WIP WEDNESDAY!!!!

Beneath the cut is another excerpt from my SilMil AU fic titled:

A Waltz of Silver and Gold

Serenity slowly approached the staircase and looked out over the ballroom. Men and women wearing garments of all colors dotted the dance floor below in a synchronized waltz. The movements of the dancers below were almost hypnotic as she watched all the colors swirl together. Candlelight reflected off of the various pieces of jewelry donned by the guests causing the room to sparkle. Soft music floated in the air and the warmth of the energy in the ballroom danced across her skin. She had been so excited all day while getting ready for her birthday masquerade; however, now she was feeling anxiety and trepidation.

This was her first ball.

I finished a draft of Skyfallen last night. It’s 125,565 words according to Scrivener’s word count, excluding character backgrounds, setting info, worldbuilding, and in-world folklore and tales.

It’s incredibly rough. It’s the dirtiest draft I’ve ever produced. It’s also the longest thing I’ve ever written in pretty much one go. But it’s finished, dammit, and while it needs a lot of polishing and editing and cleanup (and whatever other Marie Kondo inspired phrase comes to mind) it’s complete. There’s a character arc--several of them, in fact. There’s an identifiable beginning, middle, and end. 

There’s an actual end. 

It doesn't peter out because I lost interest. It doesn’t just stop because I don’t know where it goes, or I do but I’m afraid to write it. It has a concrete end that connects to the rest of it.

I’m both sad because the initial writing part is done, but I’m stoked to start improving this thing to be readable. Woo! I get to go back and read what I already wrote, not because I’m avoiding adding to it, but because I need to. That’s the next step.

I’m so excited!

Fastdrafting HtDO: Week 12 Summary

My original goal, with only ~3k words left to go, was to finish a week early (the final day is May 21). Unfortunately, a lot has happened--saying goodbye to friends, finding a subletter, taking my last exam of my undergrad, so this will be a very short post.

Goal not met, 318 / 3300 words.

Current word count: 47,021 / 50,000.

Words left: 2,799.

Thankfully, I have a couple days this week before my graduation on May 22, so I should still be able to finish within the 90 days.

WIP Wednesday

Playing with original fiction -- maybe the thought of posting every Wednesday for @the-wip-project will keep me motivated.

She nodded.  “Good.”  There was a long pause, and Adam steeled himself for the latest round of condolences.  Only a handful of people would know about Julia, but Martha was one of them, of course.  It was to this cottage he’d returned that night, alone, after the hours of frantic searching had been officially called off.

But no flood of useless platitudes followed.

“I’ll leave you to it, then,” she said, handing him a set of keys.  “Call me if there’s anything you can’t figure out on your own.”  With that, she turned and headed along the path to her house, shaded and partially obscured by the live oaks that grew, gnarled and twisted by ocean winds.

Adam stood for a long moment, staring at the cottage.  He remembered Julia going through the front door for the first time, looking back over her shoulder at him, her sun-streaked hair falling out of a haphazardly placed clip in waves around her face.  The worn pebbled path took him to the front door, and he went inside, closing the door quietly behind him.

He didn’t question the laughter he heard drifting down the narrow staircase.  Julia’s laughter.

He’d found her here, just as he’d hoped.

Posting a sneak-peak of this now because I'm about to be In The Shit school workload-wise, so this'll take me a while to finish.

Doing some character design exploration/expression sheets for Celestia and Luna. Figuring out Celestia's weird ass anatomy while I'm at it.

People on the discord have already seen me musing about a project for the next year. Something like "write a short story in 60 days". That would mean like 4000 - 6000 words, with weekly check-ins.

I'm still percolating the specifics in my head, but I just wanted to give you guys a heads up.

I'll make an official post soon.

WIP Wednesday

Taking a break from Phil for a moment with a new character background. Here's a snippet:

I probably ought to mention at this point that Coke’s my brother, and he got his nickname when we were kids because that’s the only thing he ever drank if he could help it. The other kind of coke came later.

Mom and Dad would only pay toward “practical” degrees. And by “pay” I mean “cosign loans.” For Coke that wound up being finance--hence the accounting convention--while mine was marketing. God I hate marketing. It was, however, a major where I could spin taking art, music, and literature classes to my parents as career-related. I guess I did learn something from marketing classes. Ugh. Still hate it.

Although I did land a part-time job in the university library, which mostly meant getting paid to read but looks good on CVs.

After college Coke got snapped up by a high-finance firm. They paid off his student loans, which meant he was free and clear from Mom and Dad, albeit now in hock to Franklin, Franklin, Boones, Westin, and Reddy. I landed a commercial design position which paid a hell of a lot less than Coke’s and didn't buy my student loans, but at least I got to make art.

I hated every minute of it.

At the time I thought Coke hated his day job as much as I did mine. Now I’m not so sure, but I was then. I doodled and composed on company time; we’d get together at the end of the week and jam to blow off steam. It was just something to do. I designed some stuff for local bands mostly as a favor or in trade. Singles covers, posters, website artwork, that sort of thing. After Ian started hanging out with us and later Kaori we drifted from goofing off in the back of Guitar World on weekends to actual Band.
