When pollination of your squash isn’t happening naturally in your garden, it’s up to you to transfer pollen by hand.

All you need to do is transfer some pollen from the male flower's anther onto the female flower's stigma.

The most common mistake we see in instagram gardens is overcrowding of plants. Can some plants do just fine this way? Absolutely and yet squash won’t . Planting squash too closely is a recipe for disaster. Powdery mildew, blossom end rot, squash bug and vine borer paradise, soil depletion….the list goes on. Rotation: Take a note from our ancestors, history, and our own gardens plant in patches not rows. This makes rotation easier and proper rotation aids in replenishing of the soil. You know we always speak on interplanting herbs as a pest control, squash can especially benefit from the ones mentioned here. Powdery mildew is your nemesis if you’ve planted too close together especially 😵‍💫 but you can face it head on with a tbsp of baking soda, tbsp of Castile soap, and gallon of water. Mix these together and spray on your squash to kick powdery mildews butt across the season. Squash are heavy feeders- they benefit from following nitrogen fixing legumes along with the leafy greens. Squash blossoms (these are luffa aegyptiaca, I think) and hyacinth beans (lablab purpureus), both great choices for an apocalypse garden: easy to grow, vigorous once established, at least some part of the plant is edible if harvested and prepared correctly, gorgeous flowers, and beloved by pollinators. Neither are native but they both do well here on the Gulf Coast. Spiritually, squash blossoms are associated with fertility while lablab beans are associated with *avoiding* pregnancy. I haven't done much research on this yet, but let me know if you know of any i should look at! Little squash blossoms peeking through. This is the first garden painting I did with the delinquent bee failing to spread his pollen. My garden wasn’t real successful this year. But we’re eating it - bug holes and all. Hopefully I get around to painting more of my garden. But today I went back to my painting of the seed head in a patch of yard. He didn’t survive the week I was on vacation. But a couple of daisies have appeared behind where he was. I may put them in.
