Masamune’s eyes had become much more sensitive (and required an even stronger prescription) in his old age, causing him to slowly wake at the first hint of sunlight. Usually he would grumble and throw his blanket over his head - much too tired to be dragging himself out of bed to adjust the curtains - but today he would utilize every waking moment.
Today was special, after all.
He slowly sat up, more bones protesting than he would have liked as his feet touched the cool floor. His movement disturbed the big fluff ball that had been laying beside him, making her stand and stretch at her own sluggish pace. She padded across the mattress to bump her head against Masamune’s arm.
“Being nice today, Sakura?” He asked, scratching her between her white ears. “Or are you just hungry?”
She meowed, making her way into Masamune’s lap and plopping down. She was an old cat now - sixteen years old give or take - and the name had been Masamune’s idea after he and Ritsu found her frightened and hungry on the street. Ritsu treated the name suggestion like a bad joke, but it just ended up sticking.
Sakura head butted Masamune’s hand as he pet her, quietly purring.
“Ah, are you maybe worried about me? Do you remember what today is?” He asked. “Come on, get up.” He gently nudged her, Sakura not typically enjoying being picked up and manhandled. With enough encouragement, Sakura hopped down from the bed, much more agile than Masamune despite her own elderly status. She took a few steps forward toward the bedroom door before looking behind her shoulder to make sure Masamune was following.
“I’m slow, but I’m coming, don’t rush an old man.” He said with a chuckle, making his way to the small kitchen. He made himself a cup of coffee and got Sakura her food. He didn’t have much of an appetite himself, sipping his hot drink slowly as he watched Sakura eat greedily.
“Now, don’t start expecting me to always wake up this early to give you your food.” Masamune warned and Sakura made some noise that couldn’t quite be classified as a meow with all her chewing mixed in with it. Masamune smiled a bit to himself in amusement, finishing his coffee.
“I’ve got something for you.” He said, opening a specific cabinet that made Sakura’s pupils go wide and her ears stand up straight as her brain alerted her that this was the one that held the treats. She jumped up onto the counter, meowing loudly, making Masamune shush and shoo her. “Have some manners, Sakura.” He scolded playfully, getting out a treat for her as well as a little toy he’d stowed away. He set the treat down first, chuckling as she devoured it. “You’re going to choke.” He warned, but she didn’t pay him any mind.
She licked her lips once she was finished then looked up at Masamune expectantly, waiting to see if she was lucky enough for more.
“Here, since you destroyed your last one.” He said as he gently tossed a small fish shaped toy to her. Sakura latched on to it immediately, biting and kicking with her back legs. She preferred toys she could grab rather than little balls to chase - that took too much energy. Masamune watched her ‘attack’ with affection.
“Happy birthday, Sakura.” He said. Now, he and Ritsu didn’t know if today was actually her birthday - it was unlikely - but today was the day that the two had found her, so it seemed appropriate enough.
With Sakura taken care of, Masamune began to walk out of the kitchen. First he went to a rather expansive bookshelf, very carefully scanning the titles that he and Ritsu had collected over the years for one book in particular and pulling it out once he located it. He then shuffled to stand in front of a simple and private shrine, tending to some of the cherry blossom branches on display he’d gotten the previous day. Sakura followed after a few moments, the fish toy in her mouth as if it were prey she had caught.
“Today isn’t just your birthday, Sakura.” Masamune said, looking down at her when he heard the tinkling of the bell on her collar. She let out a muffled meow around the toy as she looked up toward the flowers and the picture front and center. She knew from past experience that if she tried to jump up there she’d get grabbed, so she stayed put.
Masamune lit a candle, refraining from burning incense as he knew it wasn’t good for his feline friend.
“Happy birthday, Ritsu.” He said, soon kneeling on a cushion, planning on being here for quite a while. Sakura watched him for a few moments before ultimately deciding to curl up next to him, gently dropping her toy between her own front paws.
“I bought a small cake for later. And I have your favorite book here. I thought I’d read it to you. Sakura’s here too, to say happy birthday. She’s more clingy today. I think she’s worried I’m sad.” Masamune scratched her under her chin, Sakura leaning into the touch. “Well, she’s not wrong. I miss you.” Masamune took in a shaking breath, his already terrible vision becoming even more blurry with tears. “I can’t cry and read, though. You’d be mad if I got your favorite book all wet.” He said with a bittersweet laugh, pulling his hand away from Sakura to push his glasses out of the way and rub his eyes. “You’re lucky I love you so much, you know that? Otherwise I’d be royally pissed off that you left me again even though you promised you wouldn’t.” He continued. “I mean, I am pissed off, don’t get me wrong, but I’ll forgive you if you give me the thousands of kisses I’m owed triple fold when we meet again.” He said, sounding entirely too serious about his terms.
The photo of Ritsu just smiled wordlessly, an eternal flush to his cheeks, forever immortalized as a bashful, nervous, but excited groom on his wedding day.
Masamune took another deep breath, realizing he’d just been staring for a few minutes. “Sorry. Don’t mean to be giving you a hard time on your birthday of all days.” He smiled a bit. “I guess I should be giving you thousands of kisses, huh?” He chuckled. “Shouldn’t I, Sakura?” He asked.
Sakura meowed in response, but stayed curled up.
“See, she agrees.” He said, trying to ignore the way his heart grew heavier at the lack of indignant protests and embarrassed denials. “You probably want me to get on with the reading already, huh? It’s not as fun to tease you without you here to yell at me, anyway. One would think you would have mellowed out, but I swear you got worse.” He joked, chuckling softly to himself, his laughter petering out into a sigh. “I’d give anything to hear you call me an idiot again, though.” A brief silence fell over Masamune before he smiled slowly. “Or a pervert.” His laughter returned. “How’d I get so lucky, marrying the cutest man in the world?”
Still no answer, not that Masamune was expecting one. Masamune sighed once more, admiring his husband’s features. “When did we get so old?” He complained. Although many things began to deteriorate the older he got - his eyesight, his strength, his energy - the memories of their youth were still bold in his mind. His heart so clearly recalled the feeling of falling love for the first time - how frightening, unexpected, exciting, and overwhelmingly warm it was. Although their separation had left a deep wound, it healed with time and the scar faded with the many wonderful years he and Ritsu were able to spend together after their reunion.
Now, all that was left was the love that was so haphazardly but sincerely and passionately tended to and grew into something beyond what Masamune ever could have hoped for. Only, the person that love was for was no longer here to share it.
“Mreow?”
Masamune blinked, realizing his tears had overwhelmed him this time and began to fall down his face.
“Sorry, girl. I don’t mean to worry you.” Masamune stroked her back reassuringly. “You miss him too, don’t you?” He added with a sad smile.
It took at least a year for Sakura to stop looking for Ritsu after his passing. Sakura had always preferred Ritsu over Masamune, not that Masamune minded - nor could he blame her. Ritsu was great, after all. She’d get on Ritsu’s side of the bed, sniffing his pillow and laying down, meowing loudly to demand nightly cuddles - a ritual that she and Ritsu became quite settled in after years of companionship (And Ritsu finally learning how to handle and read the body language of a cat). However, her meows were left unanswered. She would look behind Masamune after he’d come home from running errands to see if Ritsu would be following, but he never was. She’d even sit and wait at the front door, meowing over and over again as if her voice could lead Ritsu back home.
Masamune’s grief had been volatile for a long time, even more so during the first year. Sometimes when he saw Sakura sitting and waiting he had to sit himself down on the couch as he became overwhelmed with body jerking sobs, unable to compose himself for hours. Other times he’d snap and tell her to shut up and that Ritsu wasn’t ever coming back. Much more rarely he would sit beside her and pet her head, watching the door with her.
“I think that’s why we get along pretty well.” Masamune said to the cat. “Cause we both love Ritsu.”
“Mreow.”
“Only idiots wouldn’t love him.”
Sakura started to purr and Masamune took that as agreement. He calmed down his tears and straightened out his glasses before he finally opened up the book to start reading out loud. Sakura’s purring quieted down before ceasing all together, her breathing calm and steady as she fell asleep to the sound of his voice.
Masamune continued to read, letting himself get lost enough in the book that he could pretend there was another person leaning against his shoulder and following along with the words.

WEEK DE TAKARIT
@takaritsuweek
Day 2 rain/picnic
Perfect.
Glancing through the lobby windows at the raging storm outside, both men were thinking the same thing. While Ritsu was scathingly sarcastic in his mind, Takano was practically giddy. Thanking wherever deities may have played a part in this blessing, Takano smoothly slipped Ritsus bag off his shoulder and began to briskly walk off with it.
"Hey! What the hell do you think you're doing!" Ritsu whipped away from where he'd hesitated by the main entrance, bristling at Takano's gall.
"Walking to the parking garage, obviously."
"Give me back my bag, I need to catch the train-" Ritsu nearly barreled straight into Takanos chest, as the older man turned to glare down at him.
"Fine. You can take the train, but if you get even the slightest hint of a cold, you'd better be prepared for the consequences." Takano could see Ritsu's determination waver, green eyes darting to the rain pounding outside. They both knew he didn't have an umbrella, and was wearing a coat that was not water-resistant.
"Or…" Takano drawled, "You could accept your boss's generous offer, and get in the car." With a huff, Ritsu gave his answer by stomping past, toward the connected parking garage where Takano's car waited. Satisfied, Takano followed, thinking of what he could cook to tempt Ritsu to stay for dinner. Takano hoped it'd keep raining; after all, it was the best weather for cuddling, and a good meal always made Ritsu less reluctant.
"You're lucky I forgot an umbrella." Ritsu grumbled, sliding into the passenger seat and bucking up as Takano deposited their bags on the back seat.
"I know." Takano rebuffed, taking the opportunity to kiss the brunette's cheek once he'd sat behind the wheel. He smiled when he didn't get shouted at in return.
Takano hoped it'd rain more often.

So I was busy with classes and I’m currently working on my first novel and some short stories and then I was/am abroad (going back in two days!) for the past three weeks and also for the past two months I’ve been deep in a love affair/obsession/special interest with KinnPorsche but I’ve briefly awoken from all these projects for my nostalgic (hehe) fave to participate in TakaRitsu week! @takaritsuweek notice me senpai
Day 1: Cherry Blossoms
Cherry blossoms hold a special place in Ritsu’s heart.
They represent new beginnings, that breath taking moment of youth as a first love ignites with a maiden’s heart.
Or maybe Ritsu just reads too much shoujo manga for his own good
But it’s still one of his favorite scenes, a timeless and simple trope that just makes an audience swoon as the heroine has a chance encounter, a heartfelt confession, or even just a realization. It’s a perfect moment for any high school romance, and those are always one of the most popular chapters.
Were the cherry blossoms in bloom when he fell in love with Saga-Senpai?
But cherry blossoms were always perfect to represent a shift in the story, the signal of a different start, a different time, a different life.
There are no cherry blossoms when he’s transferred to Emerald, there’s no magical moment signaling the start of a new era for him, away from the grasp of his parents.
But it’s not even that time if the year, spring passed and all cherry blossoms long gone, shriveled away with the coming warmth of summer, when he transfers to a new world.
What will the shoujo department here be like, Ritsu had mused on his first day. Will it be a more traditional looking office? Or will they try to capture the spirit of it all with stuffed animals and pink and lace and flowers?
He never gets to learn the answer though, as he quickly finds himself in the most boring looking office in existence in the literature department of all things.
There are no cherry blossoms to be found here, no appreciation for their symbolic meaning, their role in an innocent first love, just eerily relaxed coworkers. Maybe it’s early in the cycle? Books do tend to take a bit longer, so maybe it results in a longer one?
It’s not that Ritsu doesn't love books- he’s always been an avid reader and holds respect for the editors helping works become truly great-but shoujo was his, and it’s been plucked away from him.
It has nothing to do with Saga-senpai, that’d be ridiculous, Ritsu is an adult who’s moved on from his foolish first love.
Kisa might have some fondness for cherry blossoms, given the man’s penchant for editing romance novels, but the others? The chances are slim to none.
His boss Takano, that annoying, gruff man, definitely has no appreciation for cherry blossoms. Ritsu may have been the demon of the shoujo department, but Takano could give him a run for his money with his ruthless cynicism and the way he barks order. He’s awful and insensitive and is actually Saga-senpai and holds this idiotic idea that he’ll make Ritsu love him again with a confession Ritsu definitely didn’t get flustered over.
It was just similar to some of the stuff he’s edited, that’s it!
But despite all that, Ritsu does hold some respect for the man and wants to learn at least something from him. He’s in literature now and Ritsu doesn’t half ass his work, no matter what people would say.
It’s after watching Takano give critics and praise to an author’s manuscript, Ritsu gets the courage to ask the question that’s been lingering in his mind this past week. Between the unexpected department and Saga-senpai being his boss and his boss living next door, he feels like he’s been all over the place, completely out of his depth.
“Takano-san, do you think maybe I could one day be a good literary editor?” Ritsu murmurs. He braces himself for the hard truth. He’s barely even started, how arrogant can he be? Ritsu would be laughed out of the shoujo department if he’d asked this in his first week.
But watching Takano, shadowing him in hopes of figuring out what he’s even supposed to do-Ritsu needs to know if it’s even worth the risk of him trying a completely new department.
Takano stops walking for a second, and turns around to look at him. Ritsu feels like his eyes are glaring into his soul.
“You’re on the right path, Onodera. Stop worrying so much.” Takano says, making a mess of Ritsu’s hair, and then just wandering off like he’s always done these past couple of days after saying something that takes Ritsu completely off guard.
There are no cherry blossoms falling as Takano walks away from him, but all Ritsu can think of at this moment is Takano’s hand ruffling in his hair, making his cheeks grow warm.
Shit.
360 days until Onodera Ritsu falls in love.

I stopped doing my course work to lookup when Takaritsu week was this year, becuase I know it’s sooooon. And I was hoping maybe I could write something this year for it.
I have proceeded to dick around on my phone for another 20 minutes since I found my answer.
I won’t be doing anything except turning in more homework late if I keep this up.
Is this executive dysfunction or just depression?

Takaritsu Day 5 - Heavenly Somebodies (Role Swap)
@takaritsuweek
Masamune sighs as he walks into Onodera Shuppan. He’s finally escaped Shuudansha and his unprofessional supervisor. His first choice for a transfer would have been Marukawa, but this is fine, and a step in the right direction. To be on the safe side, he spent the last few days devouring the publishing house’s Shonen magazine’s latest offerings which were somewhat on the weak side, but that’s fine because he also took detailed notes on each current serial and how they can be improved. He's all set to brave a new manga department.
So why is this idtiotic HR rep telling him he’s been transferred to the Literature department?? Maybe right after college that would have been brilliant, but not after he’s had five years of experience in Shonen manga!

Day 5 Regret/Support
ehehehe this is silly @takaritsuweek
**
“I think the new guy hates me.” Takano Masamune lamented on his living room floor, a beer in hand with his head resting on the table in front of him. He had already downed several cans and was beginning to feel woozy.
“Is this why you asked to hang out? To get drunk and complain about your new underling?” Yokozawa asked with annoyance, nursing his own drink but not nearly as tipsy as his friend. “What’s his name again?”
“Onodera Ritsu.” Takano said, lifting his head to look toward Yokozawa with narrowed eyes, as if offended that his friend forgot.
“Right. And why do you care? And more importantly, why should I care?” Yokozawa asked.
“Because I want him to like me!” Takano exclaimed in frustration.
He’s always more open when he’s drunk, Yokozawa thought, just a little bit amused, but mostly irritated with Takano’s antics. “I still don’t understand why I should care in this situation.”
“Because you’re my friend, you jackass, you’re supposed to support me or whatever…” Takano grumbled, taking another sip of his beer.
“Support you how?” Yokozawa asked. As far as he could tell the only role he could possibly play in this situation was an ear for Takano’s drunk ramblings.
“I don’t know, give me advice or something on how to make him not hate me.” Takano said.
“If he already hates you then that ship has probably sailed. You get on people’s bad sides quickly.” Yokozawa said. “Besides, doesn’t everyone kind of hate their boss? You hate Isaka.”
“Yeah, but he’s annoying and I’m charming and handsome-”
“And humble.” Yokozawa deadpanned. “Why do you want him to like you so bad in the first place?” Yokozawa couldn’t recall a time where Takano put in particular effort with the other members of the Emerald team to get buddy-buddy with them.
Takano, warm and loose from the alcohol and unable to maintain his usual mask of indifference, slowly started to turn red. “I just…well…I like him.” He mumbled, eyes downcast. Onodera Ritsu was captivating, like a flame that never dimmed. He was hard working to a fault, intelligent, determined, considerate, and not to mention absolutely gorgeous. Takano found himself thinking about green a lot more these days. Just as he was about to launch into this list of things he liked about Ritsu (and more), Yokozawa spoke first.
“You can’t be fucking serious. Do you have an honest to God crush on this guy? Are you twelve?”
“Shut up!” Takano snapped defensively. “What? I’m not allowed to like someone?” He demanded.
“You can’t just have a one night stand with one of your editors, that can only result in disaster.” Yokozawa said.
“Who said anything about a one night stand?”
“...You’re joking. You actually want to date this guy?”
“So what if I do? He’s so nice and he’s so pretty…” Takano finished off his beer and set the can aside, about to reach for another one, but Yokozawa smacked his hand away.
“When have you ever seriously dated someone?” Yokozawa asked, incredulous.
“So, I’m banned from dating because I have no serious experience?” Takano huffed.
“No, but do you really think it’s a good idea to pursue some kind of exclusive relationship for the first time with your employee?”
“You’re supposed to be giving me advice, not trying to talk me out of it.”
“I am giving you advice, you just don’t like it. Don’t do this, Masamune. If the guy hates you, he hates you. Just forget about it.” Yokozawa said.
Takano scowled at that.
As if he’d let go of it that easily.
-
The next morning Takano started to regret the amount of beer he’d had. It took him quite a few drinks to get drunk and he hadn’t drank that much in a while. So, the headache he had woken up to was a nice little reminder that he wasn’t a college student doing bar crawls anymore.
He showered, took some over the counter medicine for the ache, and hoped he didn’t look as disheveled as he felt as he left his apartment. He started to head down the hallway, surprised to see a familiar figure not that far ahead of him also walking toward the elevator.
“Onodera..?”
Ritsu turned when hearing his name, his eyes widening and face paling slightly - as though Takano were a poltergeist rather than a person.
“T-Takano-san? W-What are you doing here?”
“I live here.”
“You…live…here?” Ritsu echoed
“Yeah, apartment 1201.” Takano said.
“Oh. W-What a small world.” Ritsu started to force laughter, fidgeting nervously. “I live in apartment 1202. N-Not that I’m stalking you or anything, it’s a total coincidence! I would never move in next door to you on purpose!” Ritsu exclaimed.
Damn, okay, guess I’m a shitty boss and a shitty neighbor, Takano thought. “I see. Well, I had a friend over last night. I hope we didn’t disturb you at all.” He said.
“Oh, no, not at all!” Ritsu assured. “B-But, we should get going. We don’t want to be late!” Ritsu laughed fakely once more before rushing toward the elevator and pressing the button several times. Takano followed, his eyes raking over the back of Ritsu’s tense form as they waited for the elevator. He supposed it was common to be nervous around your boss, but Takano wished Ritsu could at least make eye contact with him.
Once the doors dinged and opened up, they both stepped inside. Ritsu gave Takano several side glances, shifting from foot to foot as though he could not stand still before he spoke up. “Y-You know what? I think maybe I’ll take the stairs! I-I need to get my steps in when I can!” Ritsu said in a voice that was way too cheerful before he left the elevator just as the doors were starting to close, making them swing back open.
Takano opened his mouth as if to protest, but he didn’t really have the right to demand that Ritsu ride the elevator with him. I guess he doesn’t want to be stuck in here with me.
“S-See you at work, Takano-san.” Ritsu said, going to sprint off before he suddenly tripped and fell over his own feet, landing on the floor.
“Onodera?!” Takano exclaimed in concern, stepping out of the elevator to help him stand up. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine!” Ritsu insisted immediately, standing up on his own, not even looking toward the hand that had been outstretched to assist him. He rushed off toward the stairs, quickly disappearing.
Takano let out a sigh, hearing the elevator close behind him.
He definitely hates me, Takano thought as he pressed the button once more, waiting for the doors to open back up. That usually wasn’t such a problem for Takano. Like Yokozawa said last night, he got on people’s bad sides easily. Takano was quite used to people disliking him and for the most part was indifferent to it. So, he had never tried to get someone who hated him to change their mind.
I guess I’ll have to start small.
-
“What are you gonna get?”
Ritsu had been debating on what to get from the vending machine in the break room, but nearly jumped out of his skin when hearing a deep voice come from behind him. He spun around, surprised to find Takano standing so close to him. Ritsu went to take a step back, but remembered that the vending machine was there and managed to barely resist his body’s instinct to move away.
“Oh, uh, p-probably just some coffee…” Ritsu answered, avoiding looking at Takano directly. All morning Ritsu had been evading Takano’s gaze. There were a couple times where Takano thought he might have caught Ritsu staring, but Ritsu would look away so quickly that Takano couldn’t determine if he had been glaring with disdain or not.
“Did you not sleep well last night?” Takano asked, getting some money out. “You’ve gotta make sure to take care of yourself. You always work so hard, you have to rest sometimes too.”
“I-I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself, Takano-san, you don’t have to worry about me.” Ritsu said, turning a little pink as he stepped out of the way to let Takano use the vending machine first.
Damn it, did I offend him? Takano wondered as he fed his money into the machine before getting a can of coffee for Ritsu. “Here.” He held it out toward him after retrieving it.
“...h-huh?”
“It’s for you. You said you wanted coffee, right?” Takano said.
“Oh, you don’t have to do that.” Ritsu denied quickly.
“Consider it a late welcome gift. Come on, it’s just coffee.” Takano insisted.
Ritsu hesitated before slowly taking the coffee, not wanting to be rude by denying too fiercely. “Um, thank you.”
“No problem.” Takano said, hoping that this interaction could potentially lead to a conversation with Ritsu that was non-work related. “Do you-”
“I should probably get back to my desk.” Ritsu said quickly, turning away from Takano. “Thank you again for the coffee, I really appreciate it, I’ll get yours next time.” He added as he scampered away.
Takano’s shoulders slumped with defeat before he turned toward the vending machine to get his own coffee. Try and try again, I guess, he told himself, leisurely strolling back toward the Emerald department as he sipped on his caffeinated beverage.
“Eh, Ricchan, are you feeling alright? Your face is really red…” Takano heard Kisa ask as he came back.
“I-I’m fine!” Ritsu said immediately.
“Oi, you’re not sick, are you?” Takano asked, going over to stand next to Ritsu, trying to get a good look at him.
“Of course not, I’m perfectly healthy, promise!” Ritsu said, facing forward to try to busy himself with his work.
“...Hmph. Fine. Let me know if that changes.” Takano said, giving Ritsu a pat on the shoulder as he walked by and taking notice of the way he immediately tensed up at the touch. I’ll have to keep a closer eye on him, I don’t think he would say anything even if he was feeling unwell, Takano thought as he sat back down at his desk.
“Ricchan, did your face get even redder?”
“Y-You’re imagining things, Kisa-san!”
-
“Onodera, you should wrap it up if you want to make the last train.” Takano said, having finished packing up his own things to head home for the night.
“I-oh-but…” Ritsu trailed off, clearly unwilling to depart.
“No ‘buts’. Whatever you’re working on now can wait till tomorrow. Come on.” Takano insisted.
“I-I’ll leave soon, I promise.” Ritsu said. “Have a good night, Takano-san.”
He’s trying to avoid leaving with me, Takano thought with a huff, but he wasn’t giving up yet. “Well, I can’t let the noob stay even later than me.” He said. “So, I guess I’ll just have to wait for you to finish.”
“What? No! Y-You absolutely do not have to do that.” Ritsu said. “Please, go home and relax for the rest of the evening.”
“You might put me out of my job if I let you work harder than me.” Takano said, only teasing, though Ritsu spluttered at the implication.
“I-I would never-!”
“I know.” Takano said, smirking a bit. “I’m just messing with you.” He’s so cute, Takano thought with a quiet, but wistful sigh. “Let’s go home. Since we found out we’re neighbors we have to look out for each other, right?” He said.
Ritsu cringed a bit at that reminder. “I’m really sorry if it makes you uncomfortable that we live next door to one another, I had no idea you lived in that building, if I did I wouldn’t have-”
“It doesn’t make me uncomfortable.” Takano interrupted. “But the thought of you pulling an all nighter in this office does. So, let’s go.”
Ritsu still took a good few moments of consideration before he finally started to get ready to leave. Takano smiled a little in triumph.
“I’m guessing you haven’t had anything to eat for dinner yet?” Takano asked as they started to make their way toward the elevator.
Ritsu seemed to get more nervous with every step they took. “Ah, n-no, I haven’t.”
“Do you have anything to eat at your house?” Takano asked.
“I-I was probably going to stop in some twenty four hour convenience store on the way home and get something to eat…” Ritsu admitted.
Takano gave a disapproving click of his tongue. “Why don’t I make you something instead? I’m gonna be cooking for myself anyway and if you’re already right next door…”
“W-What?” Ritsu choked out. “N-NO - I mean - that would - that’s just too much. I couldn’t ask you to do something like that.” He said as they stood in front of the elevator. “Um, you know, I-I think maybe I’ll take the stairs again-”
“Do you have some kind of problem with me?” Takano asked, his impatience overriding his logic and forcing him to state the question that had been bugging him since Ritsu’s arrival.
“Huh? No, of course I don’t-” The elevator opened and Takano grabbed Ritsu’s arm, pulling him inside with him and pressing the ‘close door’ button. “T-Takano-san, wait a second!”
“Why do you avoid me so much if there’s no issue?” Takano asked and let him go once the doors shut.
“I’m not avoiding you.” Ritsu denied.
“Even right now you’re refusing to look right at me.” Takano said. “Have I done something to offend you? Or are you that nervous around me as boss and subordinate?”
“Um, I just…”
“I’m not trying to make you uncomfortable or anything, but I want us to be able to get along.” Takano continued.
“Well - the thing is-”
“And I know I can be kind of abrasive…okay, let’s be real, I can be kind of an asshole, so if I put my foot in my mouth at some point I’m sorry-”
“Takano-san-”
“So if we could somehow start over-”
“I like you!”
The elevator doors opened up to the lobby, Takano staring at Ritsu in surprise while Ritsu’s face flooded with immediate regret.
“You…like m-”
“I’m so sorry, please forget I said that!” Ritsu, in a scene that comically mirrored this morning, sprinted out of the elevator only to trip and fall over his own feet for the second time that day.
“Christ, you were not built for running. Stop it before you kill yourself.” Takano said, offering a hand.
Ritsu once again could not bring himself to accept Takano’s help, too entrenched in his own shame. “I’m really sorry, Takano-san…” He apologized again as he stood up.
“Sorry for what?”
“D-Don’t make me say it again!” Ritsu said, beginning to leave the building, though Takano followed close behind.
“What? So, you’re sorry for liking me?” Takano asked.
“...Yes.” Ritsu answered miserably, picking up his walking speed in an attempt to get away, but Takano grabbed his hand - half to make sure Ritsu wouldn’t leave and half to make sure Ritsu didn’t fall on his face trying to run again.
“Don’t be sorry for that, idiot.” Takano said as he kept up with him.
Ritsu frowned, furrowing his eyebrows. “I’m not a-”
“I like you too.” Takano said. “I want to take you out on a date.”
Ritsu’s fast paced footsteps came to a halt. “W-What?”
“I. Want. To. Date. You.” Takano said. “Was that clear enough?”
“I - you - b-but, you’re my boss.” Ritsu protested, glancing around nervously, thankful that it was late enough for others to not be nearby.
“So? You like me, I like you, nothing else matters besides that.” Takano said.
“You make things sound so simple…” Ritsu said with a disheartened laugh. “We’re also both men.” He pointed out.
“And yet that didn’t stop us from liking each other.”
“This is about more than us liking each other, Takano-san, i-it’s about our jobs, our families, our friends-”
“Ritsu,” Takano interrupted, Ritsu nearly choking on his own words at the sound of his given name, “we like each other. Can’t we just start there? Please? Wouldn’t it be a waste not to give this a chance?” He asked.
Ritsu took in a deep breath, releasing it in a loud sigh as he looked away from Takano, carefully weighing his words. The last time Ritsu could recall feeling even remotely similar to this was way back in high school. He had become infatuated with an upperclassman, but had never built up the courage to confess. If he didn’t pursue this then…wouldn’t he just be letting another opportunity at love slip by?
L-Love?! Ritsu was a little startled by his own thoughts. He didn’t love Takano, that would be ridiculous…at least…he didn’t love him yet. But maybe he could.
“...Okay.”
“Okay?” Takano echoed before he fully processed the response. “Okay. Okay!” He smiled, letting go of Ritsu’s hand to opt for slinging an arm around his shoulder. “Come on, we should really hurry if we’re gonna catch the train. And then we can have our first date at my place. I’ll make you dinner.”
“All I really want to do is go to bed, so it better be amazing.” Ritsu sighed, feeling exhausted after a full day of work followed by an emotional rollercoaster. “A-And let go of me, seriously, we’re still in public.” He protested.
Takano chuckled. “I promise, I’ll impress you.” He said, giving him a squeeze instead of letting him go.
Turns out the new guy didn’t hate him at all.

Here, take this @takaritsuweek and fellow degenerates
~~Hands you my slimy words for takarit week day 1, Cherry Blossom/Stalker~~
Stepping out of the Marukawa lobby, the sun glinted off neighboring office buildings, the trajectory ending with it stabbing directly into his eyes. It seemed just as determined to be on his bad side as Takano had been all day. Despite how early in the cycle it was, the demon disguised as his boss hadn't had the decency to let up the pace. Squinting to find the crosswalk he was after, he prayed the curry in his fridge hadn't gone sour.
Finally making his way home, his aforementioned annoyance was still occupying a larger amount of his mind than Ritsu would ever care to admit. Takano being a pain in the ass was hardly a new development, but his hardass expectations were especially grating today. Ritsu thanked his lucky stars for having slipped away early– Takano was pulled into a meeting before he could drag Ritsu home. They both knew exactly how those "visits" always ended. Since everything was on schedule and authors hadn't began to act out yet, Ritsu had been able to wrap up his work just past 6pm; pushing Takano from his mind, he decided it'd be a waste to walk the usual route home. The park was only a few blocks from the typical path he took, and though the cherry blossoms were hardly in a full bloom, the first buds were beginning to open. He doubted he'd have the chance during the peak blooming, so now was as good a time as ever.
It didn't take long for Takano to creep his way back to the brunettes' thoughts, though; another person walking under the trees happened to be carrying a bag of takeout, and Ritsu’s mind instantly jumped to embarrassingly domestic thoughts like I wonder if Takano-san is hungry and I wonder what he'd have made if we went home together. Once his mind went down that route, as much as his face burned and he tried to redirect his thoughts, his mind– ironically enough– had a mind of its own.
Glancing up at the dusty pink buds waiting to bloom, he gave in to the stream of Takano-centered thoughts. I'll definitely get a scolding tomorrow for not eating with him, but maybe he'll use it as an excuse to cook dinner for me– I wouldn't mind his oyakodon…
After a while of strolling and enjoying the fresh spring air, he began to… sense something. Ritsu couldn't tell when that eerie feeling began, just that it was only growing stronger. After a moment, he realized it was a feeling he knew all too well; he was being watched. Between his overbearing parents, Takano, and all the people hoping to see him fail at his work, Ritsu was well acquainted with the sensation of eyes following him. I swear to God, if Takano is behind me–
But he wasn't. Whipping around with a scowl already on his face, he was met with nothing. Takano was nowhere to be seen, and all the other people in the park were either walking the opposite direction from him, busy on their phones, or talking to a companion. Huh. Maybe I was imagining it..? He turned, walking a bit faster now. Sure, it was still light out, but feeling watched put an end to his sight-seeing mood. Maybe Takano will drag me back here once the blooms really take off– Ritsu nearly slapped himself for that one. He scowled and hoped his face wasn't too red, more attention is the last thing he wanted.
Still, the nagging feeling of being watched persisted, and he whipped around once more, convinced he'd catch some weirdo peeking around a tree at him; and there was nobody! At least, that's what he'd thought, until–
"Coo-coo."
Nearly jumping out of his skin and barely biting back a yelp, he snapped his gaze to the ground a mere pace behind, and saw his stalker.
A fucking pigeon.
Pressing a hand over his racing heart, Ritsu sighed and wilted with relief. For a moment there he'd actually started to get worried. Huh. So this little gremlin was the one staring holes into the back of his head– damn thing looked pretty proud of itself too.
Letting out a few more soft coos, the little bird stared up at Ritsu, head cocked in an utterly mischievous expression. Ritsu hadn't realized pigeons could be so cocky. It sort of reminded him of someone, he realized with a stab of annoyance.
"I'm sorry, I don't have any food for you…" And even if I did, this park probably doesn't like people feeding the birds... It made an odd grunting noise, before strutting a few paces away, and beginning to peck at the mulch and twigs lining the path. Suddenly Ritsu felt guilty for daydreaming of oyakodon… seeing a bird in person, after thinking of eating a "parent-and-child bowl" felt… weird. At least it's not a chicken. Do people even eat pigeons? Heart finally back to a normal rhythm, Ritsu sighed and finally resumed the trek home, ignoring the feeling of beady eyes on him and the occasional coo-ing noises. At some points he swore he even heard the tap tap tap of tiny feet puttering after him. By the time he left the park and reached the hill leading to his apartment building, the little stalker had disappeared.
It wasn't long before his other stalker was pounding on his door demanding attention; unfortunately this one could operate an elevator. At least he could cook too.
That night he dreamt of an angry, Takano-sized pigeon terrorizing the Emerald office.
Ritsu decided to avoid that park from then on.

Day 7: Post-Confession
@takaritsuweek has come to an end and today we have a lovely thing that I randomly came up with today and has no larger universe behind it. Let me know if you would like me to make it into a larger au!
Also on my ao3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/32949100/chapters/82121365
...
I love you.
The words keep ringing in Ritsu’s head. He tries to squash down the guilt he feels every time he remembers those words and Takano’s anguished face. He tries to ignore this mess, and how it happened, and all the misery he’s caused poor Takano.
Because Sir Takano doesn’t love Ritsu. He just thinks he does.
Ritsu hadn’t meant for Sir Takano to drink the love potion he was making. How was he supposed to know Sir Takano would see the chalice containing the potion when Ritsu went off to get the healing potion the knight had requested, and proceed to drink it by mistake?
It had been an accident!
But now the knight had been so sweet and kind, bringing Ritsu rare herbs and animal parts, always professing how much he loved Ritsu, and how he wants to spend the rest of his life spoiling Ritsu rotten.
He wasn’t sure if this was the heaven he had always dreamed of, or the worst sort of hell.
He’d been in love with Sir Takano Masamune since the man had rescued him after Ritsu had been kidnapped by a dragon that one time, and to have the man you love adore you back is wonderful. Yet to know it’s all just a ruse that will end either when the potion wears off or Ritsu manages to get down the remedy is excruciating.
Why do love potions have to be so hard to break?
He never should have taken that commission from the creepy dude in the mountains, no matter how good the pay was.
Was this punishment for his greed and the many, many lustful thoughts he’s had towards Sir Takano?
...
Pretending to drink a love potion wasn’t Masamune's smartest decision to date, but he couldn't say he wasn't seeing results.
He finally had the opportunity to showcase all his love and devotion to his dearest Ritsu without having to worry about shame or rejection or proper manners. He could go see Ritsu whenever he wants and spend as much time as possible with the shy witch without having to come up with excuses like needing potions.
Maybe this means Masamune is a coward, and maybe it’s futile because Ritsu thinks he’s only doing this because of the love potion he pretended to drink.
But Masamune has gotten to spend more time with Ritsu than ever before, and he's been able to truly get to know all the hidden parts of the mysterious witch of the woods. He’s fallen deeper and deeper in love with Ritsu each day; more than he ever thought was possible.
Though having potions constantly shoved down his throats isn’t the most pleasant experience.
But soon Ritsu will realize that he’s not under the influence of a love potion, and that Masamune means it when he says he loves him.
He just needs Ritsu to say he loves Masumune first, and then they’ll be able to live happily ever after.
