Drew this before patch updates liked to really really reaalllly imply Emps no likey you anymore. So. GONNA IGNORE IT FOR DRAMA'S SAKE. Let squid buddy be at least flabbergasted for Greygold. Resist a lil.

For drama's sake, let's say that's how Emps is. Still there. Somewhere. Holdin on. By a thread.
Or let's say. For Drama's Sake. The netherbrain's ego is as big as them (because did you see how they gloated about their schemes that one time? Classic Mastermind Ego). So they, too, must like their pawns with a lil flair instead of... absolutely mindless puppets because that's no fun. Even let (or spoke through) Emps gloat in the final battle like a lil shit. Netherbrain likes drama.That's why they sent Emps to fight for them. and nobody else. ಠ_ಠ

final showdown pt2.
This was one of those battles where I survived it without a single reload. So. This entire scene? Accurate. Embarrassingly Accurate. (except the healy dealy. that's Greygold flair)
Wanted to get to the crown as fast as possible, but had to fly by Emps. Literally stopped next to bud to personally yell/reassure the fool I was gonna save their ass and then risked the opportunity attack.
(which. I forgot to bring my dex 18 gloves and discovered illithidism had shit dex, so....IS FINE. GG IS ALL FOR STARTING A NEW COLLECTION OF FRIENDSHIP SCARS)
BUT SQUID BUDDY MISSED. so. I like to think Enthralled Emps had put some effort into jumping through some rather large logic hoops to miss. Unlike Greygold who put JACK effort into dodging.
I originally intended to leave Emps completely alone, risk the attacks. But. Brain tentacle surprise happened. Right next to the squid. Emps rolled high in initiative.... But not as high as Lae'zel. Game-wise, ✨I panicked✨. Story-wise? I don't think this could have been any more in-character. Albeit, I found myself quadruple checking to make sure knockout mode was ABSOLUTELY on

Y'all I was already mentally bracing for the end like 'Babe, I get it, you didn't sign up for this, no pressure, it was fun while it lasted, but if we all we have left after this sweet, sweet mindflayer/ githyanki alliance is friendship, I'd be honored' Just. don't tell me yet. Lemme enjoy our Schrodinger's Romance while it lasts.
And even though Greygold's optimistic rationalization has swiss cheese holes in it, Greygold doesn't....They're not ready to face the music just yet. Gonna drown it out by playing 'Don't Speak' by No doubt in their head instead.

In Regards to Face-Grabbing Pep Talks Becoming A Thing This Team Does Now
And Platonic dancing lessons mind you. Greygold just really cherishing their friendship right now.
What golden flecks of memory I have left of Monster-Hunter Wyll's response to Greygold's 'you must think me a monstrosity' commentary was really friggin' heartwarming.
Uplifted Greygold's spirits after Lae'zel's reaction had felt....foreboding! Maybe their love life is in shambles but, by gods, are their friendships just. So good. So good. Can and Wyll Will move mountains for. Now with telekinesis.
Knowing their friends still love them even with extra bits, Greygold won't hesitate to charge into whatever comes their way in stride.

Nobody gave Greygold the 'How to Squid' Manual. And even if they had one (it's probably integrated in their brain like a squid tutorial)-gonna adamantly ignore it. Adapt on the fly instead. In the middle of an invasion. No better way to learn babeeeeeey~

Learned that illithids feel intensely. Which would Not have helped Greygold's current mood one bit! Really, under such major life changes, I think Greygold is coping exceptionally well. Too well even...
I can only conclude it's because they've figured out how to compartmentalize their feelings squid-style. Nothing like throwing all those messy negative vibes into a mental bag of holding in the back of their mind to sort out later. Or never! Is fine. Everything is fine.
Probably only vibe sensitive folk could hear their constant internal cussing. (was me. I was their constantly cussing vibe)

So. Orpheus is Greygold's best friend forever no take-backsies.
That prince can never undo the bond that he has wrought upon himself that day because Orph ol' buddy ol' pal has proven that-
✨Anything is possible✨
Not just githyanki and Mindflayer working together, but Orpheus and Emps, the two that fate has tried stubbornly to prevent, co-operated.
Like Minsc said at some point, everyone is capable of great good and great evil.... and proving Emps and Orph wrong that they CAN work together, suck it you two.
in that moment, no regrets saving the prince. Greygold is indeed gonna hold this over Orph and Emps head until the end of days.
(Can't believe combat mode gave me such a hollywood moment of having the only one who could save emps be orpheus with his last ki points, haaaa, IT WAS WILD GUYS- Sometimes if the story can't supply you with the ultimate pina colada alliance, combat mode's got your back \o/)

Not really a con game-mechanic-wise. More like a morbid curiosity. Fuzzy memory recalls windmill-flayer being hungry when they were born, so Greygold must be the same.
But being completely new to this aaaahahh- Greygold spent the first entire battle trying to eat just one brain while everyone else was kicking ass. Didn't even succeed. Last foe to die too. Not their proudest moment, but thankfully they were on the roof so nobody saw how bad they flopped.

Final Showdown pt 2.
So the key to becoming a lil more chill with the patch 0 Orpheus ending is realizing what I can get away with off camera. Brain fell down and nobody saw how we landed? No Emps in sight? Who knows long it took to regroup? One reasonable patch 0 ending where everyone lives coming up.
and I would've been content with this ending too if it weren't for those meddling patches.
Felt validated about the artifact solution though when the epilogue came out. As if Greygold wouldn't keep that lil doo-hickey after all this, practically a bag of holding for people.
Had to jump some logic hoops for Orph though. Don't think Greygold would be willing to risk any potential confrontation with Orpheus about Emps after this. Try and pull their first Squid Trick on him. But uh. Turns out! Orph Buddy's got mad wisdom. Dude has probably seen every Squid Trick in the book. Although. Not so silly as Greygold's attempts.

I call this the confrontation bloopers.
Squid Buddy. I know you know that gloating to your enemies about knowing their weaknesses is. Ineffective! That is purely villain vibrative verbatim and you are better than that.
I can only conclude the Netherbrain's ego for the dramatic flair is playing a part in Emp's behavior or The Emperor is passive aggressively reminding the party that the Netherbrain has access to their memory drive where they were storing the players' character sheets.
