(Art: 'The Storm on the Sea of Galilee', 1633 by Rembrandt van Rijn)
* * * * *
Danger, when it is always imminent, does harm. It doesn't need to actually arrive. You exhaust yourself in the act of forever looking over your shoulder. Your body readies itself to fight and never quite discharges that chemical cocktail. You channel it instead into anger and self-pity and anxiety and hopelessness. You divert it into work. But really what you do, with every fibre of your being, is watch. You are incessantly, exhaustingly alert. You don't dare ever let up, just in case the danger takes advantage of your inattention. I've forgotten what it feels like to have space in my brain for anything other than watching. For a long time I kept working teaching, pitching articles, writing editorial reports and for a while, that felt like a life raft. But then, incrementally, it became impossible. I was aware of a fog descending, a seizing of the gears, but it seemed diffuse until now.

Do you think classic artists talked about their work like we do today? Like, were people saying "omg Rembrandt you made self-insert fanart? that is so cringe"

Day 25
The Storm on the Sea of Galilee by Rembrandt
The lighting in Rembrandt’a art is impeccable! I may not particularly be a fan of the religious themes, but you can’t deny that he was incredibly talented and that that was the most common theme for art of the time.

snippet from chapter 5 of paper rings
“The worst part about it, I think, is that it was done precisely for money because if it were me, if I was the one doing all of that because I’m not fucking insane and I wouldn’t say no to having the old masters in my house, I’d be a lot more gentle with the paintings, for fuck’s sake.”
James can only stand there and watch as Regulus starts another one of his rants, making James’ heart swell up in his chest from endearment without him even realising it.
“The fucking pricks straight up cut the canvases out of their stretchers. If the heist was carried out by someone who as little as appreciates art, they’d be a lot more gentle with it. They weren’t, which just proves the fact that whoever did it, is nothing but a fucking prick.”
That final sentence does it; James physically can’t stop himself from laughing out loud.
“What?!” Regulus glares at him, clearly offended which makes James laugh even more.
“Nothing, it’s just– the way you talk would make a person think that you have a personal grudge against the thieves from the 90s.”
“I do have a personal grudge against the thieves from the 90s.” Regulus rolls his eyes. “They took The Storm on The Sea of Galilee, the only seascape Rembrandt has ever done in his entire life. They took it for some money and now I will never be able to see it with my own two eyes in person. Ever. Do you know how fucking frustrating that is?”

What do Cobra Kai and Rembrandt have in common? Apparently the writers are fans of fine art heists. Terry Silver has Rembrandt's: Storm on the sea of Galilee in his living-room. The original painting was stolen from the Boston Gardner art museum during St Patrick's day in 1990. It still hasn't been recovered.

Peace! Be Still!
Psalm 89:9. Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise,Thou stillest them. (I have the PC for a while this morning! I didn’t expect to have it, but here goes} One of my all-time favorite stories from the New Testament is this one–Jesus calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee. This was a landlocked sea, situated in a kind of bowl. Such storms result from differences in…
