august 29, 2018 uncasville, connecticut calum
I don’t know what it is, but there’s something strange about being away from Orion for this long. It’s almost been a month, and we still talk almost every day. I know I can’t expect for things to feel all that normal. I left her alone in LA. She has a life there. I’m busy, touring with the band.
I think days like today are when I feel it the most. We’re in a random ass city in New England. We have a show tonight, but today we aren’t doing press, and there’s not exactly a lot to do in Connecticut. It’s just another day with the boys, whom I love dearly, but don’t exactly have a lot of fresh topics to talk to them about.
At least it felt okay to sleep in this morning. A lot of days it feels like a waste of being in a cool city or a waste of being close to family to sleep in, but in Uncasville, Connecticut, sleeping until 11 feels like an appropriate start to the day.
I wake up to a few texts from Orion, which is unsurprising but always good to see.
From: my love + stars good morning hi hello i couldn’t sleep last night i am zombie today running on hella coffee i think duke misses you he keeps going into your studio and pacing around it’s so sad do you think he can come to the venue in san diego? omg i can get him a little shirt that says “i <3 5sos” can you imagine if i do that you have to post it to your story so the fans can see they would die hope you have so much fun in the fantastic town of uncasville today!!!!
To: my love + stars it’s always a good morning when i can hear from you! very good morning to you my very beautiful girlfriend my favorite zombie you can eat my brains if you want send me duke pics rn i miss him too please bring him!!!! i’m pretty sure dogs are allowed. i will riot if not. yknow you could post it yourself. just make your profile public ya silly goose. the fans love you now.
From: my love + stars cal if you ever don’t hear from me in the morning you need to call the cops i will always say hi asap i will eat your brains first look how cute dukey is!!!!!!! Images attached (3) they occasionally tOleRaTE me NOW. the tables could turn at any time.
To: my love + stars i will never call the cops on you you can do no wrong even if you eat my brains don’t tell duke’s mom but i think i miss my son more than i miss his mom (I AM KIDDING I PROMISE) literally the only reason the tables would turn is if you were a shitty person and you’re the best person i know so you’re good of course only go public if you want but just sayin the world would be a better place if everyone could see your beautiful sunset selfies
From: my love + stars somebody call 911 shawty’s lying to me on the dance flo it’s ok if you miss duke more than me i am not offended i swear you know i won’t go public i just don’t need that chaos in my life i love quietly lurking on stan twitter from my burner account
To: my love + stars i am not lying i miss you more than i have ever missed anyone duke is close second dw it could be a rush to go public for a day and then go back private see what happens
From: my love + stars stop you’re gonna make me cry in the club rn it would be not fun cal you know this i’d get a bunch of DIE BITCH I COULD TAKE UR MAN IF I WANT TO YOU’RE SO UGLY and maybe a sprinkle of wow you’re kinda cool sometimes
I’m not sure how long it’s been that Orion and I are just sitting here texting each other back and forth until Ashton is giggling across the room at me.
“What are you making all those faces for, Cal?” He asks.
I flip him off. “Just texting Orion.”
“Oooh, what are you guys talking about?” Luke walks in the room, a banana in hand and Sierra trailing behind him carrying a Starbucks cup.
I roll my eyes. “Not that it’s any of your business, but I was just telling her she should make her Instagram public, and she thinks it’d just open up a door for death threats.”
“The fans like her now, don’t they?” Luke asks. He plops down on the couch next to me, and Sierra sits on his right side. He looks around the room at all of us, searching for confirmation.
“She always gets love when I post a picture with her in it,” Ashton confirms.
It’s no secret that I’m not exactly an active user on any social media, so even though I have millions of photos of me and Orion, I don’t share them much. That’s both due to my personal social media habits and Orion’s wishes to keep her presence on my social media to a minimum. It’s kind of like her rule for flowers — only for special occasions.
Ashton, on the other hand, posts a few photos at a time to his story and feed pretty regularly, and more often than not, if there’s a group picture, Orion is in it. He’s also the only one that really hangs out with Orion on her own regularly, so naturally they have more photos of the two of them. That said, if she’s only getting positive comments on Ashton’s posts, I’m sure she’d get positive reactions if she shared her own.
“I’m not saying she should or shouldn’t,” Sierra starts. “But I definitely get why she doesn’t want a public profile.”
“I mean, to be fair, a lot of what she posts is of you guys,” Luke adds. He’s not wrong. Because her profile is private and she can pick and choose who follows her, she feels fine to post whatever she wants, and that means posting a lot of pictures with me, of me, and of Duke. “She definitely wouldn’t want to do that if she went public.”
I sigh, knowing that Sierra and Luke are probably right, and Orion is too, even if she’s not completely accurate with what would actually happen if she made her profile public. I decide to drop it.
“Where’s that Starbucks at?” I decide to ask, changing the subject. I nod at Sierra’s coffee cup in her hand.
With the address in hand, I head off to find someone to drive me to the Starbucks and go back to texting Orion.
To: my love + stars it’s pretty early to be in the club but still don’t cry just a little over a month. we’ve got this!! only go public if you want. i support you regardless and happy to be bad cop and defend you in your comments if you needed
From: my love + stars a 2018 shakespearean level romance defending me in an IG comment section i’m a lucky girl

Take My Hand World Tour.
July 8, 2022 - Uncasville, CT
July 9, 2022 - Boston, MA
Tumblr media
You are my getaway, you are my favorite place.
Nine hundred thirty six days. This is the amount of days I spent without seeing my favorite band.
Today is July 11th, 2022. It has been two days after being reunited with 5 Seconds of Summer for two nights. I’m honestly having a difficult time trying to put the words together but I am definitely going to try.
I had first day of school nerves on Thursday night, preparing my outfit for the following day. I woke up before my alarm on Friday morning which could have been due to my excitement for what was to come. It definitely was. For months, I spent so much time driving myself crazy over how good I wanted to look and feel for these shows. I would be awake into all hours in the morning trying to put together outfit ideas and have a desire to get back to the gym so I could look good in my clothes. I became obsessed and I think it was due to the pandemic stalling out these shows and my creative juices flowing. Friday morning, I felt none of that pressure I had put on myself. I was more than pleased with the look I had put together and felt even better wearing it.
My friend Heather and I got to Mohegan Sun close to the show starting. I have many memories with 5SOS inside Mohegan Sun so I was sure seeing the signs and walking through the casino in my sparkly blue boots the emotions would start to overwhelm me, but they hadn’t just yet. I told the staff member at the door I wanted to take a picture of him finally scanning my ticket because of how long I had waited for this day. He chuckled and could tell how eager I was to get inside. I received so many compliments on the 5SOS5 themed denim jeans that I hand painted walking to our seats. I’ll admit that I simply could not breathe initially putting the pants on but I knew dancing around the entire show would surely break them in. The opening band Pale Waves played a half hour set to get everyone excited, but it wasn’t until they were off stage where the butterflies really kicked in. The informercials 5SOS filmed for their anniversary show played every so often to keep us entertained while we waited for the band to take the stage. Around 8:50, the song “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?” played at max volume and I could sense the pre show playlist was coming to an end. There is no other feeling that compares to when the arena gets dark before the band walks out on stage. A wave of emotion hit me the minute this happened and a spotlight beamed down onto the stage. The music intensified and the single light turned into a cone and inside of it appeared the four boys I had waited 936 days to once again be reunited with. The beginning chords of “No Shame” began and at this point, my hands are full on shaking trying to capture everything on camera. I went into this tour purposely avoiding everything I possibly could. I had no clue what the stage looked like or what songs would be played. In that moment, screaming along to “No Shame,” it felt like my very first time seeing 5SOS. I was home.
As expected, the setlist didn’t disappoint. It never does. I was genuinely surprised to hear “Who Do You Love?,” “Disconnected,” and “Castaway.” My favorite parts of the set were the “Easier” to “More” transition *chefs kiss*, Ashton soloing which lead into “Red Desert”, and at the number one spot, everything about “2011.” I surprisingly didn’t cry when the band appeared on stage and even several songs into their set. But before the band performed 2011, a TV montage rewinding through their talk show appearances and music videos over the years absolutely wrecked me. The minute the opening guitar in the song began, I was in tears. The anniversary show is my safe space and getting to hear them perform such a meaningful song highlighting the band and fans’ relationship, there was no way I’d get out of there without crying. The first note of “She Looks So Perfect” will always get me as well. It is a song I always skip on shuffle but seeing it live, I will sing like it is my favorite song. A very important side note that is worth mentioning is that fans who sing the live versions are my kind of people. It is downright impossible for me not to hear the ad libs and note changes from live versions of certain songs when seeing 5SOS perform. For example, the “why can’t we choose them?” and “my heart” during More.
All of the new 5SOS5 songs sounded amazing live and the final song “Youngblood” had the prettiest visuals. By the final bow, I was about ready to rip my sparkly boots off and which I shamelessly did walking around the casino barefoot. Leaving the show, I felt a hundred different emotions. I felt content that I had really cherished my time, living in the moment. My voice and body were tired from screaming along to all of the words and dancing along to every song. My ears were ringing and my feet were spent but my heart felt so fulfilled. All the time spent waiting was so worth it. And even better, we got to do it all over again the next day. We arrived back at Heather’s place and all I wanted to do was look back through my videos and relive everything all over again. Laying on her couch while Degrassi played in the background, I plugged my AirPods in and just cried watching all of my videos. My adrenaline was so high and it felt impossible to sleep, all I wanted to do was keep reliving the night I had over and over. I didn’t fall asleep until 4 AM.
The following day, Heather and I left her place around noon in order to get to Boston for our soundcheck check in. The weather in Boston could not have been more perfect once we arrived. We checked in at the VIP Nation booth where we were given our laminates and soundcheck lineup numbers. I could feel the stares as we walked to find the end of the line, everyone admiring my pants that I decided to wear for day two as well. We were organized by our soundcheck numbers and placed right next to the water which made me really take in and cherish what a beautiful day it truly was. I had a few girls verbally tell me they loved my pants and even had all of the girls from 5SOS’ team compliment them as well. It will always feel different the way my stomach lights up when I talk about my history and dedication to 5SOS. You can imagine my excitement when a member of their team running soundcheck asked if she could take a picture of my jeans and the cherry on top was the girls in line behind me making sure she saw the back pockets as well. After about two and a half hours baking in the Sun, we were finally allowed into the arena to begin the soundcheck experience. My last soundcheck was in 2018 for the Meet You There tour and although I’ve done it for every 5SOS North American headliner, I still got nervous waiting in anticipation as if it was my first time. There were a few girls complaining about how long the band kept us waiting but after experiencing a pandemic and not getting this experience for two and a half years, I wish people would have been a little more grateful. Once they walked out, I immediately gawked over Ashton who was sporting the brown 5SOS trucker hat paired with an oversized black and white print shirt and brown pants. Don’t get me wrong I am a Michael girl through and through, but Ashton on this day deserves an honorary mention. I pushed the brim of my glasses closer to my eyes just to get a good look at them and take it all in. To this day, I can’t believe they’re real.
I love the soundcheck experience because it feels as if you are just hanging out with your really talented friends. These four guys who you’ve watched grow up before your eyes. They performed “Valentine” and again I will mention my fellow live version lovers in the audience saying “Boston, let’s fucking dance” before Calum began singing and “so fucking deep” during Michael’s verse. They answered a few really good questions including ones about their fashion evolution (I’m looking at you, Luke Hemmings) and making them pronounce different Massachusetts cities. They were also asked which one of their songs would they go back and make a music video for if they could. Ashton mentioned Beside You and said they were probably ten years late at this point haha. They grabbed their instruments to play another song and gave us the option to choose between “Long Way Home,” “Babylon,” and “Vapor.” I personally wanted to hear Babylon but was happy we got Vapor. It sounded amazing in the year 2022. Goosebumps galore, let me just say. After soundcheck, we braved the food and merch lines in order to get what we needed before finding our seats for the show. The chicken tenders with fries Heather got me hit so different while waiting in line for merch. After seeing Ashton in soundcheck I really wanted to add the brown trucker hat to my list of merchandise to buy but unfortunately all of the stands were sold out. I had no regrets charging $269 to my credit card and happily walking away to find our seats. We got to our seats in section 2 and I almost threw up from how close we were. The red bull I had just chugged could’ve contributed to that. I have seen 5SOS in all areas of the arena, up high and down below. But the shows where I get closer and closer always feel so surreal. My energy is the same no matter where I’m sitting and that’s all that really matters. Seeing the boys appear underneath the spotlight cone sent shockwaves all over me seeing it up close. They absolutely nailed the opening to this tour. I tried not to spend too much time focusing on the fact that with every passing song, soon my final night of seeing 5SOS would be over. Calum always make this speech before “Amnesia” addressing the fans who have been with the band since the start. Amnesia is another song that I always skip on shuffle but hearing it live always makes me emotional and nostalgic. I had to leave the sparkly boots at home for night two because there was no way my feet would be able to dance the night away in them for a second night in a row. I decided to wear my sandals which I literally never do but I still danced and jumped the night away in them. I want to give a special shout out to the girl to my left who gave her absolute all into the entire show. Her energy made my night that much better. I will always love knowing there are so many people out there who love this band as much as I do. As the band began playing “Youngblood” I tried not to focus on how the night would soon be coming to an end. Instead I belted every lyric and jumped and danced the entire song, giving it my all one last time.
Although I am saddened that I wasn’t able to experience as many dates of this tour as I originally was supposed to, I can wholeheartedly admit that walking out of the Leader Bank Pavillion that night, I felt so fulfilled and my heart was full of joy. It wasn’t until I was in my room sitting in silence after the show, when this wave of emotion hit me. I was so eager to begin putting together my frame commemorating the last two days to add to my 5SOS wall. The year is 2022 and by the end of the year I’ll have been a fan of this band for nine years. And even after almost nine years, I will never be able to properly explain what makes things so different with them. The feeling has always been the same, the spark is so prominent and so bright. There are bands that make me happy and then there is 5SOS.
