Arslan Senki Reread
Tumblr media
It starts out very early. I wonder when these sorcerers started becoming a presence in the royal court, if my hunch is right and they go way too far back (I mean, the royal line immediately turned on itself within a single generation, coincidence? mayhaps not).
When did they stop being a presence? Before the palace fire, definitely, I would guess, but did Osroes drive them out for being the catalyst that led Gotarzes to claim his bride? Imagine if they were present right up until Andragoras torched the palace, though. Hilmes, presumably dead, and the sorcerers just vanish overnight? That would be hella sus and since Andragoras seems to express no suspicion about it I'm guessing it didn't go down that way.
Tumblr media
I don't believe they have true prophetic powers. I definitely have discussed this in an older post before, I'll see if I can dig that up, but I think it's all sleight of hand and manipulation and set-up to get people to believe them. That in turn was set-up for me to say: We can't know for sure if Osroes was actually infertile or not. If the sorcerer was manipulating scenarios to gain trust, why can we be certain this statement alone could be true? And even if it were true, I wouldn't be surprised if the sorcerers were the ones to make it true, aka, slip smth into Osroes on the sly, make him unable to sire children.
Tumblr media
Andragoras here looks... sympathetic of his brother, almost sad, and it makes me wonder how close they were before they fell off? Did Andragoras rebel against Gotarzes, and resent Osroes for humoring their father? Did they form a tight bond of solidarity in response against Gotarzes' A+ parenting? Did they start bonding after this incident? Did Osroes only go to Andragoras who may have been taking an attitude against their father before, now that he can't take it anymore? Did he always? I remember they had a falling out over Tahamenay, was their bond already on so shaky a ground that they would feud over a woman? Okay, maybe that's an oversimplification of their conflict in that it's more than about Tahamenay it's also about Osroes breaking his promise and perhaps poking Andragoras' pride with that behavior but still...
What happened here?
Tumblr media
Oof, the framing of the panel making sure to feature his eyes but cutting off at a weird spot to make it look even more unsettling.
Tumblr media
Yeah Azrael, how did you?
Tumblr media
Tus and Isfan good 🥹 But aw, I wish we were shown a panel of Isfan causing a diversion. What did he do to mask their presence?
Tumblr media
Everyone with an eye can see how cold and distant the dynamic is between Arslan and his “parents”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kneeling, kneeling, I have thoughts regarding this reserved for a later entry.
Tumblr media
And Arslan remains kneeling through the entire conversation.

Arslan Senki Chapter 125
I'm not going to cover the whole thing, just a few bits and pieces that are most interesting to me. My heart rate still hasn't calmed down, and the way this chapter ended is not helping! (No Zandeh yet, sadly... next time for sure!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Losing my shit over these glimpses of TINY BABY ARSLAN and his birth father. Sad that we didn't get to see his mother too, though.
'Marzban' though, uh... I'll have to check the raw to see what it says there but I'm pretty sure in the novels it says that he rode off to battle with the rank of 100-rider captain. Honestly, Marzban feels like a totally inappropriate and way too attention-grabbing promotion for a man who needed to be killed off without anyone suspecting anything out of the ordinary.
I wonder what, if anything, will come of the 'Tahamenay's lost daughter' plotline in the manga? Will we ever find out the truth? Will it be different to the novels?
The end of the conversation between Tahamenay and Arslan felt very fufilling. Can't help but admire Arslan.
Tumblr media
good panel GOOD PANEL
The end of this scene was slightly different to the novels, but I don't wanna drop spoilers here in case it comes up in the next chapter or so.
OKAY onto the last quarter of the chapter which is back with Hilmes and Andragoras...
Tumblr media
What a horrific way to refer to the child he raised.
Hilmes trying so hard to rally himself after hearing all this, but when he hears Andragoras's reason for telling him all of this (which is totally on brand for Andragoras) he loses any composure he'd regained; he must sense that it's true.
I do think it's impressive that despite having the foundations of his world effectively shattered, he doesn't just let himself crumple, and his thoughts even turn to what Bahman said all those months ago, leading him to follow that line of reasoning in full and ask Andragoras who Arslan truly is.
Tumblr media
He's cute here.
But of course Andragoras isn't prepared to answer that question, and the chapter ends with the two of them crossing blades for the first time aksdhjfshshj I am going to be an utter nervous wreck next chapter.

Things Guiscard knows and what he does not know
As currently known by chapter 121, for the fandom records.
He knows Husrab is supposed to be dead (this is the point I'm absolutely hoping is true). He did not see him, but he must have heard Tahamineh call out and mention him by name in chapter 81. C'mon, Guiscard, I hope you were conscious enough for this!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He knows that magic is real and has heard of Zahhak. Chapter 108
Tumblr media
He knows what Isfan looks like (Idk why this is relevant but he does). Chapter 108,109.
Tumblr media
He does not know what Hilmes was doing on Mt. Damavand. Chapter 106
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He does not know he was supposed to be kidnapped by the sorcerers on the night of Isfan's attack on the Lusitanian camp. Chapter 109
Tumblr media
In summary: Guiscard holds some information to what's going on supernaturally, but not all of it. So I still hope to see him in for a nasty surprise. (Did they want to also put his head in a jar?)

My mom works in an animal shelter so I get to name dogs sometimes. A couple of years ago I named a dog Callum and I recently used Soren with a new one
The fun thing is that I just noticed both of these dogs are huskies so I'm gonna use this as a trend to name every husky I can as a TDP character

let me scream about my kids | @praevari said:
gieve and arslan!
Tumblr media
gieve is a force of nature. he’s charming, confident, and uninhibited with a deep love of freedom and beauty in all its forms. there’s this quote from him that i really love that goes “we all have our own ideas of beauty and it isn’t something that we can control or be compelled to feel.” idk i really love that i’m weak for my sparkly bi music son. on the surface, he’s very emotion-driven, but beneath that is the sharp mind of a man who can scheme with the best of them. things always go gieve’s way, whether other people realize it or not, and he’s not above using his looks and skills with flirting to gather information when he needs it. he’s also a practiced liar and he lets very few people know anything real about him. 20 people could ask him the same personal question and they’d each get a different answer. which is true? no one knows. perhaps none of them. gieve also loves MONEY. he’s been at the bottom of the world and at the top and he much prefers to have money than not.
he’s an extremely skilled archer and swordsman, though he doesn’t flaunt his fighting abilities as much as he flaunts his artistic prowess. still, that doesn’t stop him from being able to take on the main antagonist of his series in single combat and escape without a scratch, taunting him all the while.
he is a musician by trade, skilled with the oud, flute, harp, and several percussion instruments. he can sing and dance quite well and is skilled in writing and reciting poetry. he could easily be likened to a high-class courtesan overall in terms of his education, status, and how he functions in his profession. while he likes to talk about love, it’s really just part of the job, he doesn’t intend to actually let himself fall in love with anyone. that would compromise him too much and attach him to someone else which is something he does his best to avoid. lust and flirtation are one thing but love is beautiful and terrifying and something that would make him too vulnerable.
muses i think he’d get along with: i think he and jono would be a fun combination in the same way that my ranpo and jono were fun. apart from that, i am unsure.
Tumblr media
arslan is baby. baby king. baby angel. he smol. tiny. must be protected and loved.
he is the only child of king andragoras and queen tahamenay of the kingdom of pars, which is currently at war. it is heavily implied that he’s illegitimate, a bastard of the queen, therefore possessing no actual royal blood in the eyes of the kingdom. however, after king andragoras is defeated in battle and the royal capital of pars is taken under enemy occupation, arslan becomes the only one who can act as king and head the effort to take the city back and win the war.
he’s gentle, kind, and generous by nature but when he sees those he cares for in danger, his people being slaughtered, and innocents coming to harm, it strikes a fierce anger in his heart and he simply can’t turn a blind eye. he has a strong will and he keeps his people’s interests at heart over anything else. though uncertain of his own abilities most of the time, he refuses to give up or say that he cant do something because he can’t bear to let down all the people who have been fighting and dying for his sake and the sake of the kingdom.
arslan trusts and lets himself rely on the people closest to him-- his advisors and knights. they’re all precious to him and once he’s become attached to someone, he’d do anything for them. he wants to be able to protect and help people the way they’ve protected and helped him and due to this, he’s anxious to learn as much as he can about how to rule and battle well. he’d very open-minded and is willing to hear all manner of people from all walks of life. he’s honestly just trying his best.
muses i think he’d get along with: kija most likely, and maybe fai. and probably vold as well. it’s difficult to not get along with arslan.

Arslan Senki Reread
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought that, based on the spoilers kindly provided to me, that in the novels Andragoras was quite... indifferent in the scene of Osroes' death? That he didn't care, just standoffishly to the side, watching Osroes ramble in delirium? And mind you, that might still be the case in the novels, I can't check the source material over there, but it's really interesting how Andragoras is depicted here. Seated next to Osroes' sickbed, leaning forward, just, the body language! I'm just noticing how it seems to defy the impression we were given before, that those two were beefing and were not close at all.
Tumblr media
He even holds his brother's hand. Or well, Osroes is the one doing the holding here but Andragoras lets him. I'm quite shook at what we're being shown here! I do believe they did fall apart over who gets Tahamenay (still a gross conflict like she's some trophy...) but maybe, just maybe, they could've reconciled?
Never once in my life did I think I would be going all conspiracy theory over their dynamic of all things. What do you guys think?
Tumblr media
It's really hard not to feel for him here. He's devastated. I mean, who wouldn't be? To know that you aren't who you thought you were, that you were unwanted by the person you loved, the person you thought was your parent... It's made even worse by the fact that Hilmes built his entire identity and sense of self and self-worth on that false premise, not knowing the truth. Attack that, and his... everything just crumbles.
I think Andragoras knew what it would do to Hilmes.
Tumblr media
He's still calling out for his father (the one he thought was his father) even now. Just as he did during the fire that scarred him.
His world got eviscerated in both instances. It's clear how much he loved Osroes and really thought of him as a loving father who he could find solace in and could rely on.
:(
Tumblr media
Again, the moon is being brought up in relation to Hilmes here.
Tumblr media
Their conversation really does mirror Tahamenay and Arslan's. Arslan also asks, “Why did you tell me now?” and the intentions of Tahamenay and Andragoras couldn't be more different. I don't think Tahamenay did it to hurt Arslan. I think she decided he deserved to know the truth, that he's ready for it, and she does it as an act of compassion— she can't love him as a son, but she can give him the truth. And she can give him an out of this pointless conflict he didn't even have a stake in.
Andragoras did it to hurt Hilmes. That's it.
Actually, now that I think about it, Tahamenay and Osroes also foil each other in a way? Both being put into this situation where they have to pretend another's child as theirs and resenting that and resenting the people who put them in that situation and resenting the child. The difference was in how they expressed that resentment. Tahamenay was cold from the start, because she simply couldn't bear to face Arslan. But in the end, she tried to give him kindness in a way she could. She gave him the truth. Osroes on the other hand... pretended and pretended and pretended for eleven years before he went “MURDER IT” like...
I really really think that's interesting. Not only do the two conversations mirror each other I think the stories they tell also mirror, and not just about the lineage stuff.
Both stories about children and the parents who resented them.
Tumblr media
Andragoras looming over Hilmes.
Tumblr media
And then Hilmes has a realization.
Tumblr media
Not much to say about this panel, except that despite being on the smaller side and off to the side, it does paint quite the imposing picture. We're looking up at the throne. We're looking up at Kaykhusraw's banner behind it.

As much as I know, Andragoras and Tahamine adopted Arslan because Tahamine gave birth to a baby girl, and after that she can't have baby anymore. But why Andragoras didn't try to have other babies with other women? Is there any explanation?
Okay, warning for novel spoilers.
First, the truth about the child born to Andragoras and Tahamenay. The baby was a son rather than a daughter, but unfortunately it was stillborn. This is revealed by Zahhak in Book 16:
'"If Tahamenay had given birth to the child without mishap, things would have turned out differently. Since the son born to that woman was stillborn, Andragoras panicked and staged a foolish charade. No only did he bring in someone else's son, but he also bought three baby girls, gave them the appropriate silver bracelets and sent them off to separate parts of the country. This was all for the sake of preventing the infertile Tahamenay from committing suicide."' (Book 16, Chapter Five, Part ii)
You're right that Tahamenay was left infertile after giving birth. I assume the birth itself must have been pretty traumatic for those who attended her to know this was the case right away, as if Andragoras had believed she was able to give him more children, I doubt he would have gone to all this effort.
As for why he didn't father children with anyone else, as far as I know there are no details about this, but we can make some guesses.
Andragoras doesn't seem to particularly care about the continuation of the royal line. He sees it for what it is, and in all honestly I think he gets a grim sense of satisfaction from hinting at the unpleasant truth while never revealing it in full, and was fully prepared to let the line die out after his death. I'm sure that in an ideal world he'd have liked to have his son inherit, but when that's not possible (specifically, when it's not possible for him to have another child with Tahamenay), from his point of view, a substitute will do.
He needed an heir in order to maintain stability in his rule, which is likely a big motivation for taking Arslan. By the time Arslan is named Crown Prince and officially designated as his heir, five years have passed. During that time, perhaps he held on to some hope that Tahamenay would somehow conceive again, but after five years it must have been apparent that it truly was impossible.
I do think, in the absence of a biological child with Tahamenay, he fully intended for Arslan to become Shah after his death, but was more interested in preserving his own power during his lifetime than he was in setting Arslan up for success.
For Andragoras, I think his biggest motivation was "having". The throne. The wealth and power that came with it. Pars itself. And Tahamenay as his queen. He wanted more than anything to possess her, and he did it by controlling her since he couldn't force her to love him and he knew that without believing she had a living child out there somewhere, she would find a way to escape by killing herself. Perhaps he was even so obsessed with her that no other woman would do. I believe all of this mattered more to him than thinking about what would happen to the country after his own death. He's a very selfish person, especially compared to Arslan.
Unlike Andragoras, Arslan has no personal desire for power and does not wish to be Shah for his own sake, but rather views it as his duty. He spends his whole life wondering what an ideal ruler is like and worries about not living up to that ideal. He is conscientious and puts the future of his people before all else. He doesn't care about riches or treasure. And he does not want to marry or have an heir of his own. They are total opposites in every way.
(That last bit was a digression; I just find it interesting. Hopefully this has answered your question!)
May as well edit to add here as well as in the comments: it is also mentioned in Book 7 that part of the reason for the baby-swap is that having a son preserves Tahamenay’s status. That must have been important to Andragoras (again, for selfish reasons, not for Tahamenay’s sake).

The queen did not understand Arslan، She did not even try, but did Arslan really understand her?

Hello! I just wanted to say that your sitcom au is so adorable and funny. If you don't mind me asking, are Arslan's parents neglecting him because they're busy but they truly love him or is it the same situation as the anime?
Related to this and part of the sitcom AU
They’re technically busy but Andragoras really doesn’t care. He has an heir, that’s enough. Tahamenay wishes she could care but the sight of Arslan is an unpleasant reminder of...things so she keeps him at a distance. Osroes’ decision to keep Arslan under the care of Daryun (and Hermes) relieves her and she’s content enough to occasionally call Arslan once a month and play mother.
Tumblr media
Daryun and Hermes dread the monthly report though because nearly every time, something new will be sent to them, be it object or human. Hermes doesn’t care at first but when Vahriz - tired of getting alarmed messages from Tahamenay - casually mentions accidentally slipping to Hermes’ sweetheart Irina about how Hermes is not taking proper care of Arslan, he began to get his shit together and dread the phone calls as much as Daryun is.
Daryun is just worried about how to stash away whatever new thing Tahamenay sends Arslan because they don’t receive just one of it, they get like 30. One time, she sent them table lamps...
