Momar and I are the only ones who venture during daylight hours beyond the protective UV-coated atrium surrounding the schoolyard. Momar tells me that she's not equipped to combat much, but exposure to the sun is the one thing she does not fear. She tells a tale of kids who have never tasted outside air, her nose crinkled like she has never before heard anything so pathetic. "These kids, they live their whole lives behind blackout curtains, a simulated existence rendered for them from stolen imagery of the outside world, like one of those old-school, first-person video games where everyone you encounter looks like somebody, everything like a thing. Looking in on the #lastfriday2017 ___________________________________________ I've made some strides in the past year, found another venue or two willing to share my work. I suffered a couple setbacks. Zigged when I should have zagged. Zagged when maybe I should have just continued to zig two or three times straight. Had at least one do over - writers need readers, not other writers paying for the privilege to read each other's stuff. That's not how this thing is supposed to work. I exercised my right to say no, to step away from an opportunity that is not working for me. I've come to understand that you don't need to be loud to be heard. But you must be persistent. I am reminded that this writing thing is a long haul, that the path to continued publication has lots of twists and turns, not bound to align on its own with my every want and wish. Still, I remain hopeful that this revised approach will pay dividends in the coming year. I am especially enthusiastic about the couple projects still in the works: #themeekscifiseries and #sunissky Forces beyond my immediate control will ultimately dictate the pace, but trust that I am keeping the pressure up on my end to see that they make it to the outside world. Anyplace we go, it is with full military escort, the windows of the transport vehicle tinted the same dreadful blue. Everybody's least favorite color is blue. The argon glass tints the whole outside world an odd hue. I pretend that I'm floating near the bottom of the sea or walking on the face of the moon. Even the Sun is a hot piercing blue spot, lined on one side in a delicate red arc where the double paned glass bends the light in two. Either that or the argon gas has begun to fail, the red outline marking a crevice like the inside surround of a door frame letting in a bit of the light the door has lost the ability to keep out. It consumes the whole of her head. She claims it helps with the sun. Her skin, rich and dark like mine, has yet to show the first signs of aging. But she's had cataract surgery three times already, twice in the left eye, once in the right. Four is the most the current guidelines for restorative procedures the government health-care system will allow. We skirt along the tracks in the direction of the rowing basin. Momar has got it in her head to make it across the Schuylkill and enjoy one last stroll through Magic Gardens. She has loved something or someone within the confines of those passageways that still has its hold on her. A string of abandoned railroad cars, lifted like a toy train by a storm surge, lies partially submerged in still pools of water. This marks the end of the line for us yet again today. Tomorrow might yield an additional bit of dry land.
