I finally got a chance to read and catch up to the manga for Tales of Crestoria! The art is phenomenal and the characters and plot super interesting! But I really to bring attention the fact there are parts of the story that can be really GRAPHIC, and may not be for the faint of heart in comparison to what is shown on the mobile game and or other Tales series. There are specific trigger warnings that can be depicted in the manga and found here. Thank you so much for the translators for not only translating but also bringing these sensitive topics to attention! However, I wanted to go into specifics just in case.

Chapter 1- page 38 depictions of nudity of a minor, throughout the chapter there are mentions of child prostitution

Chapter 12- page 14 depictions of violence and gore, a man’s skull gets smashed

Chapter 14- page 4 ,5, 6, 7, 8, 9 depictions of violence and gore through mass human torture and slaughter

Chapter 15 pages 10, 11, 12 depiction of sexual abuse and rape

Japanese illustrator and animator Mutsumi Inomata has passed away on March 10, 2024 at age 63. A cause of death was not shared.

Inomata is best known as one of the main character designer on a number of Bandai Namco's Tales of series. Her past works includeTales of Destiny, Tales of Eternia, Tales of Destiny 2, Tales of Rebirth, Tales of the Tempest, Tales of Innocence, Tales of Hearts, Tales of Graces, Tales of Xillia, Tales of Xillia 2, Tales of Zestiria, Tales of Berseria, and Tales of Crestoria.

Within anime, Inomata worked as an animator at Ashi Production from 1979 until 1982, when she and some animators from Ashi Production left the company and founded Kaname Production. There, she worked as character designer and animator on such anime as Acrobunch - The Quest for Treasure, Plawres Sanshiro, Leda - The Fantastic Adventure of Yohko, Once Upon a Time, and Watt Poe to Bokura no Ohanashi, among others. In her later freelance career, she drew character designs for such anime as Future GPX Cyber Formula, Saitama Bōsō Saizensen Flag! Shinimonogurui no Seishun!!, and Brain Powerd. She also drew the illustrations for the Utsunomiko and The Weathering Continent novel series, both of which later inspired anime adaptations.

So far it looks like it's just japanese only but my friend tells me that they're going to be dropping a chapter every week! I'm so excited to return to these characters and see how they're rewriting the story to accommodate for the lack of legacy characters (or so I hear! Maybe they WILL be in here, I donno!)

Earlier today I was looking at the old Tales subs on my translation channel, and feeling kind of nostalgic.... Apparently I started translating for Tales more than 11 years ago 8′D  I kind of want to get back into them again... Is anyone still interested in subs for the drama CDs? Symphonia’s Rodeo Ride Tour, Vesperia’s anthology drama CDs, Abyss’ animation fondisks, Graces’ anthology drama CDs... Or has everyone moved on to newer games ;w;

I still think the biggest mistake Bamco made with Crestoria, and one I find that still affects it to this day, was listening to that part of the fanbase that complained that there weren’t going to be any legacy characters in the game and ultimately caving in to put them in anyway under the auspice that a cast of all-new original characters wasn’t going to be as effective as having familiar names to elicit interest in the long-time fans and bring in new players to join the fanbase.

Idk maybe it’s because of the differing mindsets between a Console Tales Game and a Mobile Tales Game (at least, there’s a very obvious - and understandable - reason for those mindsets in the West), but you don’t really see this kind of backlash in the former. Whereas in the latter introducing an all-new cast without legacy characters a’la Crestoria and Luminaria you’re going to have your dissenters (and your doubters) question whether or not it can have that same draw on people regardless of the narrative premise.

Setting aside the obvious pitfalls that plague mobile gaming, including legacy Tales characters into a game that was originally not intended to have any has the same reaction of shooting yourself in the foot and never bothering to patch it up because now you have a manga that’s going to be adapting the material - without the legacy characters. And there is no guarantee it’s going to include the plotlines or the sudden cliffhanger(s) that were alluded to in the game. Which leads to another problem because if it does it’s going to result in one of two things: expys of the legacy characters - which I don’t think parts of the fanbase are going to jive with because they won’t be those characters - or all-new characters that’ll have nothing to do with the legacy characters but will take those plotlines for themselves because DINGDINGDING the game is no longer available. And if those plotlines get resolved? There’s still no way to guarantee they would arrive at the same conclusions under the legacy characters had it continued in a visual media format.

What I’m saying is, Bamco should’ve just stuck to their guns and kept Crestoria as a legacy-free Tales title in the same way Luminaria was (although I do wonder if they would have included legacy characters in the same way Genshin Impact brought Aloy from Horizon over - make them playable in but have no effect on the canon story whatsoever - had it continued) because the decision to change course is going to feel like a black mark on Crestoria’s history.

So I discovered an old folder on my phone called "Crestoria goodbye album". I made it when Takes if Crestoria shut down. The rule was "if I like this character they get angel wings (or devil wings for Yuri and Leon)".

My party at shutdown. We fought in the arena daily and lost so many times, but sometimes Stahn oneshotted some losers. Stahn was spoiled as you can see by his 10000+ attack. Never finished maxing him out. I had SSR Kanata but used the one from the start of the game because he's special.
