Two things I loved about The Flame's Daughter*
*that I can remember cuz I watched it 4 yrs ago
classic villain - very hot, very fucked up! Literally his entire role was draping himself over things while holding a wine cup and monologuing. As a villain An Ye Luo was 100/10, but as a character he was so gross absolutely loved watching his ass get beat
the plot literally hinges upon the FL realizing that the guy she's in love with is toxic trash. Everyone around her is like "hey uhh he sucks." And once she realizes that he does, she becomes Sect Leader, marries a bisexual immortal, and saves the world.

What I've been watching lately...
Detective L -- Republican-era crime of the week show. Bai Yu (from Guardian) seems made for the role of louche-but-responsible law enforcement and Qin Xiaoman has enormous Big Himbo Energy for such a small girl. I really enjoy their constant invasion of each other's personal space and the sweet-but-awkward coroner Ben Jieming makes an agreeable corner for an OT3. The cases are decent, though this is less of a fair-play mystery where the clues are available for the audience as, 'the audience follows along as Luo Fei solves cases'.
I'm halfway through, and enjoying myself a lot!
The Flame's Daughter -- it wants to be epic but it isn't quite pulling it off. We have several powerful jianghu sects jockeying for power with a side of court drama (a minor prince studied in one of the sects), as a Very Spooky sect called Dark River stirs the pot in expectation of a very good soup to eat at the end of the day. The female lead is the Young Miss of one of the sects, played by Dilraba Dilmurat and she's lovely -- clearly young, but also v. bright -- and I'm entirely convinced why multiple guys are gone for her, including an immortal who knew her in a former life (I think?) and is hellbent on Making It Weird.
As I said, the female lead is lovely, and she has wonderful chemistry with immortal-guy, but the drama as a whole has the same problem Word of Honour had -- a supporting cast not quite strong enough for the story they're trying to tell. Still. It has some good times, and the action scenes are nice.
The Legend of Xiao Chuo -- this tries to be epic and as of 12 episodes it hella delivers. There's court politics, there's adventure, there's cool horses, there's lots of platonic intimacy (the three sisters of the Xiao family), there's romantic intimacy (a startling amount of skin for a c-drama), there's the interplay of the domestic and the political... Takes place in the Liao Dynasty and there's a social and legal divide between the Khitan who recently conquered the Central Plains and the original inhabitants who still live there. So... our heroine is the equivalent of a Norman princess who falls in love with a Nice Saxon Boy but meanwhile there's a sickly Norman prince who has dreams of unifying the country, improving the economy, and probably building a lot of roads, and is also in love with her. I'm... sure it will all work out? That love triangle is full of nice, well-meaning people. It'll work out, right...?
Anyway, I'm drowning delightedly in the lush scene detail and the various plotlines. A good time!

Danny squints up at the blurry form cradling him, brain trying to catch up with his situation. He can feel the pulse of his siblings’ cores nearby, gently pulsing contentedly despite the chaos of his last memories. His limbs feel too small and pudgy, too-small fingers gripping onto something as his vision started to clear.
There was a man, holding him? Cradling his too-small form like he was an infant- was he an infant? He was pretty sure he wasn’t supposed to be, he had been older but now he wasn’t. My head was pounding. This bed was so warm.
Last night was a blur.
Nyx, how many times do I have to request that you not intrude on my thoughts before 9 am.
“It’s almost noon, cousin.”

Shit, cover for me! Please.
“I told you this was a bad idea.”
Right. I know. Cover for me anyway?
“One hour. Be here in one hour. You owe me.”
Don’t worry, Nyxie. I’ll cover for you the next time you visit the lovely daughter of Spring.
Slamming my mental shields up, I rolled over to the fiery lover next to me with a groan, “Get me out of this autumnal wasteland.”
“Good morning to you too, little one.” the redhead pressed against my backside grumbled.
I rolled over to smack his shoulder. “Gross, Eris. I’m the same age as Aunt Nesta when you proposed to her.”
Eris smirked. “She never called me daddy like you do.”
I let out a mirthful laugh, hoisting myself on top of him, straddling just below his rippled abdomen, “I’m never fucking you again.”
“You say that every time, dear.” Gripping his hands on my hips, groggy voice a whisper, “Yet somehow you keep falling back into my bed.”
Fuck. He was so hot.
I leaned down, pressing my breasts to his bare chest, face just an inch from his. “I can’t help that my shadows love how you beg.”
A growl escaped the back of his throat as my shadows restrained his wrists above his head. My gaze turned icy as I commanded, “Eyes on me, Eris.”
His only response a shift of his hips.
“Don’t fucking move.” I purred.
Nyx could keep the family off my back for a little longer.
