do a very good job hiding that smirk on his face.
Eloise just hmmmm’ed. She took a moment to really look at them.
Sweaty, clothes a bit disheveled, breathing a little fast if Penelopes chest was an indication. Between Penelopes shifty eyes and Colins face - one she calls his “I’m innocent. It wasn’t me” face that worked on their mother 90% of the time - she felt it was her turn to try to hold in her own smile.
I mean seriously!
She considers herself quite a perceptive person and she couldn’t help but feel a tad bit offended that these two could even THINK of trying to hide their relationship from her. At this point it felt like they weren’t even trying!
“Work was fine, “She answered as she took a seat on the end of the “L”shaped couch that they had and basically sat next to Penelope. Her back to the tv and having a vantage point now where she could see her brothers face clearly but blocked Penelope from watching her movie, “Although, I do want to let you know that I have this new coworker…”
“Oh?” Penelope glanced at Colin whose face morphed into one of distrust.
“Oh yes, his name is Henry and he is EXACTLY your type! I mean you haven’t dated anyone in a while so I figured since I’m your best friend (shrugs) I can help with that by setting you up on a date”
Her friend looked at her in disbelief and quickly replied, “It’s ok. I’m good. Really. I’m sure your coworker is a very nice man but I’m really not looking currently.”
Colins face turned away from them and looked back at the movie. His jaw clenching and eyes narrowed.
Oh god her sides was starting to hurt as she tried to hold her laughter in and keep a straight face herself, “But Pen, he’s tall, smart as a whip, smooth deep voice, and he has muscles for days! That suit he was wearing was tailor made but there’s NO WAY to hide those arms.”
“Well why don’t YOU date him instead?” Colins irritated voice interrupted her adulations and caused her to give her attentions to him momentarily.
Penelope sucked in her lips into a thin line as she looked between the siblings nervously. Eloise turned back to her knowing that it would only agitate her brother more to be ignored, “ and I told Henry all about YOU. “
“Me?” Pen asked weakly.
“Yep! (Eloise extended the “P” sound so that her lips made a smacking sound)  Pen he sounded VERY interested especially when I showed him pictures of you! I HAD to show him that one picture when we went to the beach last summer? (Eloise turned her head towards Colin) Brother remember - when you came back from Spain (“Greece” Penelope interjected) and Pen was wearing that two piece green bathing suit? It’s the one later that night near the bonfire and she had to borrow your jacket?”
Of course he would know. He had asked for a copy of that photo of Penelope smiling, wearing his jacket, the embers of the fire highlighted her red hair and made her look ethereal. It was also the background wallpaper on his phone once you enter the code to unlock it. She’d only found out after picking it up from the floor where Augie had just set it down after an episode of whatever kid show ended on the Netflix app. Colin had given his phone to their nephew in order to keep him occupied the last time the whole family gathered at their mothers house.
Colin didn’t dignify her question with an answer and so she continued,
”Anyways, I just wanted to make sure with you that it would be ok for me to give him your number?”
“No. Absolutely not!” Colin glowered at Eloise.
“And why not?!” She glowered right back taunting him.
“Because…!!” Her brother sputtered angrily.
“Because what?!!” Eloise stood up with her hands on her hips.
“Because….” His breathing hastened as he turned to look at Penelope who was now biting her lips worriedly.
Eloise just tapped her right foot impatiently, “Well that’s not really a good ex-“
“Because I’m in love with her!” Colin’s gaze flicked from Eloise to Penelope who eyed him in wonder so he continued but this time in a tender tone, ”I’m in love with you…”
He moved closer to her on the couch and raised hands to hold her face as she teared up - her own hands softly covered them, thumbs caressing his as she seemed to search his face for something Eloise did not know.
“Oh well my work is done. I’m going to mums house. I think they still should have some leftovers from dinner since your here, “ Eloise smirked as she looked at their confused faces, “Oh! Whatever you both do next, PLEASE for the love of God and all that is holy - keep it in the bedroom!”
With that, Eloise turned around and walked out of the apartment with a big smile on her face.
Henry? She cackled. Oh yes Henry, tall broad shouldered hunk of a man. Starred in that one show on Netflix. She meant Henry Cavill of course. Eloise’s proudly started texting Hyacinth that she has some very juicy information and NO she couldn’t say anything but it’s so so good and with that she continued to walk with a spring on her step.

All other writings on hold!
Due to popular demand - there will be a sequel to Wallow.
I'm more than halfway done with Convergence and it's longer than the story before it.
Colins POV.
Here's a teaser of Convergence:
He made his way to the gardens and found himself hearing heated voices. One of them Eloise..and the other Penelope?
“-you didn’t hide it very well,” Eloise said mockingly,” The only one who probably doesn’t know is my oblivious brother, himself.”
“Eloise…I..I..I…,” Penelope. He hurried to defend her from his sister who sounded most unkind. Not like her usual self.
“…am in love with Colin Bridgerton. Yes we’ve already concluded that.”
He stopped.
LOVE? Colin Bridgerton? Me?!
Tumblr media
I'm thinking whether or not to post it with my drabbles or repost Wallow separately so I can post Convergence as the second chapter. It would open it up for more stories in this universe.
I was thinking of doing this for Lord Jarvis Cane the 9th,
As well as Adulation and Novelty so I can write more about Eloise being just an awesome roommate to Colin and Pen. Maybe add more Phillip into the mix.

Polin Drabble - Giddy
sorry took a break from Convergence - I hope you enjoy Giddy aka The one were Edmund Bridgerton fell in love
Giddy
Edmund has this clear memory of falling in love.
And it was love! He was sure of it.  He was only 9 years of age and the lady in question was quite a bit older. She would just have to wait at least 10 more years but he is to be the next Viscount so he knows that she will be well provided for.
She was already a family friend and he was sure that his aunts and uncles, not to mention his grandmother, would love to have her be a Bridgerton - officially.
Alas, he was getting off topic. Yes he was 9 years old and he had just walked away from his cousins Amelia and Belinda as they do their best to dress his younger brother Miles in questionable clothing and he found himself in the library of Aubrey Hall.
He saw his Aunt Eloise’s best friend Penelope Featherington reading a book beside the huge bay window and he felt like he was seeing her for the first time. Her red hair shone in different hues as the sun illuminated her flawless face.
“Oh hello there,” Then she smiled at him and he felt giddy. He walked over to sit next to her and give her the lopsided smile that his grandmother say is reminiscent of his uncle Colin.
“What are you reading?”
She looked even prettier up close.
“Oh nothing that you would find entertaining  but it’s an old favorite of mine - Emma by the author Jane Austen,” Penelope closed the book and turned her full attention to him,” It’s  a beautiful day outside, what are you doing indoors?”
“I find myself surrounded by immature children,” He pouted.
“But are you not a child yourself?” She clearly was trying to hide her smile.
“Not for much longer, and my mother says that I am an old soul and that I conduct myself with a maturity of men far older than I”, He raised his chin at her. He can’t have her looking at him like he was a child - he’ll be 10 next year!
“I see,”She stood up and looked outside the window,” Well then, it’s too beautiful of a day to be indoors, will you accompany me to see what your uncles are up to?”
He looked out to see Uncle Colin and Uncle Benedict laughing at his Uncle Gregory and his uneven mustache that he has been trying to grow.
He lifted his arm to take hers, “ Of course my Lady.”
Her arm felt warm against his. Oh yes this MUST be love.
So that entire summer - he spent as much time as he could in her company.
He was well and truly happy and in LOVE.
Until that horrible night.
“I dare say, we have another Bridgerton enamored with Penelope,” Benedict guffawed.
Edmund had snuck in the kitchens for a midnight snack and heard his uncles come in. Hiding himself so that he shall not get in trouble - Edmund eavesdropped on their conversation.
“I know not what you mean,” He heard his Uncle Colin’s exasperated voice.
“Come now brother, your eyes have been glued to our dear Pen whenever she is in the room, why not put all of us out of our miseries and just court the lady!”
Startled, Edmund started choking on the biscuit he had shoved in his mouth.
“Dear Lord, are you alright Edmund!”
He glared at his Uncles but took glass of water given to him,” Uncle Colin doesn’t like Penelope that way, you take that back Uncle Benedict!”
He saw both of their eyebrows lift almost hilariously in surprise before giving each other a quick look.
“Besides! I am already courting Penelope!!” He stomped his foot in frustration.
“Are you now?” Uncle Colin’s grin was infuriating.
“Yes! She will have to wait some more years to be sure - but I love her!”
“Oh dear!” Now they were both looking at him amusement.
“I’m serious! She is like sunshine! Her beauty incomparable! She is kind and sweet and I’ll be younger and more handsome than Uncle Colin in a couple more years. He’s already too old for her!”
“Too old?!” Uncle Colin’s face morphed into an indignant expression.
Uncle Benedict just burst out laughing.
Edmund crossed his arms and pouted,” Yes - give me a couple years and I will convince her to marry me!”
He saw Uncle Colin sputter as Uncle Benedict was almost choking in laughter.
“ And what is so funny?” His father’s voice startling all three of them.
“Your son has vowed to marry Penelope Featherington since Colin is too OLD for her!”
Not liking being made fun of, Edmund ran pass his father and up the stairs to his room. Penelope is so pretty and he could see himself holding her hands for the rest of his life! Reading books together, taking carriage rides like his mother and father.
He heard a knock on his door before his father walked in.
“I heard that you find yourself in love with Ms. Featherington” Father sat on the edge of his bed.
“…yes.” He lifted his chin and clenched his jaw - he knew his eyes was already glaring, daring his father to make fun of him too.
“You are far too young to be thinking of love…”
He cut off his father,” Age is but a number!”
“Edmund - she is 8 and 20 years old and I fear she has already given her heart to another.”
“Noooo who?!” He felt his eyes tear up.
“I’m afraid it’s only a matter of time before she is to be married.”
“She’s engaged?!” How…what…how - she hasn’t brought anyone and she spends most of her time with either Aunt Eloise or Uncle….Colin.
He remembered Uncle Benedicts words in the kitchen.
Another Bridgerton.
He turned around and faced away from his father - already pulling his blanket over his head.
And so the same month that Edmund Bridgerton felt love for the first time, he also had his first heartbreak. He had tried to deny it but Penelope would just light up whenever Uncle Colin was near her.  He watched as his Uncle danced with her, walked with her.
He even caught his uncle with his head on her lap as she read a book out loud to him.
He eyed them sadly, his mother’s arm pulling him close to her and giving him a hug. His father must’ve told her of his affections.
His father was right - Penelope would get married quite soon and it was to his Uncle Colin.
He sat and watched his Uncle take her hand and kiss the back of it before keeping their interlaced fingers to his chest. They looked quite happy and besotted.
He felt a tapping on his shoulders and he looked up to see delicate hands offering him chocolates. He looked further up and saw beautiful red hair, twinkling eyes, and a bright smile.
“Hello, I’m Felicity Featherington. I believe you know my sister ?”
Ohhhhhhh he was in LOVE!

Polin Drabble - Kindle
Kindle
Penelope thought that her heart couldn’t break anymore but once again life has proven her wrong.
“So will you help me Penelope?”
It took everything in her to cover the heartbreak from her face. It’s natural like breathing now since she’s had so much practice this last year.
So she did what she always did and plastered the biggest smile she could muster in the face of Colins pleading face.
“Of course I will! I’m…just so happy for you!” Penelope felt her airway constricting,” Colin, I’ve got a couple things I need to finish - why don’t you send me a text of the time and place and I’ll be there for sure!”
“Oh thank you thank you thank you Pen! You’re the best!” He quickly gave her a hug then ruffled her hair as he stepped back. Like she was still a child - a sibling like Gregory or Hyacinth,” I know with your help, I’ll be able to get the perfect engagement ring for Marina!”
With that, Colin Bridgerton, the man she’s loved for the past 5 years walked out of her apartment. Penelope quickly locked the door behind him and walked into her bedroom where she tried her best to muffle her cries. One arm hugging around her round waist and the other on her lips to muffle the pitiful sounds that were coming out.
She tried to control her breathing. Her eyes shut tightly in a futile attempt to keep her tears from falling.
Seeing him fall in love with Marina almost killed Penelope but this - marriage. He didn’t even know that before they were officially dating 2 months ago that Marina was still seeing her ex-boyfriend George. When she tried to talk to him about it, Colin just completely shut her down.
She could see it now, Colin being obliviously cruel would have her pick Marina’s ring, Marina would ask her to be her maid of honor and help with the wedding, she’s going to be aunt Pen to their children, and she will spend the rest of her life loving a man who just did not love her back. Could NEVER love her back.
She tried. Oh how she tried to get over her feelings for Colin but every man she could even consider - she just found lacking. She would get so excited at first thinking that maybe this is the one that would make her heart race but instead she would just feel numb in the face of their charms. She was just too full of Colin! It is as if her love for him carved out her insides and made itself home -thus leaving no room for anyone else.
This was her life now.
Fresh tears ran down her cheeks as she crawled into her bed. Alone. She would never feel the warmth of his arms here nor the passion of his kisses on this bed. The timbre in his voice while he spouted words of love. She would never see his eyes looking at her with desire for she is Penelope Featherington and she could never kindle that type of love and devotion from anyone - much less from someone way out of her league .
And he was - out of her league that is. She’s always have known that. Colin and Marina just looked so good together. Not only were they blessed with looks but smarts as well. They both came from good families and the world was just their oyster.
Now Penelope knew she was as average if not below average as can be. She had more curves than what society deems to be beautiful, thick unruly red hair that, in most days, was unmanageable, and she was so short. Her family was struggling financially, always in debt due to their excessive and frivolous spending, and were never in good standing with anyone who was anyone.
Penelope should’ve prepared herself better for this day.
She knew that one day her undreamable dream would end. With that last thought in her mind, she drifted off into an uneasy sleep.
——
7 years later - Present
Penelope stopped walking, turned to her left and stared across the busy street. The continuous rain making a pitter patter sound on her umbrella as she stood still and gazed upon the man standing on the opposite side of the road.
Mindless of the rain, he stood there with that smirk so familiar it made her heart clench. His green eyes alight with recognition. She almost forgot how tall he was. He seemed to have put on some muscle and a beard now adorn his face making him look even more handsome than before if possible. What is that saying - something about aging like fine wine?
Memories quickly flashed though her mind as they stood there looking at each other for what seemed like an eternity.
——
She did help him get the engagement ring 7 years ago - one that she would’ve chosen for herself but he saw her looking at it and deemed it to be the perfect one to propose to Marina with.
She was there when he announced to his family of his impeding marriage and took a small satisfaction to see that they too thought that the couple was moving too fast.
Colin, however, would not be dissuaded.
It was as she predicted - Marina asked her to be her maid of honor that same night they announced their engagement. With Marina’s expecting look, the Bridgerton’s heated gaze, and Colins proud smile - Penelope could not say no.
So she was there every step of the way helping her cousin plan their wedding.
It was torture.
Marina asked her opinion on everything since she knew Colin so well.
His favorite type of cake? Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake.
Location of the ceremony? The church that his parents married in.
Reception Venues? Outdoors under the moon and stars because it reminded him of the time spent with his father teaching him the constellations and telling him that it’s ok to dream.
And so on and so on.
All of these plans were things she’s dreamed about for years when she would fantasize about being Mrs. Colin Bridgerton.
She was hoping that by giving away her dream piece by piece that she could let him go just the same way.
Eloise tried her best to help for her brothers sake but could not find it in her heart to spend such a prolonged time with Marina.
And she really needed Eloise the day because Marina asked her opinion for her wedding dress.
Seeing her beautiful cousin walk up and down that stage with the lights on her as she critically looked at the mirror and tried on wedding dress after wedding dress.
“How do I look Penelope? Do you think Colin would like it? Imagine in less than a couple months I am going to be Mrs. Colin Bridgerton!”
Penelope just nodded and smiled.
——
Present
A gust of wind blew her yellow umbrella and because of her slackened grip it flew up and across the street. She could only watch in horror as said umbrella made a bee line straight into Colin’s face who dodged it quickly enough, however, the wet puddle on the pavement caused him to fall flat on his behind.
Mindful of cars, Penelope looked both ways before darting across and pulling that blasted umbrella from his hands in an effort to help him get up. That’s when she heard his laughter. The sound so familiar and one that never failed to bring warmth to her chest.
She looked down ready to apologize for the umbrella assault when she saw him looking at her tenderly with a big smile on his face.
“HI…” Colin started getting up slowly, his pants soaking wet from the puddle he fell upon. She reached out her hand to help him up and when his hand touched hers - she felt a warm tingle where their hands joined and it went up her arm.
Now standing up, Colin held her hand tightly as if he didn’t want to let it go.
——
The day of the wedding started with a thunderstorm.
Penelope barely had time to get ready since she was helping the wedding planner make sure that the outdoor venue has tarps to cover everyone from this wretched weather. So much for the moon and stars.
In hindsight it probably was an omen of what was to come.
It was such terrible timing. On the side entrance of the chapel where no one was suppose to be - Penelope found herself breaking down in front of Eloise. Finally confessing to someone about her unrequited love for Colin. With heaving sobs, her best friend wrapped her arms around her.
“Oh god, I need to go. Can you help me with -“ Penelope was cut off by Eloise’s knowing gaze.
“Put on make up so it doesn’t look like you’ve been crying your heart out? Yes, course Pen. I’ve spent years watching Daphne put on make up. It doesn’t look THAT hard.”
With that Eloise moved to enter first though the side door only to stop abruptly.
“Eloise?” Penelope asked weakly after she walked into her back.
Her friend quickly turned around with a slightly panicked look on her face, “On second thought Pen, why don’t you stay here just in case. I’ll go grab your bag of makeup!” Eloise quickly went inside after a reassuring smile. The door closing a bit too loudly behind her.
She just felt like some of the weight of hurt that’s been slowly crushing her was lifted off her chest. She would get through this day.
She HAD to get through this day. Colin Bridgerton was getting married to the love of his life. After the happy couple leaves she plans to just get so shit-faced drunk it wasn’t even funny.
She was starting to worry when her friend finally came back and started helping her. Eloise being strangely quiet.
Later after they found another priest because the one that was suppose to wed them got into a car accident - the wedding started.
Penelope braced herself. She was about to walk down the aisle towards Colin. Something she’s only ever dreamed about.
Except this was reality and she was not the bride.
She smiled as she started walking down the aisle - everyones gaze upon her and some already trying to look behind her in anticipation for the bride. She looked up and saw that Anthony was standing next to Colin and was softly whispering in his ear.
Colin had a dazed look on his face as he looked at her. She couldn’t help but to look at him lovingly - he was just so handsome in his tuxedo. For those brief couple of seconds she could pretend in her head that she was walking towards him wearing a white dress.
And just as quick as a blink of an eye, the thought is shoved away. Strangely Colins eyes widened and his mouth opened as if he was about to say something. His face turned towards her, his eyes searching her face, and she looked at him questioningly as she took her spot on the dais.
She saw him mouth her name but then it was time for the bride to walk down the aisle. Everyone turned towards Marina as the Bridal Chorus played. She was so beautiful in her long white dress but when Penelope’s eyes flickered to the groom he still staring at her.
Her eyebrows shot up and her eyes widened as he attempted to go to her. It was only Anthony’s hold on his coat and Marina finally making it to the alter and getting in between them that he stood still.
“Is everything alright?” She could hear Marina’s quiet whisper. She saw his head bob right before they both started saying their vows.
It was then that it happened.
“I take thee, Penelope as my - “
It felt like all the air was sucked out of the room.
“What?…What did you say?” Her cousin looked at his incredulously.
Anthony cleared his throat, stepped closer to Colin, and whispered, “With this ring, I take thee MARINA” He made sure to punctuate the brides name to emphasize his mistake before taking a step back.
There was an uneasy murmur filling up the chapel as Colin opened and shut his mouth several times. He looked like he would start hyperventilating soon - his words stuck to his throat.
“I object! I object!!” Everyones head turned towards the back as George Crane starting walking up the aisle,” I love you Marina! You’ve always have been the girl for me and you know in your heart that we would make a wonderful family!”
“Family?” “What is he talking about?” “Who is he?”
It was then that another bomb dropped when George opened his mouth once more,” this baby deserves to be with its father!”
“What?!” The cacophony of noise drowned the outraged roar from the Bridgertons. Anthony stood right beside a frozen Colin who was watching the scene in shock as Marina grabbed Georges hand which beckoned her and they ran out of the chapel.
—— Present
With one hand holding her yellow umbrella and the other still held tightly by Colin, Penelope smiled shyly at him, “Hello to you too stranger. How long have you been back?”
Colin shifted his grasp on her hand and interlocked their fingers,”Oh I came in late last night. I decided to just crash at Benedicts so that I can surprise you.”
“Did you now…” Penelope’s smile broke character as she could no longer keep up the facade of nonchalance.
“It’s been a long 6 months, I would’ve thought my girlfriend would’ve been happier at my surprise.”
He then bent down as she adjust her grip on her yellow umbrella to make room for his kiss. Closing his eyes, his hands lifted to her jaw, thumbs caressing her cheeks as Colin gave her a soft lingering kiss. Both enjoying few moments immersing themselves at the feel and taste of one another. Passionate yet chaste enough for public settings.
With a soft smile against each others lips they parted slightly.
He wrapped his arms around her a bit awkwardly due to the umbrella, his cheek resting on the top of her head,”I missed you so much Pen, let’s never be apart from now on.”
Feeling encumbered, Penelope let go of her yellow umbrella and wrapped her arms around her boyfriend. The rain now composed of tiny sprinkles.
Colin Bridgerton. The star of his own travel show, best selling author, and devoted boyfriend of Penelope Featherington.
---
It was a long road to where they are at now. It was all because he had overheard her confession that day of the wedding. Apparently Eloise had to get Anthony to help calm a hyperventilating Colin. It was then that she had presented him an ultimatum. Penelope or Marina. Between the two, who can he not live without.
Later, Anthony had asked a question as Penelope walked down the aisle. “Right at this moment, brother, what do you see when you look at her?”
Colin would later confess,”Someone I could never turn away from. Someone I’d always look for. Someone who I would want to be by my side - always.”
But everything was happening so fast and the next thing he knew he was suppose to be making his vows and he just couldn’t do it.
Marina. Penelope. Marina. Penelope.
Penelope would always win. At the moment of his realization George Crane’s voice would echo through the walls of the church.
The first couple of years after his botched wedding to her cousin - who was apparently pregnant with her ex-boyfriends child - Penelope and Colin took it very slow. Their friendship was very important to them and they both had a lot of healing to do.
Penelope with her bouts of insecurities and feelings of lack of self worth. Not trusting him easily, not trusting his feelings for her easily.
Colin with the realization of his feelings for his best friend. Trust issues due to Marina’s cheating and subsequently leaving him on the alter - although it looked like he was well on his way to doing the same to her. His feelings of guilt for all the hurt he had unknowingly caused Penelope.
So amidst all of their new firsts as a couple and all the excitement that entails - they had put in the work.
Slowly brick by brick they rebuild their relationship stronger than before - together.
---
One thing that they both have been putting off was the talk of marriage. Colin wanted to marry her.
Penelope, however, was happy the way things currently stand.
She may have downplayed how it still stings when she thinks of weddings. He didn’t know that she refused to even think of walking down the aisle because it reminded her of the wedding of her dreams and how it wasn’t hers anymore.
In her quest to try to rid of her feelings for him, she had planned his and Marina’s wedding down to the most minute detail to what she would’ve wanted. At the time it was the closest she could ever be when it came to weddings and Colin Bridgerton.
Now she regretfully can’t imagine the chapel, outdoor venue under the moon and stars…even his chocolate strawberry shortcake she knew he would’ve devoured hungrily - leaving some doubt of whether any of the guests would be able to get a taste of it.
“Marry me Pen?” This wan’t the first time he asked. He pulled back and looked at her tenderly, “ I want you to be my wife.”
“Colin,” she sighed.
“Why won’t you marry me?” Those green eyes filled with sadness and insecurity.
“Walk with me,” She pulled away far enough so that she could hold one of his hands - making sure to interlock their fingers - and grabbing her forgotten umbrella with the other. There was silence between them at first as they started trending slowly down the deserted street. Both now thankful that the rain stopped and the sun peaked out behind grey clouds.
“You know that I planned Marina’s wedding?” She looked at him questioningly and continued when he nodded,” That wedding was everything I ever dreamed of. The ring, the dress, the chapel, everything. I died a little inside every time I gave away a piece of our wedding.”
Colin stopped and hung his head - shutting his eyes in regret and sorrow. He turned and faced Penelope, his right hand tucking a loose curl swaying near her face behind her ear, and looked deep in her eyes to show his sincerity.
“You deserve the wedding of your dreams and I do want to remind you that I’m not who I was 7 years ago. My favorite cake is that Parisian Chocolate Cake we had on our 3rd anniversary. I DO want to still get married in the chapel my parents got married in BUT I want Benedict as my best man now because I know Anthony would love to walk you down the aisle. Venue? (He shrugged) perhaps my family home in the countryside - Aubry Hall. We can do an indoor outdoor reception area. Lots of music and dancing! I want to dance the rest of the night with you.”
His last sentence was delivered so softly and tenderly such as his small but loving grin.
“You’ve really thought about this?” She looked at him with the slow realization that all he described was something she too would very much like.
“Let’s plan this together? You and I,” Colin pulled Penelope in front of him, pulling the umbrella so it dropped on the ground, he held both of her hands, swinging them slightly before bring them towards his lips so that he may kiss her knuckles,”What do you say Pen? Will you make an honest man out of me?” He tilted his head slightly to the left and gave her his trademark mischievous smirk as he wagged his eyebrows up and down eliciting a giggle of amusement and an eye roll from her.
Penelope exhaled then smiled widely before her face turned serious yet loving.,“I do love you, you impossible man,”
“Was that a yes?” His smirk turned into a smug smile as he felt her answer would be different this time.
Penelope licked her lips then let go of his right hand so that she could lift a finger to her cheek -as if she was thinking deeply., “ I don’t know, this is a very unusual proposal..”
She shrugged playfully, enjoying the moment a little longer. Much to her surprise he promptly got down on one knee and pulled out a small box.
“What? How? Huh?,” Her brain literally could not form a single coherent sentence at this development.
“I’ve been carrying this ring on my pocket for the past year or so and I would really, really love to finally give this to you, “He popped the box open revealing a delicate rose gold diamond ring,” Penelope Featherington, my favorite person in the whole world, would you do me the honor of being my wife?”
She took a moment to feel that sense of disbelief that this was really happening.
Her younger self had conjured so many scenarios of how Colin Bridgerton would propose to her and yet on this quiet wet day on Governors Square, with the clouds parted, the sun now out and about in it’s full, bright, glory, and the sky adorning itself with not one but two rainbows - Penelope decided that none of those scenarios compared to the reality of this moment.
“Yes”

Polin Drabble - Ubiquitous
Ubiquitous aka The one with Lord Jarvis Cane the 9th
Colin looked up at the large sails of the ship that was currently taking him back home, willing the winds to expedite his journey.
He has been feeling not himself lately. If he was truly honest, he has not been feeling like himself for the past 2 weeks.
He had plans to visit France AND Spain during this tour. He had not expected to return so soon being it was still fairly early on and he had only visited a handful of places in France. He was quite excited to visit and do all the things that was on his itinerary. He had, after all, spent months crafting the perfect trip abroad with Penelope. She had help research the many places he should visit not to mention the local cuisine that he just HAD to try.
His thoughts shifted to his dear friend. Despite what anyone would say, he did think of his friend from time to time when the most innocuous thing would remind him of her. The sunsets he saw in Bavaria. The blue waters of Greece. The yellow tulips that stretched as far as the eyes could see when he was passing through the Netherlands.
Not to mention their letters!
It felt like a little piece of home when he would read those letters that contained Penelope’s thoughts during his absence. She would update him of the coming and goings of his family and make him laugh with her witty remarks. She would ask him questions of his travels and he was glad to speak with someone of things he’s seen or discovered so soon so that everything was still fresh on his mind.
Yes, everything was fine until he received letters from Eloise, Hyacinth, Benedict, and even Daphne - who he knew was busy with her new babe. They all were wonderful letters, to be sure, but they all had one thing in common.
They all talked about Penelope getting along with a Lord Jarvis Cane the 9th. Who PERPETUALLY names their son Jarvis? It was ludicrous.
And yet Penelope was quite taken with him. According to his siblings, she would promenade with him daily, spend an enormous amount of time with him in her home, and even goes out of her way to make him food!
She has NEVER made him something to eat. The thought of his Pen creating something delicious for another gentleman made him feel discomforted. Almost angry? Outraged?
Colin rubbed his chest when he felt an ache that he could not explain at the thought of Penelope with this Lord Cane. His siblings were happy to state how amicable this fellow was and quite beautiful with his piercing blue eyes and amazing brown hair. Hyacinth was quick to mention that he was fairly hairy.
He stroked the scruff of beard that had found himself growing. Penelope had not mentioned that she was partial to beards, he would’ve grown it longer just to see how she would react.
So yes, his siblings loved to show their adulations for Lord Jarvis Cane THE 9th. Colin rolled his eyes, what a pretentious name.
It was right after their letters that Colin found himself always seeing Penelope everywhere. His thoughts of her were becoming increasingly ubiquitous to the point that he could not sleep at night and when he did - she was his first thought in the morning.
Then he received a letter from Eloise stating that she had caught Penelope and Lord Cane DANCING. ALONE. In the Featherington’s drawing room!
This would not do. If anyone were to have seen them - well, his Pen would be made to marry that RAKE.
This scoundrel had no thoughts of her reputation.
No, Colin had to return and make sure that this unscrupulous Lord did not stain the purity of his dear friend. If he had laid ONE inappropriate hand at his Penelope….!
Colin found himself red with anger.
And so he found himself on a ship back home and on his way to save his Penelope from this dishonorable and untrustworthy gentleman and he uses that word most loosely.
——
He had returned home quite late into the night and so he could only take a bath and go straight to bed but he promised himself that he would visit Penelope first thing in the morning.
Propriety be damned.
He found himself caught in his mothers grip as soon as he said his greetings and he would not be able to leave until he at least had breakfast with the family. In fact, it became quite an affair with his brothers being present.
But Eloise just had to mention that Lord Jarvis Cane the Bloody 9th was most likely already WITH Penelope.
This early in the morning. No.
As quickly as he sat ravenous, he stood up feeling himself not hungry at all and just focused on seeing Penelope immediately.
In his sole focus at saying his quick goodbyes and leaving, he did not hear his mother ask “Lord Jarvis Cane the 9th?” And his siblings laughter reaching a crescendo.
——
He would later apologize to the Featherington’s butler as he felt the situation dire enough to simply move the man out of the way and start calling out for Penelope.
Then the man said that she was in the drawing room with Lord Jarvis.
He did not remember bounding into their drawing room but suddenly he was there and yelling at the top of his lungs for that rake to keep his hands off of his Penelope.
It was then that he took a moment to look about the room and only found a very startled Penelope on the floor with … a puppy? One who was now hopping towards Colin and happily wagging its tail.
He didn’t know what was going on but he felt such relief at seeing his Penelope alone - so much so that he was running on instinct at this point and so he helped her up from the floor, grabbed her face, and said I love you before giving her, hopefully, the best kiss of her life.
It had better be her only kiss or he would set about to finding this Lord and…oh Penelope felt very nice.
Her hands were now on his elbows as her soft pillowy lips brushed against his own, his tongue seeking entrance for which she opened herself with a soft whining moan that made him feel happy and proud to have elicited from her.
He pulled back when his lungs begged him to but only just so his head was still bent down with his forehead against hers. A big smile on his face as he looked at her slowly open her eyes, her breathing rapid, and a soft gasp she had let out as her beautiful blue eyes bore onto his green ones.
“Colin?” She looked at him in wonder. He hopes that she would always look at him so.
Yes. He realized.
He, Colin Bridgerton, was hopelessly, undeniably, in love with his best friend - Penelope Featherington and he told her so.
“I love you Penelope,” He caressed her lovely soft plump cheeks,” Please forsake any other and be mine as I am yours. I love you. I love love love. YOU. I love you with everything I am, everything I've been, and everything I hope to be.”
He gave her lips several quick and soft kisses and continued, “I love you with my past, and I love you for my future. I love you for the children we'll have and for the years we'll have together. I love you for every one of my smiles and even more, for every one of your smiles.”
“Yes, oh Colin I - I love you too,” His Penelope’s watery smile was full of love and tenderness and suddenly Colin felt as if the world was singing in song. Everything felt brighter around him as he bent down to give her another kiss.
“So Is it safe to assume that you will no longer be seeing Lord Cane?” He smiled at her happily, his arms now caressing her shoulders.
“Lord Cane?” She smiled back but with confusion.
“Yes, Lord Jarvis Cane the 9th,” he frowned - why were they still talking of this man again? Oh yes, he needed to make sure that scoundrel understands that Penelope was spoken for and she would be by Colin’s side for the rest of their lives because by God he was going to marry her as soon as he can convince her so.
Penelope looked at him still in confusion when the forgotten puppy yipped at them. She turned and looked down then quickly returned her now wide gaze at Colin,” Did you say..Lord Jarvis Cane? The 9th?”
Colin frowned at having to repeat himself,” Yes. Lord Jarvis Cane the 9th. “
She looked at him incredulously with her lips pursed in amusement, “Colin…”
“What?” He asked impatiently.
“Oh my darling, meet my new dog, Lord Jarvis. You know, The Canine?” She burst out in laughter.
What?
……..Ohhhhhh!
He should be quite upset at his siblings for their ruse but he really couldn’t find it in himself as he stood here with his Penelope watching her laugh.
He could decide between setting forth his revenge or buying each of his siblings gifts later.
Hmmm much later. He needs to steal a few more kisses from his Penelope before her sister or God forbid her mother comes.
And so he did kiss her.
His mouth swallowing the last of her laughter and that had made him so happy that he smiled as he gave her more kisses of love and adoration.
The End

Polin Drabble - Shrewd
Shrewd - aka the one where a bonnet landed on the wrong brother
He was her undreamable dream. A lasting infatuation that wouldn’t go away even as she tried.
He has never looked at her and will never look at her as a woman. To Anthony Bridgerton, Penelope Featherington was his younger sister’s friend. If that was not bad enough - their age difference of 12 years was like a vast ocean that she could not cross.
She had just turned 16 years old and was out for a walk at Hyde Park with her mother and sisters when a gust of wind had made her bonnet take flight!
Her flying bonnet, much to her horror, had landed on a gentleman whilst he was racing another on a horse. The poor man fell off his horse and onto a mud puddle.
Utterly mortified and concerned for the man, Penelope was near tears as she ran up to him.
Hearing a slight curse as the man groaned and stood up, his clothes ruined by mud, the man took off the bonnet that was still on his face and turned to glare at her.
It was then that his face soften as she apologized profusely and tried to explain her flying hat when she heard her mother.
“What have you done, Penelope Featherington!” Her Mama came screeching and she knew that she would be hearing about this for the foreseeable future.
Viscountess Bridgerton and her daughter Daphne had walked up to them, “Oh Anthony, are you alright?”
“Viscount Bridgerton, I do apologize for my dau-“
Oh no she won’t have a future - her mother will just murder her when they get home.
It was then that she heard the Viscount cut her Mama’s apology,” It is no trouble. She is not some would be bonnet assassin. A simple unintended accident, no harm done.”
Penelope looked up and saw the most handsome smile on his face. It took her breath away. He was so kind.
A loud laughter followed the Viscounts assurance,”Not a word Brother!”
“Colin!” The Viscountess scolded her son but with a smile on her face.
Colin Bridgerton just laughed and laughed. She didn’t know it yet but he would be one of her best friends.
In fact it was Colin that knew of her infatuation with his brother. He told her that he had deduced it by watching her interactions with Anthony.
It would also be Colin who would be secretly holding her had under the table as Anthony announced his engagement to Kate Sharma.
Penelope was happy for Anthony to have wooed such a beautiful, shrewd, and kind woman of the Ton. She was the key to his lock and she’s never seen him so happy.
It was later that they would slip away so that Penelope could cry on his shoulders.
Her dear friend Colin was ever so loyal and such an integral part of her life. She missed him terribly when he would go to his travels. It was only his constant letters that made them bearable.
Yes, Colin was so very important to her and she knew that she trusted him implicitly. That is why on an unremarkable Friday afternoon, she had asked him for a favor.
She had never been kissed before and at this point it’s looking more like she never would be.
She had almost taken back her words when she saw the shock on his reddening face.
But this could be her only chance at having experience such a wonderful thing - a simple kiss.
“Please,” She looked at his green eyes as an emotion she could not name settled in them.
Then with a steady stride, Colin had put both of his hands on her jaw, thumbs caressing her plump cheeks, before tilting his head down and brushing his lips on hers.
It was glorious.
She had never felt this way in her life. Her heart beat rapidly on her chest and a warmth seemed to spread throughout her body.
She had gasped before he brought his lips down once more. She heard a noise and she was surprised to find out it was coming from her.
In response, Colin tilted his head the other way and deepened their kiss as his right hand moved to the back of her head - getting lost in her hair, and the other went down her neck, down her shoulders, and to her back where it rested even as it pulled her closer.
She felt his tongue asking for entrance and found herself letting him in - letting him have a taste of her.
She heard and felt a rumble on his chest as he moaned - her moans joining him right after. Her hands that were uselessly on her sides now found themselves wrapping around his lower back to pull HIM even closer so that there would be no space in between.
She never thought it could be like this. It was hot and wet and oh so delicious. It was when their need to breath pulled them apart.
Gasping, Penelope looked up at Colin and felt her whole world tilt on its axis. Time seemed to slow down as her blue eyes met his green ones - searching his face as to why she’s never truly seen him before.
He licked his lips before moving his hand from the back of her head and put them on her chin, his thumb now caressing her swollen lips, “I’m going to kiss you again, Penelope and if you don’t stop me now - I never will.”
His eyes flicked from her lips and back to her eyes, asking for permission.
“God yes,” She breathed out.
Then he was leaning down and pulling her for another kiss. She didn’t know what this meant but it was as if everything was as it should be. She was only starting to realize that she may be in love with Colin Bridgerton and mayhap loved him for a long time.
She had let herself be blinded by infatuation for his brother and pushed away any thoughts of Colin beyond friendship. He was her friend, confidant, partner in crime and she had known him inside and out. His flaws as well as the multitude of wonderful traits she had appreciated but never associated as Colin - a man instead of just a friend.  How could she have looked elsewhere when he was right here all along.
He pulled back and gave her 3 quick kisses to her lips, a big smile on his face - looking at her in wonder, like she was beautiful and precious to him,” Allow me to court you. Let me convince you that I am the one for you.”
She shook her head and before he could pull away, eyes already showing hurt, she corrected him, “ You don’t need to convince me Colin. I don’t know when it happened or how but I believe I may already have loved you. I just didn’t see it. Oh I have been so blind. Please forgive me!”
She looked at him in desperation. Now that she knew that she loved him, she couldn’t bear it if he decided to change his mind. Her worries were for naught as he picked her up and swung her around as he laughed and laughed.
“Oh I LOVE YOU PENELOPE FEATHERINGTON!”

Transcendent - Chapter 1
Transcendent
The world was composed of shades of grey. It was the natural order of things.
Unless you are blessed with finding your soulmate that is.
Most people say it’s a blessing while others argue that it’s a curse.
You see the world was composed of shades of grey until you first laid eyes on your soulmate and then the most wondrous transcendent thing would happen.
You would see what is called - Colors.
Reds, Blues, Greens, Purples, and Pinks. Yellows sound nice.
Some lighter in shade and others darker.
However, there were many people who would call it a curse because once your beloved dies, all the colors in the world would disappear once more. The one left behind has nothing except the memories of their soulmate and colors.
There are others too who never meet their soulmates. Their world would never experience the joy of color.
Penelope thought she may be one of the unlucky ones. She remembers when her mother would say that she had dressed her in yellow since its a very nice color. Penelope happily thought that her parents were soulmates until she caught her mother asking their maid what color of dress was she holding in her hand. As she got older she can see that her parents were very much NOT in love, they barely tolerated each others presence.
So Penelope could do nothing but hope that she would find her soulmate because she did not want a loveless marriage like her mother and father.
She just knew that it would be magical once she laid eyes on her true love, her soulmate.
If she only knew.
——
One morning, Penelope was reading by the window that overlooked their back yard when she heard two maids conversing.
She heard about the Bridgertons for the first time as the two women outside gossiped.
Apparently they all had chestnut colored hair and dark colored warm eyes - except for one of the sons who had beautiful Green ones.
Annette, her mothers maid, was quite adamant that this charming Green eyed gentleman was named Colin and if wasn’t already with her soulmate she would have said he was the most handsome man she had ever laid her eyes on.
It was inconsequential gossip since she will forming her own opinions soon. Her family was invited to attend the first ball hosted by the Bridgerton’s since they have moved to London.
Penelope couldn’t help but smile to herself, it was finally nice to attend these parties with a friend. Cousin rather. Her distant cousin Marina had recently moved in with them and she found it very nice to have a conversation that was not full of backhanded complements.
She felt that it would be just the thing to cheer up her cousin who seemed a little forlorn after moving from the countryside. Yes a night of fun and revelry would be just the thing.
The ball that night would change everything for Penelope.
——
The ball was hosted by the new Viscountess Kate and her husband Viscount Anthony Bridgerton. The dancing hall was lively and the food decadent. She was enjoying herself as she and Marina walked arm in arm laughing happily and conversing about the gentleman who had taken a turn dancing with Marina and the abnormally large mole on his nose that seemed to be move on its own when it happened.
They weren’t watching where they were going and had bumped directly into a gentleman. All three fell ungracefully into the ground beside the refreshment table.
Groaning, Penelope looked up and her world shifted.
Colors! These were what people called Colors! Oh how she would just love to capture this feeling and put it in her reticule to enjoy fully at a later time!
Elated, Penelope turned her eyes towards the gentleman they had bumped into.
The man, who had fallen on his behind, was very handsome to be sure but it was his eyes. She didn’t know what it was yet but it was not grey! She felt her breath speed up in wonder.
Her soulmate!
She has met her soulmate!
The warm happy feeling from her chest spread through her entire body as she looked at him. A big smile breaking out in her giddiness. He was in the process of standing up and she thought that he must be incredible tall.
As he stood, he offered his hand.
It was then she grew confused. He was looking at Marina with such a wondrous look on his face.
She stood up slowly by herself not understanding what was going on but she took in her surroundings as more Colors seem to bleed into everything around her.
“I found you! I can scarcely believe it, you are SO beautiful!,” The man - her soulmate - was clutching Marina’s hand with both of his. He brought her knuckles close to his lips and gave it a loving kiss, his eyes never leaving Marina’s face.
Then her cousin did something that filled Penelope’s heart with dread.
She smiled at him and replied, “And I have found YOU!”
…..What?
She could feel herself starting to feel faint as she looked from one to the other.
It was then that the couple were surrounded by what she assumed was his family and hers.
Congratulations rung out as she was pushed back by her sisters who glared at her for standing like an idiot for she was in their way.
…..What?
She felt tears well up in her eyes. She faintly hears the Viscount stop the music to announce the happy occasion of his brother Colin finding his soulmate - Marina Thompson.
….Colin? His name made her heart ache.
Colin, the one with the green eyes?
Penelope felt herself shuffled back even more as well wishers crowded in.
It is when she found her back against the wall that she could take in the sight of Colin happily leading Marina to the dance floor.  His smile so wide and beautiful that it hurt.
He was so happy.
She had to turn away before anyone noticed her tears. Escaping through the nearest exit, Penelope found herself in the Bridgerton’s back yard.
The light sprinkling of rain caused her to shuffle hurriedly towards the veranda ahead. It is there that she let herself fall apart.
“I …(gasp) I don’t..(gasp)  understand,” Penelope bit her lip and raised her hand to her heart.
She hears more cheering from the Bridgerton home.
You can only have one soulmate in the whole wide world.
She knew not how long she stayed there alone before she made the decision to leave.
Braving the rain which has starting to pour down even harder, Penelope made the lonely walk back home.
Dripping wet, she made her way to her room mindless of the puddles of water she was leaving in her wake.
She went inside and closed the door and took off the…yellow? dress she was wearing and climbed into bed defeated.
It is there she wallowed in her tears and cried into the night.
To be continued...
A/N - Penelope maybe more introverted due to not having Eloise as a friend sooner and no Lady Whistledown.

Polin Drabble - Novelty (short sequel to Adulation)
The rest of the drabbles are located at AO3.
Novelty
Eloise
Eloise was hoping that the novelty of their relationship being out in the open would wear off between her best friend and brother. Instead they seemed to do many things she would rather NOT see out in the open.
“Good God! My eyes!” She quickly turned around and used  her hands to cover her eyes,” YOU are going to be paying for my therapy lessons, you know that right?”
She could hear Penelopes squick of surprise and Colins frustrated groan.
“Sorry, sorry…uhm can you give us 1 minute?” This was met by Colin’s outraged and offended voice.
“ 1 minute?!” Eloise heard her friend giggling.
“That’s it!” Eloise grabbed the spray bottle near Penelope’s plants located near their entrance hall and walked back into the living room of their apartment.
Her brother was still on top of said best friend but at least a blanket was now covering the lower portion of his body and Penelope was now starting to sit up from beneath him.
Eloise narrowed her eyes, aimed, and fired.
She enjoyed Colin’s yelp of surprise as the cold water hit his back, then near his ear, then his neck before he could even maneuver himself away from Penelope and closer to the other side of the couch where he picked up the big, yellow throw pillow and used it as a shield.
That’s when Eloise turned her head to see Penelope’s look of amusement. As if she’s an innocent party here! She turned and fired at her friend.
“El !!!” This time it was her friends outrage cry that rang out as she was pelted with the water from the spray bottle. Eloise manage to see her stand up and run away back to her room right before she felt the throw pillow that Colin had chucked at her hit her head.
It distracted her long enough for her brother to make his own retreat back to his girlfriends bedroom.
But not before he tripped on the blanket he was using to cover his lower half and falling in the hallway, losing any shred of dignity as he fell in a tangled mess. Colin let out a pained groan after the loud “Thump” that marked the end of his descent.
Such a sight would surely have caused Eloise to laugh at her sibling’s predicament - if the blanket was still doing its fine job and covering his bits.
“Colin!,” Penelope came back out to help him up,” Oh are you ok?”
“Oh I’m sure he’s fine Penelope!,” Eloise smirked a tad spitefully and matched the glare her brother was throwing her way as he finally stood up and was thankfully covered once more, “ After all he fell harder than that when he fell in love with you, right Colin?”
“Ha. Ha. ,“ Colin replied with a deadpanned expression on his face as he flipped her the bird and followed Pen back to her room. She could hear her friends giggles get muffled as he shut the door behind him.
Eloise shook her head.
Her “Henry Plan” worked out too well it seemed. She heard more muffled giggles from the bedroom.
She started fixing herself some dinner before she saw a covered tupperware with her name on it sitting on their breakfast table. She opened it up to see what looked like leftover Lasagna.
More muffled giggles before it turned into soft moans.
Oh god.
And joined by deeper groans.
Oh GOD NO!
“Keep it down you two!” Eloise yelled as she pulled out her cellphone and started browsing for “Noise Cancelling headphones”.
Maybe she should’ve said yes when Philip offered for her to stay the night. Eloise sighed before pulled a disgusted grimace on her face. She started hearing a slow squeaking sound from Penelope’s room.
NOPE.
She grabbed the lasagna and ran out the front door.
1 months later
Penelope
“Maybe you should move in with me,” Penelope pulled back from where she was snuggling and enjoying the warmth of Colin’s body to look at his face.
He was looking at her tenderly, still stroking her hair with the hand that wasn’t cradling her back.
“Hmmm?” Her mind still a bit fuzzy after their horizontal tango.
He pulled a face as he heard a bed squeaking from the other bedroom,”The walls here are way too thin.”
“You may be right,”She couldn’t help but pull a face as well as they heard Eloise’s exultations due in part to Phillips…efforts.
“So what do you say, love ?” Penelope looked back up at his green eyes full of happiness.
They heard muffled twin shouts of completion in the other room.
“Oh yes, most definitely!” She quickly buried her face back to his chest, hoping that the sound of his breathing would distract her from what she just heard.
She heard quick squeaking again, “Again?!”
Colin pulled away and sat up, covering his ears and started humming loudly.
She too sat up and poked his shoulders to gain his attention to ask the question she already knew the answer to,” Are you hungry?”
Colin looked at her gratefully,” I could eat.”
It wasn’t long before the two found themselves dressed and out the front door.
——
Eloise
She was quite sweaty but it was so worth it.
“Are you satisfied now?” Her darling Phillip was quite sweaty as well and breathing loudly at their efforts.
“Oh yes, VERY,” She smiled widely, she too was breathing hard, as she tightened her hold on his hands.
“Tell me again why we’re doing this?” Phillip sat down on the bed in exhaustion, looking around to see the mess they made of it.
She herself sat down inelegantly beside him,” Because those two need a taste of their own medicine!”
Phillip looked at her with an exasperated amusement look to his face. A small smile gracing his handsome face at her pouting.
“So you decided that we should jump on your bed and make lovemaking sounds at (he looked at his watch) 11:30pm?” He quirked an eyebrow at her.
“At least they must think highly of your stamina!” She lifted her own eyebrows up and down at him in amusement.
Phillip just shook his head at her as he tried to hid his smile behind the back of his hand.
He was so terribly handsome her significant other. Well, at least they know that they’re alone now she thought as she pushed him back down on the bed and climbed on top of him.

Polin Drabble - Binary
Binary aka The zombie apocalypse Polin no-one asked for
Penelope looked up at the stars and as she did so a lone memory arose. It was one that felt like it happened a decade ago when it all was but only 2 years since Colin and Penelope looked up at the stars together. It was a rare and possibly a scandalous occasion should someone have seen them together that night - alone at Aubrey Hall. There was a balcony through the library and that was where they sat next to each other.
But this was Colin and she was just Penelope. Even if they did get caught, no one would believe that it was for anything other than a platonic meeting between friends.
Colin had talked about how he learned about Binary stars due to a discovery some years ago by a Sir William Herschel and Penelope remembered listening to him veer off into how ship captains use devices like a sextants and a chronometers to travel, however, the really great sailors knew how to look up at the stars on a clear night to help guide their ships in the right direction.
It was all so fascinating, especially, when Colin explained how he was learning some of these things from various people during his travels. It was right before he left for his last adventure.
She remembered that night clearly for they made wishes upon the stars - for his safe travels and for her to find a husband who would be“worthy of her”.
She didn’t want that night to end. They had spent hours talking in the library balcony about anything and everything and Penelope was sure that she had never laughed so hard or felt so close to anyone as she did that night with him.
But alas, all good things must come to an end. With the brightening sky and a yawn from both of them, it was mutually decided that it was way past time that they part and retired to their bedrooms.
But that night didn’t end with a goodbye. It ended with a kiss. Her first kiss.
It was an accident really. He had bent down and she thought that he was going to say good night and so she turned her head towards him. He was leaning down to kiss her cheek.
For whatever reason, he was bending down to kiss her on her cheek and when she turned her head - their lips met briefly.
She remembered her lips tingled in such a profound and magnificent way right before she covered them with her hand. Eyes wide and face heating up, Penelope had looked up in shock as Colin had taken two steps back, his eyebrows high, lips parted, and his green eyes looked directed at hers.
Then he turned around and left.
It was not long after that night that he went off for his travels - this time to Cyprus.
If they knew what would happen next - She would’ve wished harder for his safe return and she knew he would’ve wished for her and his family’s safety.
It had happened so quickly!
It was the day that wouldn’t end.
When one thinks of the horror that had occurred, it would seem like the event would’ve been at night when the city was dark and danger loomed in every corner.
No.
It was just as breakfast was ending when screams outside startled her family.
Varley and Mama quickly went outside to see who had let out that blood curling scream.
It was a mistake.
They would be called the Undead.
What was once illustrious people of the Ton transformed into mindless foul creatures. Her mother and Varley were attacked at once. Prudence was next. Penelope could do nothing but barricade herself in her drawing room in shock at what had just transpired. She quickly ran towards the window overlooking the street as more screams rang out.
There was blood everywhere. People were attacking other people on the streets. Biting them and dear god consuming parts of them before moving on to the next victim. She saw from across the street Eloise being pushed away from the window and Benedict calling out to someone behind them. He then looked across and saw her then looked down toward the front of her house in horror before rushing off.
She was so afraid.
She could hear groaning outside the barred door.
She didn’t want to die.
She didn’t want to die.
She didn’t want to die…
She didn’t.
The next week was a blur. Being rescued by Anthony and Benedict Bridgerton along with John and Michael Stirling and brought to their home. She clearly remembered Anthony yelling at her not to look but she did. Her mother. Her sister.
Undead.
Falling into Eloise’s arms, they both cried. Life as they knew it was gone. Friends, families, neighbors turning into the Undead.
The next day - the harrowing escape from the Bridgerton home to Aubrey Hall.
The loud carriages carrying the women and supplies as Anthony, Benedict, and young Gregory rode horses beside some of their staff trying to keep the carriages safe. They had traveled almost nonstop. Barely eating and sleeping. The farther away they were from Mayfair the less Undead they saw.
They had come upon a Sir Phillip Crane and his two young children. Their mother dead from an attack from an Undead. They were promptly ushered into one of the carriages and brought to Aubrey Hall as well.
The men and the staff promptly went about fortifying their new home.
Sir Crane and Eloise went about planting seeds in the back yard as Benedict and other men built a wall to keep the undead out.
They would need food and water.
It would be a week before the Bassetts came.
Violet wailed as she held her heavily pregnant daughter and her grandchild.
Anthony hugged his brother in law fiercely for keeping Daphne and their child safe.
That’s when it hit her.
Anthony, Kate, Edwina, and her mother.
Violet, Gregory, Hyacinth, and Eloise.
Benedict and his new wife Sophie.
Francesca and her husband John and his cousin Michael.
Simon, Daphne, and Augie.
Phillip and his children.
….Colin!
Colin was out there and so far away from home.
—————
It’s been two years since that horrible day.
Every morning Penelope would look out her window and hope and prayed that this would be the day that Colin came home.
He never did.
Aubrey Hall is now a little community and everyone had a job.
Anthony became their de facto leader and sharing the burden with his wife Kate.
Violet, Benedict, and Sophie ran the home making sure everyone had clean clothes and the house livable and functioning at all times.
She was a cook now and took care of the younger children with Daphne when she could.
Gregory and Hyacinth helped with the younger children and anyone that needed help.
Most of the men were guards or foragers. Eloise was a crackshot and insisted in doing some guard duties when she wasn’t helping her husband Phillip with the Gardens and Greenhouses where they get most of their food.
Nearby neighbors now residing in Aubrey Hall took care of livestock.
Yes they’ve been very busy.
It didn’t come with losses though.
The biggest being Francesca’s husband John. He was bitten during a foraging expedition with Anthony and Michael. It wasn’t long before he turned and become one of the Undead.
Unfortunately, It wasn’t just the creatures they had to look out for.
The Fifes and Cowpers had attacked their foraging groups more than once and had tried to take Aubrey Hall. It was unnecessary and they could’ve easily just joined forces and helped one another.
The days bled into the next. This was their new normal.
Until one day, there was a scruffy man and older woman who asked for entry.
“Why, you look like you’ve seen a ghost!” The familiar voice rang out as Simon and Daphne ran to Lady Danbury,” Pish posh, I know I’m not the one you all have been waiting for!”
She turned to the man behind her.
A tanned scruffy man with the most familiar green eyes….
“Colin!” She yelled in happiness.
His mother hugged him first before it became a sobbing mess of a reunion as the prodigal son is welcomed home.
He was dressed in clothing that had seen better days and carried with him 2 large satchels on both of their horses.
“Oh dear Penelope! I am so glad to see you,” Lady Danbury came upon her as she watched Anthony running towards his brother before enveloping him in a tight hug.
“And I you as well Lady Danbury!” She turned to looked at the older lady before she was turned around the pushed towards the Bridgerton’s.
She promptly walks into a mans chest and two arms wrapped themselves around her.
“Pen….” Colin had whispered in her ear. His voice sounding relieved?
“Colin,” Her voice sounding watery. Her arms raised then she clutched the sides of his clothing aware that his family and everyone else was looking. The societal rules were lax since their world as they knew it ended but she didn’t want to be a sobbing mess in front of his family. She savored this moment for she knew it would end soon.
However, Colin didn’t let go. If anything, he held her tighter.
“I’ve missed you so much,” He sounded choked up and Penelope felt his tears as he lowered himself some more and buried his face on her neck,” I should’ve stayed. I’m so sorry Pen, I should’ve stayed.”
Oh why did he had to do that for?
Penelope started to cry in earnest now. She whimpered as he pulled back a little and put his hands on her face. His green eyes studying her features, his thumps wiping her tears.
“I love you Penelope Featherington,” He bent down to kiss her forehead.
“I’m so sorry I’m late, “ He kissed her nose.
“I’m here now and I’m never leaving you again,” He brushed his lips against hers.
She waited 2 years for her next kiss from this man. She had dreamt of this kiss every night it seemed and so she raised her hands to his neck and pulled him down so that he could give her a real kiss.
And he did and it was glorious!
“Oh god, get a room!” She heard Eloise gagging.
“Oh please, you and Phillip are worse!” Hyacinth crowed.
“I love you too Colin Bridgerton,” Penelope ignored them and just focused on this wonderful man in front of her,”I missed you so very much. I’m glad you’re home.”
It would be only a week before they were husband and wife.
In that week he told them of already being halfway home when the Undead swept through Europe.
How he mostly walked back home to Mayfair. Foraging for food, ammunition, and trying to find a safe place to sleep.
He had eventually made it back to Mayfair and had stopped by the Bridgerton home, grabbing anything that was missed or needed before going over to the Featherington’s. He had made sure to grab some of Penelopes favorite books and some of her clothing. Even going so far as to sleep in her bedroom that night for safety.
He was leaving to start his journey to Aubrey Hall after seeing one of Benedicts paints on the wall of his room stating the family would be located at their ancestral home.
He had used unseemly methods to be able to walk among the Undead was for the most part not accosted.
When he crossed path with Fife and his entourage. He was chased and he was lucky enough to come across Lady Danbury’s home where he stayed with her and healed from the injuries he had sustained.
It would be weeks later but he and Lady Danbury would make their way to Aubrey Hall.
———
They were in bed , Colin was kissing her naked shoulder softly. Letting his lips graze upon her skin before peppering it with kisses.
“You’re freckles here, they remind me of the stars…” She assumed he was kissing said freckles.
“Do they?” She closed her eyes to luxuriate in the feeling of him.
“Yes, I used the stars to make my way home to you,”
Her eyes flew open and she turned around, “ You did?”
“Yes,” He smiled as he enveloped her body closer to his - already eyeing her female pillows that the loved to play with very much,” Every night I wished on a star that you’re safe. I wished I stayed to protect you and my family. I wished for the life I hoped to spend with you. I wished I didn’t run like a coward. I just wish to be exactly where I am now - next to my beautiful wife.”
And those were the final coherent words of the night.
a/n If I ever get better at writing I may make this into a longer series. I haven't really wrote any Phillip/Eloise, Ben/Sophie, Frannie/Michael, and Daphne/Simon to do them any justice for a long regency zombie apocalypse. It would have to be an ensemble multi-pairing story.

Polin Drabbles: Halcyon
Halcyon
Colin stood upon the balcony of his room at Aubrey Hall looking out unto the creeping shadows that grew upon the setting of the sun. The lake, majestic in it’s expansiveness, reflected the reddish-orange hues of the sky. The hill that overlooked the lake and their family home held a magnificent oak tree. It’s branches massive and holds not only the lush leaves but the single swing that has been there longer than he can remember.
How many times has he and his siblings fought over who may use it first.
It seems so long ago.
The halcyon days of their youth was full of adventures and anticipation at the thought of discovering the mysteries of the world around them. It also had the innocence of a child that has not been touched by tragedy.
Days spent laying down on the grassy fields, feeling the winds blow - floating dandelions up in the air as if to carry them away to their own journey to the unknown.
Children’s laughter echo in his mind and with his eyes closed he could almost feel the warmth of the summer seeping unto his skin.
Those were the days he missed the most. That summer before his father died.
It was later that Colin could appreciate those past moments invoked when thinking of the BEFORE.
Leaning on the railing of the balcony with his forearms and interlocking his fingers, Colin breath deeply.
This was where Penelope would visit AFTER.  When Eloise would refuse to speak to anyone other than Pen. How many times had he seen them up in that hill. So very young- his sister sitting on the swing while Penelope pushed her.
Later it was he who would convince the little red-head that the swing could carry her weight. He would push her until her feet flew higher than her head and peals of her laughter permeated the summer air.
As they grew older, Colin remembers nights where they would sit on top of the same hill and lean against that oak tree. There they would talk about their plans of the future. What they think is their purpose is in this life. The places they would like to travel to. In those soft and quiet moments, he could recall how her eyes would twinkle like they were starlight. Her smile so bright that it reminded him of sunshine.
She would say years later that this was where she fell in love with him.
Colin sighed in regret. This is also the place where he would later break her heart with his careless words.
That would be the last summer she spent there with them for years. Those were the years he had spent traveling, knowing that he was searching for something - chasing a feeling but he did now know what it was.
It was Anthony’s wedding to Kate that changed it all.
His brother’s tough exterior was tempered by his love for the intelligent and witty woman. Their wedding brought Penelope back into his life. He had walked out into this very same balcony and saw her.
He. Saw. HER.
She was everything Penelope but more.  She had grown into a beautiful woman whose smile still reminded him of sunshine and blue eyes sparkled like starlight. Red hair like the sunset and her skin looking plush and soft drove him to distraction.
Colin let out a quiet, huffed laughter as he recalled that this was the place where he would later propose. His BEFORE and AFTER now mean the time before she became  his wife and after she becomes his wife.
His new AFTER would be tomorrow - when she would walk towards him. Outside where they had spent so much of their youth and where they were now to be married. The fields where they ran will now contain memories of his family rejoicing in his and Penelopes union. Someday that lone oak tree upon the hill with it’s single swing would have their own children fighting over who would use it first.
He cannot wait.

Polin Drabble - Decorum
For the Quick One Word Polin Prompt: https://the-mini-muse.tumblr.com/post/684037411383148544/quick-one-word-polin-prompts
Decorum -
It’s like she’s lost all sense of propriety and decorum but when Colin Bridgerton walks you to a hidden part of the garden and sticks his tongue down your throat - all good sense flies out the proverbial window. They were on a stone bench where she was laying on her back - his right hand between the back of her head and the cold unyielding stone. Her hands were on his shoulders as he used his other hand beside her head and one of his knees between her legs to keep his weight off of her.
They’ve been engaged less than a week and they’ve already found that keeping away from each other was a monumental task.
They both groaned as he grounded his hips unto hers - Penelope gasped as he moved his lips towards her neck and licked and sucked it quite deliciously.
They were so immersed that they could only stop and look up to see a giggling Sophie and Benedict bursts from between two hedges and beside their hidden alcove with hands already in areas that were best explored in the bedroom.
Catching each others eyes in shock, dismay, and a little bit of embarrassment - the brothers stared mutely at his each other for a couples seconds. However, it was long enough for another pair of giggling voices to burst from the other pathway of the small haven.
With Kate’s back towards them and male hands on her derrière - Anthony popped up from where they could assume his mouth was otherwise occupied. His eyes caught both of his brothers and joined them in their rapidly reddening faces as they all looked at each other - eyes wide and mouths hanging at their predicament.
Within seconds everyone was looking away and rearranging themselves.
Each of the Bridgerton males cleared their throats and as if they were all giving their greetings for afternoon tea - they all took turns nodding to eachother.
“Brother” Anthony nodded to both Colin and Benedict.
“Brother”
“Brother” They both greeted back and to each other.
After an awkward pause - Benedict and Sophie took on a quiet retreat from whence they came. Anthony and Kate turning back to do the same only for the older man to turn around as if to give them a lecture on decorum. It was Colin’s raised eyebrow and mischievous eyes along with that devilish grin on his face that stopped him. His brother glancing between Anthony and Kate while raising his chin - his retort already formed in his throat. Anthony could only sigh as he he followed his wife’s tugging and left.
“Now where were we?” That was the last coherent sentence heard in that little alcove for a while.
-End

Upcoming Polin Story
So I may be writing another soulmate story (#sorrynotsorry) and it's about how the world is shades of grey until you laid your eyes on your soulmate for the first time.
It won't be a drabble. Looks like a decent sized one shot. I think about the size of "Kindle" unless it turns into the monster that is "Formidable"
I'm pretty excited for you guys to read it. :)
here is a teaser:
Penelope thought she may be one of the unlucky ones. She remembers when her mother would say that she had dressed her in yellow since its a very nice color. Penelope happily thought that her parents were soulmates until she caught her mother asking their maid what color of dress was she holding in her hand. As she got older she can see that her parents were very much NOT in love, they barely tolerated each others presence.

Transcendent Chapter 2
a/n sorry for the late update. I was working on Formidable and Convergence then I got sick. Now I'm trying to get back into the flow of writing. Thank you so much for all the likes, reblogs, kudos, and comments. I can't tell you how much they brought me joy.
---
The next morning, Penelope had stayed in her room for breakfast feigning illness. One look at her face and her mother agreed.
She couldn’t understand. There is only one soulmate for every person. One person who completes you in every way. The one person that would make your heart sing with joy and your eyes Colors.
Colors that she could only just start grasping their significance. Her room, once filled with Black and Whites now come in Yellows, Reds, Greens, and Purples.
She had a book that she had kept secret. It was a frivolous buy from a bookstore when she was just a child. As dust covered as it was, it was most precious to her.
It was a little book of colors. It had ribbons of the rainbow. One ribbon for every color and as you turn the page - there would be an explanation of each colors and where you may find them in the world. In the end of the book it had all the ribbons that created a rainbow.
She remembered thinking that someday she would open this book and share it with her soulmate. Her rainbow of colors book contained all of her childish hopes and dreams. Now she touched the book reverently - wishing to go back in time and treasure that hope. Those wistful sighs as she thought of what he may look like. Would he be tall? Would he be short? What would he be like? Did he, too, wished upon a star at night for them to meet soon? Did he talk to the man in the moon when he felt lonely like her?
But now she knew - he had Brown hair, Green eyes, and the most beautiful smile she has ever seen in a man.
And yet she has never danced with him. Conversed with him. She only knew the timbre of his voice and his boisterous laugh.
She just wanted to know more.
More.
More.
Just more.
There just HAD to have been a mistake.
She was his - he HAD to be hers.
She had to talk to Marina. Maybe Colin had two soulmates? There’s just no way that she could have her Colors without meeting her Soulmate. There was no one else.
That thought of Colin not being her soulmate…impossible.
Her mind made up, she wiped her tears and left her bedroom. She heard Marina’s voice downstairs at the drawing room.
She had to talk to her.
Is Colin really her soulmate? Did Marina really see Colors. Part of her hated to think so lowly of her cousin - who has been nothing but a wonderful friend since she came to live with them.
They can’t be soulmates. They just can’t be.
And yet there they were.
Penelope had shuffled into the drawing room just as Colin had gone down on his knee and asked Marina to be his wife. His WIFE.
Oh.
Everyone turned towards her.
She didn’t even know she had made a sound. Marina looked at her in concern while Colin only spared her only a glance before looking back up at her cousin.
“Oh you are ruining this magical moment!,” Her mother hissed, ushering her from the room. The last thing she saw was Marina’s worried eye’s on her.
Her mother was scolding her as she pulled Penelope away and guided her up to her bedroom with a bruising grip on her wrist. Not that Penelope noticed after hearing Marina agreeing and Colin’s shout of joy - echoing.
“Get inside your room and just stay there, I can’t believe you made me miss it!,” Her mother grumbled as she left, “such a selfish girl. Oh what did I do wrong to have such a daugh-“
Thankfully her mothers words were no longer audible.
Feeling exhausted and numb Penelope closed the door and sat back on the edge of her bed.
No.
There was nothing to it.
No.
Marina and Colin were engaged.
No.
Why ever not - since they are soulmates.
No.
Curling up into a ball, she stayed in bed for the rest of the day.
It was like a law of equivalent exchange.
Her colors came and filled her world and in return it sucked out all the joy she felt and will feel. Her mind still trying to refuse her reality.
She was caught between despair and numbness. Where breathing brought tears yet she felt disconnected with the world around her.
All the stories she’s read about soulmates left a bitter taste in her mouth. She felt lied to. ——
A soft knock woke her from her fitful sleep.
“Come in, “ She noted that her voice sounded hoarse.
The door made a soft noise as it opened and closed. Penelope looked up at the mirror beside her bed and saw that it was Marina leaning against her door.
“How are you feeling?” Her cousin was most kind.
But she just had to ask.
“Is Colin Bridgerton really your soulmate?” She had turned around to face her.
Marina jerked back as if Penelope had slapped her. The taller lady shook her head, crossed her arms, and took a deep breath.
“What is this about Penelope?” Her cousin looked at her straight in the eyes.
“Colin Bridgerton -“
“Is my fiancé. We are to be married. I was so very lucky to have met him. He sees me as his soulmate, a woman, and future wife. So what exactly are you asking?”Marina had raised her chin up almost defiantly.
Penelope felt the last bit of fire in her flicker and die. How horrible was she to have asked her dear cousin such a question.
Memories of Colin’s face - the utter wonder and joy that lit up his eyes.
Marina was obviously Colin’s soulmate.
She bit her lip and looked away and meekly replied,” Nothing. Forget I said such a thing.”
“I’m so sorry Penelope,” Marina had walked over and hugged her tightly.
Oh her sweet and kind cousin. Penelope felt worse. It wasn’t Marina’s fault that whatever higher power up there had decided for Penelope to have a part of what should’ve only been a bond between Marina and Colin.
“I am so sorry,” Her cousin rubbed her back before pulling back and giving her a sad smile,”I heard that you weren’t feeling very well so I can to see if there was anything I can do?”
“ No no. This. Whatever this is will pass,” She tried to convince her kindhearted cousin. She was here to tell her about their engagement to be sure and share in the joy of her finding her soulmate but here Penelope was making it about herself. Her mother was right. She was terribly selfish.
“ So you are engaged now?” Those words painfully left her lips.
“Yes. I hope we marry as soon as possible.” Marina looked off to the side of the room,” I just can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with my soulmate.”
“…I am so happy for you,”She had to be supportive.
“ You are too kind Penelope,” Marina stood up to leave with an almost sad look to her face. Then she was gone and Penelope was left alone with her thoughts.
The bitter disappointment of realizing that out of the whole wide world, SHE was the only one to not have a soulmate to reciprocate that love and connection that all soulmates share.
He may not be hers but she is his. With pain in her chest, Penelope vowed to do anything to make sure that Colin Bridgerton would always have that happy smile on his face.

Polin Drabble - Quibble
Quibble aka The one that's inspired by BtVS - Dark Colin.
He was behind her. So close but not quite touching her.
Yet.
His lips tickled her ear and a shiver ran through Penelope.
“I can hear your heart beating so fast, Pen,” Colin his fingers ran down the side of her arms - from shoulder to wrists.
Her heart was breaking all over again,”Colin, don’t do this. Let me save you.”
“Save me? I’ve never felt better in my life Penelope,”His arms now hugged her from behind, his body folding unto himself due to their height difference. Almost like a lovers embrace,” and I want you to feel good too. Don’t deny it. Pen-El-O-Pe…”
——
Penelope had moved to Mayfair a year ago. She had met her now best friend Eloise and her odd family.
She didn’t know yet about vampires, witches, and demons.
She didn’t know anything yet of the Slayer.
Daphne was a year older than her and Eloise and already burdened with the task of fighting supernatural creatures that dare to harm humans.
She had been a Slayer for two years now.
Her whole family had rallied behind her - one by one learning of her secret.
Anthony had wanted to move somewhere else - safe. Her watcher - Kate Sharma- disabused him of the idea of Daphne ever being safe.
Mayfair was where the Hellmouth resided. It is where Daphne was most needed.
Most of the time she patrolled with Kate, Anthony, Benedict, Colin, and Eloise - never alone.
Now with the addition of Simon, a Dukes graduate and friend of Anthony’s, and Penelope.
Then Anthony had got bitten by a werewolf this past year.
They had to adjust.
Especially Kate who he was engaged to be married.
Wanting to help, Eloise and Penelope started to dabble in witchcraft and found that they both have the affinity for it. They didn’t know that they would be using their powers for this though.
——
Staring straight at those beautiful green eyes, Penelope watched him draw near and give her lips soft kisses. His arms wrapping around her once more, possessively.
She felt dizzy with want. He always had that affect on her.
But this wasn’t her Colin. Not really.
She raised a hand to his chest and whimpered due to the lack of heartbeat upon her palm. Lips on her neck, nuzzling her skin but missing the warmth of his breath.
Colin.
From the very first time she met him, her heart was forever stolen.
Cressida Cowper had pushed her in the stairs of the outside courtyard of her new school.
She would’ve fallen and been hurt grievously if Colin wasn’t right behind her. His arms shot out and enveloped her in a tight hug, never letting her spin as she fell.
It was the day she fell on and for Colin Bridgerton.
She was in tears at the thought of hurting her savior but he just laughed and laughed and asked her if she was ok. He became her best friend. Her charming, kind, handsome unrequited love. Her only quibble with him is how unfairly good looking he was since all the other girls noticed it too.
His face now showed a mockery of Colin’s charming smile as he flashed her his fangs before going back down to kissing her neck.
“I can give you back your soul!”
With the quickness of a predator, Colin brought his face up so that they were almost nose to nose. His green eyes looking at her with anger and desire.
Always desire.
Her mind going to all the instances that he had been stalking her.
Leaving love letters.
No.
Letters of his desire for her.
His ownership of her.
His Pen.
Every time she turned around, he was there watching. She may not have seen him but he was always in the vicinity of her senses. She always knew when he was near, even before he was turned.
She had started avoiding Daphne because of this.
She knew the Slayer had a duty to kill vampires and when Colin was bitten by Marina, everyone was devastated.
He was able to get away.
But now he’s back and he’s been stalking Penelope. Only Eloise knew and they’ve been researching how a vampire may gain his soul back.
“My. Pen,” He licked her lips before diving deep within her mouth. Tasting her.
“Let her go!” Daphne’s voice rang out.
He pulled back to turn around just in time to see the rest of the gang go through the church doors.
He put Penelope in front of him, one arm around her torso, holding her possessively,” Ah. My sister. The Slayer and you brought company. “
Penelope saw Eloise, Francesca, and Kate run off to the side - creating markings for the spell.
THE spell to return Colin’s soul.
Daphne, Anthony, Benedict, and Simon standing ready to fight.
“I said let her go Colin,” Daphne twirled her stake as a show of intimidation.
“I think not. She belongs to me. She has ALWAYS belonged to me,”His grip tightened.
“Colin, I love you,”Penelope whispered,” and I’m so sorry -Ignis Incende!”
She directed the spell on the cloak he was wearing. It caught on fire immediately and in his haste to take it off, he let go of her.
She ran towards Daphne.
“No!!! Penelope!!!” Colin yelled in rage.
His face now morphing into its Vampire counterpart before leaping towards her.
Simon grabbed Penelope just as Daphne knocked away the hand that would’ve pulled her back to him.
“This really wasn’t one of your smartest moves brother.” Anthony backed up his sister, sword in hand. Benedict beside him with an axe.
Penelope had tears in her eyes as Colin fought his siblings. She turned towards Eloise and started to chant with her.
Quod perditum est, invenietur.
Not dead, nor not of the living.
Spirits of the interregnum, I call.
Gods, bind him. Cast his heart from the evil realm.
Te implor, Doamne; nu ignoră aceasta rugăminte!
Nici mort, nici al fiinţei,
lăsa orbită să fie vasul care-i vă transportă sufletul la el.
Aşa să fie! Aşa să fie!
Acum! Acum!
They all looked up as a bright light enveloped Colin. It was so bright they all had to cover their eyes.
Then with a loud boom. The room was silent again.
“Ignis Incende”
“Ignis Incende”
Penelope and Eloise started lighting up nearby candelabras.
In the middle of the room, crouching on the floor was Colin.
He was shivering and crying uncontrollably. Anthony and Daphne was the first one there checking to see if there was any wounds on his person.
Penelope skidded down beside them and wrapped her arms around him, tucked his face under her chin and pressed her face on the top of his head. Colin just continued to cry desperately as he wrapped his arms around Penelope’s middle.
She looked up at his siblings, all with tears in their eyes. They were glad to have their brother back but it would not be the same.
He was still a vampire.
Colin is part of the Bridgerton family, the vampire with a soul, brother to the Slayer and Penelope’s beloved.
They will adjust like always.
A/N incantations not mine.

Polin Drabble - Convergence Part 1
The first part of the long awaited sequel to Wallow. Colins POV.
Convergence Part 1
Colin Bridgerton woke up with a smile on his face.
Penelope.
His beautiful Pen loved him and agreed to marry him.
He sat up with a wince. He rubbed his lower back, surely bruised where Anthony fell atop of him as they hurriedly climbed down the oak treee last night. Anthony does not look like it but the old man had some weight to him.  Probably gained some weight from happiness with Kate. Although one would think once you are married you would lose all the weight due to all the physical exertions.
Still sitting up with his legs bent, he leaned back a bit, laying his hands behind him on the bed to keep him from falling on his back. Colin looked at the present wrapped in yellow and pink silk on his table and couldn’t help but grin.
Inside was some beautiful ribbons in Bridgerton blue, sunflower yellow, and forest green. He had seen it on his way home from his travels and came upon a merchant from the Far East. He had thought it a bit pricy but he knew that Penelope would look lovely wearing it upon her hair.  And so he bought them with the intention of giving it to her when he got back.
However, he never got a chance to give it to her. His family had moved to Number 5 in part to give Kate and Anthony the privacy they SORELY needed. Their proclivities to show their deep affection for each other was not isolated in the bedroom. He grimaced at the multitude of times he’s seen his older brother’s naked derrière. Those two had no compulsion to stop using places they should not engage such activities in- closets, gardens, Anthony’s study.  He shook his head.
Not to mention it took him a couple of days to realize that Penelope never visited Eloise - unheard of!  With his sister closed lipped as to what caused their falling out, Colin resolved to speak with Penelope himself.
So he went to pay a visit to Penelope, only to be told that she was not home.  It seemed she was not home the next day or the day after that. It was pure coincidence that he came upon Penelope at Hyde Park with Anthony and the Sharmas.
She looked particularly pretty this morning, her red hair shimmering in different reddish hues as the sunlight hit them. Her blue dress matched the color of her eyes which twinkled happily. Her smile was…enchanting? He had shaken his head and made his way faster to join her after hearing the bell-like sounds of her giggles.
However, when he made his greetings, her demeanor changed. it seemed as if grey clouds have shrouded her face - her light disappearing. She no longer seemed like sunshine.
His excitement dimmed when he realized that Penelope would continue to be subdued, barely participating in his and Edwina’s conversations. Kate’s sister raised an eyebrow questioningly and looked between Pen and himself confused. He started talking about his travels in hopes to pull Penelope with her witty remarks and for her usual excitement to come through.
Nothing.
So he made due with Edwina as they spoke more of some of the embarrassing moments in his brothers life that he was sure would delight Kate when her sister relays them to her.
It was later as he watched Edwina leaving with her mother that a thought crossed his mind. He did not miss Kates speculative looks between them, no doubt his mother would be hearing of his time with Edwina post haste.  He sighted, this will be another name on his mothers list, he was sure of it. It seems as if a man could not simply have a woman as a friend. This was the first time he had spent any sort of time with Edwina - hardly enough time to gauge her qualities other than the superficial ones. His mother should know that he was not one to pick a wife based on just her looks, especially after his naive actions with Marina.
“Miss Sharma is quite beautiful isn’t she Pen?” Oh yes, his mother and now possibly Kate would play matchmaker.
“She was last season’s diamond after all,” She had answered him. He was glad to get a response from her.
“That she was. Pen don’t you think it would be improper for me to court Miss Sharma?” He looked at Penelope, incredulously ” After all, she was engaged to my brother.”
She seemed to think of her answer before replying to him,” Would that stop you if you felt a connection with her Colin?”
Well, if he did feel a connection with someone then of course not.
“I suppose not,” He turned his gaze back at the retreating lady and promised himself to take the time and speak with her. Edwina Sharma was indeed beautiful, graceful, and well-read; however, he felt nothing more than the enjoyment of a good conversation with her.
”Your happiness is important too. If Miss Sharma is a lady you can imagine yourself courting then you are already halfway there in your decision. As you said, she is beautiful and it looked like the interest is reciprocated.”
Oh good God no.
He really needs to find the time to speak to Edwina soon. Very soon. He had no wish to play with a lady’s feelings. Besides, he was uncomfortable with the idea of being in any sort of entanglement with his brothers ex-fiance and no doubt Kate would string him up by his manly bits if she even thinks that he toyed with her sisters feelings.
It was then that Penelope’s maid cleared her throat and they realized that Penelope’s mother has been trying to get their attention. Penelope gave a short curtsy,”Enjoy the rest of your day Mr. Bridgerton.” And left.
…….
Mr. Bridgerton?
…….
MR. BRIDGERTON?!
