Continuing to look at #variantcover options from #thetestcomic archives in what may or may not be a month of third anniversary posts. 1. Unused (and not entirely finished - note the blank corner box) cover for the February 202 film noir issue. 2. The final cover as published for comparison. No ads. 3. The second life of those vaguely #stuartdavis cover designs as two color “endpapers”. They appeared as the front and back inside covers. And in this era when issues were generally b/w except for the outside cover, it was a fun variation on the form still to have one color spread but to have it inside (and with the b/w outside cover also contrasting with the color covers up to that point). #draw #drawing #drawings #drawingoftheday #sketch #sketches #sketching #art #artists #artistsoninstagram #graphic #graphics #illustration #illustrations #illustrator #illo #comics #comix #comicbook #comicbooks #comicpanel #comicpanels https://www.instagram.com/p/Ceh0qEYsKjG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Saw, Stuart Davis, 1923, Art Institute of Chicago: American Art
In this painting, Stuart Davis presented the saw as a modern icon for the 20th century. It is one of a series of paintings of solitary objects he produced in the 1920s. Here the tool floats in a Cubist composition of flat, abstract planes. The elevation of mundane objects to artistic subjects appealed to modernists like Davis because it signaled a new means of working that was free of art historical associations. Through prior gift of William Wrigley
Size: 94 × 55.9 cm (37 × 22 in.)
