It’s a secret to absolutely no-one that Amy Santiago is the kind of woman that likes to excel in any skillset. Unapologetic in her badass-ery, she can (and has) chase a perp through the boroughs of Brooklyn in boots that have a higher heel than three of her male colleagues put together. Her finely tuned memory - the same one that has led Trivia Newton John to seven straight victories - helped solve a series of long-dead case files, and her problem solving skills are the reason that one of the city’s biggest kingpins is currently behind bars.
With this in mind, one could consider it safe to say that Amy regretting her natural ability to ace any situation would be up there with hell freezing over, or for a flock of pigs to soar across the sky.
But tonight, here in Shaw’s bar as she watches Jake have what seems to be a lovely date with Sophia; Amy just might be, if only maybe a little, slightly regretting her highly graded observation skills (yes, the same ones that pushed her into the highest percentile when graduating from the academy - which she very rarely brags about, and she really should - it was mentioned in the commissioners speech and everything).
To be fair, it wasn’t all bad. She could, for example; hear the jukebox in the corner, playing Come on Eileen for the fifth time in a row - unknowingly settling into a duet with squelching sneakers as a bunch of drunken frat guys danced, all of them too far gone to notice any repetition. Plus, she could pick up on the subtle click of the acrylic nails on the woman at a neighbouring table, listening to them tap against a series of her friends’ photographs, rotating between descriptions of priddy and gawgeous.
Mixed with the scent of spilled beer and day-old peanuts, it was exactly the combination that to others may appear seedy, but to Amy and the squad, just seemed … familiar. Shaw’s was their watering hole, the basement bar each could disappear into and drink to forget their days, and despite the five empty glasses on her table and the half-full one in her hand, Amy was finding it incredibly difficult to stop noticing just how sweet Jake was with his girlfriend.
Even more impossible was to stop imagining what it would be like if she were the one standing near the dart board, with Jake’s arm resting comfortably over her shoulders.
It had all started earlier today, when she had glanced over at her partner just in time to pick up on the tiny little smile that grew on his face when he noticed a text from Sophia.
(Okay, it’s possible that it had actually started back at The Maple Drip Inn, with that look he’d given her after maybe, yes, a little. It had definitely led to a series of Thoughts after Teddy’s departure, of which she’d only given herself just that night to think about.)
(Except ‘that night’ then turned into that week, and okay fine then it had turned into ‘just that month'; and now here she is, several weeks later; completely unable of getting Jake Peralta off of her mind, and it’s becoming very likely that this is more than just a little crush.)
It had been so endearing to see, that tiny glimpse of joy and enchantment as he’d read Sophia’s message - just fleeting enough for Amy to wonder if anybody had ever reacted to a message from her with such glee. (Teddy, she remembers, preferred not to text; and would instead express his affections by saving her the last bottle of his favourite pilsner, or brewing a new concoction ‘inspired by her’ … sweet, but somehow didn’t hold the same sentiment.)
So she’d kept her eyes glued to the computer screen in front of her as she listened to Jake pick up the phone and order a bunch of flowers to be delivered to Sophia’s office - using his debit card, and not a combination of the five questionably balanced credit cards under his name - which in itself is huge. Pretended not to notice the multiple kiss emojis in his reply, or the soft tune that he hummed for a few minutes after, focusing intensely on the case file in front of her as she described a recent interrogation in finite detail. Kept up the facade of all that stuff with us is in the past as he recounted a romantic weekend to their squad in the break room - laughing along in all the right places, doing her very best to keep the wistfulness out of her eyes.
And all the while, Amy’s mind had kept contemplating if she would ever get to know what it would be like to date someone like Jake: to have somebody who would take all the black and whites of her life and show her the beautiful greys in-between.
So when he’d shown up at Shaw’s this evening, with Sophia’s hand carefully wrapped around his own and a grin that announced his contentment to anyone who cared to look; Amy had felt her heart squeeze painfully in her chest. Her painted smile had just lasted until the couple retreated to the corner for a crazily competitive game of darts, and Amy had decided tonight would be a great opportunity to drown her sorrows in a few glasses of whiskey, doing her absolute best not to notice all the little things she will never have.
Like the way Jake would punctuate each congratulatory high five with a kiss, even when it meant that his girlfriend had beaten him at a game. The gentle way he steered them away from a rambunctious crowd, keeping an eye on the raised voices as his unaware girlfriend played her shot and came so close to hitting the bullseye. Or the way Sophia’s hand would rest on Jake’s chest as he held her in his arms (just the way that Amy wishes she could do), and the way she would laugh so happily as he commented on the drunk guys dancing near them.
It was all very simple, but undeniably sweet, and Amy doesn’t know how she ever doubted that Jake would be anything but.
“Your covert skills need work, Santiago.”
The chair beside Amy scrapes angrily against the worn floorboards and she turns, startled by the interruption, quietly praying that her face isn’t quite as red as it suddenly feels. Terry, far more interested in taking the last sip of his scotch than commenting on her appearance, settles in to his new location next to her, and his glass hits the soaking cardboard coaster with a slap.
“Wha-huh? Covert skills? You really must be drunk, Sarge. We’re not even on a stakeout right now. Unless you’re talking about us staking out the contents of that fridge behind the bar haha!”
(She’s rambling - she knows she’s rambling; but cannot stop the desperate need to pretend that she hadn’t just been completely busted for spending her entire evening staring at a life she may never know.)
“Ugh. Okay fine.” Her mouth stretches out into a cringe, eyes flickering to the colleagues Terry had just walked away from. “How noticeable are we talking here?”
“Noticeable enough that Charles has spent the last 40 minutes lamenting on ‘the beautiful tragedy of unrequited love’”. Dropping his air quotes, Terry rolls his eyes, one eyebrow lowering as he returns to his drink. “He lost me when he started quoting poetry. Terry loves Shakespeare, but he could do with a little less soliloquies - and a little more spirits - tonight.”
“Oh! You know what, there was just a Shakespeare play in Polonsky that starred - ” Terry overlaps her last words with his own heavy voice, and Amy’s stops in it’s tracks.
“Dianne Wiest. Terry knows. That was his segue, Amy.”
She nods, sensing the need to dig up. “Should have known. Charles loves his Wiest feasts.” Terry grunts his assent, pressing his lips together as he savours another verse-less sip, and Amy seizes the opportunity to cast another furtive glance at the happy couple.
“Seriously, though. Just because Peralta hasn’t noticed, doesn’t mean the rest of us haven’t.”
Amy brushes her hair to the side, swirling the liquid in her glass with her free hand. “Okay, so maybe I haven’t been very subtle tonight, or whatever.” Her gaze returns to Jake, drawn to him like a magnet, and her heart squeezes once more.
To his credit, Terry gives her a moment; waiting for a silence to settle over their table before leaning forward in his chair, ignoring the sticky residue of the tabletop as he rests his arms on either side of his glass.
“Out with it, Santiago.”
She shakes her head, swallowing hard to push down the burgeoning lump in her throat. “They look really happy together, don’t they? He looks … happy.”
Terry shrugs, glancing in the direction of Amy’s eye line. “Yeah, I guess so.”
“He does! All shiny and cheerful and just .. happy.”
“I don’t know. Terry remembers a time when you and Teddy looked just as content.” His look is pointed, and followed by the unsubtle raise of his eyebrows. Amy nods, draining the last of her drink. Somehow, she has a feeling that Sophia’s underwear isn’t lined with mesh like Teddy’s had been (and even if it was, it would be some kind of inexplicably sexy mesh, for sure).
“Sometimes things aren’t what they seem, sarge.”
“You know that works both ways, don’t you?”
Nodding again, Amy wipes her thumb along the smudged lipstick print on her glass, choosing to remain silent. Terry didn’t get it - none of them got it, really. She’d had her chance, the very first time the words romantic styles were uttered, and she’d let it slip away. And now, she has to live with the consequences.
Clearing his throat, Terry continues. “I mean … she is a defence attorney, you know.”
“But see, even that isn’t something that I can fault. Not fairly, anyway.” Clocking the look of disbelief on Terry’s face, Amy shrugs defensively, waving her hand vaguely in Sophia’s direction. “I know we all like to joke and call them evil, but really … all they’re doing is making us prove that our findings are beyond reasonable doubt. If anything, it’s people like her that push us to do better - to work harder to make sure that we’re definitely charging the right person. And as annoying as that can be, it’s definitely not a reason to hate her.”
“Kinda sounds like you do, though.”
She shakes her head, feeling the sense of defeat sink into her bones. “I really don’t. She’s incredibly smart, and funny and beautiful … she honestly looks like she should be in a commercial for shampoo or something. She’s perfect for Jake, and I’m just …”
“You’re just … ?”
Shrugging, Amy slots her thumbnail into the edge of the coaster underneath her glass. It, like her heart, had seen better days, and it was time for her to cut her losses. “I’m just … going home.”
“What? No. Stay! Our squad kicked butt this week, Amy. We all deserve a drink.”
Painting another smile onto her face (she really is getting good at them), Amy pushes her seat away from the table, allowing herself one more glimpse at Jake’s smile before shaking her head at Terry. “Sorry sarge, I just can’t seem to celebrate tonight.”
Heading towards the exit without a second thought, Amy doesn’t see Jake pull away from Sophia, taking a half step in the direction of the door as he watches her leave. She doesn��t notice him pull out his phone, start to type a message before hesitating, pocketing it without hitting send. The night moves on as Amy walks away, and the streets are deafeningly silent as soon as the bar door closes behind her.
The sky seems to feel just as morose as Amy this evening, tiny droplets dropping onto her grey work blazer as she waits for a cab; too lost in her thoughts to take in the frivolity of a parting crowd. As the rain increases and the splotches on her blazer turn into tiny Rorschach Tests she decides to give herself one more night - one last night of wishing for things that will never be.
In the backseat on her ride home Amy twists her hands together, linking her fingers and imagining not for the first time that one hand was Jake’s (she would imagine similar .. later). She thinks of what it could be like to have his warm presence near hers .. to have his hand resting on her leg, not out of possession but just to be near. Watching him get out of the car first, only to turn and offer a helping hand for her exit, every time without fail.
She pictures what it would be like to feel the brick exterior of her apartment against her back as Jake presses his soft lips against hers, kissing the life out of her, making her see stars before pulling her into the apartment for so much more.
He wouldn’t always be the perfect partner - and lord knows, neither would she - but Amy knows that through it all he would remain her best friend, because even through all of this yo-yo pattern of denial and admittance, thats who Jake has been for her. After all these years, he’s become the only one she wants to talk to, at any given moment of the day, who knows her coffee order better than his own and remembers her Abuela’s birthday, even when she hasn’t mentioned it in weeks.
The scent of rain lingers in her apartment as Amy readies herself for bed, casting her pantsuit aside with drunken abandonment and giving her face a half-hearted wash before stumbling towards her bed. She closes her eyes, the thoughts of what could have been still so loud in her quiet apartment, hugging the pillow beside her tightly while her mind begins to wander.
As she finally drifts off to sleep that night, Amy tries not to remember the smile that Jake gave her as they danced so long ago at the community hall - that special kind of smile, that made her think that maybe it was solely for her - and tells herself once. and. for. all. that sometimes, life just doesn’t work out the way you’d hope.

It’s a rush of cool air that alerts Amy to a brand new morning, the drop in temperature squashed as quickly as it arrives by the wrapping of a warm arm around her middle. She smiles into the pillow as it completes its protective loop, letting her body get pulled closer to the human hot water bottle in the middle of her bed, and if there was a better way to wake up on a cold day, Amy is yet to see it.
She lets out a sigh of comfort as the bridge of a prominent nose digs into her shoulder blade, feeling the warmth of his breath through her old academy shirt, nestling closer until her legs are well and truly tangled amongst his. It’s late, later than she would normally allow herself to sleep, but the two of them were far too invested in basking in the afterglow of a rainy Saturday filled with sex and movies to consider leaving the bedroom anytime soon.
Jake’s voice is rough, the remnants of a deep sleep obvious in his throat. “Today’s Sunday, right?”
Amy nods, wriggling herself just free enough to turn within her boyfriend’s embrace. His hair is sticking out on all ends - unaided, she is certain, by her hands the night before - and she runs the tip of her thumb along his right cheekbone. Though his eyes are still closed, he leans into her touch, and she grins. “Definitely Sunday. A rainy Sunday, but part of the weekend all the same.”
He nods, the short and prickly fibres of his morning stubble scratching her palm. “Good. More time for time machine building.”
“… we’re building a time machine?”
“Yeah, one that lets us skip past all the boring work stuff, and leaves us with all the time in the world for more of this. Kinda like that movie Click, but a lot less ‘trying to change the past’ stuff, and a lot more sex.”
She chuckles, and his left foot rubs along the side of her calf under the blanket. “You’re crazy, Peralta.” (Although, she will admit - the ‘a lot more sex’ part did sound kinda great.)
His eyelids flutter open, gaze growing soft as a smile stretches across his face. “You’re beautiful, Santiago.”
Amy feels her cheeks begin to heat up, resisting the urge to cool herself down by tucking her hair away, completely unable to move as long as Jake continues to look at her like that. There’s a pimple growing underneath the surface of her chin that is going to rival Mount Vesuvius, and her morning breath could probably wilt the flower pots living happily on her kitchen’s windowsill. But here, in bed with her boyfriend of almost two years, she feels more beautiful than all of her best days put together.
“I don’t think I’ve told you this today, but I love you, Jake.”
Leaning forwards, Jake’s soft lips press against Amy’s, and he winks as he pulls away. “I mean, we’ve both been awake for a sum total of three minutes, so yeah, you’re pretty late with the love you’s today, babe.”
Her free hand flies out from under the cover, delivering an indignant smack to Jake’s chest, and he grabs it back before she can pull away, linking their fingers together and pressing a kiss to her knuckles. “I love you too, Ames. Even if you don’t want to build a time machine with me, I still love you.”
She laughs - a giggle that starts in her belly and bursts through her lungs, something that she’s been doing a lot more of these days - and pulls Jake in for a longer kiss, morning breath be damned.
One day, in eight or so years time, they’ll have a son - a miniature version of Jake that, much like his father, runs to the beat of his own drum; and answers to the name Mac. Amy will fall pregnant again, and when they explain to their son that he’s going to be a big brother, his response is so perfectly him that it makes Amy’s eyes tear up with laughter.
For they are, by Mac’s decree, now officially a Ninja Turtle family. He is Raphael (or ‘Rafel’), Jake Michelangelo due to his love of nunchaku, and Amy nabs Leonardo purely out of homage to one of her favourite artists. The mini-Peralta still growing in her womb is, by default, Donatello (or Donatella, depending), and even though there was a time when Amy truly felt like she could never be this lucky, she will love their little family with all of her heart.
But for now, she has Jake; and together they have warm bedsheets and no plans for a future that isn’t together - no matter what obstacles may be thrown their way.
And Amy realises, as Jake begins to trace a series of kisses along her side of her neck; truly, being loved by him is better than she could have ever imagined.

ok i’m ... only going to talk about my unpopular opinions in regard to kiyoko’s character & her portrayal. i disagree about more things than that, but i’m not trying to overstep my bounds into other people’s portrayals or the way that furudate decided to write hq.
i don’t ship kiyoyachi. i honestly can’t see them as anything more than platonic friends / best friends. kiyoko hasn’t really given any indication of her being interested in dating in the manga, nor has yachi, & their differences in personality & age make me prefer to see them as just friends. more than anything, i think yachi is someone that kiyoko is grateful to have as a friend. furudate has said that kiyoko struggles with her words / communication a lot, which means that kiyoko’s ability to talk to yachi as another girl on an all-boys team, as a senior passing the torch to the future team, & as a simple friend is something she greatly cherishes. he’s also said that he added yachi as a character who “doesn’t overlap with kiyoko-san at all,” further stressing their differences. i think they blend a lot better as friends than they do as partners, & i prefer them to just be platonic.
kiyoko isn’t rude to her own team, or rude period. she’s usually painted out to be cold & reserved, but it’s clear that she cares for her team. some people might be confused because of the distinction between concise speech & rudeness, but i think that kiyoko’s tendency to give short, simple responses sometimes leads to her being perceived as snippy or curt. but she’s been shown joking with her team ( in an off-brand sort of dark / unclear humor that sugawara also shows, sometimes ), high-fiving / patting them with distinct physical contact ( that a rude person might not ), & smiling around them. the only clear instance of her doing something that could be perceived as “rude” is that oikawa’s current concern lists her as having ignored him. but in contrast, she’s been confronted by terushima & whispered about / talked about by multiple other strangers or opposing players, but she never treats them poorly. she politely tries to excuse herself from terushima, or feigns ignorance / looks away from anyone she hears talking about her. most of the time, it’s tanaka & nishinoya who prevent her from coming in direct contact with boys who think she’s cute, so she’s never clearly “shut anyone down” in a rude way.
in that same boat, she doesn’t HATE people who flirt with her. hate is such a strong word & i don’t like to use it to refer to her feelings, but sometimes i’ve seen kiyoko be portrayed as the type of person who coldly, meanly shuts people down when they flirt with her. there’s an extra illustration in which she’s wearing a sarashi ( chest wrap ), & oikawa, kuroo, & bokuto exclaim that they want to help promote the volume so they can see her in it. but she doesn’t shut them down for it -- she crosses her arms, blushes, & makes a sort of pout-like expression ( like she’s not pleased with it, but she can’t stop them ). i don’t know where the notion of her being this aggressive, icy “man-killer” came from, but i think her responses to flirtation are pretty normal. most often, tanaka & nishinoya will stop the advances, but if they don’t, she’ll be polite to excuse herself or she’ll pout & feel embarrassed / exasperated by it. she might also rebuke advances with short, dry answers, but this is usually directed towards people she knows well ( tanaka & nishinoya ), & not strangers who could perceive it as rude if they didn’t know her well.
[ speculation ] kiyoko isn’t rich. karasuno has been painted out to be a rural public high school with medium- to low-acceptance standards. kageyama couldn’t pass the written exams to enter shiratorizawa ( a private school ), & i believe aoba josai has also been confirmed to be a private school. furthermore, the facilities at karasuno point to it being a bit of a hodge-podge school -- the volleyball team doesn’t have a coach & they aren’t given a replacement, & the girls volleyball club has to share a gym with the basketball team. so, although this is just my speculation & not confirmed in any way, kiyoko is probably local & comes from a middle-class family, which would be common in suburban / rural miyagi. her out-of-school clothing in some official art suggests that she lives comfortably & can keep up with some fashion trends ( her teddy-esque type jacket in winter, small backpack at the shrine visit, two confirmed pairs of swimsuits, etc. ), but she’s clearly not loaded with money or from a high-class family.
she’s not a highly intelligent character. she’s in class 3-2, one of the lower level classes ( not a college prep class ). some of her observations in haikyuu-bu ( though it’s technically a comedic spin-off ) suggest that she’s not highly intelligent in the way some other characters are. furudate also comments on her in the haikyuu guidebook, “i created her with the image of a ‘capable secretary’ in mind who does her work in a matter-of-fact manner. but that doesn’t mean she’s cool, in fact i draw her as being not very good with words.” i interpret this choice of wording of “cool” as also inclusive of “intelligent / clever.” i don’t think she’s unintelligent. i wrote a headcanon based on gardner’s multiple intelligences theory to explain that she’s more skilled in certain intelligences, & i plan on writing another headcanon about her intelligence later, but at least in terms of traditional book smarts, she’s not considered intelligent.
she’s not useless. this is an opinion i unfortunately see / hear a lot, & i think it’s rooted in the fact that kiyoko is a minor character, often seen as a block to certain ships, & because karasuno has two managers instead of one. i want to stress that because haikyuu is a sports manga, the majority of the on-page action is in volleyball matches, not the behind-the-scenes work of the managers. kiyoko is a minor character & accordingly doesn’t get much development or time on the page. but what we learn from hints in the manga is that she has essentially taught herself the rules of volleyball with minimal assistance from a senior manager ( since she was recruited in her first year & there was no manager there at the time ), that she is responsible for cooking, washing jerseys, & doing dishes ( from the ‘what if shimizu-san wasn’t the manager’ extra chapter ). sawamura also at one point remarks that she’s “got a lot of work on her hands” before the team plays at the interhigh tournament, which means that even the team captain recognizes her responsibilities & worth on the team.
9/10 dentists characters have called her pretty. at one point i actually tried to make a list of all the characters who have in some way commented on her appearance or acted strangely around her because she was pretty. off the top of my head, i can list : hinata, yachi, tanaka, nishinoya, sawamura, sugawara, azumane, yahaba, kindaichi, oikawa, yamamoto, lev ( ? ), kuroo, bokuto, terushima, & bobata. unfortunately, furudate’s earlier art doesn’t do her beauty much justice in my opinion ( which is why i think this tends to be downplayed sometimes ), but she clearly has some testimonials to her appearance.
she’s probably not close with any of the team outside of practice. during their new years shrine visit, the third years remark that it’s the first time they’ve ever all been to a shrine together. kiyoko also states at some point during that visit that she needs to get a gift for someone from class, which clarifies that she probably has friends outside of volleyball class ( in the same way that sawamura knows yui or ikejiri, or hinata knows friends from middle school ). furthermore, when she comes to visit hinata in the first year’s hallway, she gets a lot of comments from other students in shock, asking “who’s that pretty girl talking to hinata” / “hinata knows the hot third year ?” then when she calls hinata outside the school to come to the gym for his updated measurements, a student remarks “whoa, hinata knows that pretty third year !” this tells me that she probably doesn’t visit the first year’s hallway very often ( despite being friends with yachi ), & likely not the second year’s either.
she’s not insecure about her beauty. her legs, yes, but not her face. i’ve seen some interpretations in fics of kiyoko somehow being embarrassed by her attractiveness, but clearly it doesn’t seem to bother her in the manga, even when she’s flirted with by other characters. she also doesn’t seem to look shy / hide when she wears her swimsuit in official art or puts her hair up in a different hairstyle.
she has a sense of humor & she knows how to smile. i touched on this in like one sentence before, but she does have a sense of humor. it’s just not what you would expect from her -- it’s a bit dark ( such as when she grins when she scares yachi with the vocabulary term “kill block” ) & convoluted ( such as when she clearly goes against her actions by calling out “oikawa-san !!!” in the anime after ignoring him ). obviously, her humor doesn’t register with everyone, & is probably used at unusual / not obvious times, which means that it isn’t always read as humor. but she’s not some kind of humorless, cold robot girl. she just tends to dial back her reactions & behaviors in a more subdued way than other characters.

Jersey on my mind (part 24)
Through the next door bedroom window, Mila observes as Daryl makes his way over the wall, agile like a cat, without being detected by the drooling crowd, whose full attention is locked on the houses. With impressive flexibility the tall muscle pack straddles the wall and disappears out of her sight. We can’t stay here, Mila thinks and lets her gaze run past the curtain and over the street, sprinkled with walkers. They have to go somewhere, be with the others. How that’s gonna happen is another issue. They’re trapped inside the house. To open the front door at this time, especially since the walkers don’t know they’re in there, would be incredibly foolish.
Mila walks back to the bedroom, with her brain buzzing with activity, in an attempt to come up with an escape plan which does not involve risking her and her mini me’s lives. Juri lies on his belly on the bed, tapping his fingers against the surface of the walkman, when Mila enters the room. He looks up at her, the round, blue eyes reads her like a CAT scan. The small hands form a pattern of signs, asking her where Daryl went.
“He’ll get help. We’re on our own now, Malysh.” Mila sighs and pulls the long, tangled hair out of her face, in an attempt to clear her mind. She’s in charge and has to figure out a plan. Not being on her own anymore has absolutely been a blessing, but it has also decreased her usually very useful ability to make quick decisions. “I’ll figure something out.” Mila bites her lower lip.
The apple of Mila’s eye returns to his walkman device, tumbles over on his back on the bed and starts to air cycle with his short legs. Imagine being able to be so carefree in the middle of a siege, Mila thinks to herself and can’t help but smile at Juri’s coolness.
Just as she’s about to follow Juri’s example, plump down on the bed and stair at the ceiling, maybe doing some air cycling as well, she hears a loud crashing sound outside. Wood breaking, followed by something like metal cans falling to the ground. That can’t be good. Mila hurries over to the window, almost trips on Eddie-the-teddie-Vedder on her way, pushes it open and looks out with her heart in her throat.
Has the walkers finally made their way into the house? No, not their house, not the second one either. It must be over at Jessie’s.
“Fuck, fuck-” Mila sputters, and rests her forehead towards the open window. Now she really needs to get them over there. It’s foolish, risking both her and Juri’s lives by doing so, but it’s not just the two of them anymore. “Govno… SHIT!”
The flash of genius does not wait. It hits her like a meteorite, a damn stupid one. But it’s the only idea she has. What Mila said earlier to Spencer pops into her mind. The climb. Her eyes wander from the roof covering the porch underneath the window she’s standing in, to the roof on the other house, further over to Jessie’s porch. It’s not a climb, but she could easily make a jump for the other roof. But but what about two?
The gaps between the houses aren’t big, they stand quite narrow, but could still potentially be lethal, if she made a mistake. Not that she plans to- could she do both jumps, carrying Juri? It’s a risk she has to take.
It’s my only option, Mila thinks and turns around with a determined expression on her face. Juri looks at her from his upside down position.
“We gotta go, Malysh.” Mila explains and walks over to the bed and grabs her rifle and swings it over her head. “Bring the walkman, will you?”
Juri nods obediently and climbs up to standing position on the soft covers, before climbing down on the floor. Mila rips the covers from the bed, takes the sheet from the messy bundle of pillows and covers and rips it into two pieces. With the torn sheet over her shoulders, Mila lifts Juri from the floor and walks over to the window, swings her leg over the window sill and settles down, with one leg at each side over the window frame. She meets Juri’s wondering, yet ever so calm, eyes, as he looks around, interested in what’s gonna happen next.
“Now, this is very dangerous.” Mila explains, as motherly as she can. “And you’re not supposed to do this. But drastic times call for drastic measures.”
She gets out and settles with both of her feets on the roof, finding a balance point, leaving Juri sitting in the window.
When Mila was a toddler, a long time ago, back in Russia, her mother and her grandmother used to carry her around in makeshift harnesses, made of towels, big shawls and sometimes even old, stained tablecloths. When Mila was pregnant with Juri, her mother showed her how to make such a nifty harness over Skype. Way much cheaper than buying a Baby Bjorn! They practiced for months, Mila, her mother and Ellie Galka, over the struggling video transmission with poor resolution and delayed sound. But practice makes perfect, and by now Mila can create a harness, with her eyes closed, in her sleep. She quickly twists the sheet around her waist, ties and soon she has created a craft for Juri to sit in. Mila helps Juri climb up on her back, getting his legs into position on each side of her body, while feeling her spine deform itself into something similar to an accordion. He’s a bit heavier now. She’ll need a cane earlier than expected if this continues.
“Put the headphones on.” Mila instructs Juri as she looks over the edge of the roof, estimating the gap to ‘fair’. It’s doable, hopefully. With Juri on her back, and equipped with weapons and ammunition, she weighs more than she expected. “It’ll be okay, Juri. It’ll be okay…”
Mila’s heart beats like a runaway train inside her chest. But to hesitate now would be unhealthy, foolish. Mila takes a couple of deep breaths, clears her mind, as if she prepared for a gymnastic display. Below them the crowd of walkers crawling around like ants. They haven’t spotted them however. A soft squeeze on her arm signals that Juri is ready. It’s now or never. Can she jump or not?
With the willpower of a bull that sees red, Mila sprints over the short roof, like a fighter jet taking on a slightly too short runway. She charges, her feet lift off the ground and they fly through the air, over the clueless walkers, crowded between the houses. She lands with a thump on the sloping sheet metal roof on the other porch, with her heart stuck in her throat and climbs like a monkey up to the leveled part of the porch roof. Mila exclaims in sheer surprise, breathes gaspingly while Juri claps his small hands over her head. They made it! She made the jump!
But there’s another one to make. The one to Jessie’s house. Carefully, not to slip and slide down the sloping roof, Mila climbs over the roof, past the windows and towards the other end of the porch, the one next to Jessie’s. The house looks like a besieged city and the walkers have managed to get inside. The tiny flame of hope begins to weaken within Mila, but she refuses to give up, and there’s no reason to sneak around anymore. She needs answers, now! She puts her fingers in the corners of her mouth and whistles, loudly, signaling their presence on the roof for the entire street.
The heart slows down from its manic techno dance inside Mila’s chest when Michonne appears in the window, facing the street. She opens the window and, without a word, climbs out onto the roof.
“You’re alright.” Mila sighs in relief at the sight of Michonne, but also by the sight of Rick and Jessie, who also appear in the open window.
“We blocked the stairs.” Michonne replies and gives Mila a faint smile, as in relief.
Mila meets Rick’s gaze over Michonne’s shoulder. The sheriff gives her an impressed nod, before Mila returns to the dreadlocked woman at the other roof.
“Good to see you.” Mila says.
“You too.” Michonne squats. “Can you make the jump?”
“If you’re prepared to catch us.”
She starts backing away from the edge, carefully. The porch is approximately ten meters long, slopes and feels like walking on a slide. One wrong step would be the end of it. With one last look down at the street, at the hungry carcasses swarming at her feets like a drunken sea of spectators at a music festival, Mila once again prepares to make a leap; a deep breath in, filling the lungs with air, followed by a breath out. She hugs Juri’s denim dressed leg, before bolting over the metal roof, boots banging against the metal, before leaping as far as she possibly can through the air, landing on her toes and knees on the other side, into the arms of Michonne, causing the otherwise agile woman to fall on her behind. No wonder, when there’s a mother with a toddler in a homemade harness on her back, equipped with a rifle, flying through the air. Heavily panting from the adrenalin rush, caused by not only making the first jump, but also the second, the three of them get inside the house, where Rick, Jessie, Carl and Ron stand, sweaty and ravaged. No wonder, trying to keep the walkers away from getting upstairs and inside the house. Mila nods at the crowd through heavy breathing, squats on aching legs and lets Juri climb out of the sheet on her back. Rick looks at her from underneath the sweaty bangs, all curled up in his forehead, gives her a gaze of disbelief and relief.
“What a climb.”
“Jumps.” Mila corrects pantingly. “Twice.” She meets his gaze. “Told you I’d made it. ”
“You alright?” Rick asks, eyes wandering between her and Juri down on the floor. “Where’s Daryl?”
“The radio-” Mila says. “Abraham and Sasha, they’re back. Daryl went out to get them.”
“Where?”
“Don’t know. The other side of the wall.” She takes another deep breath and looks around at them. “Are you guys alright?” But the look she gets back at those words makes Mila frown. “What? What is it?”
Somewhere down the hall, Judith starts to cry. Carl turns as if on command and hurries to comfort his sister. Juri looks at him wonderingly, almost longingly, as he walks away; his idol, his hero. As if he was his big brother too. Mila, on the other hand looks, still with a frown, at Rick, Michonne and Jessie.
“It’s Deanna.” Rick sighs. “She won’t make it.”
“Wha-” Mila puts her hands over Juri’s ears, who’s full attention is still locked at the door, where Carl disappeared seconds ago. “She’s bitten?”
Jessie nods, the brown eyes are agitated and she seems to struggle to stay calm, for the sake of her kids probably. Ron seems shaken and the younger boy, Sam, is nowhere to be seen, probably in his room.
“She doesn’t have much time.” the blonde mother of two says.
“But- How? When?”
“When the wall went down.” Rick explains. “And we-” he looks around at them. “gotta get out of here. They’ll get up here sooner or later.”
“Any ideas how that’s gonna work?” Mila expresses with ill-concealed doubt. No, it seems impossible.
“I might have an idea.” Michonne says. “Are any of ya’ squeamish?”

Wonho’s entire focus when you're having a panic attack is on you. It doesn't matter what’s going on or what situation he’s in. When you start to panic, he stops whatever it is he’s doing and you become his sole focus. Whether he’s rehearsing, composing, at an awards show, it’s all irrelevant when it comes to your health. If panic attacks are something you're prone to, Wonho will have definitely looked into the best way to help you earlier on in your relationship. He didn't want to push your limits, but he wanted to know exactly what makes you feel better when you're panicking. For that reason, Wonho can typically calm you down pretty quickly. You're his life and his main priority. If you're not okay, he’s not okay and he’d do anything to make you okay again.

Our ever observant leader always knows when you're panicking, but even before that, he tries to keep you out of any situation that he thinks could bring you to that point. If large crowds cause you to panic, he’d intentionally pull you away from them and take a different path with you even if it took you off course a little bit. If you were worried about an exam coming up, he would dedicate a portion of his time to help you study so you would have more confidence in your success. Shownu would pride himself on being your guardian, kind of like a wall keeping all the bad out and protecting you. If it did get to the point where his defenses failed and you were panicking, he would feel as if he failed you. Expect apologies from him, but not before he amps up the skinship to make you feel better!

Minhyuk’s logic is to distract you, to get you thinking about anything other than the situation that’s causing you to panic. Whether it’s by physical means (clinging to you like a baby koala), emotional means (reminding you how beautiful/handsome you are and how much you mean to him), or mental means (helping you to see the big picture and other things to focus on), Minhyuk will be the annoying energetic little beam of light we know him to be until you were smiling again. He’d be fairly lighthearted throughout the whole thing, but don't think that means he takes the situation itself lightheartedly. If you need him in a more serious way, he’s there for that, too.

It may seem corny or expected, but Kihyun would definitely cook you something if he had the time. He’s very confident in his culinary abilities and if he’s able to use those talents to help you, it’s all the better. Holding your hand in one of his and seasoning the meal with his other, Kihyun would make sure you got both physical affection from him and emotional satisfaction that comes from eating delicious, homemade comfort food. Imagine eating a nice warm meal while cuddling with Kihyun on the couch and watching your favourite TV show. If panic attacks are sadly something that commonly plagues you, Kihyun will have a bunch of meals ready to go in the refrigerator so you could feel his love even if he wasn't around.

Hyungwon’s first resort is to use logic to help you understand the situation before you began to really panic about it. No, the situation you're in will not kill you. No, it more than likely isn't going to work out as bad as you think it will. Yes, life will go on when you're out of this situation. But he knows that logic isn't exactly the most comforting method of calming someone down, so he’s very much there for you in a physical sense, too. Though he isn't much of a touchy guy in general, he would let you cry on his shoulder and rest in his arms while he strokes your hair. He can be a real teddy bear when it counts, and this is definitely one of those times he realises how important it is for him to be there for you however you need him.

You’re his queen, his angel, his sunshine, his muse, his world...and when you're having a panic attack, his world stops spinning. The king of aegyo is likely to distract you with his cute charms, hoping that staying upbeat will keep him from panicking, too. I get a certain vibe with Changkyun that being in a relationship with him would just be very chill. Here is my OC, I hope it’s ok as I haven’t created one in a long time. She’s heavily influenced by myself actually, other than the second name and some of the animals kept. I do own 15 pets though, just no venomous or poisonous ones! I hope everyone’s OCs can get along!

Because of Amy’s concealed reserved nature, Yoite makes the effort to spend time with her and understand her. The former’s contentment with animals and quiet is favored quite a bit by the latter, as Yoite succumbs to tiredness and lethargy easily. She will occasionally unapologetically rest her head on Amy’s lap and nap for a short period of time, simply because she has decided that Amy is to be trusted. It is especially pleasant when Amy rubs her thumb back and forth gently on Yoite’s sleepy head.
Aside from napping though, Yoite does enjoy spending meals with Amy and spending quiet time with her snakes. She especially is attached to Amy’s Corn Snake. She lovingly refers to it as a ‘snek.’

Amy is a pale skinned adolescent woman of slightly above average height, and carries a few extra pounds. Despite this, she isn’t unfit and is actually surprisingly strong, which she claims is due to handling some of her more heavy animals and their tanks. When hugged, she tends to be a little squishy. She has slightly broad shoulders and a DD cup size. She has black hair in a choppy bob that is longer near the front of her face and gets shorter towards the back of her head and heterochromatic eyes that are green and brown respectively.
Amy has poor eye sight and wears a pair of navy coloured glasses to correct her vision. Clothing wise she wears a navy blue kennel coat made out of tough synthetic fibres and cotton over a loose turquoise button up shirt and ripped black jeans. Her shoes are black steel toe capped safety boots and have an iron plate running through the sole.
Her accessories consist of a small bottle of hand sanitizer clipped onto one of the belt loops on the right hand side of her jeans, a thick pair of handling gloves that hang out of her kennel coat pocket when not in use alongside a fold away snake hook, a white scarf with navy stars and rests a special pair of safety goggles that are designed to go over her glasses on her head.
Personality: Amy is generally laid back and won’t usually bother someone unless they speak to her first, unless it is someone she is already friends with. She’s naturally calm, and does her best to try and stop people from panicking. To do this, she purposefully comes up with cringey jokes and tries to push herself to bring up humour in bad situations. Whenever she herself is struggling with things, she’ll redirect the conversation with jokes, sarcasm or white lies. This is partially because she’s embarrassed and unwilling to share her vulnerable side to others, as well as not wanting to show weakness to make people think she’s an easy target in the killing game. She suffers from depression and can be prone to some serious low moods, to combat this she interacts with her animals, who she doesn’t mind sharing her secrets with. If she has no access to them, she tends to isolate herself in her room until she knows she can convincingly tell a cover story or make satire out of the situation. She prefers to hang around with one or two close friends rather than get too close to everybody. She is well aware that not everyone is free from malice and that dead men tell no tales.

Kaede: “Oh yeah, I remember you mentioning earlier. Snakes and lizards right? But… Aren’t snakes slimy?”
Amy: “Haha, no, not quite. Frogs are, but not snakes. A lot of people assume that they are though because they’re shiny. If you were to stroke a snake, most feel cool, and smooth. A little bit like a leather sofa, but more sleek. Some snakes might have specialised rough scales which when they vibrate make a rattling sound, or on their belly to help them grip trees.”
Kaede: “I see… Are you ever afraid of getting bitten though?”
Amy: “Are you afraid that I could bite you?”
Kaede: “What? Uh, no, I guess…”
Amy: “Haha, don’t worry, I won’t. However, think of it this way. If something has a mouth, it can bite. People often fear snakes due to the possibility of being bitten, but in reality a snake would rather just run away. Biting is usually a last resort because it’s frightened of you. You’re much more likely to be savaged by a dog than harmed by a snake. It’s a fact that’s often over looked because dogs are cute and fluffy, whereas many people think reptiles are ugly.”
Kaede: “That is… A unique way of seeing it, but it makes sense. If we get out of here, would you help me touch a snake? Even if it’s just a little one, I’d like to try.”
Amy: “I would be very happy to, I know just the snake to introduce you to!”
Reaction Yoite: Amy would likely get on with Yoite, and would be interested in working together with her to help educate people on reptiles, providing a handling session and keeping the animals under control as Yoite controls the students and explains information to them in a way that they’d understand.

Mystery Masterpost 2.18

This episode...was GREAT. For the first time in awhile I actually cared about the duel and what was happening. With the last few duels it’s more about just going through the motions to get to an objective. With this duel, it’s about needing to win from both sides, with stakes and actions and WORDS that actually make the duel exciting and not just monster after monster. Of course, this is merely my opinion but you have to admit this episode was well-done and pretty entertaining in of itself.
Now, regardless, I’ll move on to the mysteries themselves:
-For one, we now know that Ai is NOT involved with Yusaku’s past ten years ago. If we can assume that Akira learned the full truth about what happened, his words then suggest that Ai has no part in anything that went on when Yusaku was child. However, this begs the question of, at this point, how do the Ai’s fit into the plot? Akira’s questions of how the Ai fits into anything (and his seeming musing on whether or not it having free will) kind of makes me wonder if the show is subtly hinting that Ai is somehow involved in the plot but just not in the way we initially assumed...???
-Okay, so, I’m gonna say one word right here about Kusanagi and the picture below:
Bullshit.
Kusanagi claims in this picture that he was unaware of SOL Technologies involvement in the incident of ten years past, seeming startled and surprised when Zaizen announces this. However, take a look at what he says back in episode 6:
He knew from the beginning that SOL Technologies was involved.
So, why is he suddenly claiming innocence of that fact to the audience now? Why is he acting so surprised and startled? He had been suspicious from the very start that SOL Tech was behind Yusaku’s lost memories and his own brother gone missing. Yet, here he seems completely out of whack with that fact, not even claiming “Oh, I knew it all along. I WAS right, it IS SOL who destroyed both my life and Yusaku’s”. At this point, either the writers forgot what they said in episode 6 or, as I suspect, there’s something more to Kusanagi. And, while I’m fully aware that I should be more dismissive of it because Kusanagi hasn’t truly done anything wrong yet, let’s look at something also quite peculiar about episode 7 in regards to Aoi Zaizen herself:
Look at the above picture - what is Aoi holding in episode 7? A teddy bear, right? Well, look at what she’s holding in episode 18:
As pointed out to me by @mitsi-her Aoi’s holding a Evilswarm Mandragora in this episode but, yet, in episode six this is clearly either contradicted or made ambiguous as Aoi, shown at nearly the same age in both images, holds a teddy bear not a creepy ass monster doll. I’d like to inquire if this suggests, for Akira, the possibility of implanted memories in his mind? If he loved his sister so much and clung onto these memories with such cherish, why does his mind seem to mess up such a simple fact as to what kind of toy Aoi is holding? And, assuming we say everything is A-Okay with Akira’s memory, when and why did Aoi switch out her mandrake for a teddy bear? Or, is it possible that said teddy bear is still the mandrake but merely “transformed” in episode 7 because we’re only seeing Akira’s memories while in episode 18, since Blue Angel’s also a witness to the “memories” Akira is talking about, we see more of the flaws in Akira’s memories vs what Aoi remembers?
Either way, the way both episode 6 and 7 seem to contradict episode 18 with both Aoi’s, Akira’s and Shoichi’s recollection is strange and fascinating to say the least. Why change certain facts of the show, why make things strange and bizarre and surreal in a show revolving around finding the truth at the heart of the mystery? There’s something definitely more to the three aforementioned characters and I’m interested to see what exactly we have in store for them.
-Ema. This episode has kept her rather sidelined this entire time but there’s something almost peculiar about her every time she appears. For example, when she says “I knew this would happen”-
-it’s almost like she’s able to predict things amazingly well ahead of time to know that whatever they found would force Akira to duel Playmaker in the end. And for someone who seems not to know what was in that data, it seems like she already well-predicted that whatever they found out would lead Akira to try and protect Playmaker’s innocence in the end which is odd because, accordinly beforehand, she didn’t know the extent of the damage SOL did.
What’s more, when Akira starts talking about his parents and how he lost them, we don’t get to see Ema’s expression. Her back is to the camera so there’s no way to tell how she feels about such an explanation. We don’t get to see if she feels remorse or surprise for the story Akira is telling or if she’s even amused that he’s trying to catch Playmaker off-guard with “feels”. Instead, we have this shot of her back which suggests nothing about what she’s experiencing while Playmaker, on the other hand, looks a bit distraught. It makes her character almost more “suspicious” in some way, more “callous” and “uncaring” and rather cold-hearted for what is happening. In a way, it almost makes me question what type of relationship Ema has to Akira, especially since, as this episode kind of confirmed, they weren’t childhood friends like some of the fandom has suspected.
^ In this scene too, it’s almost suggested that Ema realizes that, if Akira falls, it’s possible that, at some point, Blue Angel will come to his aide. She doesn’t seem to show signs of knowing Blue Angel is in the vicinity but boy oh boy does she suggest that she’s highly aware of that fact. And, judging by her cunning intuition from the past few episodes, she is indeed aware that Blue Angel is watching from somewhere.
It makes me realize that, in some way, Ema has something that she’s hiding, a special ability or something that might be associated with why she has elf ears and why her history and past is so shrouded in secrecy. Who exactly is Ema Bessho? Why does she suggest she knows things, that there’s something more to her and why does the show hide any trace of her past from us? There’s something more to her here, just like there is to everyone else in this show...
-The word future here is used twice within two sentences that, in a way, loosely connect to each other. When Yusaku talks about betting his future, it’s interesting how the word “future” repeats itself with the Link circuit chant:
In a way, I feel like this is either awkward placement or, better yet, a really brilliant way of foreshadowing and pointing out that the idea of link circuits are connected to a “future” and maybe (as hinted in past episodes) “parallel” worlds. This is merely an observation but the way Yusaku says these two lines side by side makes me think there’s something more to what’s going on here than these words simply just being lines of dialogue.
-Also, when Yusaku and Shoichi sync up in their words, that in itself is very eerie. There’s been a theory going around that these two are potentially brothers and I’m definitely getting that kind of vibe from the way both Playmaker and Shoichi suddenly snap at Akira’s want to protect Yusaku. In a way, it almost seems that they’re connected and I certainly wonder if they are and just don’t realize it themselves because the way the show is phrasing and timing their words is almost too coincidental...
-Now, Blue Angel again. I find it rather interesting how she reacts to Akira’s line of “oh, if a stranger kidnapped my sister I don’t know how I’d feel”. She seems to recollect something here but, as to what that is it is uncertain. It certainly seems like she knows what Akira is talking about, like she’s recognized something from her memories but, whatever it is she doesn’t show the audience. This makes it almost certain that Aoi was possibly involved in what was happening ten years ago and that, strangely enough, she knows something more that she hasn’t revealed to her brother as of yet...
-And, speaking of Akira, there were times with him that makes me squint my eyes and wonder about him because there’s something happening with him here that’s almost...odd, I guess? Like, look at the below image:
Throughout the entire duel, Akira has been serious and rather sympathetic to Playmaker’s trauma, playing cool in his duel against Playmaker and trying to talk him down. However, in this image above it almost seems like he’s amused by Playmaker’s desperation to duel him. His face reads as haughty, arrogant, but also reads, in a way, brainwashed. The half-lidded eyes, the kind of weird smile, it’s almost out-of-place for the entirety of Akira’s character this whole episode. And, yes, I know he isn’t brainwashed but that frame right there gives off a sort of amused and out-of-touch vibe to me that contrasts heavily with the down-to-earth conversations and the pleading he has with Playmaker throughout the entirety of this episode.
What’s even more interesting is that, every time he gets damaged (which we see only once this episode and again in the preview), there’s blue light and electricity that occurs on his body like a “glitch” of some sort. This is rather odd and intriguing as Playmaker never seems to suffer from this effect throughout their duel. The fact that Akira is wincing suggests that he’s actually feeling pain from such a blow which is all the more alarming because this is a virtual duel, not a real one. (Lol nvm. The same thing happens to Playmaker and Blue Angel too. This is what happens when I rush through a masterpost, kids, without checking through the episode or paying attention to last episode’s happenings regarding this occurrence. Thanks to @the-yugioh-theorist and @sharauril for pointing this out to me :D.)
Unless he were an AI or whatever, such phenomenons shouldn’t be occurring with him and it also makes Ema’s previous words all the more concerning when you realize she’s suggesting that, if Playmaker does something to make Akira fall then it’s going to be Blue Angel who will fight against Playmaker in place of her brother. Even if Akira tells Playmaker everything, if Akira falls then there’s no doubt Blue Angel won’t let him leave without some sort of payback. Almost certainly, if things go terrible for Akira, then there’s gonna be a whole lot of hell to pay on Yusaku’s part.
