São Domingos Gusmão 1170 - 1221 Festa: 08 de agosto Padroeiro: astrônomos e astronomia; pessoas falsamente acusadas; observadores de estrelas Origem: Castela Velha, Espanha . Domingos era de família nobre, rica e católica. Quando foi batizado, sua mãe viu uma estrela brilhar em seu peito. Ele tinha um tio que era sacerdote e isso lhe serviu de exemplo para evangelizar. Muito culto e estudado, com 24 anos, Domingos decidiu tornar-se sacerdote e fez parte dos Canônicos da Catedral de Osma, depois foi convidado a auxiliar o rei Afonso VII em trabalhos diplomáticos. Em Santa Maria de Prouille, fundou um mosteiro destinado a mulheres que estavam fadadas a uma vida de prostituição por conta de sua situação financeira. Na Igreja do mosteiro, a Virgem Maria apareceu a Domingos lhe pedindo que difundirse a devoção do Rosário, prometendo a conversão dos hereges e a salvação dos fiéis. Assim o fez, e sua fama de santidade se espalhou pela Europa. Logo pessoas atraídas por seu carisma começaram a segui-lo. O grupo de jovens chamados "Irmãos Pregadores" logo tornou-se algo maior, pois Domingos sentiu no coração o desejo de fundar uma ordem religiosa, a Ordem dos Pregadores, futuramente conhecida como Ordem dos Dominicanos. Esse carisma era distinto pela competencia científica, espírito de oração e temor de Deus, e pregação bem fundamentada na Palavra. Casas foram criadas nos principais centros universitários, pois Domingos queria atrair jovens acadêmicos para a vida religiosa, e conseguiu. Fé, ciência e piedade. A Ordem floresceu e cresceu na Europa, os pregadores arrastavam multidões, defendendo a fé e combatendo heresias. Domingos faleceu aos 51 anos, muitos milagres foram atribuidos a sua intercessão, e seu amigo Papa Gregorio IX o canonizou, treze anos após a sua morte. . St. Dominic, whose feast is today, never traveled to New Haven; his Order of Preachers however, founded five years before his death 800 years ago this month, today manage St. Mary’s and have maintained it for 135 years. Shortly before the Dominicans took custody of St. Mary’s in 1886, Blessed Michael McGivney, whose inaugural feast day occurs on Friday, established the Knights of Columbus with church parishioners as part of his ministry. Living centuries apart, St. Dominic and Blessed Michael McGivney worked in charity, unity, and fraternity with their communities.
