The Seeds of Death
I feel like this is one of those stories that you could use in a writing class to highlight really skilled elements of the craft.
Like all the classic serials, it's not as action-packed or exciting as modern Who but it was never dull like some of them have been. The pacing and the dramatic tension were excellent, the way they defeated the Ice Warriors was foreshadowed early on but not in an obvious way, and once again I am loving Zoe. She was never once a damsel in distress, whereas the Doctor often was and Jamie was just a himbo until his heroic moment in the last episode
I liked Fewsham's redemption arc, the political tensions between the engineers on Earth, and I also was surprised to realize I enjoyed the Ice Warriors return even though I didn't like them in their first appearance. For some reason, I was under the impression that they were one of the Classic monsters who only showed up in one episode so when it was revealed they were the villains I was genuinely surprised
Honestly, I didn't realize just how much I enjoyed this serial until I started writing it out and I think that has to do with our different expectations of fiction now vs 50 years ago. There were several moments in the story where the engineers would say "this is very dangerous you could die" and the Doctor would be like "well we're dying either way so let me try" and the first time I was annoyed because we obviously know that the Doctor will live.
But then I remembered that they aren't trying to convince us that the Doctor is ACTUALLY in danger, but that within the confines of the story his willingness to put himself in danger is what matters there. And that was prevalent a lot in this serial; all three of the cast as well as many members of the supporting cast had opportunities to show off their willingness to self-sacrifice. And yet, it never felt preachy
