The excitement I felt at the first 90% of this statement all for it to crash down at “global warming”.

Anyway, that’s why Avatar remains the best.
Aang and Katara didn’t tell the villains to say they were sorry, but they also didn’t kill them they took them down. Now, Aang absolutely gave Ozai a chance to say he was sorry (three times), but Ozai didn’t do it...and it was only then that Aang took his bending away.
He told Ozai that he had the power to stop it.
He refused to kill Ozai with his own lightning.
And he refused to let the Avatar State deliver violent justice to balance the scales of oppression.
Aang wasn’t satisfied with “justice” or “balance”--he chose to put Good in control. He chose to let Ozai live and took away his power--giving him a chance to reform while taking away his greatest weapons.
It’s quite possible that Ozai died peacefully in his sleep on some small patch of land in a corner of the Fire Nation, having become enlightened to the corruption of power and ego. Perhaps, even in his last moments, Aang restored his bending to him, so that he could feel fire within his hands once more--or perhaps he understood that that wasn’t what mattered in life. Who knows how Ozai’s story ended? But it didn’t end with him forcing Aang to question if there was anything he could have done better, because Aang did His Best and Triumphed.
It was a good ending.
