Blue Bird Symbolism and the number 101
I wasn’t the only one struck by all the parallels between Rick, Beth and Daryl in TWDDD 1x1 L’ame Perdue. @galadrieljones’ addition to this already excellent post by @angelthefirst1 really highlighted the similarities of the imagery, and I have thoughts on why this is.
In the opening scenes of TWDDD season 1 episode 1, we see this:
An unconcious Daryl, floating on top of an overturned (later I’ll come to describe it as inverted) dinghy. We first see him from below the water’s surface, suggesting there’s heavy “underworld” themes present.
Likewise, in the first scene of the main series, we saw Rick wake up from his unconscious state. He had been put there because of a car chase gone wrong, there had been a "third shooter", emerging here from an overturned (inverted) car.
And interestingly, the inverted car from which the unexpected third man emerged, had licence plates, which in its inverted state, could be read as 508X, which interestingly happens to be the episode when Beth "died" (but not really) namely 5x8 Coda.
Rick was put in hospital by a shooter emerging from an overturned (inverted) car. Daryl washed up onto French shores on top of an overturned (inverted) dinghy, and Beth "died" (but not really) after staying in a hospital run by police officers in an episode that was forshadowed by the licence plate of the overturned (inverted) car that caused Ricks near death experience, because of the unexpected third shooter.
What’s going on with these themes of inverted vessels? And what does it have to do with Blue Bird symbolism and the number 101?
One of the main reasons for why I jumped wholeheartedly into TD back in the day was what I’ve since come to refer to as "Noah’s T-Shirt Theory" . The short version is that I developed a theory based on a special placement of Noah’s T-shirt in relation to other objects in a scene from 5x? Try. I already knew his T-shirt was important, due to the stylized heron. We last saw this particular heron in a scene from 4x12 Still, where Beth and Daryl make they way through the "underworld" landscape of the abandoned golf club in Still. It was later confirmed on TTD that the imagery was based on the nine circles of hell by Dante. This is important, as we’ll discuss "underwolrd themes later. I’ve also discussed in relation to 10x18 Find Me, and I often refer to it as "The Realm of the Dead". More on that later.
In 4x12 Still, Beth and Daryl make their way through the underworld landscape of the Pine Vista Golf Club club. As they come out through the labyrinth, they walk past a painting by John James Audubon called Blue Heron. As they pass it, Beth exclaims "We made it"!
We later meet Noah, we learn that he wears a t-shirt with a stylized heron and the words “one one”. He later dies. When we in 5x15 Try saw Michonne hold up Noah’s T-shirt against the backdropp of a drawing of an octopus, I theorized that perhaps this was a hidden clue to episode 8x2. I wondered if we would see something related to the blue heron, something related to resurrection in some way shape or form, which sound incredibly dumb and massively like reaching for straws….
except I was right . We did see a heron.
In a split second shot in episode 8x2 The Damned, we saw an identical blue heron painting behind rick. It was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it kind of thing, but it was there. The Blue Heron painting from Still had a direct correlation to Noah's T-shirt, which again foreshadowed the Blue Heron painting in 8x2.
For me, this has always been one of my main reasons for believing in the possibility that perhaps Beth did survive after Coda, and it remains to this day a crucial part of all my theories.
Why am I going on about this again, when I’ve already written about it excessively?
Because Episode 8x2 The Damned was series number 101.
I usually format episode numbers like this: 1x1
but you could also say "one one"……
...like it said on Noah's T-shirt.
In the Maggie-Negan spin off TWD: Dead City we finally got the answer to something I’ve been curious about for a long time.
In TWD: Dead City 1x5, Stories We Tell Ourselves, tptb finally confirmed how we’re supposed to interpret the “one one” of Noah’s t-shirt. We see Negan and the Marshall seek refuge in a yellow school bus. We were given clear view of the Blue Bird logo and the number 101 several times. This is something I've been tracking ever since the days of developing Noah's T-shirt theory. We've seen many yellow school buses over the years. Some have been of the Blue Bird brand, others have been more non-descript, and we have certainly never seen anything quite so demonstrantive obvious like what we saw in TWDDC 1x5.
They had Negan pose in front of the Blue Bird logo and the 101 sign for far too long for it to be a coincidence, this is the type of filming that's meant to showcase symbolism language.
And, because I have no self control, I'll include another reason for why the blue bird symbolism combined with the 101 = 8x2 is so exiting. Remember this red fire engine? Last seen in Coda under the most tragic of circumstances?
It says "82" there on the door, although it doesen't show up very well on this picture. That's Engine 82, my friends. 82, a reference to episode 8x2 The Damned, in which we saw the Blue Heron painting again. The painting first seen in 4x12 Still, as Beth exlaimed "We made it". And yes, the painting forshadowed by Noah's T-shirt.
So why is it a big deal that the blue heron symbolism and the numbers 101 are meant to be read together? And what does any of this have to do with Daryl making landfall on a Mediterranean beach like he’s Aphrodite incarnate?
And how does any of this relate to Beth?
In my opinion, the numbers 101, or "one one" refer to episode 1x1 Days Gone By.
1x1 is the first episode of the entire franchise, where we get introduced to the universe and its main character Rick. This is where we learn the whole premise of the show, which is literally about waking up from the dead. We see Rick wake up in a hospital, he has been left for dead, and he wakes up to a world where everything is turned upside down and the dead are walking the earth.
Of course we later see Beth wake up in a eeringly similar manner at Grady, and now, after TWD: Daryl Dixon 1x1 L’ame Perdue, we can add Daryl to this list.
And let's appreciate how the numbers 101, or "one one", or simply 1x1 are involved in all these "awakenings". Rick woke up in the main show episode 1 of season 1, or 1x1, or 101, or "one one".
Daryl woke up in his spin off series, episode 1 of season 1, or 1x1, or 101, or "one one".
Beth woke up in Slabtown, which is the episode where she sacrificed her own freedom so Noah could escape, which in turn meant he could later run into Daryl and Carol, and lead them to reunite with Beth. All while wearing a T-shirt with a stylized version of the blue heron and the numbers "one one".
My hypothesis is that the numbers "one one" on Noah’s T-shirt along with the stylized heron is a reference to Rick waking up in the hospital in 1x1.
In this post from a few years ago I talk about the blue clue symbolism that imo surrounds Beth and Rick. I won’t discuss all that here but the gist of it is that the blue primarily can be understood as a reference to Rick, a police officer (police = blue). Again, Beth is surrounded by the same symbolism because she was named the "new sheriff in town",
plus she literally woke up at a hospital controlled by police officers.
Daryl, who woke up in a similar way in France, actually did work as a police officer at the Commonwealth, plus he now wears a “uniform” made of a tarp turned poncho.
And where we've seen both Beth and Rick near paintings of Blue Herons, we've seen Daryl like this:
This is from TWD 9x6 Who Are You Now. We hear Michonne's voice talking about keeping the hope alive and never giving up, while Daryl has this brief encounter with the Blue Bird symbolism. Now Daryl is in France, and the promo posters tells us that "Hope Is Not Lost".
The bird is an Eastern Bluebird, Sialia Sialis, this is what they look like:
The Inverted Symbolism
About those "underworld" themes I mentioned earlier. Imo the entire show takes place in the liminal space between the Realms of The Dead and The Living. It should come as no surprise that there’s plenty of underworld symbolism happening. Imo both episodes Still and Alone has a particularly eerie quality about them, it was as though the veil between the worlds was particularly thin in those two episode. The infamous episode 10x18 Find Me had the same type of vibe. The borders between the realms were particularly burry.
When Daryl washes ashore on top of an overturned (inverted) boat in 1x1 L'ame Perdue, it suggests that the underworld symbolism is in full swing.
In Slabtown, we saw a painting of St. Peter. As I discuss in this post, the cross of St.Peter is an inverted cross, there's even a famous Carravaggio painting depicting St. Peter crucified on an inverted cross.
In the same post I also discuss the inverted Bottichelli painting "The Birth Of Venus" that we see in WTDCK fro season three, an episode in which @angelthefirst1 so brilliantly broke down the symbolism and how it related to Find Me. I also discuss the Venus symbolism, how it relates to the Sirius symbolism (spoiler: they're synonymous), and how both Venus and Sirius are known as Morningstars.
Daryl used a Morningstar weapon for the first time in TWD 10x11 Morningstar, and he wasted no time "borrowing" a morningstar weapon from the "killer nuns" in TWD.DD 1x1.
See what I did there? TWD 10x11 Morningstar refers to the Sirius/Venus symbolism. It was forshadowed by Daryl's scars, which can be read as roman numerals X II, or 10x11, or like I explained above, 10 "one one".
So he got himself another Morningstar weapon in episode in TWDDD 1x1, or 101, or "one one"...
And because repetition is how we learn: Sirius symbolism (and therfore also Venus symbolism) is about "returns", or "resurrections", if you will. You could also call it "rebirth", like in the case of Venus from the Botticelli painting, Venus, in a sea shell vessel, washes ashore, reborn from the foam of the ocean waves...
Kind of like Daryl….?
Sirius is the star that disappears from the night sky for some time, before it returns before dawn (or like in Beth’s case, where she literally woke up before Dawn Lerner, the police officer in charge at Grady).
The Sirius symbolism is tied into the blue bird and the “101-1x1-one one” symbolism through Rick being the original Sirius character. "Seriously" was among the very first words spoken in the entire TWDU franchise, chronologically speaking. We saw that in a flashback in 1x1 Days Gone By, when we learn the backstory of why Rick ended up in the hospital in the first place. He was the first character to "die", only to "resurrect" and go on to be reunited with his family. That is what the entire show ultimately is all about. "Death", "resurrection" “rebirth” and reunion with loved ones. All of this happened to Rick first, and the symbolism we see around him we also see around other characters that undergo similar arcs, like Beth. And like Daryl.
In my Louvre post from last year I talk about the many parallels to the book and film The Da Vinci Code. In TDVC, the final revelation is that Mary Magdalene's tomb is hidden beneath the inverted pyramid under the glass pyramid outside the Louvre. TD has been discussing the parallels with TDVC for the last seven years, since we saw Daryl study a relief depicting The Last Supper, one of Leonado Da Vinci's masterpieces in season 5. After he had "lost" Beth, but before she "died". And now we're getting spoiler pics like this one:
There's literally an inverted glass pyramid undreneath this one, just saying. It looks like this:
And if that’s not enough, @wdway recently made me aware of something I had completely missed, that Laurent, the Messiah boy tasked with the revival of humanity (no pressure, Laurent), is actually 11 years old…
Next week’s episode will be called Alouette, apparently French for “Lark”… The bird symbolism continues. It’s worth noting that “Lark” was Madison’s “Padre” name. Madison of course is no stranger to the “blue” symbolism, as I’ve explained in my post about the blue clues that I linked to above. She also notably “came back” from the dead, or “resurrected” if you will, after she was thought to have died at the fire at the Diamond Stadium in FTWD. I can think of other characters that's also surrounded by blue birds and diamonds...

Daryl and Beth Share an Emotional Moment in The Walking Dead 4x12
Still" is my favorite Daryl-centric episode of the entire TWD series. His intense eye contact @:20 and the way his voice got real low and sexy when he said "Is that what you think of me?" I was fucking clawing at the walls HELP MEEE 😩💦

Me coming into Walking Dead, knowing that Daryl/Beth is a ship with fans: "Ok, I can get it, these are good character dynamics to smoosh together, idk how much I ship them, but I like the idea."
Me, reaching 4x12: ".....holy fucking shit, dude"
