Inktober Day 24
This is from the official daily Inktober 2022 prompt list that I have, once again, repurposed for my own writing uses.
Inktober Day 24: Fairy
It was small – barely the size of Sindri’s palm – all coiled up on the kitchen counter. Pearlescent white scales covered the majority of its body, aside from its delicate wings…or were they fins? It was hard to tell from how the thin membranes lay flush against the creature’s body, head and tail. Three pairs folded tightly over its bulging eyes, while the longest two pairs laid limply along the counter, trembling slightly despite being indoors.
Sindri continued glaring at the tiny creature. Six months…six months of study and patience and effort… and all he had to show for it was a Hovdamned lotlfex. A fey creature so weak it could only be found in the Izzian rivers.
“It’s not going to stop hiding if you keep frowning,” Rin said from the other side of the counter. He poured steaming liquid into four mugs as he considered Sindri.
Sindri, for his part, merely shifted his glare to Rin.
It had the expected effect of raising one dark eyebrow and nothing else. But Sindri felt petulant right then, so petulant he would be.
He gruffly poked the scaly mass. Not even a reptile. Just a fish. An ancestor-exiled fish!
A softly rounded head darted from the mound, flashing surprisingly sharp teeth before burying them in Sindri’s thumb.
“You deserve each other!” Charli cackled while Sindri swore mightily in Field Franstric.
