It’s my birthday!! Weirdly enough, I actually look forward to birthdays. In my head, I usually break up my life in chapters so a birthday to me is a definitive close of one chapter and the open of another. This birthday, however, feels particularly odd as anyone with a birthday right now can relate to. On the blog today, I wanted to write about and reflect on some of the things I saw, did, listened to, etc. during this year of my life!
Five Places I’ve Visited
New York City, NY
To be fair, this isn’t exactly a peculiar location that I visited! If you know me, I love to go to New York A LOT. While I was 18, I went exactly nine times mostly just for day trips to see shows. It honestly kind of kills me that I can’t go into the city to see a show on my birthday, but my bank account is very thankful!
San Luis Obispo, CA
This is a weird fun fact you may not know about me: I’m originally from California! However, I moved from California when I was ten. This past summer, I went to California to visit some of my family and friends with my boyfriend. I met my cousins half way in San Luis Obispo, and I actually had so much fun! I’ve never really been a beach gal, but it was really relaxing and fun to reconnect with my cousins. It was only a weekend trip, but I wanted to include it on here!
Boston, MA
I actually live here now! As you probably know by now, I am a freshman at Emerson College for Writing, Literature, and Publishing. However, prior to moving there, I had only been to Boston twice. So, it’s been such a joy being able to explore Boston in my first two semesters at Emerson. I can genuinely say I’ve grown so much while living there, and I can’t wait to return in the fall.
Washington D.C.
One of the highlights of my year was attending ALA last summer in Washington D.C. with my mom! I am close enough to D.C., so we drove two hours into the city every day of the conference. In total, I believe we drove 12 hours total. It was honestly worth it, and my mom and I had the absolute best time. I finally got to meet Cat (bottom left picture!) after I’ve been pen pals with her for a couple years. I absolutely love D.C., and I can’t wait to eventually go back.
Five Albums I’ve Listened to
Jagged Little Pill
Octet
High As Hope
Rumours
Youth Is Wasted
Five Accomplishments I’m Proud Of
Emerson Review: One of the things that intimated me most (and still intimidates me) about Emerson is the amount of opportunities available with all the different organizations on campus. In the first semester, I applied to be a reader for the oldest and only international literary magazine on campus called Emerson Review. Honestly, I have a lot of growing to do, especially when it comes to voicing my opinions in front of others, but I can feel myself improving slowly. We just finished our 49th volume, and I am beyond thrilled to have been a part of it.
Work-Study Job: I assume this is not just an Emerson thing, but trying to find a work-study job is HARD. In the fall, I applied to almost seventeen different work-study jobs until I finally got a box office representative position on campus. Little did I know how much this job would mean to me now. It’s taught me so much just in the six months I’ve been there, even just with de-escalation and how to talk to customers. It’s also given me a massive support system with my co-workers and managers, and I’m really happy to be there.
Growth of Curlyhairbibliophile: I must admit: I have not been the best blogger in the past year. I have admittedly forgotten about this blog the minute I get somewhat busy, and I honestly really regret that. However, just within the past month and a half since I’ve been home due to COVID-19, I am so proud of the content I have been able to produce. In fact, it brings me so much joy to express my love of books again on this platform. I don’t like to focus on number counts too much, but I am so close to 600 followers on here which is CRAZY considering how this blog has changed over the past four years! I’m so eternally grateful for all the love and support I’ve received, and I can’t wait to continue this platform as I turn 19 and beyond!
Living On My Own: I’ve always been a pretty independent person. However, moving six hours away from home for the first time is a pretty big test to your independence. I am honestly quite proud of myself for being able to pick up prescriptions, manage classes and work, go grocery shopping, figuring out how to use public transportation, do dishes, etc. It’s a small accomplishment, but I’m going to give myself a pat on the back for this one.
First Internship: If you follow me on Twitter, you may know this already but I landed my first publishing internship this spring! I am a remote editorial intern for Jolly Fish Press/Flux Books. I’m quite grateful for this opportunity, especially since I just finished my freshman year just a few days ago. I’ve been doing it for about a month now, and it’s been so much fun to get a first hand perspective on different aspects in publishing.
Five Shows I Saw (Once or Twice…Or Five Times)
Moby Dick: I saw Moby Dick at American Reparatory Theatre this previous December. It was such a cool and innovative production, and if it ever comes back I HIGHLY recommend you see it. Rating: ⭑⭑⭑⭑/⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑
Jagged Little Pill: I saw Jagged Little Pill just a few months ago with my roommate in NYC. I can’t talk about this one enough! It’s such an important story, and I’m grateful to have seen this before the world shut down. ⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑/⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑
The Purists: I saw this show this past December in Boston with Huntington Theatre Company! It was actually a play directed by Billy Porter, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! ⭑⭑⭑⭑/⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑
West Side Story: I saw the recent revival of West Side Story this past December because one of my favorite Broadway actors was in it. However, the night we saw it he was out injured. Overall, the production was not good. I could write a full post about this show. Additionally, one of the cast members was fired from the New York Ballet for sexual misconduct, yet he was still cast in this production. ⭑/⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑
Oklahoma!: I saw this revival of Oklahoma! on Broadway a few times this fall, and that definitely was not enough! It made me fall in love with this show I once thought was outdated and crusty. It’s going on tour this fall, and if it’s making a stop near you I HIGHLY recommend you check it out. ⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑/⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑.
Five Books I’ve Read
Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky: I am aware that I am probably the LAST person on Earth to read this book. However, I figured this time would be the best to go back and read some of the books I may have missed throughout the years. I can genuinely see why this book introduced so many people to Young Adult novels, and I’m glad I finally read it.
Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston: THIS BOOK! If you have not heard about this book, I am honestly shocked because it has infiltrated my life both online and in real life. I absolutely devoured it, and I can’t recommend it enough.
Full Disclosure by Camryn Garrett: I actually picked up an ARC of this book at ALA, and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. However, I can’t express how phenomenal this book was. I even read it at the register while I was working at Michaels and got in trouble with my manager (oops). Regardless, another book I can’t recommend enough.
Becoming by Michelle Obama: Does this one really need an explanation? Even if you aren’t a non-fiction reader, I highly recommend picking up this book. I would even go as far as saying Becoming was my favorite book of 2019. Yes, it is that good.
The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo: I first bought The Poet X a few years ago on a whim, and I finally decided to read it last year. BOY, I AM SO GLAD I DID. Elizabeth Acevedo has immediately become an auto-buy author for me, and I can’t get enough of her books.
Phew! Sorry for this long post! I’m really grateful for the year I have had, and all I have been able to see, experience, listen to, and read. Now, I am going to scarf down some cake and spend some time with my family. Obviously, I am not expecting anything but I wanted to include my Amazon wishlist here. However, I really don’t need anything. If you did want to do something for my birthday, the organization The Actor’s Fund does some really great work for artists and performers, especially right now due to COVID-19. It would mean a lot if you had a dollar or two to donate. Here is the link to donate.
Thank you so much for all of your support, whether you’re new to my blog or have been with me since the beginning. I am always so encouraged by the passion and activism I see within the book community, and I love you all so much.
Hope you are all doing okay! Thank you for making it so far into this post. Have you had to celebrate your birthday while stuck inside? What has been your favorite moment of your year so far? Do you enjoy your birthdays or do you dread them?
Happy COVID-19th Birthday to Me! A Reflection On My 18th Year of Life It's my birthday!! Weirdly enough, I actually look forward to birthdays. In my head, I usually break up my life in chapters so a birthday to me is a definitive close of one chapter and the open of another.

The district was created when dealers moved north from an earlier district near Canal Street and the Bowery that was created in the 1920s, and from a second district located in the Financial District, near the intersection of Fulton and Nassau Streets, which started in 1931, and also at Maiden Lane, which had existed since the 18th century. A notable, long-time anomaly of the district was the famous Gotham Book Mart, a bookstore, which was located at 41 West 47th Street from 1946 to 2004.
The move uptown started in 1941. The district grew in importance when Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands and Belgium, forcing thousands of Orthodox Jews in the diamond business to flee Amsterdam and Antwerp and settle in New York City. Most of them remained after World War II, and remain a dominant influence in the Diamond District.[3] Another factor in the northward move was the co-location of finance and insurance companies who moved into the downtown districts, causing rents to drastically increase.[4] By 1941, the Diamond Dealers Club—an exclusive club that acts as a de facto diamond exchange and has its own synagogue—officially made the move up to midtown as well.[5]
The area is one of the primary centers of the global diamond industry,[citation needed] as well as the premier center for jewelry shopping in the city. It is one of the largest diamond and jewelry districts in the United States, along with Jewelers' Row, Philadelphia and Los Angeles's Jewelry District, and it is the second oldest surviving jewelry district in the United States after Jewelers' Row in Philadelphia. Total receipts for the value of a single day's trade on the block average $400 million.[6] An estimated 90% of diamonds in the United States enter through New York. There are 2,600 independent businesses located in the district, nearly all of them dealing in diamonds or jewelry. Most are located in booths at one of the 25 "exchanges" in the district, and in a public corridor to 46th Street. Commission based hawkers are also a common sight and they usually solicit business for stores located on the street level.[7]
Many deals are finalized by a simple, traditional blessing (mazel und brucha, which means "luck and blessing") and handshake.[3][8] Retailers with shops line the streets outside. At 50 West 47th Street is the Gemological Institute of America which trains gem dealers.[9] One distinguishing figure of the district is the diamond-motif street lights illuminating the corners.[10] The NYC Diamond District also holds three prominent trade interconnected buildings: the 580 Fifth Avenue Exchange, the DDC, Diamond Dealers Club, and the International Gem Tower. It is also steps from other landmarks such as Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall. " **How to get to the world-famous Diamond District: "The New York City Subway's 47th–50th Streets – Rockefeller Center station on the IND Sixth Avenue Line offers service on the B, D, F, , and M services. An underground concourse connects the station with the buildings of Rockefeller Center. The 49th Street station on the BMT Broadway Line offers service on the N, Q, R, and W trains, and is accessible via a part-time booth at Seventh Avenue and 47th Street at the south end of the station.
Now we go over to 34th & Ninth Ave. to the B&H Photo Video Pro Audio Store and visit my friend Chris in the Used Cameras Department - Chris checked out my old 55mm lens and figured out it had a problem, he hooked me up with a real nice reasonably priced 50mm 1.8 Nikkor lens for my Nikon F-3camera - I shot this photograph of Chris with the lens and Kokak Portrait film - looking real good Chris! - Jon Hammond #BHPhoto#KodakFilm#NikonF3#Portrait

Scallop Fried Rice
“Literally days before quarantine hit New York City, the Tribeca tasting menu Atera restaurant opened a wine bar next door, serving small plates. They’ve stuck it out through the pandemic (while Atera is closed), and have a great outdoor dining situation with tables scattered down Worth Street. The small plates are all pretty excellent, but the scallop rice with egg yolk and trout roe stood out as a highlight. From a service perspective, it’s not surprising that this place is connected to a fine dining establishment, so we’d recommend checking it out for a special night out, outdoors.”

Gambas a la Plancha
“The grilled tiger shrimp at this French-Senegalese spot in Crown Heights look like delicious, albeit normal-sized shrimp, but each one makes you feel like you’re at the tail-end of a peel n’ eat free-for-all. They’re dense and tender, lightly charred and buttery, and somehow, they may not even be the most memorable part of the dish. Underneath them lies a soft pita that you only really notice after finishing half of the shrimp, by which time it’s sopping with lemon juice, spices, and a whole lot of butter sauce.”

 Hannah Albertine Casa Enrique $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  Long Island City ,  Queens $$$$ 5-48 49th Ave.
Chile en Nogada
“Casa Enrique’s chile en nogada is as delicious as it is stunning. Their version is fruit heavy, and filled with enough pears, apples, peaches, apricots, and raisins to convince your stomach you drank a smoothie, and the handful of salty ground pork inside the poblano helps to subdue the overall sweetness. While this is technically a special, you’ll often see it on the menu. Keep an eye out for this pomegranate-studded, cream-covered pepper like you’re scanning a park for an isolated bench.”

Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Wings
“I ate these wings sitting next to a raging fire pit in the alley behind this new Bed-Stuy spot. Between the smoky campfire smell, the slow-burn heat of the wings, and the fact that my friend cried out after hot cheeto dust got in his eye, I briefly forgot I was still in 2020. What I’m saying is, these fried, cayenne-forward wings are a little bit ridiculous and a little bit painful, and they might be exactly what you need to feel better tonight.”
-Hannah Albertine, Staff Writer
Rahi $ $ $ $ Indian  in  West Village $$$$ 60 Greenwich Ave
Methi Gosht
“I went to this West Village Indian spot while researching The Best Fried Chicken Sandwiches In NYC, and their garam masala-coated version certainly didn’t disappoint. But for how much I still think about that sandwich, I spend just as much time reminiscing about the bone-in goat curry. Cutting a hole in the puffed naan shell releases steam that makes it seem like the kitchen’s entire spice rack is being run through a still. The basmati rice acts like a sponge soaking up all of the flavor from the juices and minced goat, and yet the best bites are the pieces of gamey meat attached to the bones at the bottom of the pot.”
-Matt Tervooren, Staff Writer
Jalsa - Grill And Gravy $$$$ 964 Coney Island Ave
Chicken Dum Biryani
“Biryani is my weighted blanket, my 15-minute yoga flow, and my chill music mix all in one. So when I got a craving for it last weekend, I figured I’d go out of my way to find the best biryani on the planet (read: within my delivery radius). Thankfully, the chicken dum biryani I ordered from Jalsa in Ditmas Park had exactly the kind of balanced-but-bold flavor I needed. It’s a big portion with a few whole chicken legs inside, and all of the meat falls right off the bone. The rice tasted like saffron which was extremely satisfying and also reminded me of an old roommate whose IG handle was ‘saffrongirl69.’ I hope she’s gotten better about doing the dishes.”
-Nikko Duren, Editorial Assistant
 Matt Tervooren Diner $ $ $ $ American  in  Williamsburg $$$$ 85 Broadway
Fried Chicken Sandwich
“I’m working on a guide to the best fried chicken sandwiches in NYC, and without giving too much away, I can share three takeaways from my research thus far. First, I’m currently more chicken than Foghorn Leghorn. Second, white meat - why? And third, Diner will make the guide. What separates the version at this Williamsburg American spot from most of the others I’ve tried recently is the meat itself. It’s so tender that if it weren’t for the thin layer of crispy skin, it’d be nearly impossible to tell where the juicy, buttery meat ends, and the soft, buttery potato bun begins. Just know that it’s only offered at lunch Friday through Sunday.”
-Matt Tervooren, Staff Writer
 Hannah Albertine Joe & Pat's $$$$ 168 1st Ave
Clam Pizza
“My mother always taught me to think that molluscs and cheese don’t belong together. But the cracker-thin clam pie from Joe & Pat’s is proof that food rules are mostly stupid, because the cheese, garlic, parsley, and briny clams on this pizza should start an LLC together. Make this your next Friday night takeout so you can weigh in on my mom’s abrasive seafood-dairy policies.”
-Hannah Albertine, Staff Writer
 Hannah Albertine KM1 $ $ $ $ Latin ,  Caribbean ,  Dominican  in  East Village $$$$ 58 E 1st St
Mofongo de Churrasco
“KM1 is a new Caribbean restaurant right across from those handball courts on Houston Street in the East Village. The menu has a bunch of Dominican dishes, including a plate of perfectly-seasoned strip steak with a crispy pile of plantains and a light tomato sauce. Between the tomato broth bath and the alternating bites of chewy steak and crunchy fried plantains, this mofongo was the highlight of my eating week.”
-Hannah Albertine, Staff Writer
 Winner Winner $ $ $ $ Cafe/Bakery  in  Brooklyn ,  Park Slope $$$$ 367 7th Ave
Rosemary and Grape Focaccia
“If your neighborhood bakery doesn’t serve grape and rosemary focaccia, that’s okay - mine doesn’t either. But recently I was biking around Park Slope, and decided to try a neighborhood bakery that does. At Winner, the aforementioned focaccia loaf was sweet, salty, crispy, and fluffy all at once. I’ll be pretending this spot is my neighborhood bakery from now on.”
-Nikko Duren, Editorial Assistant
 Hannah Albertine Lhasa Tibetan Restaurant $ $ $ $ Tibetan  in  East Village $$$$ 177 1st Ave
Non-Veg Momo Combo
“One of Lhasa’s momos may have exploded beef juice all over my laptop, and that’s OK. It’s a good thing that they’re stuffed to the brim with meat, onions, ginger, and chives. This Jackson Heights Tibetan restaurant just opened a new location on 11th and 1st Avenue, and I plan on slowly but surely breaking the keyboard of my computer with their momo broth.”
- Hannah Albertine, Staff Writer
 Black Crescent $ $ $ $ Lower East Side $$$$ 76 Clinton St
Oysters
“Admittedly, oysters don’t have to try very hard to make me happy. But there was something special about these particular East Coast oysters from the recently-reopened Black Crescent. Maybe it was the fact that they were briny-tasting and smooth, or that they were the first oysters I’ve had all summer, or that I had already consumed a margarita in a plastic cup. Whatever it was, I was overjoyed.”
- Hannah Albertine, Staff Writer
La Isla Cuchifritos $ $ $ $ Latin  in  Brooklyn ,  Bushwick $$$$ 1439 Myrtle Ave.
Alcapurria
“If I could have any superpower, my ninth or tenth pick would be to have an unlimited number of the dense, crispy alcapurrias from La Isla Cuchifritos in Bushwick. People would say things like, ‘That seems like a waste of a superpower,’ and I’d just be like, ‘Do want an alcapurria or not?’ And they’d probably say yes. I know this because I ate a few recently, and this is how any reasonable person should respond.”
- Bryan Kim, Senior Staff Writer
Matt Tervooren Viking Fresh Off The Hook $$$$ 1905 Bayview Ave
Fried Oysters & Raw Tuna
“I’d enjoy fried oysters anywhere. Most recently, I had a bucket of them next to the dock on Long Beach Island. Like lots of spots on LBI, Viking Fresh Off The Hook serves fantastic seafood, both fried and raw - like locally caught tuna, which I had in a poke bowl alongside the oysters.”
- Matt Tervooren, Staff Writer
Hannah Albertine A Farm Stand Off Of Route 28 In The Catskills $$$$ Route 28
Satsuma Plums
“I was in the Catskills recently and stopped at a farm stand on Route 28 near Arkville to buy a box of satsuma plums. They’re so juicy that biting into one tends to cause a stone fruit Sweeney Todd situation. I had to eat them over a sink. Now I will live my life knowing plums can be categorized in one of two ways: over-the-sink fruit or non-over-the-sink fruit.”
- Hannah Albertine, Staff Writer
 Nikko Duren Telly's Taverna $ $ $ $ Greek  in  Astoria ,  Queens $$$$ 2813 23rd Ave
Spanakopita
“Rediscovering the NYC ferry has given my bike a chance to relax at home, while I visit parts of the city I haven’t seen in months. Most recently, the ferry brought me and this incredible spanakopita from Telly’s Taverna together, thus solving my commitment issues and inspiring me to go caroling four months early. It’s flakier than your favorite croissant and when you cut into it, you get that beautiful cracking sound that lets you know it just came out of the oven. This spanakopita should be on your NYC meals bucket list.”
- Nikko Duren, Editorial Assistant
 Hannah Albertine Ray's Candy Store $$$$ 113 Avenue A
Swirl Soft Serve With Rainbow Sprinkles
“One of the only, true constants of my summer has been the vanilla-chocolate swirl soft serve from Ray’s Candy Store. I appreciate that it has pastel rainbow sprinkles and that unmistakable dairy flavor that leaves you as thirsty as a camel. Bring a bottle of water and a five-dollar bill, and order one for yourself.”
- Hannah Albertine, Staff Writer
 Nikko Duren A&A Bake and Doubles $ $ $ $ Caribbean  in  Bedford-Stuyvesant ,  Brooklyn $$$$ 481 Nostrand Ave
Doubles
“If you know me, you know that hyperbole isn’t really my thing. So when I say that I think about the doubles from A&A at least once a week, you should take me at my word. I finally made it back the other day (due to the fact that I fixed my bike), and the impeccably-spiced doubles were delicious as always. I also tried their dense, crispy saheena for the first time, although I let my coworker have most of it, as I’m an incredibly giving person.”
- Bryan Kim, Senior Staff Writer
Matt Tervooren Miss Ada $ $ $ $ Mediterranean ,  Middle Eastern  in  Fort Greene $$$$ 184 Dekalb Ave
Chicken Shawarma With Hummus
“If I had to describe my brunch at Miss Ada with two words, I’d go with “disorienting” and “fantastic.” It was disorienting because it didn’t feel like brunch. The whipped ricotta was sweet enough to be served in a dessert shop, the hummus with shawarma had as many bright colors as the food scene in Hook, and the malawach was like a pancake that decided it was born to be more than just a pancake. As for the second descriptor, it all tasted fantastic.”
- Matt Tervooren, Staff Writer
 Hannah Albertine Titan Foods Inc. $ $ $ $ Greek  in  Astoria $$$$ 25-56 31st St
Giant Beans In Tomato Sauce & Egg-Lemon Soup
“I went to this Greek grocery store in Astoria partly because my friend told me Danny Devito likes to shop there, and partly because I have a special place in my heart for imported canned goods. I left with incredible future lunch plans (a perfectly tart egg lemon soup, and a can of giant beans soaked in tomato sauce that didn’t require any additional seasoning) but, unfortunately, no Danny Devito sighting.”
- Hannah Albertine, Staff Writer
Nikko Duren Krupa Grocery $ $ $ $ American  in  Park Slope ,  Windsor Terrace $$$$ 231 Prospect Park West
Nashville Hot Shrimp Burger
“Last weekend, I picked up a Prospect Park Picnic Box from Krupa Grocery and ate it, well, in the park. Admittedly, I was skeptical of the Nashville Hot Shrimp Burger, but the patty was nice and juicy, with satisfying crisp edges. Together with a spattering of creamy chive aioli and heaven-sent pickles, this thing was good enough to make me question whether a “seafood burger” deserves a spot on our Best Burger list next year.”
- Nikko Duren, Editorial Assistant
 Hannah Albertine Soothr $ $ $ $ Thai  in  East Village $$$$ 204 E 13th St
Koong Karee
“This new Thai spot’s shrimp and egg dish is genuinely one of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten out of a plastic container. Its gooey consistency keeps the tail-on shrimp tender and every bite tastes like shrimp paste just called curry powder to say ‘I love you.’ I don’t care where you live, you need to try it.”
- Hannah Albertine, Staff Writer
Hills Kitchen $ $ $ $ West African  in  Brooklyn ,  Bushwick $$$$ 252 Knickerbocker Ave
Efo Soup
“I’ve been ordering a lot from Hills Kitchen, a West African restaurant in Bushwick, and it’s always hard for me to try something new there. You see, I really like their efo soup, which is incredibly rich and packed with more spinach than I typically consume in a month. Order it, get a sticky ball of eba on the side, and consume these things in unison.”
- Bryan Kim, Senior Staff Writer
 Nikko Duren Ricas Pupusas & Mas $ $ $ $ Salvadoran  in  Queens ,  Woodside $$$$ 47-55 47th St
Pupusas
“I don’t eat enough pupusas. And since that’s one void in my life I can actively fill, I ordered two from Ricas Pupusas Y Mas. The masa is thick and sweet, yet humble enough to let the cheesy, meaty insides have some time in the spotlight. Based on this excellent meal (and humility lesson), I’ll be consuming more of these pupusas in the coming weeks.”
- Nikko Duren, Editorial Assistant
 Hannah Albertine Cervo's $ $ $ $ Seafood  in  Lower East Side $$$$ 43 Canal St
Fried Corn
“It’s summertime and I can’t stop saying the word “corn” in an Irish accent - like how I’d imagine Saorsie Ronan would pronounce it. So, I of course jumped at the opportunity to eat the new fried corn dish from Cervo’s. It’s served in a takeout bowl bathtub of bottarga and tomato aioli. You’ll want to dip your corn so that every kernel is drenched in what is essentially salty fish mayo.”
- Hannah Albertine, Staff Writer
Matt Tervooren BK Jani $$$$ 679 Grand St
Jani Burger and Seekh Kebab Roll
“I ordered the burger and seekh kebab roll at BK Jani thinking that I’d bring about half of each home as leftovers. Then one thing led to another, and I was sitting in their lovely backyard with nothing but a bit of mint chutney and a vague sense of accomplishment.”
- Matt Tervooren, Staff Writer
Hannah Albertine The Bun Hut $ $ $ $ Chinese ,  Caribbean ,  Jamaican  in  Lower East Side $$$$ 178 Stanton St
Coconut Curry Chicken Roti
“The roti I tried from this recently-opened Caribbean spot comes with creamy curry, mango salsa, and a few sweet fried plantains - all wrapped up in a thin dhal puri. It was juicy and thick, unlike 90% of my recent carrot-hummus-iced-coffee lunches.”
- Hannah Albertine, Staff Writer
 Noah Devereaux Federoff’s $ $ $ $ Sandwiches  in  Williamsburg $$$$ 178 N 10th St
Cheesesteak Sandwich
“A few days ago, I messaged some coworkers and told them that I was going to order a cheesesteak. They hadn’t asked about my dinner plans, but sometimes I like to be my own hype man. The cheesesteak was from Federoff’s in Williamsburg, it was an intensely salty mess of beef, cheese, and cheese-soaked bread, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.”

18 Seattle Pop-Ups To Know About Right Now
Over the past few months, everything about the Seattle food landscape has changed - that is, unless you used to eat takeout on the couch all the time. With all of the new limitations and uncertainty in dining, restaurants have had to get creative. While many spots have shifted to special takeout menus, others have used this as an opportunity to launch and/or host pop-ups. From smashburgers and malted soft serve to Pakistani soul food, we’ll be keeping track of them here and telling you how to get them. Many of these sell out quickly, so be ready to drop everything and run like your dinner depends on it.

Mixtape is a pop-up that sells fresh pasta at many different Saturday pickup locations - Marseille on Capitol Hill from 10am-4pm, Full Throttle Bottles in Georgetown from 12-7pm, Champion Wine Cellars in Greenwood from 1:30-7pm, and Sound And Fog in West Seattle from 3-5pm. Typically the menu will have a few different types of uncooked fresh pasta infused with ingredients like white wine, chicory, or mushrooms - as well as sauces, compound butters, and vegan options. Pizza Romeo $$$$ 4401 Fremont Ave N
This pizzeria pop-up happens at Vif Wine & Coffee’s parking lot in Fremont on Sundays from 3-7pm. You can choose between four wood-fired pies made from local-grain flour, and they all feature toppings that range from pepperoni and pickled peppers to smoky eggplant and za’atar. Preorders typically become available on Thursdays on Tock, but they sell out quickly.

Brothers & Co. $$$$ 4634 E Marginal Way S
You may have seen this ramen-and-tacos pop-up at the Ballard Farmers Market on Sundays, or maybe you ordered one of their excellent meal kits during quarantine this past spring. They also have been popping up at Fair Aisle Brewing every Friday from 4-8pm, as well as Populuxe Brewing on some Sundays from 2-7pm. The menu skips their usual ramen and tacos and instead features a fried chicken sandwich, a bulgogi-seasoned mushroom melt, poke bowls, french fries, and salads. Juice Club $$$$ 2407 E Union St Suite B
According to Juice Club’s Instagram page, we’re not really supposed to “f*cking tell anybody” about them. We’re doing it anyway because we like them a lot, and it’s our job. Back before the pandemic, this natural wine pop-up set up shop at Dacha Diner and B-Side Foods, and it was where you’d find us on a Saturday night, sipping pet nat, and blowing another friend’s mind by introducing them to their first glass of orange wine. While these parties are a thing of the past right now, Juice Club still has a bunch of bottles on a curated shelf at Union Coffee. This Central District espresso bar is open from 8:30am-4:30pm, but the Juice Club team sells their selections on Tuesday-Saturday from 12-6pm.

Doughbaby $$$$
Yes, this is a pop-up within a pop-up, a.k.a Popupception - which is similar to the Christopher Nolan film, only the food’s doing all the mind-blowing. Doughbaby is yet another pizza operation serving a few pies on naturally-leavened dough, alongside a salad option - and they’ve most recently set up shop at Juice Club, the natural wine pop-up at Union Coffee. Place a preorder by DM-ing Doughbaby on their Instagram.

Lenox $$$$ 6031 Airport Way S
Lenox is also part of the Popupception universe - they’re hosting takeout dinners in collaboration with Cookie’s Country Chicken at Sneaky Tiki in Georgetown. This Caribbean smokehouse specializes in meats like mojo pulled pork, Longaniza hot links, and candied ribs, alongside sides like Cuban black beans, fried plantains, and watermelon salad with cotija. Rough Draft Burger Shop $$$$ 9823 15th Ave SW E.
It’s hard to pass up on a cheesy smashburger chased with a pile of waffle fries, and Rough Draft Burger Shop understands this indisputable fact. This burger joint had roots in Seattle before moving to Portland, but they pop-up every now and then at Good Day Donuts in White Center. You can check out their current whereabouts on Instagram.

Bootleg Barbecue $$$$ 936 NW 49th St
Popping up at breweries like Holy Mountain and Fair Aisle, Bootleg Barbecue is a Texas-style operation that serves smoked meats like brisket, hatch-cheddar sausages, tasso pulled pork, and sides like pimento cheese and old bay potato salad. Exact locations and times vary, but you can stay posted on their Instagram.

Sacka-Burgers $$$$ 129 Winslow Way E
Are burgers a type of sandwich? That’s an argument for another day, even though it should be known that the very first one in America was called a “hamburger sandwich.” Anyway, Hitchcock Deli is a great sandwich shop on Bainbridge Island that can now add burgers to their repertoire with their Sacka-Burgers pop-up. They’re serving smashburgers, fries, battered mushrooms, and malted soft serve from 12-7pm.

Vee Tacos $$$$ 7 Boston St.
Vee Tacos is a vegan Mexican pop-up from the team behind Bounty Kitchen, and you can find these plant-based tacos from 5-8pm at their Denny Triangle location on Saturdays and at the Queen Anne location on Sundays. The tortillas are homemade, and the filling options range from carnitas jackfruit with avocado crema, grilled corn, and pickled onion, blackened chayote squash with chipotle crema, cabbage, radish, and blistered tomato, hearts of palm ceviche with cactus and cucumber, and mushroom al pastor with plenty of pineapple.

Dantini Pizza $ $ $ $ Pizza  in  Capitol Hill $$$$ 601 Bellevue Ave E
It’s hard not to become an instant fan of the Danish pop duo Junior Senior after your first time listening to “Move Your Feet.” Just try to get through a verse without at least tapping a toe. Similarly, it’s pretty impossible not to fall for Dantini after one slice (nay, bite) of pepperoni pie topped with sweet, buttery confit garlic. This pizza pop-up is stationed at Harry’s Fine Foods every Sunday afternoon at 3pm. Pies (choose between cheese, pepperoni garlic, a lemony white pie, a rotating special, and a vegan variety with tofu ricotta) are available for preorders starting every Thursday at 7pm through Dantini’s website - and if you miss the cut, you can still grab a slice at their walk-up window. Occasionally, Dantini will sell pizza on an additional day of the week at another location, so keep an eye on their Instagram.

Blotto $$$$ 219 Broadway E.
Blotto is another choice on Capitol Hill if you’re in the mood for pizza, only these naturally-leavened pies are available on Thursday from 5:30-8pm with preordering happening on Mondays at noon. The toppings change regularly (with a couple of examples being n’duja and kale or corn and smoked mozzarella with lemon cream), but you’ll always see a cheeseless vegan tomato pie, one with cheese and chilies, and sides of ranch you can add on. Pickup is at the Broadway Alley building, inside and through the back.

Moon Pizza $$$$ 3621 Stone Way N Suite D
If you love Sea Wolf, chances are you’ll also love the pizza they bake every Monday that’s known as pop-up “Moon Pizza.” The toppings change each month, but in August they served a margherita with a tangy avocado sauce for dipping as well as a white pie with ricotta, lemon aioli, corn, sesame, fresh herbs, and a lime wedge. Moon Pizza also sells cake slices from Deep Sea Sugar & Salt, which is a very big deal if you’ve ever waited in line at the Georgetown bakery to get some. The one thing to note is that the crust here feels more like eating pizza toppings on a squished-down loaf of sourdough - but this is far from a bad thing as Sea Wolf makes stupendous bread.

Karachi Cowboys $$$$ 936 NW 49th St
This Pakistani soul food pop-up bounces around between venues - they’ve been operating out of B-Side Foods for a few weeks, and most recently set up shop at Fair Isle Brewing in Ballard. Their menu is short and sweet, and you can expect things like curried nut mix, chana masala, aloo sliders with tamarind BBQ sauce, and homemade damiana lemon soda. Stay updated on their Instagram.

Old Scratch $$$$ 1315 E Jefferson St
Located on the sidewalk above a couple of shrubs, Old Scratch is L’Oursin’s casual takeout pop-up. Here you’ll find little Southern sandwiches, from smashburgers and popcorn shrimp to a smoked tofu BBQ sandwich that’s just as meaty as a slab of brisket. They’re also selling Southern pantry items like Bojangles french fry seasoning, Duke’s mayonnaise, and those gloriously mediocre Toast Chee peanut butter crackers. You know, the ones you used to get from vending machines as a last resort only to find out that they expired two-and-a-half years prior.

Cookie's Country Chicken $$$$ 6031 Airport Way S
We’re in the midst of a fried chicken boom in Seattle - dozens of bone-in pieces and tenders seemed to have materialized out of thin air in the past few months. We’re not mad about it. Cookie’s Country Chicken is one spot in particular that’s offering crispy wings, drumsticks, thighs, sandwiches, and even country-fried cauliflower out of Sneaky Tiki, a bar in Georgetown. Cookie’s is available Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11am-9pm, Fridays from 11am-10pm, and Saturdays from 12-10pm.

Three Sacks Full $$$$ 4857 Rainier Ave S
This farm-to-table operation is a pop-up takeout restaurant with pickups happening at La Medusa in Columbia City on Wednesdays and Ebb And Company in Bryant on Thursdays. Their menu includes local seafood/meat entrees and a ton of side dishes featuring seasonal produce that you can mix and match to make your own dinner. If you pick up at La Medusa, you have the option to add bottles of wine, and if you pick up at Ebb And Company, you have the option to add homemade desserts and sourdough boules.

Instead, from Tuesday-Saturday from 4-8pm, the kitchen is operating as an Indian pop-up restaurant called Meesha. They’re serving smashburgers, fries, battered mushrooms, and malted soft serve from 12-7pm.

We’re in the midst of a fried chicken golden age in Seattle - dozens of bone-in pieces and tenders seemed to have materialized out of thin air in the past few months.

Meesha $$$$ 127 N 36th St
Pomerol is a French spot in Fremont, but they’re not serving their own menu right now. Instead, from Tuesday-Saturday from 4-8pm, the kitchen is operating as an Indian pop-up restaurant called Meesha. You can expect dishes like butter chicken, snapper curry, cardamom rice, dal bukhara, and more. Place an online order on their website.

Starting June 5th, Restaurants and taverns in Seattle were officially allowed to reopen in a limited capacity, and we want to provide you with the most up-to-date information we have. For now, we’re simply going to focus on what we know: which places are opening back up and what to expect based on the King County restrictions (we also have a guide to restaurants that have reopened as well). Like you, we’re monitoring the situation day-by-day (more like hour-by-hour), and we’ll continue to update this guide as bars reopen around the city. We also have a running list of all Seattle restaurants that have reopend their dining room, too.
Currently, the vast majority of Seattle bars have not announced that they plan on reopening yet. For our full guide to the city’s takeout and delivery options, check out our guide to alcohol delivery and takeout, where to get pre-mixed cocktails to go, and the Ultimate Seattle Delivery & Takeout Guide.
Have a bar opening to report? Email us at [email protected].
