A heartbeat. At first, it was faint, but it gained a stronger, healthier momentum with time. The redheaded girl tried opening her eyelids, but they felt heavier than lead. After several tries, she managed to get a small glimpse of a blinding fluorescent light, before the drugs forced her back into blackness. Deep blackness that seemed to extended forever.

Foxface stretched herself onto the fluffy, Capitol comforter. Her pale fingers picked at the soft sheets, while her mind reeled. She refused to close her eyes for less than a second. Foxface didn’t dare admit it out loud, but in the back of her mind she felt that if she slept, even for a moment, drugs would be shot up her arm and she’d never open her eyes again. She would be forever trapped in the dreamless, morphling-induced coma. Foxface sat up slowly; her hands still traced the gentle bedding. For a brief moment, Foxface wondered how the others had fared once they realized they had been revived. Had some of them been scared? Had some of them been happy? Had they simply accepted and adjusted as quickly as she had? Foxface smiled as she recalled the appalled looks on the Capitol nurses’ faces as she quickly digested and understood their information with ease. Though, Foxface had to admit, she had been dismayed to learn that she had been brought back from death to be thrown back into the arena. However, Foxface chose to look at her situation as an opportunity to adjust herself. She’d be able to assess the situation more accurately this time around. The first arena had educated her on several accounts. Foxface knew the other tributes would be caught up in their own petty revenge schemes; she would just have to wait them out. They’d slaughter themselves. Foxface wouldn’t have to even touch a weapon. All she had to do was keep herself alive, and that was one thing Foxface excelled at. And this time, her downfall wouldn’t be fruit. 

Foxface glided toward the window, the night sky seemed painted with the multi-colored lights from the Capitol. It was just like she remembered, superfluous and loud. No doubt the civilians were celebrating the highly anticipated Hunger Games that would soon unfold. As soon as Foxface had decided to turn away from it all, she caught her reflection in the polished glass. Her features had been perfectly preserved by the Capitol’s doctors and machinery. Her eyes still had their emerald pigment, her skin was as pale as ever, and her lips still had their chapped, rosy shade. The only noticeable difference was that her fiery mane’s wild curls had been tamed by her stylists’ straightening iron. Foxface hadn’t a scar or blemish in sight. It was as if nothing had changed.
