My Year of the Book - Day 128: It’s Tuesday, which is George R. Stewart Day in this little corner of Instagram. Here’s an obscure biography written by a mid-20th Century author about a mid-19th Century satirist who hid behind a pen name. What’s not to like? The man who signed his work “John Phoenix, esq., The Veritable Squibob,” had good reason to keep his identity as a writer of humorous and biting newspaper columns a secret; George Derby was a Captain in the U.S. Army, an organization not known for its sense of humor. Now nearly forgotten (topical satire doesn’t age well), Derby’s work was well-known in his day. He was read by President Grant and novelist Owen Wister among many others, and he not only preceded Samuel Clemons, but according to GRS, inspired him to write in a wry, satirical style AND to do it under the pen name of “Mark Twain.” If for nothing else, he should be honored for that fact alone. GRS wrote the book in 1937 following the success of “Ordeal By Hunger,” but before he became a novelist as well.
