Remembering Andres Siim (1962--2020), one of the most talented architects who entered the scene in the late 1980s with his very successful competition entries, most of which were sadly never built. This one, however, is his and Hanno Kreis' perhaps the best known realised work, the 1994 Nissan Building in Tallinn's Lasnamäe district. When built, it was hailed as the first truly modern building in town, using a language totally different from what had been the norm in previous decades, and materials that had just newly arrived in the country that had reestablished its independence 3 years earlier, in 1991... Unfortunately, like many of Siim's winning entries for prolific buildings (most of these with partners Kristel Ausing and Hanno Kreis), it was never realised... Kadriorg Stadium Grandstand in Tallinn. Architect Elmar Lohk, structural engineer August Komendant, built in 1936–1938. The grandstand at Estonia’s premier stadium is a symbol of local sporting life, a great architectural achievement, daring in both form and structure. Elmar Lohk followed developments in world architecture, and the building has a strong affinity with the architecture of the Helsinki Olympic Stadium (by Yrjö Lindgren and Toivo Jäntti, 1934–1938). The grandstand is comprised of 26 parallel reinforced concrete frames, of which the 12 middle ones support the 12.8 m cantilevered roof. The roof plate is 12 cm thick. The grandstand is 112.3 m long and initially had 3,500 seats, of which 2,000 were under the roof. Side facade of Sakala Center in Tallinn, originally the Political Education Building for the local Communist Party. Designed by Raine Karp (and partly by Toivo Kallas), completed in 1985. Later, the building was used for all sorts of cultural events. Unfortunately, the exceptionally well-built and well-furnished building was almost completely demolished - save for the tower not seen in the photo - in 2007 and is now replaced by a much larger shopping centre named Solaris with two cinemas and concert hall.
