Aug 2021 Wk 1

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Love Area Ep 2 (with subs!) - (episode 1 got fan hard subs too) it’s good, bad boy/good boy pairing (ValenKaitoon) with a bit of a PickRome feel + possible love triangle. I’m enjoying it despite the challenges in finding it. Side dish couple (PeetKing) seems cute too, out gays with lots of early tension (they’re exes with a reunion arc). Tropes included tons of wound tending, drag baby around, fast & bicurious.

Golden Blood Ep 7 - the boys go on dates with girls (GASP), there’s a classic uke collar grab kiss. Also Sky demands a confession. Bossy boy. Pitch is kinda a bad ass. And the climax is very much what one would expect. A solid little show but no longer quite so ground breaking. I’m looking forward to the final ep next week, and I’m pleased it’s not longer.

The Yearbook Ep 4 - CUTE first kiss, cautiously sweet and mutual. This one is still slower than I like but I’m enjoying it more than I was and I’m sticking with it which means it’s mitigating my very limited patience somehow.

Don’t Say No Ep 1 - dropped with hard subs so Frigay is back! It opened with a confession = celebrity coupledom, so already we’re in unusual territory. So far it’s mostly Leo trying to be a good boyfriend and Fiat being a tiny basket case. It’s very seme/uke when what the characters require is hard core D/s and I’m not sure the narrative will go there, still it’s high production values and absorbing so far, not a dumpster fire. This is still a mame offering so don’t expect and actual story, but the acting and casting is on point. JaFirst do not have the physical chemistry necessary for high heat but if they move into D/s (and they already started with that hold against the wall + Leo’s denial of Fiat’s need to take control of the kiss) they won’t need high heat, so in this instance I hope everyone practices some serious restraint. Pun intended. I guess I am accidentally live blogging this one.

Top Secret Together Ep 13 - the engagement scene was adorable and it’s great to see the easy physicality of an IRL couple on screen in a BL. The only acting pairs out of Thailand that really had this before were MewGulf and MaxTul and they’re both high heat. BothNewyear are demonstrating the low heat casual touch of an LTR that normally only Taiwan serves up. It’s great to see on screen and I ended up adding them to my kiss roster as a result. Still, it’s a bit startling that a show with this many couples can still be SO SLOW. I’m watching it on 1.5x speed.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Light On Me (Korea) Ep 11-12 - is not slow, it’s quiet and careful with it’s narrative. It managed to turn in a classic episode 11 in Korean style. TaeKyung continues to be the best communicating uke ever to appear in a BL. I LOVE HIM. But boy do the semes around him not know what to do with that level of honesty. For a very rule-bound BL, TaeKung is breaking all the rules. So I also love this character in this BL, it’s fun to see the main POV go up against the conceits of the narrative around him. Ep 12 finally showed us ShinWoo as a seme, and yeah, we love that for him. Boy is morally sound, willing to communicate, and defined by empathy and integrity. He acts to protect TaeKyung in a way that is so instinctive he surprises himself. THIS IS A GREAT SHOW.

Be Loved in House: I Do (Taiwan) special Ep 13 - some cute moments of domesticity but mostly flashbacks with the ex makes this essentially extra footage that wasn’t used in the main series and largely unnecessary. Cute but missable.

Given (Japan) Ep 3 - ignore all the singing (this is a policy that has served me will in BL for years) and it’s great. It’s also so completely un-subtle. Haruki chugging water because drunk Akihiko hugged him. Mafuyu voicing that little claiming “Uenoyama-kun” when a girl is after his man, and his man being all *meerkat* “yes baby, I belong to you.” Also we got Mafuyu’s backstory, which is the Japanese-style dark version of ShinWoo’s. Uenoyama is the seme and it’s his uke who was hurt so Uenoyama is grappling with warring emotions of jealousy, fear, and a seme’s need to protect. His resulting: "I feel like throwing up” about sums that up.

New Thai BL in August

I know things are pretty sparse right now but we have a few things to look forward to. Thai BL’s Bite Me, Love Advisor the series and Check Out are all supposed to start airing this month. (Keyword: supposed)

Bite Me is slated for August 29 and is a foodie romance that I’ve been looking forward to because I like Mark’s acting and I’m here for Thailand moving outside of university/high school settings. Trailer here.

Check Out will air on 9NAA Channel and the teaser is here. No description as yet. Stars familiar faces from BL who have worked together before, so the actors know what they’re doing.

Love Advisor is about a guy who can predict someone’s future reading tea leaves. He's in love with his bestie, but is stuck as that friend’s love advisor. Seems a bit Cupid Coach-ish but hope springs eternal where the pulps are concerned, so I’m game. It’ll be airing on Vibie Entertainment’s YouTube channel, so you can subscribe for it. Here’s the teaser.

In Case You Missed It

Thailand’s GMMTV got its assets back on YouTube. It’s now there as GMMTV OFFICIAL. There’s some janky stuff gong on with the backbone code though (I know, you’re SHOCKED). So while your playlists might be restored, your subscription might have been dropped.

Call It What You Want season 2 (Thai BL) is airing right now. I never finished season 1 so I’m not chronicling it, but you can find it out there if you like.

Thailand’s pulp Hometown Embrace finished its run. It ended up being:

group of gay boys take down a crime syndicate in poverty stricken local neighborhood meets long form advertisement for questionable herbal supplements and a nationalistic agenda.

Trust me, you could not be more confused than I am and watching it will not clear up that confusion. NOT RECOMMENDED.

Regarding the special rerelease of Taiwan’s We Best Love. Season one is pretty unchanged but they integrated some of the extras and spin-off bits back into season two, and I think this new version of Fighting Mr. 2nd is stronger for it.

Japan released a trailer for Kinou nani tabeta AKA What did you eat yesterday? the movie. No subs, but a kind soul on Tumblr did a translation for us.

ok~ since I don't really have anything to add to your contract post (as always, I agree 100% with what you said) and I don't really like talking about serious stuff (i'm always emo, but for some reason when i say it out loud my sarcastic ass always make it sound like idk about anything even though i'm LEGIT crying when I'm alone in my room or in the bathroom at work god) I was just thinking I could name a couple of random things I just thought about, just to share the love and lift the mood(1/5)

since the break up I couldn’t really listen to their songs without feeling sad so I just didn’t (that was like, what?, 6 months without hearing b1a4), but yesterday I finally had the courage and I’m so happy that I did. before I knew it “because of you” came on and man do I love that song like shinwoo rapping and voice is so on point and everyone sounds so lovely and urghh I was singing along and smiling, and since we are talking about great songs can we talk about the best EP to ever exist(2/5)I’m talking about what’s happening of course, I was going to mention starlight song, but who am I kidding I could talk hours about good love too???? it’s such a good song??? gongchan singing the first lines is pure art. Also I was reading your cnu megapost and you said that you didn’t fall for him right away, and it’s funny cause that’s the mv that did it for me lmao the absurdity of that video, how freaking CUTE they looked, gongchan little curls so adorable, baro and deul being extremely (3/5)funny, jinyoung being awkward ofc and, probably what started my love/want to punch you story with him, that freaking scene with him smiling in prison, like dude seriously? I’M WEAK his perfect little face drives me mad. and lastly, but not least, the long hair styled like that (I really liked those braids i’m sorry lol), the glasses, those playful winks and lip bites.. his beautiful smile idk more than anything else I just found his face really attractive? and while I’ll forever treasure (4/5)and miss those times, I’m ready for new and better things. I guess at the end of the day, I just want shinchandeul to be happy, to remember the past with love like we do but also know that sometimes things don’t go how we plan them and that’s life, we can get mad and cry, but we need to get up again. they will always have our support, i believe in them (that’s it, play road, suddenly i’m an emotional mess again) god this ended up being extra long im so sorry i just got so excited (5/5)

And I literally agree with everything you say here like I’m not even kidding ‘Because of You’ for the longest time was one of my favorite b-sides (I mean it still is one of my faves) and CNU’s rap is so cute and charming in it. Totally underrated everyone should experience how sweet that song is.

And ‘What’s Happening?’ EP?? Literally the best, most cohesive EP they have. It’s always been in my top three albums, sometimes trading places with ‘Good Timing’ album for 2nd place. AND DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON ‘GOOD LOVE’ OH SHIT THOSE TRUMPETS AND SYNTHS GET ME EVERY TIME. Admittedly, I’m partial to ‘How Many Times’ though myself, I think that’s my fave b-side on the EP. I mean ‘Starlight’s Song’ speaks for itself though, literally one of their prettiest tracks. That shit’s just fukin gorgeous and luckily (and unlike ‘Good Love’ and ‘How Many Times’) I feel like ‘Starlight’s Song’ is at least more known and appreciated. Damn that mini was just… gold. I mean ‘What’s Happening’ is and will always be my favorite era so I cannot say a single bad thing about it. There was just so much… good energy and good vibes. So much growth. Ah I gotta stop or I’m going to get emotional now ;;;;

Yeah like while ‘Beautiful Target’ made me fall for them as a group (largely cause of the reasons you listed and lmaoo totally agree about Jinyoung even then with that swarmy smile that was both so handsome yet infuriatingggg) CNU def didn’t grab my attention initially with that MV…. it’s so strange cause you’d think I’d remember the exact moment where it finally clicked and I was like ok I love him he’s my bias but I don’t really… all I know is that it didn’t take too much longer lol by the time 2012 rolled around I was already pretty smitten… *sighs*

Same as far as A3 too… in a perfect world, I just want them to be able to look back fondly on their days as five, as rookies and trainees up until their 7th year anniversary as wonderful times of growth and development, along with friendships that they formed that will never be replaced or forgotten– but in the same vain, I want them to be able to cleanly move forward with no regrets as three, and follow the new paths that they want, knowing that us fans will always be there supporting them~
