The little church in the sea Featured on Bing 9 February 2022
St Cwyfan’s Church, Anglesey This tiny medieval church has been weathering storms off the island of Anglesey for hundreds of years. First built in the 12th century, the land on which St Cwyfan’s stood would have been attached to the Welsh island back then, sitting between the bays of Porth China and Porth Cwyfan. But over the centuries, the sea has eaten away at the land surrounding the church, creating the tiny islet of Cribinau and cutting it off from Anglesey at high tides. Presumably that is why it is known locally as eglwys bach y mor - the little church in the sea.
The sea continued to erode the island until, in the 1890s, a sea wall was constructed around it, which is still keeping the waves at bay. The oldest part of this Grade II listed medieval church dates back to the 12th century, although most of it was added during reconstruction work in the 14th century. You can get to this remote spot at low tide via a small causeway, as long as you have some proper walking boots. It’s a little uneven underfoot but will reward those who make the journey with spectacular views.

Today, I'd like to share with you my painting of St Cwyfan's Church on Cribinau Island near Aberffraw, Ynys Môn /Anglesey and tell you what brought me to paint it.
My watercolour was inspired by Sir Kyffin Williams's magnificent monumental square oil painting of the same subject in it's matching frame, which I was privileged to spend some time with as a teenager. My photo of it here just doesn't do it justice.
This painting stuck in my mind, and made me want to visit the church. Sir Kyffin gave it such a significance for me through his painting. And now I've painted my own interpretation of this incredible place in watercolours.
The sea weed, boulders, wobbly stones and damp sand I had to cross to get to the church are accentuated in my version, with the church beyond on it's island, and the sky around it, an ethereal idealised vision in the distance, reflecting it's original beatific purpose - to bring a piece of Heaven down to the local congregation of farmers and labourers.
The church in the sea was built during the 12th century and largely reconstructed in the 14th. It's position on an island was not planned but instead caused by the sea washing the land away around the church, St Cwyfan's originally having been built on the end of a peninsula..
Access is across the beach and rocky shore at low tide. You can find Cwyfan Church at Ty Croes near Aberffraw LL63 5YR on Ynys Môn Anglesey, but please be careful not to be cut off by the tide!
The unframed A4 original is available from me for £75 including UK postage. Please just message me to arrange purchase. And it's also available printed on all sorts of lovely things, including larger canvases, at: https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/138010105
Thanks!

Eglwys Cwyfan, Ynys Môn. One of the treasures of North Wales, the church of St Cwyfan was built on a tidal promontory in 12th century. Today, making bubbles in such a stunning setting I wondered what the people who lived here and built this stunning monunent would have made of these ephemeral spheres drifting across their bay. But the plastic. Even in such a pristine location, the shore was littered. We ran out of light today, so tomorrow we'll go back for a beach clean. Hope you all can manage to get out at least a little, and enjoy some bubbles this weekend ❤️ #giantbubbles #drzigs #multiwand #ecotoys #tenlittlepieces #leavenotrace #lovenorthwales (at St Cwyfan's Church, Llangwyfan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFnZin_lLYC/?igshid=14mou59ss4jj9

Day 5, Photograph 5; St Cwyfan's Church, Llangwyfan. Last light on the Church in the Sea. Dating from the 12th century, St Cwyfan's church is dedicated to Saint Kevin, who founded the monastery at Glendalough in County Wicklow, Ireland. The church originally stood at the end of a peninsula between two bays, Porth Cwyfan and Porth China. In later years the sea slowly eroded around the coast in the two bays, therefore the peninsula was cut off, turning Cribinau into a small tidal island. As a consequence, a causeway was built to the island to allow the local population to get to the church. -o- @visitwales @visitsnowdonia #visitwales #visitsnowdonia #snowdonianationalpark #snowdonia #northwales -o- #photography #landscapephotography #landscapephotomag #landscapephotographer -o- @olympusuk #olympusuk #olympuscameras #olympusphotography #omdem1mkii -o- @leefilters #leefilters #leefiltersystem #leebigstopper #longexposure #longexposurephotography -o- @lightroom @photoshop @nik_collection__by_dxo -o- (at Isle of Anglesey) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-qwIFdD1TW/?igshid=1sein1dpzym04

Media captionHeavy snow and freezing winds are forecast for Tuesday
Snow is falling across parts of the UK as very cold air sweeps in from Russia.
Heavy snow is expected across southern and eastern England overnight on Monday – with warnings extending into the Midlands, Scotland and Wales on Tuesday morning.
Many areas have been hit by freezing temperatures, with a wind chill making it feel like -15C in some places.
Rail firms have warned of disruption, with many planning to run a reduced service overnight and on Tuesday.
A snow emergency was declared in Kent and the council urged people not to contact it unless there is an emergency.
Heavy snow is forecast for much of Yorkshire, Teesside, Durham and Newcastle in the early hours of Tuesday morning, which is likely to cause delays on the roads, the Met Office said.
A warning is also in place for London and parts of the South East on Tuesday, with the possibility of delays and cancellations on travel networks as well as power cuts in rural areas.
Snow warnings have been issued for the whole of Wales, with temperatures expected to fall to -5C, the Met Office says.
The Met Office has both yellow warnings and more serious amber warnings – meaning there is a potential risk to life and property – for large parts of the UK for the rest of the week.

Train disruption:
All Greater Anglia trains will stop by 22:00 GMT on Monday, with a reduced service running on its routes during the day between Tuesday and Thursday
C2C services will operate normally until 21:00 GMT and passengers have been warned to expect alterations and cancellations on Monday night
Passengers using the Gatwick Express, Thameslink and Southern routes are advised to complete journeys by early evening on Monday as it is anticipated services will be delayed or cancelled after this
Tfl rail will be suspending its service from 23:00 GMT Monday and a limited service will begin at 07:00 GMT on Tuesday
Great Northern’s last train from London King’s Cross will be at 22:05 GMT on Monday and there will be a “heavily reduced timetable” on Tuesday
Southeastern have announced a reduced timetable for Tuesday, with 23 of its high-speed trains cancelled
Meanwhile, Heathrow and Gatwick airports say they are not expecting delays today, but urged anyone flying later in the week to check the status of their flight with airlines.

Weather warnings on Wednesday and Thursday’s will also cover Cornwall, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
By Wednesday night, more than 20cm (8ins) of snow could have accumulated in some parts of eastern England and Northern Ireland, forecasters have warned.
Scotland is expected to have between 5cm (2ins) 10and 10cm (4ins) of snow on Wednesday.
The Met Office is predicting that some roads may become impassable and vehicles may be stranded.
BBC Weather has warned of possibly hazardous conditions in southern England later in the week as a low pressure weather system moves up from the Bay of Biscay and hits the already “exceptionally cold air”.
‘Blizzard conditions’
Alina Jenkins, from the BBC’s Weather service, said: “Any precipitation will turn readily to snow, and with bitterly cold strong to gale force easterly winds, blizzards are likely.”
Met Office meteorologist Charlie Powell said: “Unusually for Britain, the snow is going to be quite dry, so it will blow around and gather in drifts and we could see some blizzard conditions.”
He added that while he did not want to alarm people, the Met Office was urging people to be prepared for the so-called “beast from the East”.
Parts of the UK will feel as cold as Norway and Iceland.

Wet vs dry snow
When surface temperatures are below freezing, snow is drier as it contains less water.
This type of snow is powdery and does not stick together, the Met Office says.
Wet snow however, is the result of slightly warmer, moist air, which causes the edge of snowflakes to melt and stick together.

Public Health England have advised homes to be heated to at least 18C.
Emergency shelters have been opened across the country as councils offer extra accommodation to the homeless during the freezing conditions.
The offer of a hot shower, clean clothes, food and a bed can help save lives, homeless charity St Mungo’s said.

When I’m Not Gaming Ep 2 - St Cwyfan’s Church
Second episode in what I hope is going to be a long series of short videos showing the beauty of the world we live in. This episodes subject is a little church on Anglesey called St Cwyfan’s, the church is quite unique as it is situated on an island. The sea has eroded the land so much that the peninsula became detached from the mainland, the only access now is when the tide is out. The church is a grade 2 listed building and dates back to the 12th century.
It was in danger of being lost to the sea. But in 1893, a local architect managed to realise enough money to save the church and built a sea wall around it to stop further eroding
