A Life On The Road - Part 4 (A Luke Hemmings FanFic)

Overview: Elizabeth and Calum have been best friends since they were 15/14 respectively. Elizabeth is from and lives in the UK, but her family lived in Sydney for a brief 2 year period which is how the two met.

With 5SOS embarking on their biggest and most ambitious world tour to date, Cal has invited Elizabeth along to work as a photographer/content creator for their social media. This is in the hopes that travelling with them will help Elizabeth achieve her dream of becoming a full-time travel writer.

Elizabeth is acquainted with the rest of 5SOS but doesn’t know them tremendously well. Obviously that changes as they are all forced to be in one another’s company for the duration of the tour. As the tour progresses and new friendships blossom, Elizabeth feels the connection between her and Luke grow more and more.

A/N: Picking up in Paris. There’s drinking and swearing in this one.

“That was genuinely one of the best meals I’ve ever had.” Michael announced as we exited the restaurant.

“It was incredible! I’m still so jealous of your main though, Mikey. Like, mine was good but I should have got the same as you.” I replied.

“So where to next? The night is still young and we have no obligations before tomorrow’s soundcheck.” Ashton asked the group.

A bar was obviously the unanimous decision. But I did convince them to walk aimlessly until we found a bar. That way we could see some of the landmarks lit up and I could get some content both for the band insta and to go alongside any Paris articles of mine that got picked up.

“I’m going to have my work cut out topping these,” I told the guys as I reviewed the short series of photos I had just taken of them by The Louvre, “So I think that counts as me done for the night. Time to find the nearest baaarrrr!”

It didn’t take long to find a bar. It also didn’t take long for us to all have a cocktail glass held in each hand. While the meal was excellent, it was quite a posh place, something none of us were exactly used to. This bar felt much more like our kind of place. It was time to really relax and have fun as nothing more than a group of friends.

In terms of music it was a bit hit and miss as to whether or not we knew the song playing. While that stopped us singing, it never stopped us from dancing. Also, not being familiar with a song was an excellent opportunity to get the next round of drinks in.

“Hurry up! I don’t have a good grip on these! Quick! Take your fucking drinks!” I yelled as I returned from the bar doing my very best to carry five glasses.

“Thanks, EP!” Cal shouted back as he took two glasses from me, passing one on to Michael.

“TO EP FOR ADDING MORE FUN, AND RIGHT NOW DRINKS, TO TOUR AND BEING A STEP CLOSER TO ACHEIVING HER DREAMS!” Ashton called as he raised his glass into the air for a toast.

“TO EP!” The four of them shouted as they clinked their glasses together.

“You guys are too much at times,” I laughed, “But thank you very much none the less.”

With that slightly embarrassing moment of attention out the way we got back to dancing and sipping on our drinks. After a few songs Cal excused himself to the smoking area. Not long after he’d gone Michael went up to the bar as it was his turn to buy the round, leaving just me, Luke and Ash dancing in a little triangle of space. That was until Live In The Moment by Portugal. The Man started playing. 

As soon as we recognised the song Luke gave me a knowing look as I exclaimed ‘As if!’ because only hours ago in that random little coffee shop had we bonded over our mutual current obsession with the song. From that point until the song faded into the next Luke and I were solely focussed on one another as we passionately sang the lyrics at each other and let the beat draw our drunk, dancing bodies closer together in the already small space. 

Without even realising it we became only inches apart, loudly singing into each other’s faces with our drink-free hands moving between air punches, waves and resting on each other (his hand on my waist, mine on his shoulder). And then far too soon the song was over.

“That’s officially made my night,” I declared as I took a step back and downed what remained of my drink, “That was the best coincidence ever.”

“I think that just became our song.” Luke smiled down at me while pushing a few curls back out of his face.

“Are you fucks going to take your drinks now? Because I’m 30 seconds away from drinking them.” Michael somewhat playfully asked, pulling the two of us out of our bubble.

It wasn’t long after taking our drinks from Michael that Mr. Brightside came on and the five of us went mad for it on the dancefloor. And it turned out that, just like a multitude of other clubs I’d been to, Mr Brightside was a subtle signal that closing time was fast approaching. After the two songs that followed, the music stopped and the house lights came on.

“Boooo!” We all declared, clearly not ready for the night to be over just yet.

We collected our jackets from the cloakroom as we were ushered out into the cold Parisian night air with the rest of the crowd. Once out on the street we checked the time for the first time in hours. Realising it was 3:05am and nowhere else was likely to still be open we began our walk back to the tour bus.

It may seem strange to say, but drunk walks home at the end of a night out are one of my favourite things in the world. I get such a feeling of togetherness when I’m laughing and slightly staggering down the street with friends. It always makes me feel like I belong. And semi-lost under the streetlights of Paris I had that feeling of belonging wash its warmth over me. I took two large steps to catch up with Cal and looped my arm through his, 

“I so fucking glad I’m here. Thank you so much for being my best friend. And thank you for having bandmates that are so easy to get along with.” I told Cal as I placed my drunk, sleepy head against his arm as I wasn’t quite tall enough to reach his shoulder.

As Cal and I continued our drunk heart-to-heart we absentmindedly followed the other three in what we hoped was the direction of the tour bus. Seeing as we hadn’t been paying much attention to them and their antics, it was a bit of a surprise to hear Ash shout “Smile!” at us. Thankfully we were quick enough to pose. 

The result was a pretty cool photo of us, arms still linked, pulling tongue-out faces while flipping the camera off. I asked Ash to send it to me, edited it a bit and kept it in my Insta drafts for review and posting in the morning. By the time I’d done this, we’d managed to find our way back to the bus. Once we all piled in we promptly collapsed in our bunks for what remained of the night.

The next day was actually quite a relaxed one for me by touring standards.

I was woken up by Michael repeatedly prodding my upper arm. Once I stirred and opened one eye to find him there, he let me know that Ashton had gone and done a coffee run and mine was waiting for me in the kitchen area. Begrudgingly I got up, because I knew the caffeine would do me good, and I also really needed painkillers for my head. As I padded into the bus’ kitchen area in my XXL tee I saw that the guys were looking just as rough as I felt and probably looked too.

“Thanks for the coffee, Ash.” I said as I picked up the cup with my name on, “I don’t suppose there’s any painkillers on this bus?”

“Got some on my coffee run. Here you go.” Ash responded handing me the small rectangular box.

“You lifesaver.” I said taking the box and settling down on the small sofa next to Luke who was barely awake.

As everyone was pretty hungover we didn’t talk much. We just sat in a comfortable silence while we waited for the caffeine to kick in. 

The silence was finally broken by Lou getting onto the bus and letting the four guys know it was soundcheck in 30 minutes. This prompted them to go and change out of their joggers and freshen up a bit. As they did so I dug out my laptop, charger and notebook from my bunk in order to set up a temporary desk at the kitchen booth’s table and get some work done.

After two hours I’d managed to finish, proof read and send off my article on Glasgow to ELLE; as well as flesh out two article ideas for Paris. Pleased with what I had achieved in that time, despite my headache only being dulled slightly by the painkillers, I took a break. 

Predictably, after making some instant mug ramen, I ended up on Instagram; which was when I remembered the photo in my drafts from last night. I clicked onto it and saw drunk me had gone a bit too far when altering the brightness and warmth of the photo. Once I had edited them down and was pleased with how it looked, I tapped out the caption “Two of a kind!” with the emoji of the two dancing girls at the end, tagged Cal and hit ‘Post’. Not quite ready to go back to work, I decided to get dressed and head into the venue to see what the guys were up to.

The guys were just finishing up the meet and greet, so I hopped round to the front of the venue and gave some of the roadies a hand with prepping the t-shirts and hoodies into piles by size at the merch booth. In between pile sorting, Lou appeared to let us know the boys were in Dressing Room 4 doing radio interviews over the phone and to avoid that area of the venue until they were done. Not knowing when exactly that would be, I headed back to the bus once the merch had been sorted and video called Drew.

“Work is so shit without you. Your replacement sucks too.” Drew complained.

“Aww I’m sorry, Drew! Have you heard back from the other firm you applied to?”

“No, not yet. But I should hopefully within the next week. I can’t survive much longer with these people. How’re you surviving on the road?”

“Really well actually! Not to rub it in or anything.” I laughed.

As I was divulging into some of the details and anecdotes I heard someone slapping their hands along the length of the bus as they approached the door.

“Oh. It sounds like I’m going to have to go.” I managed to say before the door opened and Luke stepped onto the bus, “Adios. I’ll call you again soon.”

“Oh shit, sorry, I didn’t realise you were on the phone.” Luke apologised as he caught the tail-end of my conversation, “We’re all just chilling in the main dressing room now, so I said I’d come and find you.”

“Let me grab my camera gear and I’ll be right with you.” I told him while shimmying out of the booth at the front of the bus.

After a few wrong turns backstage, which resulted in a game of Marco Polo between Luke and Michael as a way to guide us the right place, we were back into our comfortable evening routine. They got prepped and hyped up and I documented it with my camera. That evening I took each of them down the hall to a really cool, cobalt blue door I’d spotted for some solo shots. Luke, taking the longest to decide on his stage outfit for the night, was the last of the four I photographed.

“That red silk shirt was such a good choice.” I complemented him as I held my eye up to the viewfinder, “It contrasts this cobalt door so well. And the two together really bring out your eyes.”

“He doesn’t need a bigger head than he’s already got!” Cal called playfully down the corridor.

Luke let out his infectious giggle and I seized the opportunity to grab another photo while chuckling myself. It was a great photo. Such a pure moment captured. I almost didn’t want to share it on their social media, but I knew that was a foolish, and not to mention selfish, thought.

Not long after that the guys were called to the stage. I took my place side of stage and ritualistically fist bumped each of them as they took to the stage for another amazing show. I felt I had already got enough content while in Paris, so I chose to just enjoy the performance instead of worrying about shots and footage. It was the first time I had let myself do so on this tour and I had a blast.

“It looked like you were having a good time tonight.” Cal later remarked when we were all back on the bus and on the road to Brussels. 

“Don’t tell Lou, but I sort of let myself take tonight off shooting to enjoy the gig as I already have so much Paris content.” I confessed as I reclined on the sofa in the lounge at the back of the tour bus.

“Your secret is safe with us.” Cal reassured with a wink, before taking the final swig that remained in his beer bottle, “Right you fucks, I’m off to bed. See you in Brussels.”

Not long after, Mike and Ash made their way to their bunks as well. This left just Luke and I chilling in the back lounge. As he was scrolling through Netflix looking for a film to put on, I asked him, 

“Are you not shattered too?”

“Eh,” He shrugged, “A bit, yeah. But I always have trouble sleeping. Plus after our drunk chat the other night I’d like to hang out with you more, and I seem to only really get the chance at night.”

“I’m not going to argue with that.” I responded while draping a blanket over my shoulders as the opening credits to Groundhog Day began. After a pause I continued, “We can hang out during the day you know. Like take a break and grab lunch or something. Hey, why don’t we do the coffee run together tomorrow? That’ll be an opportunity to hang out.”

“I’d like that,” He smiled, and then tugged a little at the blanket, “Don’t go hogging all the blanket.”

I released my grip on the blanket, allowing Luke to drape it over himself as well. The added warmth of his body next to mine made me feel even cosier and it wasn’t long before I nodded off to sleep.

The tour bus abruptly coming to a stop a few hours later managed to rouse me from my slumber. As my eyes fluttered open, the rest of my body registered that I wasn’t in my bunk, or even laying down, and that the warm thing my head was on smelt very good. Once my eyes were open and no longer fuzzy with sleep I realised that I had fallen asleep during the film, as I was still sat on the lounge’s U-shaped sofa. Luke must have fallen asleep at some point during the film too, as the nice smelling thing my head was resting on was his shoulder, and I could feel his head resting gently on top of mine as he snored softly.

“Wake up. Hey, Luke. Wake up, “I prompted as I gently shook his thigh, “I think we’re in Brussels.”

🚨TS7 ALIVE THEORY🚨

GUYS this is INSANE i just connected A LOT of stuff and now i’m gonna put it all here... ENJOY:

1. **why she disappeared poem:

okay so the ending of this poem has always struck me as something very important and here’s why... so in the rep tour on netflix, the why she disappeared poem is played right before getaway car all except for the last section: “and in the death of her reputation, she felt truly alive” however it is played at the very end of the movie and it is written on the screen in gold glitter (umm just like the hearts on her countdown........)

i’ve always thought that ts7 could be called alive because the way she phrases the last part makes it sound like “and in the death of her *ts6 album name* she felt truly *ts7 album name*”

credit to @july-9th-one-fiftyeight for realizing this part: in the credits for the rep movie on netlfix it has a little description under why she disappeared and it says: “(video interlude, sequel to “...more”)” hello? ummm this is suspicious.... so this implies that there is something, an album perhaps, that preludes this poem and that very well could be ts7 but i’ll connect this more later tho

2. the “ts5.5” idea:

so if taylor followed her typical album release schedule, ts5.5, as i call it bc reputation is actually ts6, would’ve been released in 2016, but it wasn’t... the kimye drama all occurred in july of 2016, giving taylor enough time to put ts5.5 to the side and to make reputation and release it by 2017

this implies that ts5.5 might have something to do with ts7 and if that’s true, taylor was potentially working on what we now know as ts7 since the 1989 era (or maybe even sooner...)

3. the 1989 album foreword:

okay so i know this could be a stretch but there is a possibility that taylor knew what she wanted to do for ts5.5 (which could be connected to ts7) before she released 1989...

in the 1989 album foreword, taylor says “I've told you my stories for years now. Some have been about coming of age. Some have been about coming undone. This is a story about coming into your own, and as a result... coming alive.”

in the foreword she literally explains her stories for different albums and states that 1989 is a story of coming into your own, but the next part seems imporant... she follows it with an elipsis and then says that the result of coming into your own (the story of 1989) is coming alive (the story of ts5.5? or even ts7??)

4. nostalgic vibes:

so taylor liked @mustlikeme4me ’s post on insta today and the caption was about how ts7 might have nostalgic vibes...

this brings me back to the pictures from her childhood house that she posted on july 13th of 2018... the two pictures are taken on huji camera so they literally say the date in the pictures too so i am pretty sure the fact that the july 13th is literally on both of the photos is significant... not to mention it is also a wax seal on the 2019 calendar *gasp*

one of the pictures is her in her childhood room with others and she captions it “take pictures in your mind of your childhood room...” which is a lyric from never grow up, a very nostalgic feeling song

the other picture is very striking to me though... it’s a picture of taylor outside with a scrapbook and she’s holding it open to a photo that was taken where she was standing... in the photo she is standing on pavement... if you zoom into the picture closely, you see that the picture in the scrapbook shows taylor as a child standing on the pavement and in the picture the pavement is covered in.....sidewalk chalk.......

ok you probably know where i’m going next... back to why she disappeared... in why she disappeared she says “When she fell, she fell apart. Cracked her bones on the pavement she once decorated as a child with sidewalk chalk” once again, this poem comes into play... this nostalgic picture brings us right back into the why she disappeared poem which ends with the word alive

5. why she disappeared video:

when you watch the why she disappeared video, you notice that taylor is actually wearing a floral dress... i can’t tell for sure but they might be forget me nots which connects back to when she was wearing the forget me not shirt in her scrabble picture (and the five holed fence picture but we won’t go there) where she says “let the games BEGIN” which was the first obvious hint at ts7... forget me nots are known to symbolize remembrance which further hints at the nostalgic vibes

the whole video is backwards... why? here are some ideas... in the nostalgic picture with the scrapbook she captions it “take me home” perhaps the backwards video is hinting at the nostalgic feeling of going back in time and reliving her past

another possible idea could be that it symbolizes that she is literally going back to before reputation, before the darkness.... now that she has killed her reputation she is ready to go back to what she was working on before the kimye drama, aka ts5.5.... this would mean that she used reputation to address these issues and kill her reputation and now she can move on (or should i say step into the daylight and let it go) and get back to what she was working on before...

**as you can see, the why she disappeared video seems to play a HUGE part in ts7 and i think that it is a VERY important clue that we have overlooked

in lesson 7, which is bound to be important because this is the 7th album, taylor says “We have to live bravely in order to truly feel alive, and that means not being ruled by our greatest fears”

once again this is the 7TH lesson and she says in order to truly feel alive which, first of all, brings back the truly alive from the why she disappeared poem and it also shows how she is not just alive, but she is truly alive because of the death of her reputation *gasp*

🚨OVERALL CONNECTION🚨

if taylor knew what she wanted to do after 1989, she was definitely hinting at it in the foreword by saying “and as a result... coming alive” and this implies that she felt alive after 1989 was finished and that could have been the title of her next album... however, then there was drama and as a result... resputation... she used reputation to address all the drama and to “kill” her reputation... she published the poem why she disappeared along with reputation which could likely be a transition into her next album... she hints at nostalgic vibes in the poem and the video has a brighter color scheme too it, but not too bright... the video goes backwards, perhaps it is leading her to where she started before reputation, only this time she doesn’t just feel alive, she feels truly alive... she says at the very end of the poem “and in the death of her reputation, she felt truly alive” and this is the perfect transition back into ts5.5 / ts7 which would be called alive... this would also explain the netflix credits because why she disappeared (whent taylor feels truly alive would be the sequel to ts7 (or ts5.5) which will be called...

blue hydrangeas and coltrane in the air - kang nara was born to two parents she both adores and despises in the same breath. her father: a real estate investor, and her mother: a prominent art dealer. old money - they say she is - but she had never cared for status as a child.

her father’s love was strong - albeit hardly at home - and her mother had laughter pressed into sunlight. childhood (filled with cashmere and lilac fumes) was warm but fleeting. and before long she was sent overseas.

all nighters and terrible instant coffee - the world clicked into place when she found her passion in college. she left new york, returning home with a degree in fashion and an internship under her belt.

instead of starting her own brand, she found herself sucked into seoul’s social scene, attending numerous charity events, galas and openings (how her heart would soar in glamour!).

image is everything - ( it’s an illusion. it’s all a game) and social media fame followed as she constructed herself perfection. hence began her rise; now a socialite and style queen. she is a familiar face at fashion week and works every now and then in editorial styling.

dedicated to her work, nara always puts her all into a project if she believes in it. is incredibly attentive to details and determined to execute her vision perfectly.

is a social butterfly, but finds it hard to cross the wall guarding her heart. a lover of the arts since young, she is one of hoft’s donors, an ardent supporter, and can always be found supporting up-and-coming artists.

one fateful (or rather, unfortunate) evening, she found herself drunkenly enamoured with a dark haired stranger, sharing more than words as they made their way to his hotel room. but they never saw the flashes and lenses pointed their way.

nara dangles a bare foot from the balcony, a glass of liquid sin in hand, red-soled heels abandoned. the chatter and buzz from inside seeps into the open air (like the scent of jasmine flowers she loves so much), tainting it with muted excitement and the sense of beginnings. she turns, back to the balcony railing as she downs her glass in one go, gaze flittering to the occasion inside. new paintings adorn the familiar walls of hoft, portraits’ eyes following the moves of new and old guests alike. her gaze, however, is fixed to one figure who had suddenly became her other half.

this world is filled with saints and sinners ( wolf eats wolf, darling ), and there are those who hide behind fendi fur coats and shades of red lipstick. perhaps she is no different - the world lay before her for her choosing, and she had stuck by vanity’s side for selfish gains. yet here she is hiding away from the crowds ( oh reprieve, how utterly out of character for her! ), avoiding the same prying questions and congratulations thrown her way. the ring sits heavy on her finger - foreign and unfamiliar - unwelcome like the lick of a ruler on bare wrist. it became monotonous to hold the same fake smile, repeat the same gratitude… yet in this world where image is everything… the unfortunate union did play to her advantage just as her father predicted ( & not only for her ).

she finds herself slipping back inside, heels clicking against the floor as she makes her way through the eclectic crowd. sungjoon stands next to the canapés and champagne, conversing with ladies in leather and vintage dior - she, the very image of casual grace as she strides to his side, slipping her hand into his, a practised smile curving red lips. “enjoying yourself?” she murmurs, vowels soft like a caress.

“behave,” sungjoon hisses beneath his breath as she presses a kiss to his cheek, too close for comfort.

“i am. everyone’s watching,” she says through clenched teeth, diamond ring glinting in the light. she draws away, grinning and speaks to him with all the sweetness in the world ( like honeycombs, liquid gold and infinite tenderness, like everything she ever wanted but couldn’t have ), “let’s go home baby.” only he could hear the arsenic laced beneath.

September 14, 2018: A Secret Wedding (?!)

Two months after their whirlwind engagement, Jailey have reportedly tied the knot. A “religious source” close to the couple confirmed to PEOPLE that on Thursday, the singer and model “went ahead and did it without listening to anyone.”

Wait… do does this mean we won’t get to gush over photographs of Baldwin in a wedding dress? Not quite: the source also confirmed to the outlet that the newlyweds will have a formal religious ceremony and celebration with friends and family. “They’re going to have a big blowout, in front of God and everyone they love.”

February 7, 2019: The Vogue Tell-All Interview

Four months later, Mr. and Mrs. Bieber appear together on the cover of Vogue‘s March 2019 issue, and in their joint interview, pull back the curtain on their holy matrimony. “The thing is, marriage is very hard,” Hailey said, “that is the sentence you should lead with. It’s really effing hard.”

The article goes on to reveal that when the pair reconnected in June, Justin was more than a year into a self-imposed tenure of celibacy, working though what he calls “a legitimate problem with sheex.”

“He doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff,” Justin explains. “He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result.”

Justin and Hailey were saving themselves for marriage—and thankfully, they didn’t have to wait long. The interviewer implies that sex was one of the reasons the duo rushed to the alter back in September. The other reason? “When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life. I was like, Holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.”

April 1, 2019: The Instagrammed Sonogram

Around 4 p.m. ETA, Justin shared a caption-less photo of an ultrasound to his Instagram feed, leading the internet to believe he and Hailey are expecting their first child. A few minutes later, he followed up with an image of Hailey in the doctor’s office, cupping her stomach, with the caption: “if U thought it was an April fools.”

OK so we know that they’re already legally married however Hailey and Justin are ticking off all traditions for their upcoming wedding (which will be happening on September 30 at South Carolina’s Montage Palmetto Bluff hotel). We’re pretty sure he was joking. But honestly at this point we have no idea.

September 27, 2019: The Biebers Anger Hotel Guests

The Biebers’ aren’t making any friends with this wedding, apparently. Guests at the Montage Palmetto Bluff hotel were advised that they can not use the spa, one of the main pools and a restaurant for 48 hours beginning from midday Sunday until midday Tuesday.  Per TMZ, guests have been offered refunds, upgrades and free meals as a result of the inconvenience. The word “LIVID” was used. Intense.

September 14, 2018: A Secret Wedding (?!)

Two months after their whirlwind engagement, Jailey have reportedly tied the knot. A “religious source” close to the couple confirmed to PEOPLE that on Thursday, the singer and model “went ahead and did it without listening to anyone.”

Wait… do does this mean we won’t get to gush over photographs of Baldwin in a wedding dress? Not quite: the source also confirmed to the outlet that the newlyweds will have a formal religious ceremony and celebration with friends and family. “They’re going to have a big blowout, in front of God and everyone they love.”

And, before you go rushing to conclusions about why the young love birds rushed the the altar, hear this: multiple sources have told TMZ that “100% she’s not pregnant.” I guess true love can make you do crazy things?!

February 7, 2019: The Vogue Tell-All Interview

Four months later, Mr. and Mrs. Bieber appear together on the cover of Vogue‘s March 2019 issue, and in their joint interview, pull back the curtain on their holy matrimony. “The thing is, marriage is very hard,” Hailey said, “that is the sentence you should lead with. It’s really effing hard.”

The article goes on to reveal that when the pair reconnected in June, Justin was more than a year into a self-imposed tenure of celibacy, working though what he calls “a legitimate problem with sex.”

“He doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff,” Justin explains. “He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result.”

Justin and Hailey were saving themselves for marriage—and thankfully, they didn’t have to wait long. The interviewer implies that sex was one of the reasons the duo rushed to the alter back in September. The other reason? “When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life. I was like, Holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.”

The table was laden with a meticulously presented smorgasbord of meats, platters and desserts. The record player was at the ready, and the clock struck three; it was the ‘Cocktail Hour’. Well… at least in one imaginative installation, dreamed up (and carefully crocheted over hundreds of hours!!) by Victorian artist Trevor Smith.

The industrious maker’s largest scale exhibition to date serves up 45 technically astounding works, curated on a heart-warming, ‘retro-domestic theme’ with a humorous edge. Drawing from the simpler days of the 50s, 60s and 70s, the Portland-based artist typically creates his sculptures after his day working at the local shire council, while watching 1970s Australian films and series. ‘I have always been interested in nostalgia, stories, moments in time, people in the news,’ he begins. ‘These works have been influenced by childhood, family life and by images from childhood – what was on TV or in magazines. The food sculptures are a throwback to the advertisements in women’s magazines and the brightly coloured images in old cookbooks.’

Trevor picked up crochet early on, and has spent decades perfecting and experimenting with its virtually limit-less applications. ‘My mother was a talented craftswoman and I was always shadowing her, wanting to be doing what she was doing,’ recalls the maker, whose first projects were dolls clothes for younger cousins and baby blankets for family friends. He predominantly uses pure wool and incorporates foam rubber, polystyrene, foamcor and wire to create his base forms.

Quite a creative networker, and not afraid to cover some mileage, Trevor connected with quirky textile artist Kristen Fredericks through mutual friends, and the pair went on to exhibit together at the biennial Nati Frinj in Natimuk in Western Victoria. Trevor had also long been a follower and fan of insta-famous crafter Chilly Philly, and jumped at the opportunity when Kirsten approached Michael Reid Gallery, securing a group show for the trio last year. Trevor’s ‘Cocktail hour’ marks his first solo offering at the same gallery!

Those massive Sketchers with the light-up soles that your little sister used to wear to her friends’ birthday parties may have been banished to the fancy dress box more than a decade ago, but here in 2017, they’re a bona fide fashion commodity.

The thing is, fashion comes in cycles, and given that we’ve just had several years of minimalism and slim-fit, understated everything, it was only a matter of time until OTT chunkiness prevailed, whether you like it or not.

This sartorial turning point has paved the way for some truly horrific trainers. So, sit down and keep your sick bag at the ready, while we remind you of some of the worst from the past 12 months.

The great thing about Vans is that you just cannot go wrong with them. They’re cheap, simple, timeless and clean. However, hypebeast-favourite, Fear Of God, was seemingly determined this year to achieve the impossible make the Californian stompers unwearable, and so came up with this hideous rendition. Bravo.

Fila Disruptor

Fila usually does a nice line in retro sportswear, but this has to go down as a clunking misstep. Sporty Spice would probably have been all over these monstrosities about 20 years ago, and if that’s not enough to put you off then we’re not sure what will be.

Nobody likes rats. They’re rodents, carriers of disease and, let’s face it, they don’t exactly look cute. Presumably that’s why Kanye named his latest footwear abomination after one.

If you love the socks and sandals vibe, but consider yourself a bit of a sneakerhead you’re probably fed up with the lack of satisfactory footwear options available to you. Luckily, Adidas has the answer, a meshed mash-up between the ugly trainer trend and something you’d find on a market stall.

the change in scenery wasn’t unwelcomed, but it did take sungjoon a little longer than expected –– to settle in, to knock apart old habits. his mother spoke words of promises, of a fresh and better beginning, and this was what he would remember. his stepfather was a nice man albeit a tad withdrawn from personal relations.

he was (barely) remembered as the reticent kid through high school, always seated alone at the back of every class. they were his only friends, only companions that made tedious days tolerable.

graduation, military service and college –– distance was inevitable and contact was at the minimal, with everyone moving onto different trajectories, and him moving to another country.

art school wasn’t unexpected, considering his forte for sieving through the seemingly mundane and common for something that had potential to be the next trend-setter. grades and (what little of his then) portfolio worked in his favour to land him in a prestigious school in london.

the competitiveness within the curriculum unearthed him, yanking old habits by the roots and planting unfamiliarities. gone was the boy who’d always been meek and hesitant with speaking his mind, and in its place was someone unforgiving, ruthless, and with a tendency to burn through his short temper fuse.

the internship with vogue in his last year of college kickstarted his career with an offer upon graduation. and he’d soon come to realize that there was absolutely no space for contemplation, any moment of soft-heartedness could have him thrown under the bus instead.

moving onto grazia was by choice –– surviving in and adapting to new environments were never really much of a problem. moving back to korea, though, was by chance. sooyoung’s untimely death had shaken him to the core, so much so that what was meant to be a brief trip back for the funeral ended up as a prolonged stay.

wanting to pick up where she’d left off, accomplish what she’d planned to, he accepted an offer shortly after and began work as a production manager in one of south korea’s most prestigious fashion publication, COMPLEX. three years later he was promoted as the creative director and had been in the position since. life was what he’d begun to know it to be: tedious routines and grooves, working in tandem as gears in a cut-throat industry.

things appeared to be on track, right up till his ill-fated meeting with nara. for all thirty-two years of his life, he’d never met someone who’d grated his nerves in all the wrong ways possible. with his stepfather’s career switch from a businessman to running a campaign for the office, everyone remotely related to him was trapped under a microscope.

the marriage wasn’t so much romance than it was terms and conditions marked out in black and white, and all of a sudden words of congratulations had never appeared this dreary and meaningless.

( I. ) LESSON ONE: two beginnings.

the redacted: shabby walls, air heavy and congested, burnt out cigarette stubs hidden in every nook and cranny of the apartment –– responsible for the residual and suffocating scent of smoke, empty cans stacked in a corner with no order whatsoever, cold and clammy hands that brushed against his albeit rarely, deadweight like winter was trapped within, hushed whispers that were probably not meant to be heard (he couldn’t understand what they were talking about anyway), sullen eyes holding more than he could comprehend. the replacement: a fresh coat of paint, polished jade and wood embellishing shelves, their voices echoed within spaces (too much of it), unfamiliar hands with a different kind of warmth, tranquility like fresh spring — promising albeit a tad distant, sense of normalcy reconstructed and years of childhood redefined.

( II. ) LESSON TWO: blessing in disguise

––– in a year’s time, he’d forgotten how his father looked. in two years’ time, he’d forgotten the warmth of his father’s hand, how the rough creases used to rub his palms and cheeks as though in unspoken apologies. –––

his stepfather was very much a nice man, just a tad too withdrawn from anything too close to heart. having been sloughing through years of business management and socialising on a corporate basis, he had simply never gotten out of playing the ideal businessman role enough to indulge and engage in the ways of a father. joon liked him –– the man had his heart in the right places but had never lifted the barriers of his work enough for joon to be completely comfortable with him.

nonetheless, the simplicity of things sat well with sungjoon; he reckoned this could’ve ended up much worse.

( III. ) LESSON THREE: patterns

“c’mon, i promise i’ll stop asking if you come with us once, just once, please? they’re nice, i promise, hm?”

high school was characterised simply with the same routine of: books, exams, late nights, and repeat. he was (barely) remembered and spoken of, always the same reticent kid seated in the same corner of the library and always alone. they were (she was) his only companions that made tedious days tolerable, only friends that filled lonesome school years with something memorable.

sooyoung was amiable, warm, outspoken, humorous and everything he wasn’t. her inherent ability to effortlessly coax him into just about everything and anything was frustrating to say the least, yet most of the time he found the results to be tolerably satisfactory and at times, rewarding.

it was one too many late nights spent in empty classrooms and the art room, the occasional chanced glances that he could’ve sworn were not wholly just coincidental. she’d never asked, but he’d always walked her home afterwards, hands in his pockets and heart remaining in his own chest, beating, beating, waiting.

the tool in mind worked faster than the hand, always steps ahead with what he’d attempted to translate into actuality, in which encapsulated unvoiced words. coherency and sanity were found in the simplest of sketches and varying intensity of strokes, shifting his mind into an ideal state of tranquility, in between consciousness.

it was therapeutic: the seeking and creation of patterns, seeing things neatly arranged and categorised in a way that few others could echo with. in these lands that he’d created for himself ( and occasionally for an audience ) — projected from a fraction of reality, fantasised and malleable, he learnt to find comfort in solitude.

( IV. ) LESSON FOUR: wolves without teeth

what had begun as an interest throughout his high school days had grown to become a steering force, directing him onto this trajectory that he’d adamantly embarked on despite his stepfather’s initial wishes of a business major.

college was far from home and cold, and he was alone once again.

trust didn’t come easy in an industry that gave little to no room for mistakes and hesitation. the ebb and flow of things rinsed out the outdated and slow, and he had to learn fast. a sticky situation with a fellow intern was resolved with the immediate termination of the other’s contract. sungjoon had justified it as such: it was the right thing to do when one’s idea was on the verge of being plagiarised, the only thing to do. perhaps he could understand where the other was coming from, but as the field expanded, it had in place this bottleneck filter that retained only the minority, the cream of the crop, and the only direction sungjoon knew was up.

––– savagery was inevitable; it was fangs kept hidden from plain sight until the right moment, always a game of waiting for the right timing, and finding the perfect opportunity to strike. –––

( V. ) LESSON FIVE: the hardest part about you leaving is that i lost all the words i had to say

in place of the usual messages, this particular one was succinct.

date: xx/xx/xx venue: xxx, seoul attire: formal suit

it hadn’t wholly sunken into his head yet, not even when he boarded the flight back to seoul. he’d been expecting to hear from her, from them, but not like that.

silence reigned in a way that it’d tuned out the mourning and the tears. words of condolences were ready on the tongue, but were never spoken –– he couldn’t. a neat little frame with a photo that was likely to be taken recently, he mused at how time had been kind of her as though she was still seventeen. for the longest time he stayed in front of it, wordlessly, knees sore and chest heavy; as though he was still seventeen, still the same boy who’d always been waiting, waiting, waiting for her to lift the silence for the both of them ( and his heart along with it ).

resigning from grazia for an extended stay in korea, the following months were spent in absolute agony, dwelling on the uncertainties and the could-have-beens. though if there was something he could do fairly well, it’d be to translate negativity into motivation –– wanting to pick up where she’d left off, accomplish what she’d planned to but couldn’t.

spring, 2012: he moved back to korea and officially commenced employment with complex.

( VI. ) LESSON SIX: another chapter, a different beginning

a seemingly unrelated career switch by his stepfather, had an unpredicted implication of sort on sungjoon. having a member of the family run a campaign for the office meant that everyone remotely related would be trapped under a microscope. the media and opposition were more than prepared to magnify any bit of flaws that could possibly taint the campaigns and effectively swayed the voters’ minds to their favour.

an almost hook-up, booze-fused words with the heavy, bitter taste of regret on his tongue. granted, she was one of the most stunning women he’d ever met and she tasted of cherries and rum with a tinge of honey; granted, alcohol and a lightened mood had lowered his inhibitions enough for words to run loose, unguarded, unfiltered; granted, he could’ve apologised but he refused to compromise his own standards. in his defence, he’d thought that’d be the last of it ( of her, of them ).

they were but a product to be exchanged, manipulated; chess pieces placed rather strategically such that there was meant to have two winners. it wasn’t romance as overly depicted by the media –– it was terms and conditions in black and white and a deal meant to benefit both parties.

and all of a sudden, words of congratulations had never appeared this dreary and meaningless.

an old soul, jiae’s loneliness is only made more profound by a mother with touches too fleeting to be warm, and a ghost for a father who leaves before she’s born. with a mother more in love with her ex than her own daughter, jiae learns of heartbreak at an early age.

running is her only hobby, for a while. running after the imagined picture of her father, running after the attention of her mother. running later turns to jumping. and then to falling. scrapes and bruises - it’s more effective that way.

she learns to stand still when a camera makes its way into her hands. its hoarding moments, from then on. mother, mother, father, father. whose camera is it, really? what does photography mean to you?

her answer lies on 14 hour flight to new york - an art university, overseas. she stretches her so-called passion to the limits in a foreign city - but the lights are the same, the people are the same - it solidifies.

it’s back to running, she thinks, but in a better way. dreams, passion, work - it all starts to make sense. and with every click of the shutter, she’s one step closer to finding herself. but it’s good. it feels good.

remember how things were the same? it seems loneliness applies, too, no matter how many filters or selective color is applied. she did this for her father. she did this for her mother. she did this for herself? or is she delusional?

doubt creeps its way in, and she barely lasts two years out of school before she’s back to seoul.

but she’s good at running. away from things. and she can take pictures.

work seems more like a distraction. she molds people for a living, molds herself to them in return.

complex seems different, though. not better, but different. less glitz, less glam, more chic. takes her back to her roots. hidden artists of seoul. she sees a spark and follows it.

From New York to Seoul, you’ve been pursuing photography for years now. Has photography always been your passion? How did you get your start?

Not always, but photography has been a passion of mine for a while now, yes. I actually started taking pictures when I was a teenager, during the summer in my first year of high school. That period of time has become a photograph of its own in my mind – I remember it very vividly. My mother gifted me one of those cheap digital cameras one night - the plastic ones. The pictures I took – they weren’t very good, naturally. They were dark and grainy, but I was obsessed with the new power I held in my hands. All throughout that night, and throughout high school and university, I never stopped capturing the moments around me.

jiae? how many times have i told you not to wait up for me?

sorry, eomma.

you don’t sound sorry at all. she smiles and reaches out to smooth down jiae’s hair. well, you chose a good night because… eomma has a gift for you.

she hands jiae a small, brown gift bag made of paper. jiae looks at it curiously before taking it from her mother’s hands.

a camera? she asks slowly, and lays it flat on her palm. this might as well be the first time she’s ever seen a camera - they’ve never taken pictures before. does eomma like taking pictures?

eomma laughs lightly and tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. she looks down, almost bashfully and says, ah… no. not really. i’m not very good at it. but your father was.

jiae perks up at this. appa?

yes. i was just browsing when i saw this and… i felt so nostalgic. your father would’ve stopped and read every label on the back. they’re just these cheap things but… he would’ve loved them. i know he would. so i thought… since i could never see the world from his eyes, maybe i could give you the chance to do so… ah! listen to your mother ramble on like this. it’s just a silly thought i had-

no! jiae says a little too loudly, and startles her mother out of her reverie. she stares, wide-eyed at jiae who is suddenly cradling the camera between her palms.

i want to try, jiae says. if a camera was a part of appa’s world then… i want to find him. she raises the camera to eye-level, like the people on the street, and aims it at her mother sitting on the front steps, barely illuminated by the porch light.

Being a photo editor, and a photographer in general, what’s your creative process like? How do you keep the ideas flowing? Do you have any advice?

For work, at least, I’d say it’s very collaborative. I’m always conferring with other people. Other photographers, photo editors, and the creative director especially. It’s very much a game of ping pong. Someone shoots out an idea and someone hits it back until we’re all on the same page. It’s very humbling to see your personal thoughts bounced around like that. Which leads me to my first piece of advice, I suppose. Remain true to yourself. Don’t be afraid to stray from what’s conventional. As creative people, it’s easy to get stuck doing what other people want to see. Of course it’s part of the job, but who are you behind the lens? Who are you behind the editorial shoots and the minimalist flat-lays? Focus your lens with intent. Don’t just take pictures of what’s trendy. Have a message, a theme, an aesthetic, have something that’s interesting to you, and run with it.

jiae shrinks as she pads over to where her mother is perched on the couch. she gingerly passes the camera into her mother’s hands and bites her lip as she waits. please don’t make me delete it, she thinks. her mother has been known to cut her off at a moment’s notice. as quick to ire as she is to praise.

eomma tilts her head lightly as she regards the photo with an unreadable expression.

the photo is of her, face turned to the window. one leg dangles from the couch, toes barely grazing the white fur of the rug. an elbow rests atop her knee as her hand curls and rests upon her lips. a dark green shawl slips down her shoulders and mingles with the strands of her hair. the scene is illuminated with sunlight.

it’s beautiful, she says finally.

jiae smiles shyly. it’s you who’s beautiful, eomma. all i did was capture it.

eomma turns fully towards her and sits up. that’s not true, jiae. you’re an artist. you take an instant out of time and hold it still. no matter how many photographers there are, no one will see the world the way you do.

she smiles at jiae’s stunned expression.

What do you hope to accomplish in your role as photo editor at COMPLEX?

I very much hope to continue COMPLEX’s goal of giving Seoul’s youth a platform where they can share their work. There’s always been a unique quality about “independent brands,” if you will. It’s what makes them different, and it’s that difference that allows us to do all these interesting things as a magazine. We just put a new spin on your average expectations when it comes to fashion, art and design. Let’s put it this way: try matte instead of gloss, and you might see something you’d never thought of before.

Born Mina Isabelle Son in Palo Alto, California to Korean immigrants Son Minjae and Kang Jihyo. Holds dual U.S. and South Korea citizenship.

Starts ballet lessons at the age of 5, her teacher declares her as a gifted dancer. Passionate and dedicated to her craft, Mina is already at the advanced level by 11 and begins to participate in numerous productions.

When her family moves to Anaheim Hills, she is transferred to a private school where she receives primary and secondary education up until 7th grade.

Scouts by a Korean entertainment company representative during a dance competition when she’s 14. After earning her parents’ approval, she heads to Seoul to start the trainee life.

On the eve of the debut showcase, her manager who is a brotherly figure to her drives her back to the dorm after a late-night practice. The unthinkable happens when a drunk driver runs the red lights and crashes into their car. She survives the crash with severe injuries, but her manager dies on impact.

PTSD makes her unable to continue the path of a singer. She is sent back to the States to rehabilitate. 

Resumes studying at a public high school. Because her personality is more demure and isolated after the accident, often being picked on by peers.

Originally planning to study psychology at University of Southern California, she takes a gap year instead. A fashion styling internship leads her to enroll in FIDM.

Upon her aunt’s recommendation, she relocates to Seoul for the vibrant fashion and art scene. She’s been working and living in the city for almost 2 years now.

Despite her icy and intimidating aura, she’s a lot more easygoing than one would think. At work, she rarely initiates conversation unless it’s work-related.

Track 1. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy

When your parents are busy making their American Dream comes true— one rarely comes home, practically lives in the hospital because of the rigorous cardiothoracic surgery residency; one cruises around town in a white Toyota Corolla, showing houses after houses to prospective buyers— and your older sister thinks she’s too mature to play with a little kid although she’s only two years older, you are used to the solitary at an early age.

Other kids sprints in the playground like a group of wild little monkeys on the loose, Mina much prefers to sit on the bench and observes the scene with a small smile on her pretty face.

Yet the timid girl nature is shed away when she puts on the dance shoes. The meek wallflower transforms into a fairy princess pirouetting and leaping on stage. It’s one of the most joyful and carefree moments of her life.

Track 2. Atlantis Princess

She is never a petulant child, so it surprises her that she is resorting the most immature way—crying and screaming—just to have it her way. Doesn’t that say a lot about how much she wants this? Why can’t her parents see that she belongs to shine on stage instead of being whatever doctor or businesswoman that they want her to be?

Cold war continues to go on for days until her dad finally relents. But not without a condition: finish 7th grade with straight A’s.

They don’t think she can do it, but she proves them wrong.

The girl holes up in the library or her room, not stepping out until she has all the history facts memorized and math equations solved. As the spring beautifully transitions into summer, she triumphantly presents the report card to her dad. As promised, she boards a plane with a luggage and a dream to Seoul three months later.

Track 3. Track Not Found.

Psychotherapist tells her it doesn’t make her a freak to feel what she feels, people develop trauma when they experience a shocking, scary and life-threatening event, like the fatal car crash.

But she is scared to close her eyes to sleep, for she would be taken back to that night when the car spirals out of control and he perishes before her eyes.

Stop blaming yourself! It isn’t your fault! A logical voice screams at her.

Maybe the only way to stops the guilt is to inflict pain on herself, then she won’t feel nothing at all

Oh, how frightening that this thought even crosses her mind.

Track 4. Mean

She doesn’t understand why her parents insist on attending a public high school instead of the one she used to go, her friends are there. At this dreadful school ground, people only see her as an outcast.

It’s all because that she looks as though she’s in a perpetual bad mood, people naturally will be hesitant to approach her. Even when they do, she has a wall built up, unwilling to open up even for a small talk. They find her aloofness standoffish, a group of peers starts to pick on her.

In the beginning, she will fight back, then she quickly realizes that any sort of reaction from her just gives them the satisfaction they are seeking. Silence is golden, she finds. And if there’s one thing she has learned about life, it’s that karma is a top class bitch, every nasty word they throw at her will come back to bite their asses sooner or later.

Track 5. Too Young To Remember

Even though the shadow is destined to follow her for the rest of her life, she has learned to accept and live with it. Many ask her how does she does it? Who is her shrink? Yes, she does have an attentive and highly competent therapist to guide her, ultimately, it’s determination and a newfound purpose that drive her forward.
