Tiffany & Sacrifice(pt 1)
This is another “quick post” for Tadeo Jones... but also SPOILERS.
Let me talk about Tiffany and the feeling of an incomplete character arc. Sooo-- I have a number of opinions on the arc of this sequel. But number one is-- I get a HUGE feeling of like-- Tadeo’s moment in the climax feels a bit like that one Sailor Moon meme:
Like, for all it claims to be a sacrifice he just-- stayed there, and it felt really selfish being honest. BUT MORE, it felt like the whole moment in general was something that was undeserved and not properly built to. Handed to Tadeo because well--
He’s the protagonist.
SO!
Why do I bring up Tiffany? Well-- I’m just going to come out and say it. The lesson that it felt like this movie was building to--
Wasn’t that learnt by Tadeo and Sara in movie one?(or at least something really similar, I mean... they gave up sharing Paititi with the world... made that promise. And Tadeo has his whole-- “the greatest treasure is the friends you make along the way” line)
“According to the legend Apollo taught Midas an important lesson, that your wealth is not as important as the people that you have close to you”
ALSO-- There are TWO Moments, you see-- That feel like they’re nodding to something.
BOTH of them separately have a moment with Tiffany. Of course Sara’s is the warning.
“There are too many signs that the power of Midas shouldn’t be trifled with, I’m just saying that maybe the collar shouldn’t see the daylight”
Also, just-- generally-- does anyone else feel like there was no real proper resolution for her helping Rackham?! Like not even a cursory one, it’s just like, she done that but we’ll forget about it.
Also, as an aside-- the climax moment-- there’s something of a mirror affect that I think is ultimately wasted because nothing comes out of it. It’s like... this
Feels like a callback to:
BUT THEN NOTHING HAPPENS?! Like, at least with the moment from the First movie, Mummy eventually returns the favor. And not even that long after. But Tiffany being saved by Sara?!
There’s no real pay off to that? Along with the fact the lesson feels like it was aimed at Tiffany, the way the whole “redemption” for her brief betrayal passes in the background--
Also-- I could go off on a tangent about a WHOLE host of other symbolism buuut--
Here’s the cincher. Tiffany’s betrayal was motivated by one thing. She was chasing the “greatest” discovery in regards to Midas’ Collar. What a find! What a treasure! How could her idol think that it needs to stay hidden/buried?!
And then she also was naive, and like-- it felt like only the start of a final lesson when Rackham pulled the whole “I don’t let the losing team win” thing-- like--
I would not be surprised if there was original intent for that ending was going to be have Tiffany make the sacrifice. Sacrifice her original goal/dream of making such a grand discovery. Also tie up the loose end of where Sara’s journal of notes went--
BUT ARC WISE...
Tiffany making the “Sacrifice for Love”(and hey, Midas made it for his daughter) would have thematically tied up all of those kind of hanging and loose points in her character development.
I also have a whole host and list of notes regarding the sacrifice scene and a rant of the symbolic framing-- Because seriously... JUST in general the whole thing feels empty or forced. Like, I have so much on how it feels like it could have/should have gone.
For Tiffany sure, but also have plenty to talk about on the framing and symbolism for Mummy leading up to this climax as well.
I will probably do a proper full analysis/rant on this later, with more points, but for now call this a preview.
