Мир тесен и непредсказуем в своей маршрутизации. Где-то в середине осени, готовясь к съёмкам клипа на песню #ЗОЖ, мы решили, что мы ещё снимем и на английскую версию кадров. Возникла необходимость в текстах. Music Geeks Interview: The Blackfires guitarist, Anthony Mullin

Music Geeks: What prompted you to become a musician?

The Blackfires Guitarist, Anthony Mullin: For me I’d have to blame my dad and I suppose my brother as well. They were big into rock, blues, and metal so I grew up hearing it. My brother bought me my first CD, Appetite For Destruction (I won’t tell you who it’s by) and I remember him wearing Metallica T-Shirts. I was hooked. I heard a lot of great music and I remember playing air guitar to it, but I never thought I was musical myself. Until…on my 15thbirthday my Dad bought me an acoustic guitar. It sat in the corner untouched for 3 months before I worked up enough courage to play it. I couldn’t read music but some friend’s who also played showed me tablature and the Online Guitar Archive (OLGA). Numbers on a page. And so I was off to the races and never looked back. Still haven’t had a lesson but as I progressed I thought it was a real possibility for me to play professionally, or at least give it a go. My Dad also had a recording studio and was loosely doing A&R by the time I was 15 so being around bands like The Music, Embrace, and Kaiser Chiefs also inspired me. Different sound to what I wanted to do but great fucking bands nonetheless.

MG: Who would you say are your biggest influences?

Mullin: Let’s start with Aerosmith. Both Brad and Joe are a big influence on my playing. Brad is typically described as the more schooled of the two which is technically true I suppose but having jammed with him I can tell you he’s pretty raw when he wants to be. And of course Joe has that swagger he’s famous for. Slash as well is incredible and continues to push the boundaries like he did with [Guns N’ Roses]. [Stevie Ray Vaughn] for obvious reasons. Eric Johnson, AC/DC, Metallica, Megadeth, Black Label Society. The common theme is they all have compelling guitar as part of their sound; it draws you in. And also makes you (at least me) want to play and strive to play at that level.

MG: Describe a typical day for yourself?

Mullin: It varies for each band member but for me it goes a bit like this. Early up and either a run or the gym. I’m a doctor so weekdays I work in a hospital. I’m a psychologist so I spend my days conducting psychotherapy both group and individual. Also I do psychological assessment. When I leave a different type of fun begins. We rehearse a lot so typically I head to the studio and we rehearse into the night. If it isn’t a rehearsal I tend to practice guitar at home or go and sit in at BB King’s or The Red Lion and play blues. Tuesday’s I sit in with a blues band in Tribeca. I love blues and it keeps me sharp. You learn a lot from sitting in.

MG: Do you have any preshow rituals?

Mullin: Once soundcheck is finished I like to stay in the green room and warm-up. Like I said I love to play blues so after warming up I like play [Stevie Ray Vaughn] or something like that. I’ll probably also chase down the promoter for some refreshments. I like to have one or two to before going on and some aren’t as diligent about making sure the fridges are filled. If it’s a particularly big show I prefer to stay backstage as I like to stay focussed before we go on. If I go out front I end up getting distracted by friends etc…

MG: If you could play with one artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Mullin: It’s a really difficult one to answer but I’m going to pick someone who is dead since the one’s that are still with us I can hold out for. I’d have to say [Stevie Ray Vaughn]. His playing was incendiary and devastating. Just watch the live footage and you’ll get it like Texas Flood from Austin City Limits. He ended up playing with and being respected by those who influenced him, which is no mean feat. Like Clapton said he seemed to have a direct line to the blues. And why play with him? For the experience, to trade licks with someone who inspires me, and to learn something. The times I’ve played with famous guitarists I’ve taken something away from it and incorporated it into my playing.

MG: You guys released your debut album Live at The Cutting Room to much critical success. What can we expect from your upcoming second album?

Mullin: Released to critical success? We did? Just kidding. It’s been a long time since that release but with the line-up change and the pedigree we’ve earned ourselves I’d people can expect a more evolved sound. I mean we’ve heard that from the people who’ve seen us play as this line-up so it’s logical to say that. The second album is going to be more sophisticated with our influences more clearly on show. I’ve written a lot of bluesy tunes lately (open tunings, slide, shuffle grooves) and so they’ll be on there. We’ll also highlight our metal roots a bit and have really worked hard on our vocal harmonies. I feel like Cheggi’s voice has improved even more so get ready for that. And Joe is also a very strong singer so be forewarned. Hector and Sebastian certainly drove the more metal side of things to an almost Black Sabbath effect in places. We’re excited to hear what people think.

MG: What role does your international roots have in the music you play?

Mullin: These are great questions by the way. I suppose there’s no way they aren’t going to have an influence on the music we play. But as an aside point, despite being from so many different places in the world, we all love rock in some form and those are the common influences that drew us together. Anyway back to the question. Me being from the UK there are a few different influences I’d say. We’re credited for bands like The Stones, Beatles, Zeppelin and how they influenced/were influenced by the US. So there’s a rock and blues influence for me certainly. In a different way I also loved bands like Oasis and their approach to song-writing and song lyrics is something that’s been more and less conscious depending on how I’m feeling. More generally speaking I’ve felt that being from the UK and playing music in the US means that I have to say something, or should say something. What that is I haven’t quite worked out. I suppose the sentiment generally is that people will be moved by what we play. I can’t speak directly for the lads but I’ve heard Cheggi say countless times that because of the censorship going on in the USSR, rock music was something he wanted but couldn’t have. Once he could listen to it clandestine or otherwise, he wanted to be a rock n’ roll singer. And look how far he’s come. In a lesser way for Sebastian & Hector from Uruguay & Costa Rica respectively, they also didn’t have much access to rock music and so had to openly search for it. I believe their cultures also influence some of the different time signatures we’ve had. Hector also does some nice arpeggiated stuff on guitar, which has a Latin flavour.

MG: What was it like to open for Aerosmith in Moscow?

Mullin: Hard to fully describe but I’ll try. It was a dream come true, plus a mixture of a lot of emotions – excitement, anxiety, and self-doubt. It was also surreal. Approaching the stadium I felt small. Then I thought, “Okay so this is really happening, it’s go time.”

We didn’t get as much of a sound check as we wanted, so that added to the anxiety. Even before the first song the crowd was roaring. Once we dug into that first song there was no looking back. The crowd was giving off so much energy and responding to us that I have to say it’s the most fun I’ve had with my clothes on. Girls in the front row even threw flowers – which never hurts. I think for Cheggi it was even more of a plus coming to his hometown. The prodigal son returned, with the proof that dreams can be realized (he’d left a good job in football journalism to come and sing in NYC). Both his parents and my dad were there too, so there was a feeling of pride to do that in front of them.

Having my dad there to watch was huge since he’s been a massive supporter of my music. Like I said he bought me my first guitar, so without him I’m not sure I’d have gotten into music. A moment that stands out as well was talking to Brad Whitford – who’s been a huge influence on my playing – before going onstage really was magic. I’ve known him for years now, but to have him waiting there as the house lights went down saying “Good luck have a great show, I’ll be watching from the side here,” these are the moments you live for. Also I reckon there’s no better talisman than before playing the biggest gig of your life so far.
