Dear Rebecca, I wonder that your dresscode for July is still three cardigans in total? If so, you should wear matching woollen babytights too. And woollen body suites to keep the tights in place. The tights should be made of thick angora or alpaca wool, and the last one made of mohair, to show its fluffy character. Color should be white or baby pink, matching either the last cartigan or matching for a two year old toddler, which you are for this summer. So you would remain warm dressed from head to toes for the whole day, even on hot summer days. And in case you show any discomfort in this outfit, you should go to bed with three layers of warm wool under your woollen nigth gown too.

This would be a cosy punishment for the hot summertime, don´t you agree?

Marina covered the January 2013 issue of Ireland's Kiss Magazine! The colorful editorial was shot by Naomi Gaffey and styled by her sister Naomi Gaffey who made sure to include a handful of Irish and other British labels!

Hair and makeup by Billy Orf, respectively.

For the cover photo, she looked stellar in the Fall/Winter 2012 star print stretch silk cocktail dress with long bat sleeves (€410.00 - sold out) by up-and-coming Irish designer NATALIEBCOLEMAN.

Look n. 2 shows Marina wearing a Reiss ivory knit sweater featuring ribbed sleeves and a round neck (€155.00 - sold out). I couldn’t find her exact one but I've pictured a similar one for you above!

Another emerging Irish designer featured in the editorial is Emma Manley and her brand Manley Studio. This rose-gold metallic leather skirt with micro-scalloped hem (€385.00 - sold out) was created for her Spring/Summer 2013 collection!

Chunky necklaces were the rave back in 2012 (along with peplums and neon colors). But I wouldn't mind wearing this ZARA chain necklace with diamanté leopard head (€19.95 - sold out) even today!

Marina's very girly look was completed with these whimsy Office tiger pointed-toe pumps with multicolored gems at the front (€89.00 - sold out).

Both Marina's Stolen Moment pink velvet skater dress (€85.00 - sold out) and studded leather biker jacket (€293.00 - sold out) are from the MINKPINK x Urban Outfitters collection.

In some other photos, she added the Topshop "Geek" print blue tee (€27.00 - sold out)...

...and her Fam Irvoll round blue acetate sunglasses, which she absolutely loved back then!

My favorite look from this editorial comprises an American Apparel black tank crop top (€24.00 - sold out), and a Topshop black pencil skirt (€61.00 - sold out), entirely covered in rhinestones!

This look is completely vintage! Her colorful houndstooth mohair sweater is vintage 1980s Rafaella (embellished with an Accessorize M letter brooch) while her black leather skirt is a vintage find from Folkster.

Faye Wong’s Cult Fashion Looks, From Margiela to Vivienne Westwood (2022)

We look back at the Canto-pop queen’s boldest looks—and the fashion brands she wore before they were cool

Is there anyone cooler than Faye Wong? From being a muse to filmmaker Wong Kar-wai to collaborating with dream-pop pioneers Cocteau Twins, the Hong Kong musician has always forged a unique path to stardom.

While Wong’s status as the queen of Canto-pop is as undeniable—she holds a Guinness World Record for best-selling video game theme song for 1999’s Eyes On Me—she’s also known for a daring sense of style.

In true Leo fashion, Wong has boldly experimented with her outfits across her three-decade career. Reflecting her unconventional tastes, her wardrobe is an Instagram fashion archivist’s dream, boasting avant-garde brands like Yohji Yamamoto, Rick Owens, Helmut Lang and Raf Simons. With the help of stylists Thomas Chan and Titi Kwan, Wong wore Margiela before “Tabi boots” entered the mainstream vocabulary, and understood the cult appeal of a Vivienne Westwood corset before Pinterest existed. Oh, and did we mention she’s a Philophile?

In celebration of her 53rd birthday this month, we take a look at Wong’s singular style and all the covetable fashion pieces that would have made her an Internet It-girl today.

1. Vivienne Westwood dog print corset, 1992

Before they became popular with the likes of Bella Hadid and Kourtney Kardashian, Wong performed in a Vivienne Westwood corset from the brand’s “Always on Camera” fall/winter 1992 collection. This one is distinguished by its puppy print, taken from the art of 18th-century English painter Thomas Gainsborough. Wong’s accessories, featuring layers of beads and a cross necklace, was also an edgy styling trick borrowed from the godmother of punk.

2. Plastic slip dress and mohair knit crop top, 1993

In a look that is quintessentially ’90s, Wong wore a see-through slip dress and a crop top to perform at a music awards in 1993. It has certainly lived on in fashion moodboards: 29 years later, a similar outfit was worn by pop star Olivia Rodrigo for her Sour tour.

3. Ann Demeulemeester backless top and leather pants, 1996

Wong threw on another daring look when she returned to the stage in 1996, this time pulling off a full look from Ann Demeulemeester’s spring/summer 1996 collection that made her resemble a rockstar.

4. Ann Demeulemeester asymmetrical jacket, 1996

Wong demonstrated her penchant for the Antwerp Six designer yet again by wearing this striking suit jacket that came with only one shoulder.

5. Yohji Yamamoto Harlequin coat dress, 1997

For the cover of her self-titled album, Wong transformed into a goth goddess by wearing a long checkerboard coat from Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto’s fall/winter 1997 collection.

6. Helmut Lang top and slit skirt, 1997

Wong certainly embraced ’90s minimalism, as this Helmut Lang ensemble she wore for a magazine shoot shows us.

7. Raf Simons cobweb knit top, Jurgi Persoons skirt, Jeremy Scott’s sole-less heels, 1998

Avant-garde Belgian designer Jurgi Persoons had only opened his eponymous label two years before Wong sported one of his pieces, which is extremely telling of the singer’s pre-Internet intuition of what’s cool. Besides styling it with a Raf Simons grail piece, what makes this outfit all the more impressive are the sole-less shoes from Jeremy Scott: Wong is the only person to wear them off the runway.

8. Maison Martin Margiela sweater, 1999

More minimalism, this time courtesy of the cult fashion label formerly known as Maison Martin Margiela.

9. Custom Titi Kwan knit dress, 2010

Besides sourcing pieces from the edgiest fashion brands around the world, Wong also turned to her longtime stylist Titi Kwan for dramatic ensembles to take to the stage in, like this voluminous textured dress. 

10. Alexander McQueen skull dress, 2011

A year after Alexander McQueen’s death, Wong performed in a dress from the British designer that featured his famous skull motif.

11. Custom Titi Kwan crystal chandelier dress, 2011

Forget swinging from the chandelier; Wong sang in one for a concert in Taipei, a feat achieved with the design brilliance of Titi Kwan and over 10,000 sparkling Swarovski crystals.

12. Céline turtleneck and pleated skirt, 2016

Even when dressing down, Wong opts for a fashion label unlike any other: old Céline, helmed by Phoebe Philo. The singer is a known fan of the brand, having made rare public appearances to attend its fashion shows.

To mark the appearance of Leonard Cohen’s “Begin Again” in our Summer issue, we’re publishing a series of short reflections on his life and work.

In 2002, the year I graduated from college, I had a young male psychiatrist at NewYork-Presbyterian who called me the night before every session to confirm our appointment. I feel bad for this guy now. He was kind of clueless and innocent, and I tried to horrify him at every session with more and more outlandishly irreverent thoughts about life. I’m not sure why I did this—maybe just for my own entertainment. He used to tell me that he could decipher my moods based on my outfits—he could determine when I was depressed or activated or hadn’t been sleeping based on the color combinations I chose. This was a very confused, manic period for me, and I had developed a practice of dressing that followed something like an equation. One garment had to be the equivalent of garbage; disgusting T-shirts and track pants fit into that category. One garment had to be opulent and luxurious, like a sequin blazer or buttery leather pants. And one garment had to be ironic. This was the hardest category to fulfill because it was so subjective.

I had first learned the word ironic from the hit nineties movie Reality Bites, but I didn’t understand it until I had lived in New York for several years. New York teaches you all kinds of interesting things. It was during this period when I was dressing like a lunatic that I used Leonard Cohen’s spoken opening of “First We Take Manhattan” as the recording on my answering machine: “First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin.” His voice is dark and conspiratorial but pure and noble, and he speaks these words a cappella, as though to announce that a great force of collective love and fury is about to overtake the world. I thought this was rather ironic, because I was a young woman who was not in the business of overtaking anything. I could barely take my medication.

One night I got very drunk and showed up to my psychiatry appointment the next day in a full-length yellow-and-green plaid mohair car coat from the sixties, a Boston Pops sweatshirt from childhood with sleeves that ended at my elbows, and ragged pajama pants stuffed into knee-high go-go boots. I’m not sure what I was thinking—maybe this was the outfit I’d had on the night before. “I tried to call you yesterday evening,” the psychiatrist said. “But I got some old man’s answering machine.” “That’s not just some old man,” I said. “That’s my husband.” I left it at that. I loved Leonard Cohen more like a daughter loves a father, though. His music tempered my insanity with a brighter kind of madness. He grounded my heart at a time when I was worried I would jump out the window.

When exploring Tokyo back on December 3th, 2018, she and Jack enjoyed a little impromptu photoshoot on the streets.

It’s not often we get to see Marina rock emerging designers in the present day.

M chose one of the doll-like dresses with red polka-dot print and bow detail from Ryan Lo’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection titled “Saturn Returns”, as celestial reflection of what the designer said was a turning point for him personally: the realization that he wants go big on tulle and pair his dresses with Gina pumps instead of sneakers. Full-on pretty, full-on princess, full-on fairy tale.

In her hand she’s carrying a white mohair cardigan by American Vintage.

The look was accessorized with a Mulberry Fall/Winter 2018 Darley croc-embossed black leather satchel bag...

I got my first doll (JLY #14) and Coconut in 2004 and Samantha a year after that. I also have the mini Julie doll that I got in 2007. I gave away my JLY and Coconut over ten years ago but I still have my Samantha, although in a very played with condition (her joints are very loose). As a way to collect/try on clothing without putting more strain on my 2005 doll, I recently got a BeForever Samantha. Fibres

i have an aversion to manmade fibres. i don't like them. i recognise there are times when they are useful (and cheap lol) but mostly i recommend using natural fibres, like wool, cotton and cashmere. some of these are animal fibres so if you have made the decision to not use those, have a google. some are plant fibres.

polymer blends are acceptable sometimes but they are on thin ice. I am now going to explain in a haphazard way what different fibres are and what you use them for. this is very individualistic and there aren't really any rules. it is more like general convention, do whatever u want. knit with strips of binbags idc

wool:

great for warmth.

most wool now is processed, but if you can get the stuff or you spin the stuff with more lanolin (sheep grease) then it will be more waterproof.

this is good for jumpers, sweaters, cardigans. depending on the feel of the wool and the length of the fibre you will use it for different things. if it is itchy as hell you will not want to make a skin-tight jumper.

wool fibres act like little hooks to hook on to each other. this makes a close fabric. this is especially good for creating a pattern with different colours, as the gaps between different yarns will close more easily and seamlessly.

has a bit of stretch to it

washing - you can put this in the washing machine on a wool wash (or a cold or hand wash cycle). depending on what you have done, you might want to hand wash it (e.g. something very chunky). don't put it in the drier.

cotton:

cotton is lightweight. breathable. it is not very warm and tends to be more drapey than wool. it isn't waterproof and takes ages to dry.

if you are making big thick socks or layers close to your body for something like a hiking trip where you expect to be sitting in it wet for a while, don't use cotton.

cotton is great for a dress or similar. my mum made a few ties out of it.

it is not stretchy like wool. very nice for summer projects and layers.

can go in the washing machine!!! however depending on what you've created you might not want it to lol

cashmere:

fucking expensive

soft and usually very fine weight. keeps you warm.

often you will find cashmere in a blend. this is nice. often people will use this in thin, tight clothing.

has some stretch to it.

depends on quality (short cashmere is not as good as long cashmere but it is nice and soft and fluffy)

cashmere is sometimes a pain to wash (cold wash, ideally by hand. do not put it in the drier)

mohair:

very fine and VERY fluffy (also itchy depending)

there is a big trend right now (2023) for knitting loose jumpers out of thin light-weight mohair on huge needles. i think that's quite cute.

easily combined with another fibre to make something more dense but with extra fluff.

hard to wash (cold handwash usually and shouldn't go in the drier)

acrylic (or other plastic fibre):

this shit will not burn it will MELT

acrylic does not last (but it will stick around in landfill for years!). it can be itchy. it is not breathable so you will feel sweaty in a big jumper or socks made of the stuff.

because it is not breathable (does not really wick away moisture) it can also be stinky, so making something out of this stuff for an area that gathers sweat may not be ideal

my mum calls this stuff horrible plastic rubbish and ykw i agree but it has its place because it is CHEAP and DRIES.

i use it for waste yarn when i machine knit

does wash easily tho

dries very quickly

ideal for things that are going to get wet, like hiking socks and swimwear
