in lieu of answering asks, mentioning anything of substance or actual character playlists i bring you todays epiphany: harvest of sorrow actually fits taal early life (or rather certain circumstances *cough* nmc *cough*) pretty well. wonderful excuse to listen to it on repeat. and with that i shall leave again.

Multiple comms ask game! 9, 10 & 19 for your peeps if you like! :D
10. Which one died to Balthazar?
imani! she's the one mainly leading the fight against him (both out of her regular sense of duty and because she still has faith that he'll see reason), and while taal tends to tag along on these missions, he's also very busy with aurene then. it's a little different than the canon story - she isn't aurene's champion so she doesn't have the bond with her. balthazar didn't originally kill her expecting aurene to show up, rather he wanted to get her out of the way to get to the scion and her champion. that aurene showed up anyway is a lucky (more or less) coincidence he happily took advantage of. but imani was already almost dead by that time and only caught a small glimpse of her. it also takes her a day to resurrect herself.
19. If they weren't the commanders, would they still be friends?
i'm not sure if they would've met if they weren't involved with the canon story tbh. however, i can very much see imani and laerus becoming friends (assuming, of course, that laerus' temporal displacement still happens). they work well personality-wise and are both happy about making friends with someone who shares similar goals.
taal on the other hand... he isn't the most social person and was very entrenched in whispers operations before becoming commander. even if he did meet the other two, he probably wouldn't have bothered getting to know them beyond what was necessary for his current mission.
9. Did any of them join the Shining Blade?
gotta expose myself here, my recollection of lws3 is. questionable. that being said, i have ideas how it'd play out if either imani or taal joined and i'm really not sure which one i'm going for. imani would make more sense as the only human and also the one mainly tracking balthazar. however she really doesn't like anise, doesn't really agree with the shining blade's modus operandi and would have a huge problem with how much the oath restricts her. taal doesn't have those issues (even though he doesn't trust anise at all), but isn't human and would have to be very careful with his whispers' missions afterwards (he isn't even necessarily involved in anything pertaining to krytan politics but i have no idea what would count as treason to the oath?). so this one remains at a tbd. although at this point i don't really expect this to be brought up again in canon....

i've been scrolling through my drafts and i think i actually found the reason i considered making water such a big thing for taal during the nmc torture (spoiler alert: it's a song)
youtube
specifically the part starting at 1:45, with the lyrics 'It leaves a mark on the mind/It weaves a web in the background/Silently/No time to spare/No sign of the exit wound/God help me/There's no drying off/Once you're soaked right down to the bone/Hopefully/Somebody thinks of me in the aftermath/Woe is me'
and another song that actually kinda fits him well from the same album (also surprise surprise one of my favourites)

I'd love to get 1, 6, 14, and 20 for your co-commanders✨️
@mystery-salad
1. At what point during the story do they meet up?
answered here!
6. Did they chase after Caithe together or was one/were some on the airship with Trahearne during the start of HoT?
imani is on the airships with trahearne to lead the assault and laerus mainly does the chasing, while taal originally stays back for logistics (having refused to meet the pale tree). he joins laerus after the pact ships go down, although mainly to track down DE and imani, still intent on avoiding caithe and trahearne as much as possible. him and caithe still get some quality 'ex-siblings arguing' time with laerus having to babysit mediate, while imani gets taken prisoner alongside traho.
14. How close are they? What do they think of each other?
they all definitely start out on a more 'professional' basis, someone who shares the same goals and ambitions. over the course of their trauma the story they grow very close - taal and laerus both especially were very lonely before, and their positions as Commanders means that they all develop a unique bond with each other that no one else can ever truly match. but they aren't really co-dependent, and all have deep meaningful relationships with other people.
everything else is under the cut bc Wall Of Text strikes again
laerus: he's the oldest of them and he feels responsible for the other two and their well-being as the assigned Dad-Friend. sometimes he can get a little overbearing with his care but he knows that they're capable and trusts their abilities. he'll still give them minions to tag along on harder missions, and nag them about properly taking care of themselves.
imani: especially in the beginning she admired laerus a lot and wanted his approval, which she still obviously wants but now it's on a basis of a strong friendship. she'll always go to him for advice on personal matters. her and taal have a more quiet understanding. they prefer actions to words with the other, and when they talk about personal matters they're very direct - but they both appreciate it.
taal: he has a hard time trusting people and definitely took the longest to warm up to the others but once he did they were his. he doesn't really do familial relationships anymore (or tries not to) but imani is kind of like a sister to him, and laerus is one of his 'rocks' in life. he even took both of them to meet the soundless community that is his home (and family) :]
20. Would they pick their co-commander/s over anyone else? Over Tyria's safety?
not over tyria's safety. they're all painfully aware that sacrifices have to be made - that sometimes you just can't save everyone, no matter how hard you try. and, most importantly, none of them would want the others to jeopardize the entire world just for them. that being said, imani and taal definitely will choose their co-commanders over other people's lives if necessary. it's a tactical descision - all three of them are extremely valuable assets and excel in their fields in ways few others ever could, by virtue of their unique knowledge, experiences and the trust they earned by both powerful political players and the masses. obviously they don't enjoy it or particularly want to, but they understand the need for it. laerus isn't often in the position where he has to make those descisions and he'd rather work himself to death than condemn others to that fate. i wouldn't say that HoT broke him (can't break what's already in pieces) but it was the push for him to stop being as involved in the military part of being commander as he had been until then. he obviously can't avoid it entirely but having to order others to walk into certain death just isn't a burden he can bear anymore.

inspired by @uselessidiotsquad 's post
my salads ranked by how close they are to the dream
nelaania and neirin
definitely dreamers, though loyal to each other above all else and they're relatively lax about keeping up ventari's teachings. neirin went a bit insane when nelaania was lost in the mists and his connection to the dream suffered during that time. nelaania had to learn some soundless techniques since becoming a revenant because bigger groups of sylvari can be a bit much in combination with her echoes.
cianáed
follows his dream - aiding the commander - and used to take ventari's teachings very seriously. over the years she's adopted a more nuanced morality and has become more distant from the grove. they're kind of disillusioned with the pale tree, but turning soundless or nightmare will never be an option.
aodhagán
very tentative connection to the dream. he remembers parts of his 'template's' dream but only vaguely. if it was only about the pale tree he'd learn to become soundless (if he found the motivation for it) but he likes unsettling other sylvari he comes across when the connection doesn't fluke out. it's kind of like very shitty wifi.
taaliesin
completely soundless. he used to be a very idealistic dreamer who revered the connection he had to his siblings above all else and was especially close to caithe. faolain kidnapped and tortured him attempting to turn him to nightmare. he could flee before he succumbed to it but his faith in the dream, the pale tree and his siblings had been broken beyond repair. after that, he learned how to cut himself off from the dream from darach, my firstborn oc and the first soundless.
kokudan
not from the pale tree. xe didn't remember any dream and so far no one else who could conceivably be from the same tree has turned up. has some kind of awareness of pale tree sylvari (and mordrem if they ever meet one) but it's more like an almost imperceptible itch.

5, 7, and 8! for the multiple commanders ask! (@where-is-caithe)
5. Did all of them, only a few, or just one of them go through the dungeon storylines?
answered here!
7. Did all of them go into Mordremoth's mind? Did an extra NPC get left out or did two still go?
laerus went in! he was the only one who could - taal had stayed in tarir with aurene's egg because as a soundless he had a hard time trying to keep mordy out and imani was severely weakened from being captured. i might still change it when i actually get around to playing the story on the three of them but i'm fairly set on braham and canach. while he tries not to hold caithe's actions against her too much, he can't in good conscience make such a risky choice because betrayal is a huge sore spot for him.
8. Who mercy killed Trahearne?
i've been bouncing back and forth between imani and laerus on this one for a while tbh, but i think it works better if imani does it. she's spent time as a mordrem prisoner like him and they definitely talked about mercy killing each other during that time. that doesn't really make it easier for her, but she understands that it's necessary and would have wanted him to do the same if their positions were reversed. laerus probably could have done it, if there was no other option but... he's had to make concessions when it comes to his pacifism over and over as commander already in this campaign.
it's something that weighs on both of them heavily over the following years - understandably so for imani, because while she rationally knows that this was probably the only way to defeat mordremoth, she cannot stop holding it against herself. and while they've both talked about it at length and imani always would have chosen to do it rather than letting him suffer through it, laerus still feels guilty that he couldn't do it himself - that he couldn't take that burden from her.
i want to say that it probably would've been for the best for everyone if taal could have been the one to do it - and taal very much holds that opinion - but. while he may be the one who has the least compunctions about killing (and he does very much hate trahearne, even if it's far more complicated than he wants to admit) it would've opened up so many old (still festering) wounds again.
link to the ask game!

How about 1 & 5 for the co-commander asks? ^^ (- @orrianreaper)
1. At what point during the story do they meet up?
imani and laerus meet during the lvl40 vigil story - the ebonhawke peace treaty. she's just joined the vigil and does the regular mission with forgal, laerus is there both as an emissary for the priory and the legions (and rytlock), having worked on making the treaty happen for years. they both remain in contact after that (although relatively sparsely) and meet taaliesin during the first claw island story, at which point all three of them start working together more closely.
5. Did all of them, only a few, or just one of them go through the dungeon storylines?
oh, fun question and something i hadn't considered before! laerus is definitely present for the ascalonian catacombs, and every dungeon rytlock takes part in - so he's the one who stays in twilight arbor with caithe. imani does caudecus, and they probably do the other ones in pairs of two and occasionally three, since they're already aquainted at that point.
(sidenote: it's been A While since i've played the dungeon storylines and payed attention to them so i'm hesitant to assign them to the three but maybe i'll revisit this once i've bullied someone into running the story with me again)
