@whumptober Day 12: Red | Insomnia | "I'm up, I'm up!"
Teak wasn't sure how it happened. One minute, he and Linden were training in the forest. The next, they were ambushed by Brennus' guardsmen. And now he and his good friend were fighting for their lives as they fought off the guardsmen. Apparently, the ambush was meant for Alder, only for them to fall for it instead.
Linden cried out a battle cry as his Flare spell flew from his hand, burning a few guardsmen, slowing them down. He turned to his younger adopted brother, calling out, "Go, Teak! I'll handle this!"
"What?" Teak asked incredulously, as he blocked a guardsman's sword with his own. "And leave ya behind to fight them all off? No way!" Teak knew that Linden was saying that out of worry and to protect the youngest Fierce Forest, but he could fight! He knew his way around using the sword, so Linden shouldn't worry about him that much.
Linden frowned, before his focus was back to the fray. There was no time to argue; they needed to kill these guardsmen before they figured out where they were living.
Teak dodged a guardsman's swipe of their sword, before he sliced them down with his sword. Blood spattered on him, to which his stomach turned; he wasn't used to death and blood constantly, but now was not the time to get sick. If they didn't kill them now—
"Teak!" Linden cried out.
Teak turned to face him, seeing that Linden was still fighting off the guardsmen. He raised a brow. Why did he—
He heard a battle cry to his left, and he barely dodged another swipe of a sword. The sword's sharp side hit his tunic, but otherwise, he didn't feel any pain. Gritting his teeth, he raised his sword before striking down the guardsman, killing them instantly.
The battle felt like hours, and Teak was struggling to stay on his feet. Why was he feeling so tired now? Was his stamina that bad? He needed to work on that so he wouldn't be so tired during a fight like this.
"FLARE!" Linden cried, as flames erupted from his palm, aimed at one last guardsman. The guardsman screamed as the spell hit them, burning them to a crisp, before they fell to the ground, dead.
Linden sighed, wiping off the sweat from his brow from the arduous battle. He turned to Teak, who smiled at him. But his eyes widened, which Teak hummed in confusion.
No. Linden wasn't staring at him. He was staring at Teak's thigh. Teak glanced down, and noticed a long line of red dribbling down from his thigh, the red staining his pant leg.
…Oh…
Blood. He was seeing blood. And he was losing a lot of it, too.
Pain hit then, as Teak hissed, holding his thigh to stop the bleeding. The blood dripped down between his fingers, staining his hand red. Where did he even get this wound? Was it from the slash by the guardsman he dodged?
Linden leapt into action immediately upon seeing his brother hurt, rushing towards him. He cursed under his breath, carefully removing Teak's hand from the gushing wound to examine it. The slash was deep—it likely hit an artery, hence why Teak was bleeding so much.
"Dammit," Linden cursed again, gritting his teeth in anger and worry. He should have called a warning earlier, then Teak wouldn't be…
"A-am I gonna die?" Teak asked, fear gripping his heart at that thought. Dizziness hit him, as he held his head. He struggled to keep his eyes open and to stay balanced, but due to losing massive amounts of blood, he wasn't sure how long he would last.
"Hold on," Linden tried to reassure, his voice breaking; that scared Teak more than anything. Hearing Linden scared for Teak was a sound he didn't want to hear. "I'll get you to Holly and Aspen! Just stay awake for me, okay?"
"I-I'll try," Teak whimpered, the pain so strong tears began to form in his eyes. He wanted this intense agony to stop, but he held on. For the other Fierce Forests. For Linden.
Linden helped Teak on his back, and Teak wrapped his arms around Linden's torso. The sleepiness beckoned Teak, but he stayed strong. Keep his eyes open; that should be simple enough.
Linden ran as fast as he could to get back to the fort, his running slowed thanks to Teak on his back. Teak held on as best as he could, groaning in pain as the pain flared up from his thigh. This hurt so much—all he wanted was to nap it through. But he knew that Linden would worry over him if he closed his eyes now. He needed to keep his eyes open till they got back.
It felt like hours of running, even though it was actually minutes. Long minutes of pain that grew stronger, and Teak's fatigue began to take its toll. He nearly fell asleep right there, but Linden's voice pulled him back from his brief slumber, telling him to hang on. From a distance, Teak could see the familiar brown getting closer. Brown that made him feel at home.
The fort. They were getting closer to the fort.
"Aspen! Holly!" Linden cried out, "Help! Teak's hurt badly!"
Finally… Teak thought, the sleepiness getting to be too much. I can rest…
He closed his eyes, his grip around Linden's torso growing slack. He didn't realize he fell off of Linden's back until he passed out from blood loss; the last thing he heard until darkness too over him was Linden's screams of his name.
